This November will be the 10th time I am running NYCM..having ran all the majors and over 90 marathons around the world.. NYC is THE BEST!!!!! and, I agree, Heartbreak Hill is nothing compared to the NYC bridges and then gentle uphill into CP.
I’m running it this time too! I probably double the finishing time of yours but hopefully would be able to see you 👍🏻 Thanks to all the sharing so far 👏🏻
Cheers Ben. Inspirational video as usual. I am going to run this Nov NY marathon which is my final world majors. I forgot to book my transportation to start line. By the time I remembered, 8am ferry is the earliest available. Wish me good luck.
The way I mentally manage the last 10K is focusing on enjoying the flat/somewhat downhill of miles 20 ->22, prepare your mind to climb the full 23rd mile. A good focus during this mile is to watch the street numbers go down until you reach 90th street! You are then turning into central park, which is a huge party and some good downhill (just a little uphill but you are done with the hard stuff). You will reach 25 closer to the bottom of central park to then turn onto Central Park West, which will make you cry and then the finish line back into central park with everyone screaming and cheering you on is incomprehensible. It truly is the most incredible ending to a marathon out there.
This year it will be my third time running the NYC Marathon and my 12th marathon so far and definitely my NYC is my favorite, you are so right about getting into the city from Queens, it's the calm before the storm, I use that time to ask myself why do I run and my answer comes when I enter 1st Ave... the crowds cannot be described, you must experience it to understand it. One other thing, a different way to get to the start is by taking an Uber to the Giant (Met Life) Stadium in NJ and taking the bus, there's barely any lines and they drop you off at the start line. Just a thought.
The key to running New York is not to go out too fast the first 10-12 miles, because aside from mile 1, it will be a. Wry fast route, and if you’re I. Shape - you’ll be flying. But by mile 12-13 you will realize that you’ve made a mistake and especially as yoh hit queensborough bridge mile 15-16, you’ll be struggling and by the time you’re in mile 22-23 - you’ll be in the world of pain
Thanks for uploading this Ben, I’ve got in NY in a few weeks! All these tips so helpful 🙌🏻. Not sure how I feel about the steep bridges but I’ll try to embrace them 😂
Totally missed online sign up for transpo and bag check. NYRR told me to visit help desk at the Expo. I really hope they help. Coming from NJ so wife can drop me in S.I. early but really need to check a bag
Hi Ben I follow you I really appreciate all your videos and sharing your experiences and advises, Thank You I want to request you, if you can upload a video on race day pre -on- post fueling plan- what you do - what brands you recommend, Thank You
Great breakdown of the race. This year will be my 5th year doing the race. I'm lucky that I'm local. The only thing I would add is that none of the course is flat. Besides the bridges the entire course is tough.
Hey, WONDERFUL video as always. I missed registering for BUS or the FERRY, is there a way to be DROPPED OFF by Uber or friend directly in Staten Island. Will that be too painful with traffic?
Ben can I ask, did you wear a different shoe on the morning for the travel and all the waiting around or did you wear your running shoes? I’m running this year. TIA!
Love the race. Still my favourite of the 5 majors I've done. (Even ahead of my local. London) The "no bag drop" is a relatively new thing. The year I did it UPS were taking stuff from Staten Island to Central Park which worked well. I guess they lost the sponsorship
Found that NYC is more difficult than Boston. Boston's rolling hills helps with catching some speed. That said, NYC is electric and the crowd will get you through it!
I ve got this cunning plan to one year in the future- run Chicago marathon in Oct. And then causually run across to New York by Nov in time to do marathon. And get Ihop to sponsor me!!! Feel free to take my idea and explain the best way to do it lol Or Add San Fran marathon in July too perhaps??
I love the thought of doing these Majors around the world but all the faff involved sort of puts me off, I love New York having worked there a few years ago and it would be the one I would probably deal with the faff but it's hard to get in unless have a quali time or a UA-camr/influencer and get in with a sponsor which seems many do these days (Not you Ben) It is great though to see your videos of these great racers and for many of us we live the dream through your hard work... Enjoy Australia...
Why can't they just start the race at Central Park and save everyone the trouble of getting out to Staten Island. Would allow the inclusion of another different NYC bridge instead.

I’ll be running NYC this year for the first time and I cannot wait.
@@Zak_Meents enjoy every step and Brooklyn is the greatest party!!
Hands down best crowd
Love this! I haven't run the marathon, but I run from Queens to Manhattan most weekends, and the climb on the Queensboro Bridge is real 😮
I’m running it this time too! I probably double the finishing time of yours but hopefully would be able to see you 👍🏻

Going for Sub 3 hours, and this is VERY helpful! The crowd looks electric ⚡️👏🏻

Saving this for next year, I'm ringing the bell in Staten Island this Sunday.
Cheers Ben. Very informative and it’s coming around so quick now. This will be my 5th star !

Thanks for the amazing info! It's going to be my first time running the NYC Marathon so this is very helpful!

I've just done the Chester Marathon last week. Got my first sub 3 at 2:56. Its a hilly route just like this New York Marathon.
Man i cannot wait! less than a month 🤩
missed you saying - "hello everybody"
You mean "HELLOEVBODIIIEEEE"

Any tips on actually getting registered? THat's probably the hardest bit!

London is still my favourite, but New York was a close 2nd. But man, what a killer course, those hills destroyed my legs! 🙁

My first marathon will be Copenhagen next year.
Post Boston has changed how marathon events were organized in the US
It's not the only marathon in the world that starts over a huge bridge ;)
Why can't they just start the race at Central Park and save everyone the trouble of getting out to Staten Island. Would allow the inclusion of another different NYC bridge instead.
Can family members go with you to the start line?
They can not.
