Patrick, you know what? :) I never remember the end of the 10 min of "Breath light for sleep III" 😂, because I fall asleep before the exercise ends. I am so happy to have discovered your oxygen advantage app!

This is soo interesting. I can breathe in slowly but have a lot of trouble exhaling slowly after the first inhalation and exhalation.

It can be difficult at first @danielploy9143.
Start slowly with maybe an in breath of 3 seconds and an out breath of 4. Keep the mouth closed and don't push yourself too hard.
If you start to worry or become stressed, just stop the exercise and return to your normal breathing, relax for 30 seconds or a minute and try again. You know your body, so take it easy. Especially when we're winding ourselves down for bed.
      Hope that helps.

Thank you for this very informative and helpful video. Can someone advise how long and often is a good practice for this?

Do we have clinical evidence that changing how we breathe while awake will change how we breathe during sleep?

I have been a yoga practitioner for a long time and we use something called ujjayi breathing, which is breathing with a slight whisper sound in the throat. What are your thoughts on this.

Yet all meditations and yoga sessions have you deep breath ?

All of them? I don't think so. Different breathing patterns serve different purposes and yoga and meditation is usually done in the morning.
There is also a lot misinformation about breathing and how to get more oxygen in the body which is not through deep belly breathing unless it involves slowing down the breath enough to build oxygen hunger. 😊
I suggest you do a yoga practice with Simon Olivier-Borg. He won't tell you to do the ocean breath. 🙏☀️

@@cristinasanchez7600 thanks for the tip. However my evening sleep mediations “usually” have me take deep breaths. Interested to hear Patrick mckeown’s take in it.

For me the best breathing exercise before going to sleep is yawning. My body will get more stressed from building oxygen hunger on top of all the stress from the day and chronic poor sleep. Every time I do this exercise before bed, I sleep really really poorly! I can probably only tolerate taking one or two of these intentionally light breaths at the moment.
But long term breathing less during the day and night is the healthiest thing to do.

      Hi Vicki,
The funny thing about the term 'deep' breathing is how its meaning in yoga has changed over the years. The old yoga writings talked about breathing almost imperceptibly but in the late 1800s it became more about big breaths with the mouth and upper chest.
We advise people to breathe through the nose and avoid the mouth, even during yoga.
If you wish to know more about the connection between breathing and yoga, Patrick's new book Breathing for Yoga is currently available for pre-order: oxygenadvantage.com/product/breathing-for-yoga-book/

Hello Patrick, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have been a mouth breather all my life. Recently I started mount taping with some success. Do you have any tips for switching to nasal breathing?
