What’s it like to drive a 2021 Mustang Mach E?

  • I recently had the opportunity to drive a 2021 Ford Mustang Mach E (First Edition), and it was every bit as good as I thought it would be.
This particular Mach E First Edition (E4 X) is a dual motor model with 346hp and 428 lb/ft of torque. It’s fast. Ridiculously fast.
This Ford Mustang Mach E review shows what it feels like to drive one of these things for the very first time.
Considering that this was the first time that I had ever driven an electric vehicle, there were all sorts of new sensations indeed.

@@driveandreview How do you like it? Is this the Tesla killer that everyone is saying?

I really liked it! I haven’t driven a Tesla yet, so it’s hard to compare, but it’s a very impressive vehicle.

@@driveandreview It's the utility car of the year. People in Germany are going crazy for it. The time of smaller cars is over because they can support the battery room needed. Besides, the only reason why people bought smaller cars was due to the better gas mileage.

I think if you beefed up the tires, you will be rewarded with better handling in the twisties!

Nice review Scott. As a car nut myself, my worry with electric cars is a lack of soul. Fine for commuting, but I just can’t see them ever comparing to a powerful combustion engine..... especially with a manual gearbox when you want to have fun.

Thanks Neil! I was a bit skeptical at first, but this experience completely changed my perception about EVs. I’m always going to have a V-8 sports car with a manual transmission as a toy, but I can totally see me switching to an electric daily driver relatively soon.

I was also initially confused about the "Mustang" naming decision. Now that I've had time to think about it, it's actually genius. The Mustang name gave Ford an already established well of heritage styling cues to use. Ford probably would have had a harder time selling this as a Fusion or Focus electric crossover with much more bland styling.
All cars are eventually going electric in next 10-15 years. Ford doesn't care about the people that would never buy an electric Mustang crossover because this car isn't targeted towards those people.

Time will tell if using the Mustang name was a good idea or not. Like you, I am guessing that it’s going to work out pretty well. Ford really hit a homerun with the Mach E!

Once you get more familiar with EVs and regen braking, taking one to the canyons is incredibly fun. I have a Chevy Bolt and kept up with a 911 in 21 miles of "spirited" driving in very tight hairpins and long sweepers. I used the actual brakes about twice :-)
I truly cannot wait to test drive the Mach E GT Performance model with the MagneRide suspension and more powerful motors. .

The regenerative braking definitely took some time to get used to! At first I loved it. Then I hated it. Then I loved it again. 😂 it’s nice that they gave us the option to turn it off though. I can definitely seeing it being a little too weird for some drivers.

You can turn off auto hold and 1 petal driving and the car will roll.

I am so conflicted on this car. I love the car’s looks and the tech and performance look so awesome… I could even accept “Mach E” on its own… but adding the pony and the Mustang name are a bit far. Alternately, it would be a laugh to call it the “Model E”, after the Tesla lawsuit over the Model 3 😈

It was a stretch to put the mustang name on it for sure, but I’m really curious to see how its all going to play out over the long term. And there was a lot about the Mach E that was Tesla-like as well - not only that big touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, but other little details such as the naming for the different driving modes. For example, the go fast mode is called “unbridled” - which is an obvious play on the “Ludicrous” mode you’d find on a Tesla.

I can help you out with your dilemma concerning the Mustang nameplate for this car. It's really very simple. Ford owns the name and can put it on any car they sell. So it IS a Mustang, irrespective of anyone's opinion on the matter. The specs I found for a 2012 Mustang GT (any trim) indicate a few tenths of a second difference in 0-60 time from the car you drive in this video. Not enough to even mention. If it helps, I can tell you that the Mustang name on this car is analogous to your facial hair. That is to say, you may call it a mustache or beard, but it isn't in the traditional sense. And yet, it actually is by virtue of being hair on your upper lip and hair on your jaws. You can't actually grow either, but that's what you have to call it. Similarly, the Mach E has no engine, but you must still call it a Mustang, since Ford owns the rights to that name and they have named it as such. If the Mach E had wider tires, it would handle just about as well as your ICE Mustang. The only limitation would be the weight. But it still corners flatter than your car.

Oh no, they have turned you to the electric side Scott?? I also questioned the use of the name Mustang on the car and like you, I have not driven an electric car yet. If I was still living in Portland I probably would be able to find one to drive but living in Iowa right now it might be a while before I can drive one, unless I can find a company that rents them on one of the journeys in the next couple of years.

    • @driveandreview
      @driveandreview  3 роки тому +1

Haha, yeah, I didn’t think I would be turning to the electric side so soon. 😂 i’ll always have a V-8 sports car (with a manual transmission) in my garage, but I’d love to have an EV as a daily driver for sure. Anyway, if you ever get the chance to drive one of these (or a Tesla), jump on it! It’s a really neat experience.
