- Major (Retired) David A. Wesely is credited with INVENTING roleplaying games in the late 60's with his Braunstein game, as well as the concept of a Referee or Gamemaster in tabletop wargames, which later became the "Dungeonmaster." He was a very close personal friend of the late co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons; Dave Arneson. He's been gaming for over half a century and still hosts games every Wednesday night in his home.
Thankyou for posting this.
What a great interview. Thank you for sharing!
Glad I found this one, Nathan & David. Cheers!
Wesely seems like a cool dude. I love hearing stories about how games were ACTUALLY played in the past.
Great interview! Thanks for uploading this piece of living history!
This is a fantastic interview, and a great format for it. I am really enjoying 'being a part of the conversation' rather than flipping between talking heads. Nicely done, and thank you for arranging this.
My pleasure and thanks for the kind feedback!
great interview; thanks. Give us a heads up on the next one so we can formulate some better questions. Thanks.
Thanks, and thanks for the questions you did submit! I thought they were good :)
Thank you for this interview. Braunstein is still available on drive thru rpg.
That game is not the same thing Wesley did.
You claim in the video description that Wesley invented the concept of using a referee in wargames. Wesley himself mentions the Prussian wargame Kriegspiel in your interview. Kriegspiel required a referee and was published about 120 years before Wesley started wargaming. Wesley himself also mentions that Totten's 1880s wargame used a referee.
I thought it was David Wesley Long?
