Super excited for the ammo fix. Love that “well he’s still a dwarf and will often prefer to use the crossbow as a club” LOL.
Nice to see the issue of marksdwarves getting some work done on it.
The problem with ammo was really damn annoying, glad that's fixed. Though there are still, as you said, issues with the AI, dwarves sure do love ditching the idea of going couple tiles over to the stockpile of bolts and instead jump down a wall and charge at an army of goblins and die pathetically.
I wonder if this can avoided by careful zone assignment?

Marksdwarves are awesome glad that they are working again.
Oh man, that'll be huge if they actually get that Ammo fixed. Now, if only they could get that 'i'mma hit them with my crossbow,' thing fixed...
Might have just been me, but I got a massive fps boost in this patch for my bigger forts. 10 extra fps for a fortress that typically ticks around 25 frames at its lowest.
I wonder if it's due to the relationship-checking optimizations.
i spent almost 2 hours yesterday trying to figure out why my bowman were dropping their "arrows" soon after picking it up... sneaky arrow =/= bolt...
Would love to see your take on what makes an effective crossbow squad. I'm under the impression that it doesn't hurt to equip them in steel armor too, but they're a LOT slower.
Give them silver crossbows for maximum melee damage
If they're at least level 5 in crossbows with metal bolts and have 0 ways to path to the enemies but have sight through fortifications, they're really good
leather/bone armor, a metal chainmail if you're feeling generous
important thing is to add a shield (wood ones work perfectly)
you want your marksdwarves to station quickly, so dont encumber them with heavy armor
I will definitely play this version! I was disappointed that some core features disappeared when the game was released on Steam. Glad they're working on the important issues.

I've had problems with items being stuck in wheelbarrow that might be the out of bound issue that was fixed

Ooh, I missed that part about the assigned zone deletion crash before; that's awesome! that's one of those ones I have written down on a lil post-it on my bulletin board bc it comes up JUST frequently enough that i've gotten got by it bc I forget, lol
My archers have performed well even before any update. Most of the time, they shoot behind fortifications safely, or I have my archers stationed off a hill in the backline. Never had a prob.
There was a issue where you could not make a gear set from scratch or they would not equip ammo. I think there was a work around were you copy or edit the default one, but for me if i deleted that set i could bot use any bolts no matter what
I just started playing dwarf fortress a week ago and was trying to figure out why they wouldn't equip bolts. I did not realize it was a glitch, it was driving me insane.

May I kindly ask to add an ability to edit labors presets? it is important to manage them on players own style. Set the picture for custom labors would be freaking amazing!!
Holy shit I can't believe ammo works I can't believe how EXCITED I am that ammo works this makes me immediately want to try again with building an archery tower. I actually noticed the new alerts screens when I played last night and not gonna lie, I thought they were a DFHack inclusion. I like them a lot, they're slick. Thanks for the summation video!
Oh man, finally. This new screen for the alerts is exactly what I've been wanting/hoping for. Suppose I better get back into DF again now! Or at least soon. Thank you very much Blind for the making these videos so I could find out about this.

I was not expecting a comprehensive set of tabs with the return of the announcements screen.
Toady is totally spoiling us with QoL features like this - can't wait to see how the adventure mode menus end up looking.

I think the worst QOL thing for me right now is the inconsistent UI/UX. Buttons that open menus with only a single item but don't auto-select that option, while other buttons just toggle immediately and yet others open menus and auto-select the first item in the menu. Esc key acting as a back button for some sub-screens but closing other sub-screens. Right click acting differently depending on what you have selected... the UX is just awful and inconsistent.
Yep, DF badly needs someone with ounce of actual UI design experience.
What about loading times when you're choosing what to place on pedestal? It takes quite a lot of time compared to how fast stocks screen is loading in.

Funny... I only use marksdwarves for hunting, and they seem to work fine in that job, without this update. Glad I haven't tried to make them fight organized enemies.
Did they expose the UI for setting which kinds of ammo to use for training vs combat? I did figure out how to fix the problem and also designate training ammo vs. normal (so adamantine arrows don't get used for target practice) in DFHack but the fix was so complex that I decided to wait and see what they did in this next patch.
nope, but if you let ammo drop a floor then its reusable.

lol the update cannot come quickly enough! I would be on beta branch if dfhack was updated for it, which I think is still not (?)
Yesterday I finally created a marksdwarf squad and at first it was ok, trained them on crundels, batmen (for some reason they have metal weapons even steel, probably some mod) and trogs. then when the dusty FB came I sent them to the caves with my cannon fodder merc squad and half of them just rushed to bash the beast in melee. I look into their inventory and half of them has arrows instead of bolts. I literally have only steel crossbows in the uniform, no bows or whatever so idk how this even happened. There needs to be some kind of "skirmish" mode like in Total War games that makes ranged units automatically run from melee combat.

@@wyze7545for some strange reason militia used to throw away their food from backpacks in random places, since it was owned it was never picked up and stayed until it rot

@@BlindiRL Honestly don't remember what exactly the bug was I had but it was either an issue with designated stairs or an issue with them not building stairs despite having a route to them and materials. Regardless it would be nice to have up stairs, down stairs, and up/down stairs back.
@@lancearmada do you use burrows? I know it may sound stupid, but once i forgor to add the burrow where i wanted stairs and I was mad why my stupid dwarfs refused to build the stairs
Announcement window is not working for me. Also even if it did, the UX looks like we're being trolled. The more "updates" DF gets the less I want to play it.
Well, I'd report the issues with the announcements screen youtube comments won't get things fixed.
