Every VALYRIAN STEEL SWORD Explained in 7 minutes

- Valyrian steel swords are ultra-light and ultra-sharp weapons forged using ancient blood-magic techniques from Valyria. The forging technique was lost in the Doom of Valyria, so these swords are extremely rare. Most Valyrian steel blades in Westeros are treasured heirlooms of noble houses, each with its own name, characters, and history. Here’s every one of them, with the most significant one at the end.

That line about Joffery came out of left field and almost made me spit some coffee. Subbed.
You! What a smart c**^^.
Ice is 400 years old, not from the age of Heroes
Yeah house stark had a sword named ice in AH the new ice was just named the same to honor it.
Forgive me, my Lord. For you are correct and will always be.
but we won't be able to see it again because of tywin being biggest asshole and arrogant piece of shit in the series
Each heirloom sword held by the Starks were always called Ice. Cause idk Northern traditions I guess.

I thought Dawn was forged from a meteor
Came here to comment this.
It is, the guys in the video is wrong
A meteor can be described as a fallen star
He mentioned that in the video
The video does say....................... "clearly Dawn was not made of Valyrian steel, but was instead forged from the metal of a fallen star" I thought that was very clearly pointed out in the video? Or are people not able to comprehend these days?
There’s a few other unnamed/minor ones:
-Truth which belonged to the Rogare family from Lys. There’s a chance we could see it in HotD depending on how far they go.
-An axe which we haven’t heard to name of yet belonging to Adrian Celtigar.
-An Arakh belonging to Caggo, one of the Windblown.
-Unnamed blade belonging to Sandoq the Shadow, another one we may see in HotD
Also not a sword, but kinda notable, Euron allegedly has Valyrian Steel armor, which depending on how you look at things might actually be better than a weapon lol.
Agh yes, the Dothraki man I would always kidnap for his valyrian steel, I know him very well.
I doubt we'll be seeing anything after the hour of the wolf
@@connorbosley4431 yeah probably, will be interesting at what point they decide to wrap it up at.
Would feel kinda strange tho if they end it without you know who’s (trying to avoid spoilers) return with the Rogare’s
Wasn't needle also valyrian steel
@@lukas6610 nope just a regular sword Jon had made in Winterfell styled after Braavosi blades.
When talking about blackfyre, the 2nd picture is the wrong daemon. Thats daemon targaryen, the rouge prince with his goldcloaks wielding dark sister, not daemon waters.
Rogue is not Rouge.
Lady Forlon is one of the most important swords. They fought in the most notables duels and battles of Westeros history
The celtigars have a valyrian steel axe named crabs pincer
After becoming the 3 eyed raven if it had been me one of the first things I would have done was attempt to travel back to Valyria or anywhere else they may have been forged through research of where the most likely place was and learned the secret of the forging of it
Couple things widow's wail was given to jaime after joffery death and at the end of season 2 aemond is the one in possession of the catspaw
about the Corbrays:
-Lady Rhaena Targaryen first husband was sir Corwin Corbray, they married after the Dance of Dragons
-during the first Blackfyre rebellion, in the battle of the Redgrass field, two valiryan swords clashed as Daemon blackfyre and sir Gwayne Corbray of the Kingsguard fought for nearly an Hour until Daemon managed to wound sir Gwayne. out of respect for his opponent, Daemon ordered his men to treaty the sir Gwayne and Bloodraven took the oportunity for his men to find a good spot and them shoot arrows in which killed Daemon blacfyre.
-during Robert's rebellion, Lyn Corbray, using Lady Forlon, slew Prince Lewyn Martel of the Kingsguard during the battle of the Trident
there’s so much miss information in this video. omg.
Like what?
It's nice that you make a video about this but using canon from tv series to explain some is like using last airbender movie (which doesn't exist) to explain avatar universe. I don't like remembering those horrible seasons.
You are correct, my Lord. Using B-rolls from the TV also put us in a risk of copyright claim, even though it's fair use only ^^.
You can keep them all. Give me Dawn, The Sword of the Morning.
Nightfall had little history but it's still quite special.
It was looted by Dalton "The Red Kraken" Greyjoy from a corsair he slew. But instead of becoming the ancestral family sword of House Greyjoy, it ended up in the hands of Ser Harras Harlaw, a Ironborn who somehow became a knight
well to somehow become a knight you need to worship the seven and get a knight to knight you ... easy for a good fighter, just say the words and get a knight to knight you... but thats not my point, most of the northern lancers are not knights, but they are the same thing without the pious name.... also ... fun fact, the Greyjoys are not knights either, they do have their elite fighters but they are not recognized as "knights"
@@martinmullender-taeter5163 some northerners do get knighted, usually in battle. Jorah Mormont and Rodrik Cassel likely got their knighthood fighting for Robert or the Targaryens. It's very rare. Ser Harras Harlow probably grabbed the title
@@SantomPh if you reread my comment then you would see i said "most", some people in the north do worship the Seven ... that is true, and therefore they would be knights, but it is a tiny insignificant portion, the only place where knights are common in the north is White Harbor and the Manderlys are from the south ... also im pretty sure many of the northern lancers and lords are indeed considered knights in the south and addressed as such, they are all elite heavy horse after all
There is very interesting and in my opinion believable fan theory that Dawn is the original Ice from the age of heroes and also is the sword used to defeat the white walkers for the first time. Makes both of them even more interesting. Also, Dawn is (likely) not valyrian steel but WAY older, like thousands of years older, than Valyria and said to be made of fallen star (meteorite), which it would likely have to be to be around way back in the day...
