This dress would work in a decent cotton too I think or a sheet from a charity shop for those who can't afford linen.
I often buy sheets to use in quilting and sometimes dye them using shibori techniques, it keeps the price down

For everyone who can't read the impossibly small (and no contrast) text:
0:10 : I made up a muslin template for the body panel when I first designed this dress that I use for cutting (I base the sleeves and skirts from this) but the pattern download on my site is a full pattern
0:35 : All pieces, save pockets which I cut later. I am making this particular dress with a split, high low hem which is why the back skirt panel is longer
0:44 : First the back panels are sewn together, I use flat felled seams here. Next gather the skirt panels
0:55 : Anywhere from 1/2" to a full 1" is acceptable depending on how much allowance you prefer
1:19 : Topstitch that little flap down to the top panel on the front of both sides
1:45 : Wide hems for the skirt
2:07 : French seams from sleeve to hem
2:29 : Pin pockets in place where your hands naturally fall and top stitch
2:33 : Gingko leaf detail I always add to my little chest pockets using a soldering iron on a patch of leather. Then the whole dress goes into the washer and dryer

I'm working on my third dress from this basic pattern. I've changed little things each time, but every time, I've ended up with a dress I love and want to wear regularly! Thank you for sharing this so freely, and for all your great tips and tricks! And thank you for normalizing piecing! It's how sewing has long been done because fabric was/is expensive!

Love your music, your sewing methods and your casual approach. It makes it seem so stress free. It helps give me confidence to give this a go. I must also confess I covet your sewing machine. It reminds me of my first Singer treadle sewing machine. Truly a lovely piece of furniture which my children found endlessly interesting. Also it made life off grid in the early seventies in the New Mexico mountains much more interesting. Love the fact that somehow you have a zigzag stitch there on your machine . Your generosity in sharing the lovely dress pattern and your delightful voice and harp playing is appreciated. Thanks and keep creating joyfully. Marjorie from Georgia US🦚

By the look of the fabric I obviously did not, but by the look of the finished dress one can't tell so I skip ironing personally. That said, go forth and do as you prefer!

The triangle patch makes the dresses look like badges sewn onto WW2 Roma concentration camp prisoner garments. A bit scary!

Why would anybody want to dress like an Amish?

Why would anybody want to take time out of their day to insult both the people who like this style AND the Amish? I guess it takes all kinds...

Because I have better things to do than think about what I'm wearing. Gimme the same Amish thing to wear everyday.

Believe me, if the Amish felt insulted by anything anyone said about their clothing, they would consider it a failure on their own part, not the part of the critic. That's the exact point of what the Amish wear: to avoid ego. I know because I know them. You can wear the same thing every day without looking like you're in costume. I do.
The irony of making plain dress an ego thing....

Linen is very expensive. You must be rich.

This is two yards of fabric, cost about $25. A $25 dress is on par with Walmart prices.

Thank for making this video and your free pattern! I have a piece of linen I plan to make this dress with!
