The beauty of the strip plank is the ultimate craftsmanship. Thanks to all now and before wooden boats are special. 35 years serving as Captain of Motor yachts the fondess relationship was with a small wooden charter boat built with white cedar .

Being a marine fiberglass worker in California I feel like a second rate citizen. Your video has given me some hope the American craftsman is still alive and well. The Lewis are an inspiration. Thank you for the video.

Very nice! There is a similar family operation just outside of Mobile, AL, called Stauter Boats. It was started as a family owned operation back in the 1950’s and I believe is still in business to this day. I believe they originally built boats for the local fishing and oyster trade, although pleasure craft were built as well. My father owned a little mid-50’s sixteen foot runabout, which he eventually sold in the early ‘70’s. I wish I had that one back.

In a used bookstore in Upstate NY, I came upon a book, Small Craft Advisory, by Louis Rubin, Jr. In it, he commissions a 24-foot custom wood boat made in the Harkers Island style by Clem Willis, and later speaks with admiration of the man who taught him, Brady Lewis. He recounts that he built 2 virtually identical boats, and they were so incredibly balanced that they performed identically. While he was on one of the boats in an informal race, he took a bucket of water and placed it in a very particular place that, as architect and builder, he knew would make a winning difference. His boat slowly pulled away and won the race, based on the uncanny knowledge of weight placement and hull form by this boatbuilding craftsman. Amazing, and very amazing boats!

I grew up with wood boats. Fiber Glass makes a lot of sense and some manufacturers, like Boston Whaler (many others too) know how to do it, but WOOD has a natural feeling that goes to my heart.