House Baratheon doesn't have one but if they did, "Storm" would be a good name for it. Maybe an idea for a fanfic
It’s a good one, but a little too cliche for my liking. It’s just like the Targaryen naming their sword as “dragon” or “fire”. A better one would be something like “Thunder”^^
Jeor Mormont didn't take the sword with him when he took the black, his sister sent it to him after Jorah was exiled by Ned Stark. Jeor didn't use it, only giving it to Jon and changing the pommel
The Drumms took Red Rain from the Reyne family in the Westerlands, not the Reach.
jamie named it oath keeper,
It was Brienne. Jamie gifted her the sword when he asked to make sure the Stark girls found their way home and told her to name it.
@@Viper631 Jaime actually asked her to name it "Oathkeeper". So it was Jaime who decided the name technically.
@@simonbionary11010I remember Jaime asking her what will you name it and Brianne said oathkeeper, and Jaime was happy but it hit a nerve because the name “oathkeeper” 100% was all Brianne not Jaime
@@TheYoungWolf0 That is in the show.
In the book "A storm of swords" Jaime is the one who suggests the name.
@@simonbionary11010 okay makes sense thank you! Apologies for my outburst my lord
Blackfyre, Red Rain, and Knightfall. 👍👍👍
You cant melt steal to liquid and cast swords. Specially on opened half molds.
Saying that widow's wail was never used in combat, but what became of it? I don't think this has been explained either in the books or the tv-series
From the series, when Tommen enacted his literal interpretation of King's landing, the entire city was in chaos with Cersei quickly taking control. It's likely the sword was completely forgotten until likely buried in rubble from the city being burned down. We can only hope some very opportunistic Kingsguard or chamber maid stole it away when they saw everything falling apart.
@adamluther5836 Wait but Jaime took Widow's Wail with him north and it was confiscated by the Unsullied if anything its likely with them still or taken by the surviving Dothraki back to Essos as a grand prize.
For some reason I thought that all Valyrian steel swords of Westeros houses were gifts from Aegon the Conqueror. Completely neglecting that some of those houses didn't bend the knee
The Houses got their swords before the Doom of Valyria, it's very likely that their ancestors comisioned them or that they got them as gifts from Valyrian nobles.
At least a couple of these blades have a damascus pattern (wood grain look) that indicates there was more than one type of steel used in the forging. So Widow's Wail and Heartsbane are not pure Valyrian or there would be no damascus pattern. I think the pattern is evident in a couple of other swords but I can't see clearly enough - it sure looks like there's a pattern in Catspaw as well. The damascus pattern is achieved by forging two or more different steels (steels with different carbon content) together and then folding them repeatedly until the folded layers produce a wood grain appearance. This is probably just a production choice because it makes the swords look distinct and awesome. Something that bothers me as a blacksmith though is how "forged" swords are often depicted being "cast" and poured into a mold. This is not how a sword is forged. Nobody fights with a cast iron sword. If you wanted to forge 2 new swords from 1 old one you would simple cut the old sword into 2 pieces and then heat until bright red and hammer those pieces out to make the shape of 2 new swords - no melting required. When the 2 new sword shapes have been hammered out the shape is refined by grinding and filing, then it's heat treated and tempered, then polished, then sharpened. But again, pouring liquid metal into a mold is a production choice because it looks really cool on camera
The damascus pattern is not a production choice, it is was how valyrian blades are described in the book of I remember correctly. All valyrian blades are mostly dark with damascus look (it is not said like that but that's how i remember it)
Wasn’t Needle Valyrian steel.
You forgot that Dalton Greyjoy had a Valyrian sword as well, Nightfall
I wished you made clear which information is show only
Catspaw is Azor Ahai confirmed
I know this is more about swords, but why is Ormund Hightower portrayed by Eric Bana here? Am I missing something?
