I am SO SO SO excited about this! Thank you! I think you will see many more people come (and come back) to inav as a result of this. I do sincerely believe that there are many people who would like to try fixed wing but do not have access to a suitably long strip of ground to land their aircraft so this really opens up a whole new world for those, like me (who also don't have coding skills), who want to stay loyal to the inav project but have recently been tempted by ardu or left feeling like they will just miss out on VTOL all together. Thanks again and amazing work to date!

VTOL for me would be vital since I need to travel 1 hour to get to a decent place where I can fly my plane cause in my area I don’t have where to launch.
Absolutely positive in building a vtol as soon as you release it. Thansk for your work guys!!

This is great news! Brilliant stuff! I'd absolutely build a VTOL plane if INAV supports it! The only thing stopping me building one now is the fact that I've never used Ardu. However, I think in the end, I would have given in and built my first an Ardu plane if INAV didn't implement VTOL soon lol. Sooooo, I'm going to order my VTOL- ready T1 now, and patiently wait for INAV 7.0! Many thanks to Shota et al for all your efforts! It's greatly appreciated by us all! 🙂

Same with me I attempted to try to learn Adrupilot but learning adru on vtol is crazy hard, the way to learn it is on regular planes first, trying to learn it on VTOL that's like learning to drive a stick for the first time on a like 1974 Peterbilt that you got a double clutch & granny shift

Great news for the community. You never cease to amaze. I have several Ardupilot based platforms. The setup requires control of many parameters. I believe that just as iNav provides an excellent solution for fixed wing and drones without too many challenges, so will iNav VTOL. My dream is to take off from the garden towards the hills next to the house. Good job.

I put a 4" inch Kwad in a Dolphin with printed ducts. Servos and "main" Motor manual controlled, but i didn't worked well. Even in acro it pitch up and crashed, the amount of power to hover is also extreme high.

Great news about adding VTOL capabilities to iNav!!! Have been wanting to build a VTOL but only option now is Ardupilot which has a steep learning curve. Thanks iNav team for the push of VTOL into iNav 7.0. Can't wait to try it out.

The Schedule is a 7.0 final release in November and at least one month of RC Phase. So don't expect a Pre-release before end of september. Doung a special feature test release that excludes other not fully tested features as well is a big pile of work.

I'm very interested INAV may include VTOL. I'm starting a VTOL project wih ArduPilot, but beeing new to arduPilot, looks like it's gone be a long road for me. Even Inav dev not interested VTOL, should help as much as possible Shota's work, man the guy who fixed horizon drift deserved serious respect.

  • @AerialWaviator

Fantastic news. I'm interested in seeing VTOL becoming a supported feature-set for INAV. It's great to hear there will be a dedicated 'transition mode' between fixed-wing and multi-rotor modes. I think this is important, as it will allow tuning of transition parameters, as these can vary between wings depending on wing loading and power/thrust response available. Be it manual switching, or controlling timing and other parameters between each mode.
While a T1 Ranger style Y motor VTOL configuration was highlighted as the development platform, I would be curious if H motor (4-rotor) or tail-sitter VTOL will be considered as future options (2 motors with and without motor tilting). A tail-sitter is the simplest VTOL arrangements to build, and it may be possible to ignore, or minimize the transition for this type of VTOL wing. Just like wings (T-tail, V-tail, plank, etc) is a genre, and multi-rotor are a genre, VTOLs is also an unique genre of aircraft. Something that may serve to help set expectations when communicating what initial VTOL features will be implemented, as there will be lots of software effort that is not clearly visible.

looks awsome , offers ne w opportunities cause sometimes you need a stable video plattform and sometime more range.
I would guess that some in the line / pipe line inspection area will jump on the board cause those are usually active dji business drones, professional drones with a huge amount of air time. They tend to fly from 1 hub which usually is a car along the line at a certain speed and path = flight pattern and will do the same 1 year later. a special software then will do the magic to look for damages by comparison.
they fly from that hub with 2 drones in 2 directions and the farer they get away the more flight time get lost for flight to reach the previous end point of the investigation. And a vtol is much faster there , saves also energy compared to the copter mode, so more flight time per Wh would be expectable. Now multiply it with 2 if you have 2 drone operators in the hub or van then it adds up.
I personall find it awesome, the abilities even though I would not need it, but would like ot build one to understand a bit more of the implications that go on during the transitioning phases. I had seen tom stanton years ago working on such things and writing programs for that like his osprey build trials last year.
I still prefer the plane in general and a dji drone for the drone stuff and would not go for such vtol to replace one or the other, just to learn more about and understand it a bit better.
It should have also a huge impact on streetprices of vtol kits if that comes with inav inside instead of proprietaey solutions I had seen before .

I have a Jumper Xiake that I purchased to be my first VTOL testbed but it wasn't really flyable, the FC that came with it tested to brownout. I did replace it but the ardupilot configuration was beyond me at this point so I'm waiting for INAV with VTOL support eagerly :) I'll be on vacations next month so, if there's no RC until there I'm probably going to compile it myself and see what happens.

VTOL would make sense for me with X UAV Clouds, when a 3Kg aircraft is very difficult to launch, so it would make sense there. The question is how I could solve it. A tricopter would be great, but how to solve the rotation of the motors. And where to put 3 engine? Thank you

    • @MarcFPV
      @MarcFPV  11 місяців тому

you do not make a massive plane as the clouds into a 3-motor vtol. Usually planes of this size are build as quad rotors with struts like here: ua-cam.com/video/uPIGRoc4Mgg/v-deo.html
The problem is with 3 motors that you need to pivot 1 or 2 motors and this needs extremely powerful and reliable servos to do that fast enough. Quad VTOL you just need to tilt and you can use slower but strong servos instead.
Also imho the Clouds is one of the easiest to launch planes in my fleet. Usually its the landing that can be difficult as it needs a nice flat area.

I'd convert my Xiake to inav. It flies but not to my liking. Not a fan of ardupilot flight modes. They seem more designed for automated flight than the pilots enjoyment.
