Repairing Dawnell: Sawing out a new keel for a classic wooden sloop, EP2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 вер 2022
- Lou Sauzedde and I have decided not to use the big shipsaw to cut the keel for Dawnell. Instead, we'll be using Lou's custom made 10" circular saw. This will save us from having to handle a 1,500Lb white oak slab. We can cut it right where it sits, next to the boat on three saw horses. It will take multiple passes and generate a lot of dust. But the accuracy is high and we can do it outside.
You may notice that in this video there's a bit more work and a little less talking. So put on your dust mask and your ear protection and have a look. Make sure to leave us a comment to let us know what you think.

Where's Lou? Haven't seen any videos in a few months. Hope you are doing well Lou!!
Lou uses a circular saw with the same precision that a surgeon has with his scalpel. Amazing.
You two are a complete team when you work together. That is some piece of wood. Thank you for sharing this repair video.
Thanks for letting us hang out with you guys, it's a relief for what's going on in the World. Cheers
My arms are tired from watching this video! More, please...
Two videos from Lou in one day - excellent :)
Lou you really know how to get the best keel out of that timber!
I have learned a lot from him even being a 40 year machinist by trade. I dig cutting wood.
That's high praise indeed when it comes from an experienced machinist. Thanks.
Lou is clearly a master of his craft.
Respect.
I like the explanation of what comes next in the process.
This is seriously your bag - when you are working with old classics you are at your very best - competent, confident and knowledgeable. New boats are fine but restoring old or older boats takes you to very high place. Good luck Lou.
Thanks Peter. There's no one better than Lou for giving new life to old boats. The sad part is that there are so few of them around now.
Thanks I thoroughly enjoy watching how you use your incredible skills and knowledge. Joe
Lou’s the cut guy! There’s a job site hierarchy!
That is one amazing piece of wood!
Looks like you had a pretty warm day for all that physical activity!
You got that right. Looking forward to fall.
Clearly a Master Shipwright!
Great job guys. Only comment though I didn’t feel it was necessary to show so much sawing. But otherwise congratulations on an incredible job.
Louis? Good to see you again.
Appreciate the great vid, thx guys!👍🤗
That's a nice looking boat!
Great work like it a lot !
Lou loves to say "Medullary Rays"!
Saw wot you did there Louis🎯❤️
Good grief, How many wildly modified Milwaukee circsaws does Lou have?!?!
I wish I were 30 years younger I would fight to be an apprentice
❤️
Thanks
She looks nice
When are going to see the rest of this finished? Need to do the same thing to my boat.
I was so looking forward to the schooner build , wat happen?
Lou, not only did I enjoy your video but to my amazement noticed that she has a port shaft, strut just liked my Dad and Mom's 31 footer John Alden yawl called Symphonie!!!!
⛵️⛵️❤️
I read this and had to wonder if your mom or dad ever figured out how to get her to back to port. I think with John Alden sailing always came first. Thanks for watching!
Hi please give us some informations about Lou!!!🙏🏽is he okay??
What happened to Evelyn, Bristol Shipwrights, Tips from a Shipwright & where is Lou?
Any videos more recent than this?
where are u?
Maybe move the horses a little bit farther away from those poppets so you don't have to climb over them?
Great job Lou!
We hear you Jim. Unfortunately, there's not much room to even get a truck in the parking lot. We need to get to work and finish up some projects.
@@BristolShipwrights Looked a little awkward and dangerous with Lou focused on making a curved cut in 4" stock w/ 10" blade wide open.
I get it... I'm often guilty as well, and my first thought was you guys were just trying to catch some shade.
It's done before any of us saw the video and hopefully Dawnell will be back together and afloat as she should be soon enough.
I appreciate that you take the time to make these videos and share a bit of what really goes on in a boatyard. 👍
Is that’s Chris Craft behind you?
Did something happen to Lou?
What happened to Lou? Can somebody there update subscribers?
Damn Lou, don’t you ever wear a dust mask?! We want you around for a bit longer!
WHAT HAPPEN. WHERES THE VIDEO'S ????????????
Hard wood dust is toxic please protect yourself and wear a mask I really enjoy these videos and love what you are sharing.
Good to see your extending your life by protecting your lungs.......
