    just for anyone who needs to know this... skating speed is mostly due to skater skill and conditioning level. I've seen people maintaining 30+km/h on 4x80, while people with 3x125 are struggling to maintain 18km/h. Unless you are actually competing, save your money and just skate more.

      This applies to bicycles too!
      I used to love passing up groups of dudes on $5,000 carbon fiber UFO looking bikes, with my $1200 Specialized Alez.
      I now have a Cannondale Slice, but I'd absolutely testify that the only difference is the posture and chainrings.

    For me it would be interesting to compare Speedskates ( 4x110 wheels ), with a fitness long distance skate like E2 Pro 125 ( 3x125 wheels). When you turn 50+ the comfort of a fitness skate is appealing, but I would like to be able to keep up the pace at a marathon race.

    It would have been interresting to have put the same wheels on both skates to really compare the skates. I think the difference wouldn't have been that much as according to my experience the wheels are the greatest factor in speed.
    The fact that the boot is lighter on a speed skates is key, but if you lack ankle strenght recreationnal skates will become faster

    • @ferryvantichelen6521

    I have the Macroblade 80 and it is so unstable compared to my hardshell boots. They definitely are more comfortable but it is not worth it having more comfort when sitting down. You want the comfort and reliability during turns, cross-overs, every stroke and movement you do. Freeskates are the best for me if you have a good combination of boot, liner, wheels and bearings.

  • @echo1983
    @echo1983 Рік тому +2

    I was taking in the cost of all these skates and I figured out something. I just have my fitness skates that came with 80mm decided instead of buying so many skates, I just ended up buying different frames for all the skates styles i wanted to practice. Now I have track speed skates, long distance marathon skates, roller hockey skates, and added a blade adaptor for ice skates all using my same boot. As far as the cross over? I just loosen the ankle. Or not even tie it up. I got it all with out buying so much

    Cool comparison. I was surprised it was only 30s quicker, tbh. I know this is only over a 4km distance but I’d have thought the larger wheels, better bearings, and longer frame of the speed skate alone would’ve made more of a difference. I’m quite impressed at the performance of the Macroblade here.
    Track skating is obviously very different to urban/city skating, where even road cracks can be obstacles. I’d be very interested to see a similar comparison over a 4km urban route with multiple surfaces; I wonder how the speed skate would compare....? 🤔

    This video is crazy to me. I have those same Macroblade 110s and with stock bearings and wheels I am averaging 11mph = 18kmh on a 10 mile round trip skate. I’m getting 125mm skates within the year so I’ll have to do this test myself. I was expecting a much bigger difference.

  • @pasmoi4233
    @pasmoi4233 2 роки тому +5

    The real huge difference here are the wheels. They make 90% of the difference.
    It's not the size: it's what they are made of. You'd still go faster with dual density 90mm speed wheel, than with these 100mm fitness wheels.
    Actually, i tested: i often use 5x90 dual density speed wheels, (because it's a confortable setup for very long time skating), and i can still compete with people (friends, speed medalists) on 4x110 or 3x125 speed tailored skates.
    Your video/experience is scientifically very well made. (Based on heart rate: lots of tests/compazisons are biased because the effort changes).
    Thanks you for doing it: this kind of raw data are precious!

    My Strava record against the largest field (over 800 people) - 4k at 37km/h - was on a pair of trashed ancient Powerslide Phuzion 90mm skates that I bought second hand for 35 euro from a girl with feet 5 sizes smaller than mine. She couldn't believe they fitted me perfectly, lol. A few years later I bought speed skates. But my top speed hasn't improved much since. It is still around 42km/h, and I can sustain 35km/h for about an hour. Unfortunately my fitness went out the window during the pandemic. I wonder if I will ever be able to finish the local marathon without being taken out of the race (virtually the entire field finished within an hour). Perhaps if I would join a club and get some guidance. But I still prefer the thrill of vert skating :)

  • @storispinner
    @storispinner 2 роки тому +5

    Interesting test! Would be curious what level of skater you have to be to start noticing this advantage. Would an intermediate fitness skater, for example, get the same advantage in switching to the faster speed skate? Or would their technique/speed not be good enough to take advantage of it?

    • @AConnorDN38416
      @AConnorDN38416 2 роки тому +6

      When initially transitioning from rec to speed skates you will probably go slower just because speed skates will feel so alien. But as you practice with speed skates you will adapt to them and eventually you should notice that you can skate more effectively in the speed skates. Of course the more skill you have, the bigger the difference, since the main advantage of speed skates is that they give you the highest level of control over your skates.

If your skates fit well enough to be able to skate without socks it is an amazing feeling, as though the skates were part of your foot

    How are you going to do a proper speed comparison when using 125mm wheels on one skate and 110mm wheels on the other? lol come on, of course the 125 wheel setup is going to be way faster... I don't even need to watch the video. lol.

      This is a comparison of a fitness setup with 110mm wheels and a Speed setup with 125mm wheels. Not a comparison between a tall and a low cut boot 😊

      @@thorupviktor I didn't mention anything about the cut of the boot. You're comparing speed. Larger wheels are going to be faster than smaller wheels, that's just physics. I like your content. Just pointing out that if you're trying to see how "fitness" skates, stack up against "speed" skates in terms of how fast they go, you would need to use the same sized wheels.

    Rollerblade "these overpriced macroblades aren't selling... Let's call up Viktor to make a video how flimsy macroblades are as good as $1000 pro skates..... That should boost sales..."

    Those shitty macroblades cost $300 these days for crap. Waste of hydrogen wheels imo
