      What about all the evidence that the real world provides a 2014 study shows that more creative thinking students suffer at the hands of standardized test, many people who help grade these test are given grading quotas forcing them to give someone a higher or lower grad because the company distributing the test makes money off it, you can't say somethings full of shit if you don't look at the evidence in support of it. honestly a reform to school systems are long over due.

    This is exactly how I feel. I have 5 kids and see their struggle... same struggle that I have been through. Jamming all these information into their brain, which after a couple of years or even months after the exam they will forget. We need a new system of education. One which the children themselves get to choose which path they take, all we have to do is lead them the right way and show them the choices that they can make. Advise them and encourage them. That way we can nurture their natural talent and see them excel God willing.

    I recently got my alumni publication from my university. We had used the same desks that one of our instructors, who attended our school had used in the 70's. We used the same stools, same easels. The art department had only one working electric pottery wheel.
    I remember speaking with the then newly-appointed president of the university; some of the windows didn't open, the heat and air in the building didn't always work right, and as someone in that department, in that building five days a week, I wanted to see change. So I asked him for help. He made promises the year I graduated.
    The windows did get fixed, but the rest..? This year my school is doing a symposium that focuses on the importance of the arts... and the photographs from the art department show that nothing has changed. The stools and easels are still the same. When you don't give your students new technology to work with in any given department you are putting them behind their peers.
    I was going to try to shrug off how it made me feel. But your video has reminded me that if I just shrug it off, then they aren't the only ones brushing off their promises to change for the better.
    Thank you for the reminder.

    Best video on the internet IMHO... granted, I may be biased since I am I high school science teacher but I remember seeing this video during my own education and it struck a chord. If you are only seeking to pick out a single inaccuracy in the argument and use that as the basis for your rejection of the video you are missing the message. This is not saying that education should not be valued, it is not saying that public school serves no purpose, and it is not saying that there is a single solution to the crisis that we face as educators in which we are forced to work within a system that we have limited control over.
    The foundation of relationship based teaching is in line with the message that is being conveyed... we are not teaching a subject we are teaching a person. There is not ONE successful educator who does not take this message to heart and that is why this video is so important. From an outside perspective, there is simply no way to know the driving force behind the decisions that are made with regard to education in the United States. This video doesn't offer an answer to the problem that plagues our current system of education, rather, it raises awareness of the fact that that problem persists. As someone who did not struggle in the public education system this was an even I didn't understand until I was able to empathize with the students that I am tasked with preparing for the future.
    There is no one answer, there is no one solution, however through exploring different means and looking at the multitude of systems that are employed at a global level we can start to get a better sense of the way in which we can impart meaningful knowledge upon our students and prepare them for a world where the knowledge they obtain through their education can be used to improve not only their personal success but the development of the world in which they will live and raise their families.

    Good music and performance! Really tugs at the heart strings!
    What I find strange about this is that he mentions the evolving technological advancements that were created by the "OLD SYSTEM" while condemning it for being archaic.
    If it's so crappy, then how did that car/cell phone/computer improve?
    Answer: It's not totally broken. But of course, if teachers had the time and resources to treat students in a one-on-one fashion, results might be different. But in some ways, that's just moving FURTHER BACK IN TIME. Just go before schools and we had exactly this "praiseworthy" system.

    I showed my mom this video (because i believe that schools should change the way that they "teach/run") and she said that my report card defines my intelligence and instead of watching videos like this i should spend time studying.....anyways really liked the video, you said things that I thought about and couldn't find a way to say them

    • @myonlynick
      @myonlynick 7 років тому

      have your mom read this: report cards measure performance on RIGGED tests on specific topics not they entire subject! How many times did you study ' abcdef ' only to see question from ' klmnopqrs ' question pool? That is why they are rigged. Needless to say how WRONG, unproductive and damaging to a child's future potential it is when he/she is forced to memorize and regurgitate big chunks of USELESS information. School is killing children's most important skill: creativity. School waste your time by forcing you to memorize a lot of nonsense and tests you on that nonsense to see if you filled up your mind with enough Sh1t that will stunt your mind and creativity. Thus, report cards, that is not a way of measuring intelligence, but a way of measuring how good, obedient and complacent a future adult worker 9-5 a slave you are becoming! What is wrong with you hypnotized parents?

    @brianmaldonado7284 7 років тому

    first it starts with learning what toys kids like to play with. Teaching is more learning than it is teaching. kids will show their interests that way and in time throughout their advancement, more and more of what is involved in their interests should be fed to them on an individual basis. If they like playing with blocks, train them in construction. they will need math, physics. if they like to dress up dolls, they should be trained in fashion, etc. I dont know what interests mean what but I do feel that the school system should keep a focus on our interests instead of what they require all of us to learn. I accelerated my own interests while everyone was baffled about me. my dad knew I liked to take things apart to figure out how they work so for my 6th birthday he got me a tool kit with a philips and flat blade screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and an adjustable wrench. then he put them in his toolbox and let me use all of his tools as long as I put them back. I used to dig through dumpsters to find broken things that people threw away and I took them apart to find out why they were broken. I would dream things up and try to build them with components of things I took apart. some things I fixed. when I was 10 I fixed our remote control by re soldering a broken connection to the e prom chip. I worked on our cars with my dad and learned mechanics, I worked on irrigation systems with my dad and learned landscaping and plumbing. I repaired drywall and built walls with my dad and learned framing and finishing. I learned painting and texture. I learned roofing. I learned A/C work. I became a maintenance man for a large printing company and learned how highly complicated machinery works. The best thing I learned is electrical. I know how to run data systems, electrical connections from service entrance to final termination, I know how to run a fire alarm, I'm one of the best in my trade and I help out other trades along the way. I could be 10 times better at what I do now that is in high demand if the school system had tailored my schooling towards my interests. When I was in Elementary school I didnt care about the names of the oceans and continents. I cared about designing electrical circuits.

    give all the freedom to the kids to decide what and when they want to learn. kids learn by playing all the time. school is not the only solution. today, homeschooling, unschooling, etc. are valuable options. freedom to decide should have the highest value, much more than competion and achievement. climbing trees and being in nature are much more important than all the books...

    I’m currently being forced to do a project for something I have no idea what to do it with no help and I’m always expected to be a straight A student even though I’ve been on average making C’s and B’s -_- I despise the school system and think it should be changed the amount of stress I go through each day just for a single letter is unbearable.

    Hello! I am a Korean high school student studying a pedagogy
    After watching this video, because of my ignorance of the American education system, I had some questions.
    Why he said "no more common core"? and what is the common core?
