  • This is an honest Northrock CTM 700 Costco Bike Review.
    Normally i am a big fan of northrock bikes from Costco but the Northrock CTM 700 C missed the mark.
    The Northrock CTM hybrid CTM - 700 X 40C Wheel is a weak bike offering because all they did was take road bike tires and stick them on a mountain bike frame with the exact same gears so this bike is not at all good for road biking.

    Literally took this very bike riding Eurovelo 15 and 6 Amsterdam to Vienna and then Prague. Bads: handlebar is too narrow (upgraded mine to Moloko bars) and the rear wheel sport freewheel instead of cassette so you dont have a lot of upgradability, literally throw away the included saddle and plastic pedals. Okays: suspension helps with road imperfections. Goods: mech disc brakes, heavy sturdy frame for hauling biketouring paraphernalias, shimano crankarms and shifter (only had to tune it around 3/4 during my trip), price, tires lasted me the whole trip with 25% thread left and only got 1 puncture on rear. Maybe im just lucky with the costco employee that built mine but I love my Touring NorthRock CTM.

    Hello, thank you for the review and suggestions. In way of introduction, I’m Mike from Northrock Bikes, product development. Unlike your other Northrock positive reviews, the CTM brings into question ways for us to improve. When creating the CTM we wanted to create a sturdy bike to handle gravel paths and traverse to paved surfaces. For the drivetrain, we are using a Shimano higher-line Altus, and selected a Shimano triple crank with extra teeth (48/38/28) to provide additional options for hills or faster on the flats. The SR NEX suspension is a higher suspension quality, designed to address a smoother ride, but not for off-road riding. We considered not including a front suspension, this would reduce the weight of the bicycle, but we thought riders would prefer the extra comfort. With a rigid fork or no suspension, this will reduce bobbing and allow for a more efficient ride on paved surfaces. What do you think, change to a rigid fork? As for the frame, we are looking into modifying it to reduce weight. In all, our goal is to provide as many features as possible at strong value and give riders a great experience. Thank you for the thoughtful feedback. Mike, Northrock Bikes.

      Hi Mike, thanks for your comment, quite unexpected (in a good way). Love your other bikes, have well over 5000 great kms on the XCF alone.
      You're bang on with your idea to change to a rigid fork and frame modifications to reduce weight. If you changed the CTM frame up to be more like the SR1 frame and less like the XCR's I think you'd have another amazing bike in your lineup.
      I see many Northrock bikes around the city, all on paved paths even the XCF, year round. I mention this only because if people really wanted to take a lighter version of the CTM on bumpy gravel with no suspension they would hopefully have the good sense to lower their tire pressures like you would on the XCF to cushion the ride a bit.
      I considered putting gravel tires on my SR1 to replace my GIANT TCX at one point because I enjoyed the SR1 so much and it was 1/6th the cost.
      Anyways, thanks again for your comment! Sorry about the shitty review but I look forward to seeing new and better Northrock bikes in the future. I'm sure they will continue to improve. The newest version of the XCF is really sweet compared to the original i got back in 2020 (and that one was already awesome).

      No reply from northrock. What a weird comment

      Ditch the narrow bars and long stem for a short stem wider bars for comfort. Keep the suspension.

      Nice to see a response from Northrock; it's rare for a manufacturer to respond. I agree completely with the OP and I'm going to return mine this week. I just assembled an XTW and found out for myself how poor the Altus shifters are. So yes, I would opt for no suspension to reduce weight and better shifters, perhaps a double crank. A personal lesson for me is that it makes more sense to spend a couple hundred dollars more and buy from a bike shop where they will ensure it performs to its optimum level before leaving the store.

  • @JohnLeBlancCan

    I agree completely; great review! I just built an XTW with, as far as I can tell, the same Altus shifters. The chain skips from one sprocket to another! I returned it and I'm going to return the CTM 700 as well unassembled. I don't want to spend the time to just find out that I have a bad experience with the shifters. I agree about the weight and personally, I would drop the front shocks; not necessary for tarmac and even groomed gravel.

