In many aspects, this game addresses the exact type of game I've been trying to develop myself: a Pirate themed TRPG, albeit they went with a more random formula while I'm trying to cover historical facts (I come from a City which historically has a lot of Pirates so I want to include that in it). This and Expeditions: Conquistador are the two games that most closely resemble what I want to achieve, it is really appreciated for me that you do this review. To you, reader, May you wander in wisdom
I think there's a market for shorter, cost effective games for people like me who don't always have a ton of time to commit but want to explore new stories. I'd love it if a studio just ran a series of 1 or 2 act adventures with the same game engine and mechanics so I could blow through them. As long as this one's cheap enough, they had me at "loot based experience".
30 hours is a good number and if a good game worth whatever they want. Saying that I normally now wait for sale. 10 hours is 3 evening playtime. There is no mention of any replayability, and has it seems linear it is a one time play. I normally play these game once anyway so replayability is mote. I got stung with Thaumaturge recently as that finished before I had got into it. Wait for sale I think.
I'm not saying it's a long game but I tend to think if Mort says a game lasts a certain amount of time you can usually times that by 1.5 (so 15 in this case). He's a master at motoring through games without pause. Most of the rest of us are going to get distracted, fiddle with things a bit more and generally play through slower because we don't have another game queued up to play afterwards already. Plus the review doesn't actually mention a price anyway.
So a pure tactics game disguised as a cRPG then ? Those are fun too but I was hoping for more, no point moving on a map if there is very little to find and only one linear path.
It's very important to know how short this game is. There are many other Pirate themed RPGs where you'll get a lot of bang for your buck. Hope this'll get a sale at some point
Thanks Mortym! Comic book style to handle the story looks cool. I've just picked up several indie games all for about $20, and I have been (again) delightfully surprised. I like it when things get weird. Onward!
I absolutely love that the game's tutorial instructs you to commit cannibalism at the very beginning. Such a fun game, glad to have been given a review copy weeks ago.
I'm ok with the short length, sometimes I just want a game I can consume in a session or two, and the bugs and glitches can hopefully be fixed with patches, but what I really don't like are the artstyle inconsistencies for some reason. Having all the portraits and world be this semi-realistic "authentic" pirate look of the era, then the cutscenes go into this "Dark Horse comic" style is really weird imo. I know that's a odd thing to gripe about but it's really throwing me off lol
Consider the replayability of crpgs when you consider price, and this guy is a beast. 10 hrs for this guy is like 20 to 30+ for normies like me. He burns through games at an insane speed, for these videos, not a critique. I dont know, just things to consider maybe.
Upwards of 200 hours for pfwotr doens't feel like "burns through". But I suspect it is and you're not wrong. Even for regular reviews' estimate of game length I know I'm going to be 20% longer, minimum. And even then might be an 84% run.
I have to ask, how do you keep yourself motivated to play all these games? I have several games That I have started or played halfway through but then life happened (or boredom) and was never able to finish. By the time I come back to them (months/years later) I have to restart as I have no clue what I was doing. The problem is I can't stand the slog that the start of many games have and I am just never able to pick the game back up. This is particularly an issue when it comes to crpgs and jrpg style games. I'm trying not to by new games until I at least beat the list of unfinished games. Some or all you have reviewed. Dragon Age: Origins Shadows: Awakening Dragons Dogma Fallout: New Vegas Greedfall Skyrim Divinity: OS 1 and 2 Pillars of Eternity Tower of Time Tyranny Edge of Eternity Everspace 2 You have any tips on staying motivated? I have no problem with games like Outward, Elden Ring, Remnant 1&2, Zelda, Soul Reaver, Asterigos, etc...
Just accept that some games don't click, ignore them and move on. I'm in the same situation, having bought a lot of deep RPGs like DOS2 and BG3 but just can't get through them because of how bored I get. Don't let sunk cost fallacy stand in the way of playing the games you actually enjoy.
Thanks for the video. Not difficult? Uh... I am a potato, and a mashed one at that. A marshmallow is had by comparison. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
Hey Mort, do you always include the approximate length of the game you are reviewing? If not, that would be a welcomed addition to each review. The length of a game is actually really important for busy blokes like me. If a game is short, I'm more likely to make an impulse buy (especially if you give it a positive review). The bigger, longer games can be a tough decision to get into because of the time commitment required for a proper playthrough. "How long to play" helps me to know how to prioritize when I'm considering picking up a title.
@ryandavid1277 yeah I know it's an unpopular opinion I know 😁 just played out in my eyes - always the same tropes etc with little variation. I love dark/Gothic fantasy, retrofuturism (think aliens), cyberpunk (bit overdone I know) and historical settings :)
Great video. By this point, even I am not interested in the game, I’ll still watch your review videos just to support your hard work! Always well done!
I think it's worth mentioning that the intro of the story is the exact recreation of the beginning of Roman Polansky' "Pirates". The writers of this game are definitely men of culture.
It’s a shame it didn’t launch on game pass as was rumored. Apparently it’s $40, which is maybe going to hurt its success. I’d like to play it, but not for $40… I think I’d enjoy it.
@@MortismalGaming Well... It's $40 on console PS/Xbox... and $50 on Switch... yet it's on sale currently on Steam for $20. I've never seen such disparity in pricing.

