- How To FAIL at Upgrading a Motherboard Without Reloading Windows
In this video I will show you how to fail at upgrading a motherboard, CPU, and Memory without reloading Windows 10. In reality the upgrade worked great, just as expected. However there was a major problem that actually did require the computer to be reloaded. Watch the video to find out what it was.

Would you recommend removing the old drivers first? I’ve heard switching from intel to amd I should remove all drivers
Hi, I just stumbled over your vid. I upgraded my CPU and Mobo about a week and a half ago and since then I'm getting random crashes. I was an idiot and just put in the new mobo and started it up without a clean install. you think that might be the problem?
I never have and haven't had an issue. You can though if you want. I would do it after the fact though.
It depends. I had something similar happen a while ago and it turned out being memory settings in the bios. After turning XMP on the crashing stopped. That doesn't mean that's the same problem you're having but you have to determine why your computer is crashing before you jump to conclusions.
so you are telling me i don't have to manually uninstall all my drivers and run sysprep etc to migrate my disks to my new pc? ( btw also changing over from intel to amd if that makes a difference, graphics card will stay the same)
Great video, thanks. Your camera angle when removing the motherboard is perfect!
just the information I need, been looking for this everywhere. thank you.
I also did this last year. I changed my motherboard only, but same cpu. I encountered no issues. I also tried copying the entire hard drive onto another (including windows). It booted just fine, maybe you can try that too.
So glad to see that windows 10 works with a different motherboard. thank you for the video.
this will save me time to reinstall for my new computer, (CPU or motherboard not working anymore. upgrade to new system)
This is great! I have been out of the game for a while and but now that is time to upgrade my old rig this is perfect!! will give a go but first doing a full backup just in case!!

Sir, great video. I am a little bit afraid though, I upgraded my system (motherboard, cpu cooler, tower, psu, ram) and I want to move my ssd( i have windows 10 in my ssd) and hdd to my upgraded system, should I do something before plug it in or shove it just the way it is?

I have a question. Will replacing my dead motherboard require me to reinstall windows? Would I need a boot drive? and if so how can I get around this.
Very interesting! so would I be alright upgrading from a Windows 11 OS on my M.2 currently installed on a z370 motherboard and 9700k processor to a brand new z790 motherboard and the new 14700k later on this fall!?

You can download the Windows media creator for free from Microsoft and create yourself a bootable USB drive for Windows 10. But yeah it should work. Every system I've tried it on has worked out. As always I would recommend backing up first just in case.
I moved an SSD/windows 10/64 to a brand new build. Booted right up. Didn’t even have to reactivate the oem version although I did link it to my MS account.
Weird though in device manager it shows the SSD is not connected even though it clearly is.
I'm planning on getting a new motherboard but with the same CPU. should I back my stuff up and if I should would it have to be an external drive or could I just back it up on an internal drive that isn't full
I always recommend backing up. You never know what could happen. An external drive is best but an internal one works to as long as it's not the drive windows is loaded on.
Where can you find all the inactive drivers afterwards to delete them?
Open (cmd) as administrator and run this command.
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
Then open device manager and click on view in the menu and select "Show inactive devices".
All your old drivers will be faded out in the list.
I'm upgrading my mobo this weekend, that's assuming Fedex is on time. Switching to a Aorus Z390 Ultra, this information saves me a bunch, thank you.
did you have to reinstall windows?
@@berkan7662 No, I removed all mobo related software before I took it apart. I updated the bios before boot and windows automatically detected the new hardware, I had zero issues.
@@draxuss4205 is the bios update required?
@@berkan7662 Not required but is something that should be done at some point.