I was thinking the same thing lol
he’s just using any picture that could be most accurate since we don’t have any real life acted out characters.. yet. season 3 will 99% have ormund. as well as daeron getting some dubs for team green
My Lord, I hope that Eric Bana will take upon this great honor ... so that I won't look bad.
a-song-of-seven-kingdoms.fandom.com/wiki/Ormund_Hightower
Such a nerdy "ummm actually" correction but...
at 4:00, while describing Daemon Blackfyre, you show a picture of Daemon Targaryen, the Rogue Prince and brother of the one and only Vizzy the First. He's wearing the Red Dragon on Black sigil of house Targaryen, not the Black Dragon on Red of house Blackfyre, plus he's at the front of a group of gold cloaks, of whom Daemon Targ was the leader. Daemon Blackfyre WAS named after Daemon Targ, however
Sorry to nit pick. But there was a valyrian steel arakh used by one of the brave companions if memort served. Also house Bolton had a knife they used to flay people
MArtin loves to use literary devices and a "cat's paw" is someone used by another as tool to carry out an unpleasant task, ex the assassin Joffrey sent to kill Bran. Gotta wonder who will end up with it and what unpleasant task they will be sent to do.
Ikr, I hate that people use the term as if it was a specific type of dagger or that dagger's name.
in the last arya had the catspaw dagger or she gave it to bran ?
You actually forgot about two valriyan steel Lightbringer the ancestral sword of house stark and Valriyan steel Axe of house greyjoy
House Greyjoy does not own any Valyrian steel weaponry, the axe is from house Celtigar and Lightbringer is from a time way before Valyria existed so it certainly was not made of Valyrian steel.
@@armandogutierrez473 what are you saying Nightfall the valriyan steel sword of Delton greyjoy remember house greyjoy does possess valriyan weapons and lightbringer was the only steel sword during age of heroes which is capable of fighting whyte walkers
AH yes Ice, a ancestor's sword held by the starks for generations. Now has taken up a important part of history by being called Widow's Wail wielded by obviously the most mighty warrior of them all King Joffrey 😂
Ah yes the prince that was promised aka Arya stark and not Jon snow
I feel as though Ned couid not have beaten Sir Arthur Dayne, and it was more likely to be his friend from the tourney, Howland Reed. His style of fighting did not seem honourable to a knight and probably the only way a great knight could've been defeated by unconventional means.
i mean i woudnt take got finale as cannon, prince who was promised will be john snow no?
There is disputant, a dark valyrian blade from house Whent
Correct title should be some because that is certainly not all of them.
If Dawn isn't Valyrian Steel then why even list it?
yeah, you’re also missing a few like where’s the Truth the sword
Ice 🗿
Prophecy: The prince that was promised will save us all
Reality: A girl has arrived.
Dawn isn’t a valyrian steel sword it is made from a meteorite hence why the daynes of starfall have a falling meteor on their sigil
Wait what did you say at 2:39 hahaha
Please don't have my tongue for that
wow only 9 comments and 6k views way too early

2:39 lmao
Where is widows cry
A what?
You mean widow's wail?
2:38 🤣
Forgive me, my Lord. I lost my temper there ^^
2:36 😂😂
lets be honest, if Sam took Heartsbane ... he would not have reached the wall, he would be hunted down by his father, and if not him then by his retainers and friends ... you cant just "take" a valyrian sword and all will be fine, its like taking the crown of england and thinking you can just walk out, these things are guarded day and night and everyone knows what they look like ... also if i was lord commander and my friend just dragged in a Valyrian sword, i would tell him he is crazy and go into full damage control mode, because the last thing we need is the Tarlys marching up to the wall to reclaim it, and you bet they would march, everyone ever that was called Tarley and their men
also .. if you are gonna make a video about ASOIAF then you should actually know what you are talking about ... where to start ... i mean the comments are just flooded with people pointing out wrong points, and these are not hardcore fans that read all the books 20 times, just people that are interested for the most part and can use the damn wiki .... the name of "ice" is ancient tradition/legacy for the starks to name the great blade of the king in the north, not the sword we see in ASOIAF, the sword is much younger than the name... for a start
Well actually ice is not to the ancestral sword of house stark. Ice is 400 years old and it comes in the position of house stark during the reign of King Jhareys 1st targaryen the real ancestral sword of house stark is Lightbringer wielded by Bran the Builder the first king in the north. Lightbringer was the sword from the age of heroes not ice and yes lightbringer is a valriyan steel sword.
If they kept the sword for 400 years it deserves to be calle the House's Ancestral Sword.
@@Hektolsyeap that's true in the books Ice is house stark new ancestral sword but Lightbringer was the first and oldest one
@@im_sai4600don't quote the books if you've never read them. You're obviously parroting some ill understood crazy theory off of some youtuber. Lightbringer is a mythological sword associated with the legend of Azor Ahai, the Starks have nothing to do with it as far as we know.
@@armandogutierrez473 yeah and Lightbringer itself is a myth from Essos, not Westeros. Literally has nothing to do with the Starks.
arya killing the night king is one of the worst writing decisions in history. absolute trash.
So rhaegar did not have a valyrian sword?????
Nope just a regular sword. Both blackfyre and dark sister were long lost by then.
I am the first
The Dark Sister is yours!
