Great reaction. He had a great voice. But he's under appreciated in his contributions to the area of arranging, phrasing and timing. He pretty much changed the way singers performed.
glen kelley that was more Bing Crosby, as he more changed the way of singing compared Sinatra, Sinatra just built onto Bing’s style. Frank was told to copy or at least to look at Crosby’s phrasing and timing.
If anything his phrasing is the most praised, there are people who actually think his voice was bad.
Bing Crosby was the voice that carried more influence but Sinatra took crooning to another level with his "swing" phrasing, breath control, and lyric delivery. He also had a cocky, mobster persona which comes across in this video.
@@kentuckyfriedchildren5385 lol...name one person who had any authority in the music field who that Sinatra had a bad voice.....this is stupid beyond compare
jeez you people are dumb....Sinatra is not underappreciated in any of those areas....they are always brought up in any discussion of his singing
His phrasing was amazing.
Everything he did was amazing.
The band backing him up that night is the great Count Basie Orchestra, and the man in this clip conducting the orchestra is a legend himself: Quincy Jones.
Frank and Dean are more than legends
Frank always had the most fun when he had a big band behind him!
Yes, especially the one behind him here; the Count Basie orchestra, Frank's best music was with Basie.
I just love how he plays with the tempo as well, sometimes ahead of the beat sometimes behind.
In 1998, I was in a college Jazz band as a trumpet player (which was fun enough on its own, of course), and I was lucky enough to be selected to sing the vocals for this song. I'm not a vocalist by any means, but I received some excellent coaching from someone very much like Miss Roars. That made all the difference.
Im a major metalhead and have been for 30 years. When I discuss my favorite bands, guitarists, singers and such, it is funny to see peoples expressions when I name names like Dio, Halford, Sebastian Bach and other singers and then mention that Sinatra is my favorite singer. It gets a great response....
Same here! I'm primarily a rock/metal fan, however, I love people's faces when I tell them that I like to listen to classical music (thanks mostly to Andre Rieu), but also singers like Sinatra, Elvis (thanks to my mom who loves him), Andy Williams or Dean Martin. On the other hand, I'm 27 and it's quite sad that most people my age do not even know who any of these people are, maybe with the exception of Elvis, who's hard to miss in the modern popculture.
I adored your voice when you sang a couple of lines of that 😍
we need a cover from her
otocatocoto true
You have good taste Beth. Frank is amazing
Truly one of the greats! RIP Frank.
Your joy watching this is infectious. Plus I've always thought Frank was underrated. He knew exactly what he was doing with breath and vocal technique and phrasing.
Thanks for your great analysis and reaction. Frank and Dean are some of my favorites.
True, the joy and excitement of the performance is there. But actually Sinatra excelled from other crooners by using his voice and words as another instrument. What set him apart was his timing. Watch any of his serious performances. Unlike others even those with great voices, Sinatra is constantly aware of the orchestra and the music in terms of his place and involvement.
Please do Dean Martin! Either everybody loves somebody, or Volari!
Dean is so much more enjoyable than Frank.
Mombo italiano
It's Volare, the infinitive 'to fly'.
Return To Me is wonderful by Dean. Perry Como and Dean did a wonderful duet of the song.
Dean for the win
Love him. Got to see him live when I was 19 in London, with my mam, who introduced me to him. He was getting on a bit, but still amazing. All the things that made him Frank Sinatra were still there. One of the best nights of my life & something I’ll never forget. I got to see Frank Sinatra 😍
Frank was and is the best! What a performer!
The greatest singer of all time!!!! I saw him in concert and he did not disappoint!!!
You are so lucky
A master communicator. In order to be one you have to also be a master of relaxation (which takes a world of confidence), the ability to interpret and personalize a lyric, and then make it personal to the audience. In those days diction and word clarity was paramount. But as I've said before on other sites, Frank was always the coolest guy in the room. Nat King Cole had these very same abilities as well (with a prettier timber in my opinion,) but Nat's personality was avuncular. Nevertheless, it always felt as if each were singing directly to you. This performance has to be with Count Basie and his orchestra. A time long and forever gone.
'Ol Blue Eyes.. 🥰
Damn.....
Frank.....🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Frank is so awesome saw him live I never ever have seen anyone so in control relaxed and just plain cool a legend for sure!
greatest live album ever made , sinatra and count basie at the sands.
