Italian here: when I was a kid, Michael Jordan was the only name in basketball we knew and all the boys wanted to be him when we had PE classes inside (outside everyone was playing football /soccer) No one reached the basket but everyone mimicked the 'dunk' under the basket... with an imaginary one 😂
So yes, big names that are focused on their craft, have good manners with fans and medias and don't waste time to talk the talk but straight walk the walk... have a global reach and can do wanders for themselves, the sport, the people who can have good inspirational models to grow up with.

To me It's like Barkley said in the 80s "I'm not a role model" I've never looked at athletes as a role model but liked and cheered for many. I will say this. Clark presents herself as a professional also in the press conferences and media sound bites she is saying all the right things not playing into the games media can play with questions. This definitely makes her likeable easy to cheer for and from a business standpoint marketable

I agree. No one is paying big dollars in the NBA to watch Andre Drummond get 20 rebounds. They're paying the big bucks to see Steph Curry making insane long shots or Anthony Edwards ankle breaking drives. Most people watch sports to root for their team or their star. The women of the W are hating on CC because she has a bigger fan base before playing a single game.

Nobody comes to see someone grab rebounds. The WNBA talks about new fans. Ok so please tell me where the phrase “bandwagon riders” came from? The NBA, NFL, NCAA, and any other male sport embraces them. People just need to stop lying to themselves. Caitlin Clark is the reason the WNBA is where they are at. I’m sorry but I don’t agree with Gil because if you take Caitlin Clark out of this equation, Angel Reese isn’t relevant. Angel Reese gained national attention for what? Doing the “you can’t see me” gesture. It wasn’t because she did the gesture, it is because WHO SHE DID IT TO? CC

@@CatinthehatG And your comments is why many in women’s sports aren’t looked at past their looks. Because it isn’t about the sport or talent. Olivia Dunne is one, if not thee top woman’s NIL earners in college. Yet, she isn’t even the best on her team, let alone in all of college gymnastics. Why? Her looks. So Instagram followers and NIL money is irrelevant when it comes to being great at a sport. That’s like saying onlyfans models are great actresses because of their followers and what some make. This argument makes Caitlin even more profound because she tries to duck social media. Also we don’t know Caitlin because of social media we know her because she is a great ball player. When have you seen an Angel Reese basketball highlight that didn’t have controversy behind it? An Angel Reese highlight that inspired you to pick up a basketball? Most of her noteworthy/famous moments involve or make mention of Caitlin Clark from her woman’s magazine cover, sports illustrated cover, interviews, and so on. I can understand the older players feeling overlooked, but they've had 3 decades to get their money up, and they haven't. They blame it on whatever they want to. The validity of any arguments they might present go right out the window as soon as someone points out that they wouldn't even have a league if the NBA wasn't funding it. Now that some real money has been made available to the league, they're refusing it because of pride.

Wassup, my name is Tom. I live in Tallahassee Florida.
I want to comment on the Caitlin Clark conversation.
Do me a favor and look at Caitlin Clark's stats compared to Diana Turasi's stats this year... Caitlin Clark's stats are better.
That is not a black or a white stat... its not subjective... it's a fact.
If you add into that the attendance and the TV viewership, then you can't dispute the overall impact.
Now, if Angel Reese would carry herself like Caitlin does, keep it about basketball 💯 and stay away from negativity... she would be so much more loved and admired. She is balling in her own right this year... she's averaging a double double.
Angel is gorgeous and she's talented... she deserves the shine too, but she'll never get it because of her attitude.

People like to say CC22 has no collegiate rings. In 2 years, Iowa was lifted up led by CC22. Win against the undefeated defending champions, loss to LSU. the second year one of the best passers in the NCAA leads in scoring and assists, sets all time records. Beat the defending LSU to get to the Final Four, beats the powerhouse UConn and pundit favorite Paige B, in the Final Four but loses to South Carolina in the finals to cap off their undefeated season titled THE REVENGE TOUR. Iowa was the only team they had to get revenge on. Bluder and company at Iowa refused to lay down and climbed that mountain. they may not have grabbed the ring, they made the climb. and for some reason the legacy women's basketball establishment is PISSED. I agree 💯, They made every point I’ve been talking about, these rookies should be on the USA team and I would even put JuJu on it like they did in the past when they put 1 college player on the USA team, she has an enormous fan base just like CC, that’s how you grow the game , introduce your stars. The league also needs to change the rules like the NBA did when they eliminated hand checking, get the physical play out and let these little guards create more, people want to see that, some of those girls have crazy handles but they can’t display it because of the hand checking and body checking, let the play and people will watch more girls will play, nobody wants to be close lined and body slammed , hip checked , they don’t get paid enough for that ish, 🤦‍♂️ wake up ladies

Team USA always had a strong youth presence. It just doesnt seem right. But I remember the teams before the pros could play. There will be less experienced players to chose from in 28. Clark's individual records says she belongs on that team. How do you market Team USA to the teen players if you dont reward an NCAA career like Clark's after she won 3 golds for Team USA?