Did you have to remove the old motherboard drivers. I’m swapping from an ASUS Z490 e-gaming to a Z590 Airbus Elite ax and I wanted to know if I had to remove the z490’s drivers before the swap?
I haven't before and have only had a couple of issues with hundreds of computers I've done this to.
So you think it would be ok if I just move all the components into the new motherboard then download the new motherboard drivers.
@@goodfornone yep, that's typically how it works.
Thank you so much. Just got everything working.🙏🏾
I was in a rush because of poor planning and my system won’t boot windows. I went from intel to AMD and I can’t seem to get a detection. What should I do?
Configure your SATA controller in the BIOS the same as the old one. Alternatively you can force restart 3 times to bring up the recovery menu. From there boot into safe mode. Once it boots restart and see if it detects new drivers.
So I’m upgrading from a i5-6600k with a z170 -a motherboard to a i7 10700k with a z490 -e motherboard would this be the same in my circumstances?
Should work fine.
Great video! My Win10 64bit X470 PC quit suddenly with No Video out from the graphics card and onboard graphics, no POST beeps.. yet it looked like it was trying to boot since I had normal Drive LED activity and Good PSupply voltages, so I got a new replacement MB and swapped my CPU, DDR4, Fans, and M2 C: drive etc into it last night and am about to try booting it up.. Sadly I noticed the Ryzen 7 MB I got is an Asus x570 but the X470 I’m replacing is actually an MSI x470.. so all the drivers will be different. I do have the product Keys and would like to ask .. do you think Win10 will boot up to a point it’ll let me install the proper new MB drivers from the CD ROM that came with the new MB? I’m hoping the Original M2 drive with my Win10 on it can boot .. should It?
An update as of 1 Oct 09:00 am..
well I couldn’t wait for your reply and went ahead and tried booting up anyway.. and there was NO change in symptoms at all.. still see normal front panel LED HD Drive activity but zero video signal.. tried swapping from DisplayPort to HDMI with a different cable.. still see “no signal”, I have no SVGA port so I can’t try VGA, the new MB still has no POST beeps , but does have LEDs and the Dram and CPU LEDs cycle off but it hangs on the WHT VGA fail LED ON.. I’m thinking possibly a bad Corsair TX850/Power Supply.. even tho at the connector ends I read a good +12 and 5.2 VDC I think I have to swap it next or my monitor one.. then swap everything on the New MB back .. What say ?
Have you tried swapping the video card?
CyberCPU Tech yes, I did that 1st and both internal mb and Hi end GPU graphics card Fail . So I’m assuming it’s either my monitor or the Power supply and I just bought both to find out which it is then will swap the new MB out and hope it all ends well..
Well it’s not the monitor.. a replacement HDMI monitor does the same thing.. no signal..
I’m swapping the PS out next..
You should have more than one stick of RAM. Pull all but one and try to post it that way. If that doesn't work then switch out the one module with another one and try again.
CyberCPU Tech Swapping in a new PS did not fixit but I can hear the POST beeps now As: one long and 3 short means the same thing as the constant WHT Post LED: “no VGA detected” .. not sure why it’s saying this since I have no VGA video out connector on the MB.. I can start removing and swapping the 4ea DDR4 sticks but think I should put the original mb and all the rest back in place since it does not appear to be a MB, Power Supply, Video card, monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cable issue.. all have been swapped ..
Why is it telling me no VGA detected when there is no VGA on this Motherboard? I only have HDMI and DisplayPort..and why is it not failing the memory POST if it might be a memory card failure?
The first think I would try is the memory.
How would you install the drivers if you don’t have a disk slot?
In that case I would download them from the manufacturers website.
Really good stuff. Would it work if I changed the mobo and cpu?
Yes. I've even had good luck switching platforms. Like Intel to AMD.
CyberCPU Tech Wow, that’s encouraging..
🖐 what do I do with the old drivers from the old motherboard ? I just committed to a mother board , cpu upgrade🙁 I’m scared
I just leave them. I've never had an issue with it.

You are the only person to upload such a detailed video. THANK YOU SO MUCH FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.
If I am correct you don't have to upgrade your motherboard just because your old motherboard doesn't support PCI Express 4.0. Graphics cards can run on older PCI Express versions with just a little performance penalty.
@@Whitecat372 You're right. You don't have to.
@@Whitecat372you don’t have too, but in some cases you miss a lot of performance by using a 4.0 card in a 3.0 system. Also I have heard that lots of amd cards tend to preform better in compatible slots.

hi, i bought a second hand cpu motherboard and now i need to shift my gpu and hard drive and ssd to it. i have been holding it for 2 months worrying that if i shift i might have no computers for days. do i need to prepare something beside backing up my files on my old computer? ( both is 64 bits)
It's always a good idea to back up because nothing is for sure. There's all kinds of issues that could happen in the process that you might have to work through. However, I have had very few instances where this didn't work.
But as you can see in the video I have had situations where this upgrade failed. Recently I had one that was very difficult because the new motherboard did not support MBR boot and the old system was MBR. So I had to convert the partition to GPT prior to moving it to the new system. I have a video coming out on Monday that shows exactly how to do it.
I have done this with hundreds of computers at this point and can count on one hand the amount of systems that failed. Even when I've had problems in the past in a lot of cases I was ultimately able to get it to work but most of the time it just works.