Seconded. That's my most played album. Basie's band was so good and Frank knew what he had. It was perfect.
The age of the crooners, great stuff.
love your reaction!!!
🤗 nice, thank you 😘
It sounds so easy and simple, when he is singing.
But i love and feel his Voice so much. 😉
Should definitely follow this up with Dean Martin. Either thats amore, volare, or on an evening in roma. Brilliant singer, warm voice.
The man was amazing!
That was fun! Thanks!
Honestly I think the thing that really makes me love your videos SO MUCH is your beautiful accent and the way you pronounce your words. So preside with every vowel and consonant. Your lip and jaw control is admirable to say the absolute least.
I love seeing the young coming home to real music. Frank sang with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra from 1939. Dorsey played trombone and it was keeping time with that slide instrument which gave Sinatra the phrasing he would become famous for.
Love Frank! His Christmas music is amazing!

Look at the time he spent touring with the Dorsey Band, HAD to look after his voice! Terrific stuff!
Love Frank a true LEGEND!!!
I hear Frank - I think of my Grandad. He loved him 😊
That was awesome, thank you girl..
Sinatra the Time Lord, his swing was just craaazy
Frank was a teen idol back in the day, and the teenage girls (including my mom!) would scream at his shows, just like they later did with the Beatles!
I saw Frank years ago, maybe early 80's, in a massive arenas as we were up almost in the rafters. Frank came out and took the place over, I've been in the music industry a good deal of my life and never ever have been so captivated by one man ... His presence, charisma and even at his advanced years, strength and quality of voice was astounding ...it was a highlight of my life, absolutely blessed to see him..
Loved it! More jazz and crooners, if you will.
Sinatra is Very good. Beth is Very good. Hug from Brazil.
Anita 'o Day Newport jazz festival is an oldie but a goodie. Great close ups of mouth shapes and footage of the fashion of the times
This is my favourite Frank song so cheers for that
Crooners get ignored. Thanks! You are the best!!! Smooth is as smooth does..
Omg love this!
what an amazing entertainer! smooth, rich voice and everything to go with it. The Best male singer of all time? - no doubt! Every live performance that I have seen he is always having fun, with the song and with backing band (they always travelled with him) and the audience. Talk about "COOL Charisma" - this is it in-person. Not enough can be said about Ole Blue Eyes.
Lovely change, Beth. Hope you do more.
Thank goodness you’re playing the greats!
You can mention the arrangement for the orchestra done by Quincy Jones!
I love this.
Great song. I rembember playing it in high school with my jazz band.
Yay! I've been waiting forever for a Frank Sinatra reaction! I'd love to see you do his song "The Impossible Dream"
His phrasing is unmatched.
Frank was the man.
Nice Job Beth. Great Classic :-)
Sinatra regards "Only The Lonely" on Capitol, (1958) (and I heartily concur) as his greatest album. You, your viewers, anyone who appreciates jazz, blues, and ballads need to hear that album, especially "One For My Baby" and "Blues In The Night." Do a serious critique on that material. Heartbreaking. There'll never be another.
I love your videos!! You are the real deal!. Ever thought of analyzing Michael Crawford's vocals?
Hello Beth, please do:
Avantasia - The Scarecrow (Live Flying Opera)
Scorpions - Still Loving you /Love of my Life (Live from the Acustic album)
In Flames - Take this life / Stay with Me
Dimmu Borgir - Gateways (Live)
Jazz is the core of it. He used his voice like a saxophone or trumpet, improvisationally.

A very nice, honest review Ms Roars on one of the best popular singers of all time. Sinatra didn't need to show off like many singers do today trying to outdo
each other with their loud high notes and other nonsense. Frank new he was good and so did his musical peers. If you are truly great at something you don't need to convince others that you are. I appreciate people like you who are both knowledgeable and fair with the great talents of yesterday.
Loved your reaction. I know this is about Frank, but you did mention the band as well. Not sure if you are aware, but the band is the great Count Basie orchestra. In my opinion, Sinatra's best recordings/performances were with Count Basie. You see, I knew Count Basie; in the 70s we lived next door to him and my parents were on the committee of Count Basie's, Wife's charity The Committee of 50. Anyway, I side track. There was a close similarity with the way that Sinatra phrased the song and the way Basie phrased the music; it was like they were made for each other.
