You know, that’s not a million miles from the little hippie tops we wore in in the early 70s. Very cute, and acute detective work. A ‘touch me’ dress with a ‘do not touch me’ belt, very a la mode

I was thinking that too. Back in those days, bras were left I the drawer so the top had to do whatever was done in the final shape. Nothing for support, but as a teen I didn't much care.

As a bra maker you did really well with the fitting! Just a tip for anyone recreating: if you want more volume in these cups try cutting it horizontally at the centre, not at the top of the cups. This should give you a more projected "bra" shape, if that's the look you're going for. Morgan's method probably works better for a more classic bodice look though
Do you have any tips for ladies that have bigger cups size (us size h+) but smaller bands and making garments that have support but don’t use a bra? Or general tips?
@@skullsrnneed It really depends on what you're looking for, in general finding boned patterns, making sure you're using a strong material to lime bodices, and getting comfortable with full bust adjustments will go a long way. I would suggest taking a look at the corset making community
You're so right about the horizontal idea, creating a sort of shelf for the breast to sit onto. Would you have any tips for someone whose trying to get enough depth from a horizontal pattern, but the cup goes flat once it's tried on?

It looks like a slip my Gran made for me when I started to fill out as a teen. Her and my great-Gran knit a wool one to go over it in the winter. Looking back it was my most lived in article of clothing. They made it out of layers of really thin linen and I had it until it fell off me and couldn't be patched anymore. Pretty sure my mom secretly disposed of it. Lol
The lacing was small and on both sides and we used elastic string for to lace.
A knitted wool slip? Wow! Was it itchy?
@@2degucitas yes at first . I had to use vinegar to soften it regularly, they chose a yarn that was soft but it still was rougher than what I was used to.

Massive fan of the accidental sexy midpoint... there's just something super fun about the idea of making a risqué version for any medieval garment. Also looking forward to a sprang-learning video someday in the future lol
All of a sudden "sexy + (insert epoch here)" Halloween costumes don't seem soooo blasphemous. Maybe it's just the plasticky and possibly flammable fabric.

Here in Sweden, bathing suit wasn't recommend for swimming / Bathing but for walking at the beaches , because the wet fabric would cool you down and get you sick and that would be dangerous, so go to cold swim house and bathe naked instead. I have a book from 1850 talking about the healthy and long held tradition of swimming naked here and how it makes people strong and gentle.
Oh I am sure so much of it is cultural - what with Sweden/Finland/Germany having a pretty well-established tradition of bathing naked and/or having sauna naked. And I'm sure it differed by century - the 18th century might have been more OK with naked bathing than the 19th, for instance. In the recent adaptation of Sanditon they show that the men are swimming naked whereas the women have to do the whole bathing machine bathing gown shenanigans.

I think that was somewhat a thing is the US during the time of the founding fathers as well. Some people preferred naked dipping in the rivers and I don't think swimming garment was that well established. A lot of the colonies were founded with rather prudish communities so it was really a thing men did and only ever alone or with trusted people. That makes me think of if swimming was even popular as a past time in those days or if people primarily just saw it for cleaning and not much as a doing it just to swim. In the late 1800s to mid 1900s swimming garments tended to be more full body and somewhat more meant for wading than diving around or anything. I guess it makes sense when you think of what kind of fabrics we had available. I don't know if it would feel comfortable to get wet in those types of clothes unless they were made highly woven or flowy.
And no doubt helped me little baby Swedes.......
I looove this! As someone who can NEVER find a bra that fits right, this medieval option looks so comfy. And linen in the summer is a dream. I may have to buy this pattern, as my drafting skills aren't there yet
Have a go. Use really big seams so you can keep adjusting. Worth a try. Especially if you can use fabric you already have like old bed linens that have a few holes. I’ve got pyjamas made out of a quilt cover that I made from no pattern.
Ever since I first started sewing, I always wondered if I could make my own bras. I told myself that no one ever does it and it must be really complicated. Well now, look at this!
@Dee S I've got a nice sized inherited stash of fabrics. I'm slowly working through it. Definitely some linens in there. I've made a few bedgowns and a skirt already
I gave up on trying to wear bras long ago. It was miraculous when I finally learned the whole truth of "don't add band inches when doing the measurement that's just demanded because they don't sell enough sizes" etc, but it was just too expensive to experiment much with! Now I think, what if I had actually engaged with the... uh.. tailoring community back then? Could have been really useful.