"they're not new wnba fans, they're their fans following them"👏👏👏👏They don't get it, and that's because they're funded by the nba. They're entitled, think they deserve more money and profit share, but in actuality they're lucky to have a league as the wnba loses on average $10 mil every year any other business would been shut down years ago. now they finally have an opportunity to cash in and they're going to blow it cus of jealousy, ego and selfishness

I like Gil and his team but let's keep 💯 yes the 1st time the Sky played the Mystics on 6/6 -10,000 the 2nd time they played on 6/14 -4,200 both in Washington. The game against the Fever in Washington they had to move it to the NBA arena to accommodate 20,333 fans. So Angel had a good showing but then it was back down to Earth. Caitlin comes to town & had more fans show up than both Angel games combined. I know we have to do the black thing but the numbers, viewership, sales are saying Caitlin is destroying everyone like it or not. Stop comparing Angel and Caitlin because it's working against Angel. She has brought roughly 3,000 more fans to the Sky and about the same on the road whereas Caitlin has brought 13,000 on a average home and away so it's no close

sorry you had your time to get fans to your sport ... yet she in 14 games did more for the WNBA then all of you combined (like in traveling and fill arenas ) ... you just remind me of Steph Curry again ... everyone diss him before the draft ... they tried to diss him up until 2017 (before he was "overrated" ....KD join the team and "its not fair")...his teammates leave or injured ... he is going back to "overrated" ... then comes the Ring and FMVP 2022 ...

One of the smartest things I've heard on the whole WNBA vs Clark, Reese, etc, issue...Similar thing happened when Pete Maravich, a white player who was a national phenomenon in college and literally most popular player in the NCAA, got drafted and negotiated the first million dollar contract in professional sports (when even NBA stars were just getting $50,ooo a year) as a ROOKIE; players, teammates, other NBA owners, much of the media and conservative fans who accused Maravich of turning the NBA into the Harlem Globetrotters criticized, resented, maligned and even bad-mouthed and bullied him on the court despite Maravich bringing more attention and fans to the fame (ATL built the Omni bc of him).. After Maravich let the cat out of the bag, however, other players (like Jabbar) expected and asked for money and owners had no choice but to pay them after free agency was won in court.

There will be a big need for sports analyst as the women’s game grows. If the vets are nicer, the rookies fans will enjoy seeing them as analysts, but if they treat the rookies poorly, we are not going to want to watch them analyze the games. So they’re just ruining their own brand and their opportunity to make money in the future. At this point, I’m not gonna watch a show where DT is a sports analyst.

Me and wife were div 1 bball players. Cc has ultimate skills and is doing more than any other women in wnba.
In addition cc is also very likeable and kind hearted. In addition she can put the wnba on a new level but bring in the big $$$$ that would b much greater than even now.
Reese shoots herself in the foot and tries to draw attention to herself instead of being humble and letting her game speak for her.
I personally do not like her game but understand some do. But i cant stand her attitude and mean spirit so dont care to watch her.
Further, a rival means both are recognizing it. Cc doesnt even speak about reese. It is made by reese alone. Its not a rivalry.
U are making good points but missing the purpose for the wnba in the minds of many of these players. See Candace Wiggins story. Skylar also spoke of it. Many others have dealt with the real problem.
This is why cc is hated by the wnba but paige will b embraced as a rookie bc she is the agenda they want. See Candace Wiggins story and all those who have proven themselves liars over time through an intentional coverup of the agenda covered by race. Its not race. That was conquered long ago in sports.
They know basic business but their first goal is NOT money. They have to give us what we want but when we trying to explain something to them then we have to give them reasoning based on what they want...it is NOT first about money for the og and their following.
They know who moves the needle but she does not share their first goal of spreading their agenda...GOAL NUMBER 1 for them.