Way past his creative prime (do one off his mid or late 1950s performances). He revolutionized music and took over ALL popular music. Everyone singer male or female was a Sinatra imitator for 20 years. He had (developed physically) outrageous breath control!!! Had to have perfect pitch because his arranger, the legendary Nelson Riddle, had band NEVER PLAY ANY OF THE MELODY and followed him (not he following band). First to make everyone believe he was SINGING JUST TO YOU. Not just perfect diction, but turned song's lyrics into a meaningful, emotional poem. Loved to live in the studio cutting LPs in the 50s, greatest ever made. By the mid-1960s smoking cost him his breath control gone, so he switched to SPEAK-SINGING for next 30 years.
RIP Frank Sinatra, we love you and miss!! We wish you were still here Chairman of Board, that band can swing hard. Excellent bassist!!
Beth you have an amazing voice, and extremely beautiful!!
He knows how to throw a song about .
My aunt who’s 95 said she’d watch frank Sinatra perform live in movie theaters even when there was almost no one in the theater lol. Apparently it was before he was famous.
the part in wich he sings "Fill my hearth with song" .... he turs his face towars the orchestra behind him, at first i thought he missed tempo but DONT! the man is a genious and entered conter tempo instead totally mastering the song!... i love frank because of my grandfather which died a year ago, we share the love for Jazz (even if im a metal head) and right now im fking crying
To me, Frank is the best singer ever. A big statement, I know. But, that's how much I love him. He had amazing breath control and could hold some loooong notes.
I absolutely love Mr. Blue Eyes. Ol’Frank is the best.
I was lucky to have seen Frank in concert.
Wow! Where and when. I am very jealous!
@@BethRoars My wife and I saw him at the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup, WA in 1993 with Shirley McClain as the opening act. We also saw Tony Bennett at the same venue a year or two after that.
If you're going the jazz vocals route, please do Joao Gilberto. Miles Davis said "he could read a newspaper and sound good."
Amazing phrasing.
Awesome.
The Best!!
Frank Sinatra IS THE VOICE!!!
awesome video
People forget how great Sinatra was. The groove,, that groove, man he played with the orchestra tempo, swinging around it as he please, always laid back but not dragging . That's why thill this day he is untouchable. There's no singer that can swing like him. That pocket, man was he good.
The best!!!
your voice is kickass
I really enjoyed this video! Very fun and informative. :-)
PS: I've been looking everywhere for a legit digital copy of that recording. Anyone know where I can buy it?
Great video - a better example of his talent would be to react to one of his ballads ( often dubbed his suicide albums ) from the early fifties, really amazing singing.
Great video. Not to forget how he sings with the Count Basie orchestra under the direction of the arranger Quincy Jones. This combination got the best out of Frank Sinatra's singing.
Excellent prosody from Frank.
I love Frank Sinatra too!
Super cool.....good job teacher
Thank you! 😃
Frank was the best. Period.
man oh gosh i love franks singing
Sinatra was fan of "Javier Solis", try this one Javier Solis El loco
I'd love to see you react to Christopher Lee singing "Name Your Poison." He's a charmer and hits some incredibly low notes
Listen to his vocal range on Old Man River...1963 Concert Sinatra. He had it when he wanted it..
New to your channel ... Wondering if you ever check out one of Frank best friend Dean Martin. He a more relax singer then Frank but was just as much love. Couple of his song is Amore and also the song he knock the beetles out of number 1 spot in 1964... everyone loves somebody.
He was known as king of cool given him that title by Elvis Presley
the best of the best..!
The Conductor: Quincy Jones..who wrote the arrangement of this classic!!
Straight pimpin
Beth if you haven't ever checked out the band This Wild Life, you should. Two AMAZING vocal talents and very very good music. They have a lot of live versions on their UA-cam. Concrete, Roots and Branches, History, etc. AMAZING SONGS. Keep up the amazing vids. Cheers!
Great! Beth can you please do an ABBA song? Would love you to do SOS, The winner takes it all or The Day before you came (all Agnetha songs). There are not a lot real live versions on YT though.
You like classic songs nice you will see the different now and before
I love this song :) Frank is amazing. You should also listen and react to JJ Grey and Mofro
Always loved the way Sinatra would "nonchalant" his way through songs, and like a jazz musician, go ahead of and fall behind the beat. Because of his phrasing, the listener never knew where he would accent parts of words or phrases. His stage presence had a level of confidence almost bordering on cockiness that made him all the more enjoyable to listen to and watch.