"You know how sometimes you look at a bra and go 'eeeeeeeh I don't think that bra is gonna fit me'" That thought is precisely why I switched to wearing historical corsets over bras on the daily. Tiny ribcage + large bust = 🙃

Part of the reason why the Duct tape pattern was fitting the way it was on the 1st sample is because you did not fit exactly to your chest. Since you taped yourself in to a mono-bossom the pattern made a mono-bossom garment.
A big part of the issue with the first mockup was probably the tape form being taken with a bra on. It's always better to draft a support garment from the point your breasts just kinda naturally are.

My understanding is the Donners have been married for a good time maybe 8or so years so I'm sure he's used to helping her with her shenanigans. My husband and I have been married 9 years. My husband is a great help and is a handy extra hand. He's may not get my vision but says "how can I help?" Where do you want me to pinch and pin?

This bra with just a few tiny modifications looks way more comfortable than most bra they sell at wamart
What I noticed in the "string-fitting" garment was how perfectly flat to your chestbone the top part rested. The strings curved nicely over each side, giving a sense of separation and shape.
But in the finished garment the top part popped away from your skin, and you got more of a monoboob effect.
I think what this garment really needs is for the circles cut into the chest binder to be completed, not just crescent moon shapes. Don't sew the cups to each other. Let there be separation between the breasts and increase the depth of the cups on the inner sides. The chest portion of the garment should fit flat against the chest, not angled away at all. And you were exactly correct that the seams of the first try were in the wrong place. The seams belong at the crease (all around) where your breast starts and your chest ends.
Sprang is a very stretchy sort of weave, similar to a string shopping bag, or a hairnet. It supports vertically, but allows free stretch sideways. This may have been put there to allow for chest expansion while reaching and lifting.
If you can make a chest portion that fits closely to your body, with holes that your breasts fit comfortably through, but with the edges of those holes precisely where your breast edges are, then the way to fit the breasts perfectly would be to put a circle of fabric over each breast and pinch out the darts needed, while wearing the chest foundation.
That is how the fit could be improved for a look mire expected or flattering for modern eyes. Cause we only have the one extant garment and it doesn't look like they did that it’s not as likely to be accurate? But who knows. We only have one garment and it was for a smaller-breasted person
I completely agree with you. The chest gore is where the major difference is between her’s and the historical garment.

@@annedavis3340 You're right, I'm making assumptions. Sorry. My own breasts are widely-spaced and do well with center chest support, but not everyone is built that way. Someone with little to no space between their breasts would find it most comfortable sewn as shown.
@@Marialla. yes, that's also true! Mine are very large but the roots are rather close to each other, I can’t even put a finger flat on my sternum between them without touching both At once. I always think it's so interesting how varied human breasts are, there's asymmetry as well.

I am very big (they’re as big as my head!!!) with a small back and I desperately need something to wear at night as absolutely nothing I have found helps with the uncomfortable smoosh when I lie on my side. I have permanent vertical wrinkles on my chest which I hate. Your comment and this video is going to really help me make something to help, thanks all!
My spouse and I were literally talking like last week about whether I could try making a custom bra for my ridiculously-sensitive, thin EDS skin that would fit my proportionately-large chest and, um, yeah I guess so. Wish I could sew well enough but I kinda want to try it now.
Go for it!! If your first attempt isn’t something that you want to show anyone then rename it prototype 1. Your sewing will improve as will your prototypes!! Oh and start your testing with a sheeting material or a sheet that only has edges of good material!! I’m sure you can make something great that you will enjoy.
There are SOOOO many bra patterns out there now, from the modern underwire styles, to bralettes, to the highly structured but without boning styles of the 40s & 50s. There's also kits with all the finding you could need. Depending on what adjustments you need to make (no elastic, no metal, etc), you may have to do a little zhuzhing of your own, but I think it's a very doable project!
My favorite bras for those of us that are "big rack, small back" are from a Polish company named Comexim. I get the best rate by ordering direct (about $50 for 1 bra inc shipping), plus they'll even do small customizations for free (like make it 3 hook vs 2 hook, move a strap in a bit, make this style bra but with the fabric from that style, make it a longline, etc). I find the 3HC style works best, but everyone's shaped differently; I have short roots, my girls are fuller on the bottom & in the center, & I'm very projected. I find the wires in these bras arent so tall they stabinate my armpits, haha! Once I found these, I was, like, "OMG! I don't need to rip off my bra as I'm walking in the door at the end of the day anymore!"
ahem. I've digressed a bit. ;-) Anyway, you might get more info on how to fit yourself from r/abrathatfits & it could help you towards finding a company you might like, and even just to give you ideas about better ways to fit one you make yourself.
@@brendaleelydon I'm very familiar with abtf :) my issue is that my skin is so sensitive that even a well-fitting bra will abrade the tissue under the bottom of the band - I have scars on my ribs and where the middle of the front meets my chest. I never ended up ordering from comexim or ewa michalak but they were on my list.
@@Llepidoptra That was kinda the idea I was getting when you mentioned EDS. :-/ Do you know what fabrics could work for you? Since you seem pretty knowledgeable already, I presume you've heard of the Breast Nest? When I'm out of the house, I prefer the girls front & center, but when I'm home, I just don't want them touching my skin, haha.
I have had great luck with using those washable 'bra saver' thingies that go between your band & your skin, because I sweat so much (thanks, anxiety!) that I get open sores, etc. I use those things even on my 'at home' bras. My favorites are the all bamboo ones, but I like my bamboo/cotton terry ones too. I wonder if a wool or silk or well-worn linen would work for you as an additional barrier when you find a product that works fairly well?