Agreed, I will be waiting for a sale and time for them to fix the bugs 😁
If I see this on sale I'm definitely getting it, thanks
Great review. Been waiting for this, but 10 hours seems a bit short. Not against shorter games but a bit costly at £35.
Agreed
For 35, don't think so. Games costing 60 usually are 20-30 hours.

10 hours of entertainment for £35 is great value. Having only just finished Octopath 2 I’m in the market for a shorter game

Glad I caught your review. I was looking forward to the game's release, but now pretty disappointed about how short & shallow it is.
I absolutely love that the game's tutorial instructs you to commit cannibalism at the very beginning. Such a fun game, glad to have been given a review copy weeks ago.
Love the inclusion of steam deck workings. Using for most of my rpg gaming lately
So it's a Treasure Island prequel?
I believe that was the Show Black Flag.
You play as James Flint. That practically makes it an unofficial "Black Sails The TRPG".
@@truckingwithatablet4489 Yeah, but I do believe Treasure Island came first, being from 1883 and all.
Correction Black Sails.
@LuiBang that could by technically true.

This looks pretty good. Thanks for the Steam Deck section. This is exactly the type of game that is built for it.

Sounds like a good buy on a sale. Cool theme and decent combat.
Another fantastic review! This is high on my wish list. Any chance you could do a video on the pirate genre in general and cover your top X?
Certainly a possibility
With Shadow Gambit and Rogue Waters, this has been a good time recently for pirate tactics games!
Thank you for the review, was going to get this one, but not sure it will be for me.
More story driven is what I'm looking for.

Sir, may i know which mic you are using, do you have the affiliate link? Thank you
SM7B, and no
PlayStation store has it listed as $40. Seems grossly overpriced for a game of this size
Yeah I definitely want this, but I'll wait for it to have a sale.
I'll check out if its on sale. Looks fun

Dragon Age: Origins
Shadows: Awakening
Dragons Dogma
Fallout: New Vegas
Greedfall
Skyrim
Divinity: OS 1 and 2
Pillars of Eternity
Tower of Time
Tyranny
Edge of Eternity
Everspace 2

I love games and its also my job so I get paid for all of this, for me thats more than enough, hard to say for others though

I like pirate setting, but have zero experience with turn based games; should I give it a chance or should I look for other games?
I probably wouldnt start here, no

I usually do yeah
I love the best-a-gon hexagon tabletop aestetic - if only I wouldn't hate the whole pirate scenario this would be a awesome game to check out.
This is the first time I've seen someone dislike pirates! What kind of settings are you into?

@@mothermeeting nothing wrong with that! Nice choices.
Looks great but 10 hours is a pass for me. I just can’t get engaged by something so short. Right or wrong it’s always been a problem for me
This reminds me of Expeditions: Conquistador and if that is true, then it will be a great game.
I'll be streaming this tomorrow but your guide is SUPER helpful to get me sailing int he right direction. Thanks so much!

A 10 hour TRPG sounds SWEET.
I thought this game was supposed to come out like 3 times already lmao
Welcome back Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire
Fun review, looks good but a 10 romp is not worth anything over 20!
just wanna remind you that your the GOAT game reviewer
Congrats man. B/G?
If you're looking for more RPG pirate games with a good amount of content Mortismal, may I interest you in Cat Quest 3.
It looks so fun but 10 hours for 35 dollars. I am gonna have to wait for a sale. This game is right up my alley though.
Just checked the price....It is listed for $50 but is on sale for $30!

I wish these games would get console releases

I like the occasional pirate game, get a bottle of Kraken and have a nice pirate weekend.
Comment for Al Gore Rhythm.
Seems like a skip for me.
does anybody else say “what’s going on everybody…Mortym here…” in their best Mortym voice when the intro music begins.
…
…
No? Just me?
I've done it for other intros. Can't recall ever doing it for Mortim in particular though
I wanted to get it, looks really good but 10 hours for a rpg is way to short
free comment has arrived.
I watched a french review that said the game is at 39€ (google tells me it's like 40 dollars)