      @@JohnLeBlancCan thank you sir, your comment is appreciated.
      It’s too bad, northrock used to use better shifters and the bikes were pretty good. Now that they’re going for mass production max profits seems like quality has slipped a bit. Like you said though, it was nice to see them comment on the video and acknowledge it at least.
      Thank you for sharing your experience with these and hope you find some better bikes.

      @@TheLastHonestInfluencer You are most welcome. Your frank, honest, and concise style is a model for other UA-cam reviewers. I also like that you don't feel compelled to play any background music, which I find annoying and distracts from the message. A strong message doesn't need music.

      @JohnLeBlancCan this is very rewarding to hear. Watching other ‘reviews’ with ads, sponsorships, music, life story’s, back story’s, inspirational messages etc is what inspired me to make this ‘plain’ style of review.

      Great price but they are selling fast, I see they only have small left now. Hope you can find a good one for a decent price thank you for your comment!

    Hi, if I take One use for 280$ and I swich tire . Its gonna be I good bike like the cx 29 ? CAN I upgrade suspension? Thank you for your time sir

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer
      @TheLastHonestInfluencer  Місяць тому

      Great question, I wish I had the answer for you, I was tempted to do the same thing (swap the tires) but it looks like it would be hard to get the wider tires to fit, it’s probably doable but beyond my knowledge how. You would be able to upgrade the front fork pretty easy tho.
      Honestly I’d try to get a used xc27 or xc29 tho, for an extra $200 it’s just so much better and less hassle. Hope you find something!!

      Great question! I’m still looking for a good one. Someone just commented they found the northrock XC29 at a Costco in Calgary for $480…I’d go with that for sure. Mine was $600 two years ago and it still rides great (albeit slower than a rig with tires like this, was trying to find a faster gravel/pavement type bike more comfortable than the Sr1 road bike).

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer
      @TheLastHonestInfluencer  4 місяці тому +3

      I know there are great bikes out there for $500 or less and I am determined to find them. Thanks for your question.
      I expected, was hoping to find a bike that delivered surprisingly good value for less, like the Gros Louis 3. Instead I got this thing, this bike is basically garbage a complete waste of $450.
      The entire premise of this channel is to find affordable merchandise that offers great value. Diamond in the rough purchases. Which is harder to do than you might expect thanks to all the FAKE POSITIVE REVIEWS on UA-cam. People say a crappy thing is great just to collect .05% commission on every sale. It's insane.

    only issue is the price. But the features look decent. Avoid the anti-ebike elitism…anything that gets people out and enjoying cycling is good.

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer
      @TheLastHonestInfluencer  4 місяці тому +3

      Absolutely disagree. E-bikes need their own paths. E biking is not cycling, and it sucks for cyclist who aren’t riding 30kph to get passed by someone riding an 80lb e-bikes dinging their bells like crazy for you to get out of the way because they’re riding an electric motor cycle at top speed. When the path is full of NON e-bikes it’s super sketchy because those riders are usually inexperienced and have zero ethics or etiquette. Again, those people aren’t cyclists or cycling, they are riding electric motorcycles on the bike path it’s not exercise. If they want to do that, ride on the road!
      So how is that elitist?

    • @jpsion

      @@TheLastHonestInfluencer Lol, you seem to buy into that us/them tribalism mentality…yet you want to be treated with respect as a cyclist. Cyclists belong on the road, not on separated paths if you extend your logic, far more dangerous to have cyclists near pedestrian traffic.

      lol. Its exactly the same as if I buy a hydraulic powered robotic suit and go into the gym and start doing 500lb pull downs on a lat pull down machine getting 1/6th the workout but pretending like I’m actually accomplishing something while simultaneously robbing someone who actually wants to train of their experience.