FYI, another EDSer here. This bra does not work at all for small band, large cup. I’ve tried a dozen times or more.

It definitely could be! I have a suspicion though that the strongest factor affecting the first mock-up was wearing clothing and a bra underneath the duct tape, and how the cling film sort of extra smoothed things out. If you compare my first mock-up and how I looked in the duct tape, I think that they are actually quite close! It just turns out that wasn't quite what I wanted for the finished product 😉

@Phantom I saw someone use duct tape to wax their legs as part of a comparison on hair removal products and it looks like it took off skin. Deffo not something I'd want to try!

YES! The Lengburg bra!! I've been fascinated by it for so long, especially as a more... 'top-heavy' woman, wondering how people like me managed in the past!
I wonder how much the lacing, cording, shaping of this garment ties in with the gradual move towards the stays and bodices of later centuries? I wonder if there was more cording, stiffening being added, and shaping in undergarments?
We'll never really know, but fascinating to think about!
Since it’s for going to a bath, a communal activity, it wouldn’t get a lot of structure. As soon as you got wet that’d be miserable. This was a very simple modesty garment around other women.
Women didn’t get enormous tatas so much in the past, no synthetic hormones and limited calories kept them under control. A D cup was the largest bra stores regularly stocked until the ‘80’s when we all exploded into G and H.
Kirtles had structure to support and were a regular daily first layer. You can search this on YT.
I think you‘re wrong. Women were big in the past, just look at old paintings and Catherine the great. Plus I‘m a relatively skinny Person with E or F cups, cup sizes aren‘t absolute, they are relative to underbust circumference.
Not always, some of use have wider bands for our smaller cup size and need extenders

I concur! She's effortlessly a 50's pinup girl, with a bit more modesty. It's a combination not many can pull off. It doesn't come across as sexy per se, more a classic beauty.

I had the pleasure to look at the original piece and drew the patterns for several garments from this finds some years back during my archaelogy studies.
Lmao, I literally just commented on an Elden Ring let’s play about how weird it is that FromSoftware games always have female character underwear shown as a simple tied of piece of cloth. The unflatteringly named Breast Bags were a thing. They even had smocks with support and the under bodice.
(High school Latin scholar here.)
The image referenced in the beginning of the women lifting weights strongly reminds me of a Roman bath, especially given the medium of the image itself.
Roman baths also had small gymnasiums. Women would use the public bath in the mornings and then the men would take over for the rest of the day. It seems to me that these clothing articles were more used for support while lifting weights in the gym prior to cleansing in the baths. Naked. That’s my two cents.
(I should also note that I am by no means an expert in this field, as this was information learned in high school and am now well into my 30s so…yeah. Disclaimer and stuff.)
I’ve also seen those referred to as athletic clothes, basically sport bras.

OMW, when you said, "I think I could make the cups a bit more round" I was so worried you wouldn't realize you just needed a LOT more fullness in the cups, heh heh. I would likely add even more, honestly, though at a certain point you run into Breast Nest syndrome, and while comfy, is A Lewk, to say the least! Very cute garment!!

The one thing I have found out from using duck tape forms is they tend to squish the body a bit more than is comfortable. If you are going to do a duck tape form just lay the tape on as loosely as possible, from one end of the tape to the other. Having the shirt and modern bra on under probably helped keep it from being too tight but you also lost some of the contouring you needed. That is why you had to add to the cups. But overall this is a good video and hopefully you can find a nice hot spring to try it at since that is the closest we have to bathhouses.

