  • An Irish soldier serving on a UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has been killed and another critically injured, after the convoy they were travelling in was attacked.
Tributes have been paid to Private Seán Rooney and to his injured colleague, Private Shane Kearney.
Pvt Rooney is the first Irish soldier to die on a UNIFIL mission in more than 20 years.
A senior Hezbollah official expressed his condolences, but said the incident took place solely between the town’s residents and UNIFIL and did not involve Hezbollah.