Nothing I can think of off hand. You could check the boot order or let the boot fail three times so you can get the startup repair menu and from there try to boot into safe mode.
when I go from my lga 1151 and i7 9700k to an lga 1200 and 10900k will I just have to put in the new board, put everything in and it will work or will I have to do any additional steps

It should work fine. Just hook it all up and Boot It up and let it detect all the new drivers. Make sure you back up first just in case.
Some people say that you have to uninstall all intel-based drivers, or it won't boot. I plan on using my current OS drive in an AMD Ryzen 5000 series 8 core system from an Intel 7th gen i5. But put into an entirely new computer albeit with the same GPU. Everything I have seen tells to uninstall the intel drivers or you'll be hunting for solution to problems for weeks. I had no issues going from an older duo core from like 2010 to the 7-gen intel in 2017 except windows 10 didn't activate because for some reason it wouldn't for reasons, I fixed but cannot tell how I did it or why it did this, but it wouldn't upgrade to newer builds of Windows 10. So, I couldn't do the activation wizard where its first question is. did you change hardware? All you have to answer is yes and it activates. This should work in 2022. I have a 64bit OS so I shouldn't have the problem you had. Does having a TPM active and secure boot on effect the ability for the OS to operate on the different hardware?
If i do this will it wipe my harddrives, when i install the new mobo?
No. The whole point is to replace your board without having to wipe your drive.
As always I would back up your data before trying though. I've had great luck doing this but I still recommend backing up first.
Like I always say, making mistakes is the best way to learn. Atleast you didn't fry an expensive component lol
I'm still wondering, I am changing my motherboard, cpu and ram, and i dont know if i would have to reinstall/repurchase windows 10?
You may possibly have to purchase a new license. However, you shouldn't have to reinstall.

@@Benodryll Did y'all ever figure this out?
Im actually doing the same in a few days to my pc. I believe since windows 10 automatically gets detected on hdd/ssd, if it doesnt boot straight to windows, then in your bios there should be a boot option that’ll allow you to select the drive that its on.
If I get a new mother board and use a different hard drive will it boot correctly
As long as you image the old drive to the new one, it should. You will likely have to reactivate Windows. But it should work fine.

Curious if after i've backed everything up to my HDD, if i can just boot everything up on my SATA SSD (my boot priority right now) and be good to go?
I'm on Windows 10, and have my windows access activated with a digital license LINKED to my Microsoft account.
Should be able to boot it up, and log into my Microsoft Account/Onedrive correct?
(From the comments it seems JUST that easy. But before leaving the BIOS after first bootup, is there anything somebody recommends?)
Would you recommend downloading the following to a flashdrive to install IN THE BIOS LATER, before adding in my new hardware?:
MOBO:
-Latest BIOS Version
-LAN/Audio/VGA/Utilities/SATA Driver
-Chipset Driver
Appreciate any and all help. First time switching to AMD chipsets!
It should work well. Just make sure the sata controller is set the same in the BIOS. If your old motherboard is ACPI make sure the new one is to. Just make sure that's the same and it should work. If it's not set to ACPI then it is possible to change it but I would worry about that after you get Windows 10 booted on the new hardware and all the new devices detected.
To switch the SATA controller to ACPI go into recovery in settings and set the computer to boot into safe mode. Then while it's rebooting switch the SATA controller to ACPI and then let the system boot into safe mode. You don't have to do anything in safe mode just let it boot. Then restart the system and it should boot into regular mode with ACPI. If it doesn't work you can always switch it back to whatever it was and try again.

yeah, Think I might just do a fresh windows install after thinking it all over.
It’s not like I do too much on the PC anyways besides gaming and a few files that are work-related. Just backed everything up and did a system image.
So I’ll just go through the boot drive method with Windows 10, then when it asks where to install Windows, I’ll simply click my SSD (but hit the delete everything button on there through the windows installation process).
Unless you recommend probably just deleting everything through (reset this PC), before the parts arrive? Curious if I should wipe it before the fresh windows install, or just hit delete files through the windows installer process.
Thanks for the response!!!

