  • In this Episode we take a short trip to check out the ongoing restoration of the 1962 Beals Brothers lobster boat The Blue Dolphin. This classic 45 foot wooden boat has lived in Newport, RI her entire life and is now getting a full overhaul, including plastic framing, a new keel, new planks and much more to get her back on the waters of Narraganset Bay. Follow Lou and co-owner Ian as they take us through some of the work done so far as well as show us some of what lies ahead.

It is good to see people getting rid of butt blocks like that. I took a lot of flack about scarfing in planks to remove butt blocks when I did that on the 1936 woody I restored starting back in 2007.

I remember the Blue Dolphin in the 60's when I was a young kid hanging out on Bailey's beach
, ledge Rd and spouting rock. Mr. Cushing ran her hard hauling lobsta pots in any weather or water condition
    S. But done like a pro dancing around the ledges. It was a beautiful boat, as Louis says..a gentlemans lobsta yacht.
He kept her moored at green bridge cove on the drive. The Blue Dolphin was synonymous with Newport...a blending of wealth and blue collar work. It was a pleasant surprise to find this video. Thank you!

Don't know where Lou has been but I'm so, soo glad to click on my notifications and see a video from Tip's from a Shipwright. Lou is my absolute favorite. No one makes better videos. Every single piece of material is examined and explained, as is every aspect of it's installation in the greatest detail. What it's for and how it preforms, in a manner that's down to earth and plainly understandable for the common man like myself. Welcome back Lou, you were greatly missed. By myself anyway.

Ex-boatbuilder from MA, but practised elsewhere. Yes, love those wooden working boats: lobster, Cape Cod Cats, sloops, etc. Years after trading the financial heartache of wooden boat building and maintenance for computer programing I got to build my dream house with an architect. My primary guidance to him? I want a lobster boat, not a yacht.
Great to see you again! There's no one on YT who has half the knowledge and experience that you have. Your explanation of your solutions for frames and planks is so creative and sound it's a delight to hear.
I seem to recall that that Lobster boats were held together with iron nails, that limited their life spans. Maybe those were just the Down East boats? Well, you had to keep the builders employed or you wouldn't have any.

Cool stuff! This strikes me because I'm also restoring a 1962 wooden boat. Of course, mine is a sailboat, but all the principles are the same. I'll be doing the same thing to get rid of the butt ends on the planks. Using plastic for frames is certainly compelling, but I don't know if I can bring myself to do it. It just seems wrong on almost a spiritual level to use synthetic material in the construction of a wooden hull. Maybe I'll come around on it. We'll see.

Is the a schedule for scarfing as there is for but blocks. Like the LLoyds separation by 5 system (2 over +3 down etc) ? I am rebuilding a sharpie ketch that used to be up in Point Judith. One of Jenny’s problems is the but blocks are too close making mid ships weak.