OMG I’d LOOOOVE to have like five of these to use as undergarments! I always wear dresses and this would make an excellent option for summer days where underwire isn’t so nice and anything other than linen directly against your bare skin is YUCKKK!
Add in some drop down straps for use in nursing and you’re literally sitting on a GOLD MINE. Honestly, I wish I could commission these from you, they’re that amazing. I think you should consider drafting these and patenting the design. Not even kidding.
I never even thought about using the duck tape method! I have attempted a Lengberg bra pattern three times now and have just tabled it because I just couldn’t get it to work for me. Like, at all. Even when basing it on my fitted medieval block. Thanks for showing your process!
If you do try the duct tape method, my advice is get someone else to wrap you up, especially in the back (speaking from experience. I had duct tape all over myself, and not necessarily all of it had the protective film wrap between it and me😅😂)

Ooh, I'm so excited you tried out the Lengberg Bra/Dress! I didn't know about bath dresses before and just imagined everyone was skinny dipping and that the bra/bodice was made for someone who wanted more support under a shift and kirtle.
The round cups give me 80's comic book Valkyrie armour vibes, but, like, as a cute summer dress 😆. Maybe because the seams are lighter than the rest of the dress and accentuate the pattern pieces, idk.
Your method of adjusting the pattern with those loose seams and the "surprisingly sexy" look is very smart, looks like way less fuss than ripping open and basting together again and again!

Loving this, I've found during the last couple years that bra sizing is so fickle and inconsistent to the point of going without while at home/remote, the top portion looks like a wonderful substitution (and I'm all about hand sewing, so seeing this manageable without a machine is reassuring). Thank you!
a very clever way to get a better fitting! reminds me of a lot of fashion bralettes.
for anyone else watching that would like to use this idea as an everyday undergarment, i really recommend looking up bra drafting and fitting, as the center gore is meant to lay flat on the chest between the cups. it makes the bodice a lot more comfortable and easier to move in underneath other layers.
I watched this video when it came out, but didn't get a chance to finish it. While sitting here in my husbands hospital room I decided to watch the end. So glad I did!!! I needed a laugh. It was very much not a terrible idea. Thank you. :)
You look so dang cute throughout this video! Rocking the hair. As I try to grow my hair out, I can't stand the bits around the neck and end up shaving too much off. Regrowing hair (if that's your goal) is an extreme exercise in patience.

Took me 1,5 years to go from pixie to chin length...because I just couldn't resist going for a 'tidying up' cut every 3-4 months. In my defense: I have to look somewhat presentable for work...but still. Sigh. Now it's all one length, but looks boring as all heck. Like a helmet.

I've recently bought a pair of clip on (natural hair) bangs, btw. Highly recommend, if you ever get that itch again. Looks totally natural.

I know theyre totally different garments but this bath dress reminds me of the summer dresses worn in Kenneth Branagh's A Much Ado About Nothing - in the opening scenes all the characters run into the open baths with their white linens on 😆. Im now wishing for warmer happy days

Absolutely comfy! Both the first mock-up and the final result, very pleased with how comfortable they are
I think that center front piece would look lovely with some "cutwork embroidery." Basically, you embroider a lace-like design and then cut out the negative space after. The embroidery keeps the cut threads from unraveling. It's really lovely and wouldn't require that panel to be removed at all.
I was so impressed by the transformation from the first version to the second, when she just replaced the cups. When I saw the first one, I was like "wow that's a bummer, it doesn't fit her bust/cup size at all and she'll have to redo it." But then just by using a really ingenious method to measure the needed additional cup size and then remaking the cups, she made it fit so much better for the second attempt. Really impressive! Also, I was living for the "accidentally sexy" top in the middle there lol.
Morgan is a fitting master. As someone who really loathes fitting, I admire her persistence and ability to avoid being discouraged so much
It looks so comfy, a great base layer or summer dress! The difference the cup shape made was also very interesting, and I'm kinda here for the laced-up mockup version, too :D I also love that you actually went and took a shower and bath in this. Though, from those medieval images it looked more like the garment was meant for working in hot, humid, environments and not for bathing specifically. But yeah, interesting deep dive in medieval undergarments, and a really cute end result!