@@CyberCPU then Amazon put out bad info on the product page , lol.
I wouldn't doubt it. 😂😂
What could be the problem, replaced the motherboard and cpu i5 6500 to an i7 10700kf with a z490. Rgb is on fan spinning , keyboard responds to caps lock, but I have no display, and windows is not booting up.
Yes my display cable is in my gpu.
It's hard to say. Sounds like it's not posting. Did you bench test the system outside of the case before you built it?
@@CyberCPU I did, reseated the ram and everything. There was this one time where I thought I fixed it.
I could get inside the bios and I installed windows from an old cd installer on the same ssd as I had and it worked, when I was done installing and updating drivers, shut it down, next day I can't even boot to windows.
That's bizarre. I would start will pulling ram and trying to post it with only 1 stick.
I recently had a new system I built for a customer that wouldn't post out of the box. However it would post with one stick of RAM instead of two. I assumed it was a bad stick of memory in the dual channel kit. However I took a really close look at the bad module and saw that somehow there was a film or maybe even corrosion on the contact points. Bought it brand new from Newegg but maybe it been sitting on the shelf for a while. I cleaned the contact points really well installed the RAM and it worked perfect.
Hypothetically, if I was to upgrade to a new mobo, new RAM and swap from an AMD CPU to an intel..could I still do this method?
Yes, I do it all the time. I've only had a fail a few times.
Great! I'll definitely try it then. Thanks for the fast reply.
Planning to follow this guide, just waiting for my ryzen 5 2600 and tuf b450m board, hopefully it will work fine :)
Ps: my os is just crack version not quite sure if i will encounter any issue with that
Old unit
Ryzen 3 2200g
K4 B350 asrock
Os win 10
I did this exactly with the specs as urs. I transitioned from intel g4560 to a ryzen 5 2600 with asus tuf b450m and it fucking worked lol. I did it by accident because i forgot to press f8 during boot up lol and i was surprised that it continues to the login screen and a few minutes it prompts me to restart to install updates and boom its all good and stuff
@@ghernickersonnazaire8656 did you use crack version of windows?
@@ghernickersonnazaire8656 did you have to install the motherboard drivers?
@@mightyt-rex5634 nope not at all
Did you run into any issues? I'm planning to to upgrade my a320m to a b450. But I will just use the same ryzen 3 3200g.
Wouldn’t remnants of old drivers from the previous motherboard remain on the computer and interfere with the new drivers and motherboard? I’m interested in performing a similar procedure and I’d like to get my facts straight before I go through with it.
That could be a concern but I have done this many times and never had an issue with it. If you wanted to you could unhide unused drivers and uninstall them. However, it's never been an issue for me.
Question is .... is the motherboard same type same brand or different in this video?
Same brand but much different chipset and processor..
I want to try to change my motherboard but my OS is only windows 7 because my motherboard is not windows 10 ready. I'm currently using asus a58-k and I want to upgrade to A88-plus without reformatting my pc but I am afraid I might fail that my current os won't detect or wont upgrade the driver. can you help me please? or any advice. I don't have OS installer of bootable flash drive, '(
I typically upgrade to Windows 10 first before upgrading the hardware.
@@CyberCPU Thank you! I will do it and update you after the process. Thank you again.!
I recommend backing up first just to be safe. Let me know how it works out.
i want to get an new motherboard and CPU.but i am still not sure if i have to reinstall windows 10 pro.
It should be fine. I always recommend backing up first just in case but I have done it many times with great success.
@@CyberCPU ok thanks
Question now is does windows 11 work the same way
Wow just wow
Okay so what I understand is..
I have a gigabyte b450 mobo with a 3700X
I just picked up a sealed gigabyte x570 and I can just drop my CPU and Operating M.2 SSD and it's gonna work with having to go in and set stuff up ?
My current B450 is running windows 10 64bit
Yeap, it should work fine. I always recommend backing up first just in case but I have had a lot of success doing this in the past. It's only failed a few times.
@@CyberCPU thanks for the quick reply!
Cool I'm about to start swapping stuff.
Last question tho. Would I get the driver's from gigabytes website ? I don't have a CD drive lol
Yes, I would download them from the manufacturer. The CD typically has outdated drivers on it. Windows 10 should detect most of the important drivers. Might be a good idea to DDU your GPU but other then that it should go pretty smooth.
@@CyberCPU thanks thanks
Working on it
Let me know how it works out.
but do i need to format my system ?
Nope.
@@CyberCPU thx man
32 bit whats that , lol bet you died inside , nice vid by the way , will definately keep an eye on your channel..
The sad part was that I knew this system was 32 bit but completely forgot when I decided to use this system as the example for the video. 🤷♂️
I did the exact same thing and windows didn't boot, and even with a clean install it says The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Idk what to do
Sounds like you have another problem. I would start with a memory test with memtest86.
@@CyberCPU i can't do it either, i have a Ddr3 old pc and I'm trying to upgrade to DDR4 (ryzen 3500x)
I would test the memory in the new system to make sure you didn't get a bad stick of ram.
I recently had a system that did something very similar and it turned out it wouldn't properly boot Windows without the XMP profile turned on. Sometimes it's something simple but you need to start somewhere to narrow it down.
If you run Memtest86 on the new hardware and it fails you can concentrate your energy and troubleshooting on the memory but if it passes then you can move on to something else.
Props to the Dale flag
What if switching from Intel to Ryzen? 🤔
It should be ok. I suggest backing up your data before doing it but it should work ok.
And how it went?
How did it go???
This was posted 2 years ago? why do I feel like this is a 7 years ago upload CD-ROM drive? what the heck?
Just to clarify, if I switch motherboard, cpu, gpu, and ram, this will work? Just making sure before I screw something up lol
It should. I always recommend backing up first just in case but I have had really good luck doing this.
if this works?
