- Join me for another sew with me sewing vlog! In this sewing tutorial, I will be vlogging the process of sewing a late summer/ early fall dress! I'm using the "Afghan Nomad Dress" sewing pattern by Folklore Patterns, but I'm hacking it up and using different fabrics and trims for a fun design. Join me to see the entire sewing process, including design inspiration, choosing fabrics and trims, cutting fabric, sewing, and the big reveal!
Update: A viewer from Afghanistan informed me that this dress would be considered traditional attire throughout Afghanistan, and that the word "nomad" would not apply well to this dress. Thank you for educating me about this style of dress!

I loved this as an Afghan who belongs to the nomad tribe!!! 🇦🇫🇦🇫 This is so beautiful and thank you for showcasing our culture in a beautiful way.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! This means so much to me! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
Hi dear 😊It is worn in two provinces of Pakistan and in Afghanistan. Because we belong to one ancestor. Thanks so much for making this beautiful dress. I love my dress 😍 . God bless you every step of life 🤗 love from Quetta 🙌💐
Thank you for watching and for your comment! It is so interesting to learn this style of clothing is also worn in Pakistan. Thank you for educating me 😊🤗

I first made this dress about 45 years ago. No idea where the original landed, but I'm remaking it now. Trimming the "hem" before attaching to the bodice.
That is so fun! I would like to see your original design. It is such a timeless look, it will never go out of style! 😊
Beautiful. Just to give you a reference about me, I have grandchildren about your age. I have always really liked boho styles and many various cultural type clothing so I was so delighted to see you create such a beautiful dress. Please continue to inspire your generation and those still to come. Your a lovely young woman.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I also really enjoy learning about clothing from different cultures - there is so much to discover! Thanks for watching! 😊
So well said!!!
Thank you as an afghani! This is so pretty and accurate 🥺💞
Wow thank you for your comment! It means a lot that you like the dress ❤️ thanks for watching 😊
That peachy trim is STUNNING! 😲
I agree, I love that trim so much! This is reminding me that I need to sew with more trim again. Thanks for watching 😊
Hi everyone! I hope you enjoy this sewing vlog. Since this pattern is based on traditional Afghan garments, I wanted to pop on here to acknowledge the situation in Afghanistan right now. My heart goes out to all those affected. If you want to learn more about how you can help support Afghan refugees arriving in Canada, visit the Government of Canada website here: www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/refugees/afghanistan/volunteer-donate.html
thank you
This dress is sublime. You have a very ‘good eye’ your fabric choices ie colour/ print and lace combinations work perfectly together. The length choice on you is extremely elegant. You could easily wear this to a wedding or special event. I loved this so much I subscribed, im seriously impressed.
Thank you so much for this comment! I really appreciate it. I spent a long time deciding on how to pair fabrics so I'm really glad it translated well :) thanks for watching!
The dress looks totally wearable. You sewed it well and it looks very sturdy. Good job.
Thank you so much for the comment! It is definitely sturdy with all the layers of fabric haha!
What a beautiful dress you have made! Thanks so much for sharing this. I was impressed by your fabric choices and strong design sense. It was wonderful and inspiring seeing a young person having so much fun with creative sewing.❤️
Hi Karen, thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you like the design - it is so fun to pair different fabrics and trims together to make something unique!
Thank you for making Afghan clothes, it’s beautiful and you are beautiful incredibly. I wonder if you are planning to make more Afghan clothes and people can buy from you too. Take care :)
Thank you for your kind comment and for watching my video! At this time, I'm not planning on making clothes to sell! But I would love to make similar clothes in the future and if I do, I will share the process ☺️
Hi, I'm actually really shocked as an Afghan to have read your title "Afghan Nomad Dress". For your reference this would be considered our traditional attire throughout Afghanistan. We have a very small population of Nomads (like many countries around the world) and they aren't usually as fancy due to their travels through harsh weather. Perhaps if you change the title, you may avoid upsetting other Afghans as well. Your dress was beautiful by the way, I'm inspired. Thanks for sharing.
Hi D K, thanks for your information! The pattern I made this from was called the Afghan nomad dress so I used that title, but I appreciate learning more about it! Really interesting to learn that it would be considered traditional throughout Afghanistan. I will certainly change my title to better reflect the true nature of the dress. Thanks for watching my video and sharing this knowledge with me! I love learning about clothing around the world :)
Absolutely beautiful and it looks fabulous on you, well done ❤
Thank you so much Heather! 😊
This is a work of art and you have done a beautiful job. I love your style and your keen eye for colours and fabrics. Just ran across your video yesterday and now subscribed and catching up. I’m curious if your love and obvious passion for textiles and fashion have led you (or are leading you) to a career involving both.
Thank you so much for watching, and for your kind comment! Currently, sewing and textiles are just a hobby, though I would love to make my passion in to a career someday! UA-cam is a fun way to start for me :)
Nice work Mel, well done to you
Thank you Wendy! 😊
It is beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Love this tutorial. Will you please make more tutorial like this 🥺🥺🙈 thankyou ❤️
Splendid dress, “definitely exactly my taste” as well! Congratulations on such a beautiful and elaborate piece, you look lovely in it.
Since you feel that it is too much fabric for summer wear, you might consider taking out some of the gathering on the skirt part to make it lighter? Just a thought.
❤
Thanks for watching and for the comment! Yes that is a good idea, maybe it could be shortened as well to make it less heavy (it weighs a lot right now!)
Haya. I have been eyeing up this pattern for a while & had similar ideas like you have to create different panels of fabric, seeing yours really makes me want to get the Afghan Nomad Dress, yay. You look amazing in yours. Thanku 'sew' much for sharing. x
So glad you found this one inspiring! I think this is the perfect pattern to play around with paneling and colourblocking! Let me know if you end up creating something with this pattern, I would love to see!
@@MadeByMelm Yup I will, it will go on my channel if I make it, tbh, after seeing yours I might just purchase it later. x
@@yougotmeinstitches1847 I will look out for it :)
Will you please make a detailed video on this dress size and neck cutting??
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 searching for this type 😇😇
Thank you for watching! 😊
The dress turned out so beautiful 😍
Can u please tell what’s the pattern u used?
Thank you for watching and for your comment! I used the "Folkwear Patterns Afghan Dress" pattern! 😊
An absolutely wonderful dress! May I ask, you mention a zipper, I don't recall that in the pattern that I just looked over quickly. Where did you insert the zipper?
Hi Linda, thanks for watching! You are right that the pattern doesn't include a zipper. The first time I made the bodice, it was too small for me to slip over my head, so I considered adding a zipper to help me get in and out. In the end I decided against the zipper and instead added width to the bodice through adding panels on either side. This allowed me to get the dress on over my head! Hope this helps!
is there a pattern available Mel
Hi Wendy, the pattern I used was the "Afghan Dress" Pattern by Folkwear patterns, available here: www.folkwear.com/en-ca/products/afghan-nomad-dress
You did not give details dress cutting stitching and size in the video. 🥺🥺
Hi Malo, thanks for watching! I used the "Folkwear Patterns Afghan Dress" pattern. I cut a size medium but it was too small around my shoulders, so I added extra fabric and it ended up being closer to the pattern's size large. I followed the instructions for the pattern for cutting and sewing. I turned the bodice piece so the slit neckline was in the front rather than in the back, as originally indicated in the pattern. I hope this helps!
Those typ of videos are neither ment nor allowed to make the buying of the pattetn voide and reciting all tge instructions
Is there a pattern for this dress
So i can try to sew
Yes the pattern is called "Afghan Dress" by Folkwear patterns
@@MadeByMelm thank you so much