I’ve been toying with the idea of making my own bras for some time now, since the majority of store bought bras are so uncomfortable, so I find myself wearing sports bras the majority of the time, but there are also drawbacks to this, because there are some garments that just don’t look right if you’re wearing a sports bra underneath. Definitely a concept I want to continue to explore.
You just gave me an idea, I will try to explore. Sports bras are made of a stretchy fabric, so how about making the front bra in a firm woven fabric for the hold and then make the back from a stretchy jersey fabric in order to make it fit without the laces, and make it easier to wear.

i know absolutely nothing about sewing or making clothing (apart from the basic back stitch my grandma taught me as a child) but i still love this video. it’s so informative and interesting and i love how articulate yet entertaining morgan is. great video :)

I had a summer dress shaped a lot like that. It had the ability to tie tiers in the skirt to shorten it slightly if desired.

Your videos are always so fun and innovative! I'd always wondered what the Lemburg bra would look like with more than a tenth of its fabric remaining -- it's so satisfying to see the beautiful final results!
A part of me really wants to go in and add embroidery all around it. I think some wildflowers springing from the hem and a nice border design along the top of the bodice would be cute.

i wasnt sure about this vid at the start, but as you made your pattern and started the mock up i fell in love :D with that pattern and the knowledge to do literally ANYTHING to change it, the world could be your oyster for dresses :P im hoping to do some crazy mad scientist stuff with this like you did on circle day, cus i freaking loved the circle skirt thing and i would LIVE in them with a nice pair of leggings underneath :P
It does look so feminine and cute! It looks a lot like a slip to me and I would definitely love a slip with lacing so it would still fit when my weight fluctuates.

The side lacing is so feminine! Wish more garments had that. I would feel so awesome wearing it!
Honestly, side lacing is the best thing since sliced bread! My size has been rather... uh... inconsistent over the years, and I found a couple garments I loved no longer fit... so my fiance - who is a much more accomplished seamster than I am - added side lacing down them. Now, they are so much more comfortable and they will fit no matter how my body changes.
If you want more info on the process of adding side lacing, lemme know and I'll explain in more depth.
That makes a really beautiful summerdress !!! (In the 70ies I owned a ~1900 white slipdress which was perfect for summer)..."sprang" seems to be quite easy - lots of tutorials...the bikini-girls 1:04 look to me like ancient greek female athletics... 🙂

When you said bath-house dress that the workers of bathhouses wore, my mind went directly to Korean spas/jjimjilbangs (in Korea, I don't have reference outside of Korea) and the older women that did the scrub downs on the women's side that wore black bras and black undies so that could be easily identified in the steam 😂😂
The netting in the front of the original garment (I think you called it sprang?) looks similar to fabric produced with crochet. The type of crochet used for making lace and doilies. Beautiful creation!
Duck tape patterns remind me of going a step further 25 years ago and making a custom dress form the same way and then stuffing it with old towels!
Darn now I want one too!!! I would have to drive 6 hours to either my daughters or to a friends to get helpers!! Still I love the idea of trying to make my own.
I’m incredibly tired of things not fitting and manufacturing making up numbers that they pretend are measurements!! How can two identically labeled bras have a 2” variation of band length?!? That’s really a pain when shopping online. Think that I will try and figure out how to do this without having to do a road trip!!!

The moment you pulled up the duck tape i got flash backs to the time i tried to draft myself some stays with ductape. Looks like your experiment went better than mine haha
I have done it on my daughter and it worked well. You can't do it without assistance. And you have to prep all your duct tape ahead of time. Plus chose a cool day and have lots of water and ice available for the victim. Oh and don't pull on the duct tape, just lay it on the sacrificial tshirt gently.
I've got some modern soft bras that are very similar shape. I would probably take a pattern off those and add a skirt.
The "Sprang" weaving wouldn't only make it sheer, but also elastic, since sprang creates a hamrock like net. very interesting!
This was so fascinating to watch! Your drafting talent and sewing resourcefulness (making a cord!!) leaves me in awe. And it’s just so very medieval to make cord out of what you have lying around.
Go saran wrap and leftover packing tape! I used this method to draft my wonder woman tutu bodice and it worked really well.
That said, I wish I had your video then because though I drew my style lines on it, it never occurred to me that I could cut it apart to make pattern pieces. Instead I pinned fabric into the seam lines and used those. Your method would probably have been easier :)

I think it’s fascinating that there are so many examples in art, and even an extant one of a garment I had no idea existed until this video started. The multitudes of information I will never know haunts me now.
That‘s a beautiful garment, and quite modern too in its fit and construction. It makes me wonder why this didn‘t become a regular undergarment of the middle ages.
