I hate this map and Refueling Base. The Pit has way too enemies and not enough ammo, and you start Refueling Base desperate for said ammo but barely get ant there either.
This is the map that burns out most doom 2 newcomers. It's got way too much stuff in it. First time I played it, when I got to the lift-stairs I was thinking "Won't this map just end already?!"
I stuck in a hall, I opened all the three doors and now he says that we should come back and open a yellow doors, but I'm stucked at the hall, I can not open that doors anymore.
@@BigMacDavis Well, after i played it after learning from your walkthrough, this has actually become one of my favorite maps. Except for the part with all the acid, very tedious.
Yeah I agree with you on this map. The amount of lifts, pain elementals and lost souls is annoying but there is something else. It doesn't feel like a finished map to me. Something feels a bit tacky and unappealing but I'm not sure what it is.
I agree with that as well. It's like this map didn't know what it was supposed to be or something. I don't see the theme to this map, except for the little pit at the start, but it doesn't correlate with the rest of the map.
***** This map was originally a type of city map, but it was changed late in development to (people think), preserve frame rate, which downgraded gameplay severely. If you look at an above comment of mine you can see why.
I like this map only because the music in it is actually used in the beginning of "The only thing they fear is you". Not only this, but the music that plays when a level is cleared is also used in the only thing they fear is you.
So many Lost Souls and Pain Elementals! That makes it quite annoying...... I also dislike that room with the elevator stairs! Thankfully you're done with this!
I wish you had been there when I first played this game in 1993. You made me download all Doom games serie from Steam, and thanks to your walkthroughs, I enjoy to play those games again. Thank you fot those videos, it is a pleasure to have you in front to meet those monster.
I though i was the only one saying to myself "Damn not this map again ! Ho well i have to do it to progress and beat the boss so let's get this over with" lol Once again good video with helpful tips :D Well done :D
Where would I be Without BigMacDavy? I'd be totally stuck on my game. My ps3 and I rendered quite lame. But thanks to this man with the lovely voice I am now able to have the choice To continue the fight in Doom Two. Thank you! (Got into a knot after the switch room).
Man, I am on this level and I seriously hate this map. So difficult. Thank you for this tutorial, really helped me A LOT! Edit: I still can't get past this!
Hey, that's a good idea how to raise the bridge around the rocket launcher, I didn't know about that. I always run and jump onto the platform with the RL. And thanks for the shoutout :-)
Yeah, I always felt running and landing on the Rocket Launcher was a bit hard sometimes. I spent a little bit trying to find an easier way and it just happened. And you're welcome, it's no problem.
I'm hooked to these videos! Doom has been one of my favorite games over the last 20 years! Anyone who knows me personally know I'm all about Doom and Super Mario lol
Thanks BigMacDavis, this level was really getting me down, back when I was 13 I would cheat my way through the last part with the elevator stairs... Every. Time. Now I'm completing the series on xbox because of the DooM reboot and I can't (and wouldn't) cheat. You just helped me complete that level legitimately for the first time ever. I have to say I am really enjoying these videos, your strategy is flawless. Thankyou very much.
I've been playing this game since it came out and got stuck on this level (it has been YEARS), I think I know what I have to do and it's incredibly annoying. Great narration by the way.
Love your videos and thanks for the help I use to play doom a lot and your videos help me out and I’m slowly becoming better I have not played in a long time I stopped playing in 98 I was 8 years old and was a good doom player I am slowly learning all over again thanks for the advice I am 33 years old now and I can’t get Enough of doom I love it so much
Aaaahh, nothing beats a good old therapeutic chainsawing through some pescy Lost Souls!! You, dear BigMac Sir, are a true master of your craft! I have played these levels hundreds of times on UV - but everytime I watch your videos I learn some new tactics and movement patterns. The ease with which you move and humiliate the enemies is beyond comparison.
Sometimes life's gonna get you down, Hit the ground running, take a look around, You think you found love, but you're standing in the pit. The pit. I fell in, in the pit. You fell in, in the PI-EE-IIIITTT!!
I love the music in this level. The level itself is extremely messy and some areas are frustrating, but I like the last room with the star of blue potions.
Over time coming back to these and learning the maps Iv become so good at the first part of doom 2 and the first episode of doom 1 lol. You make the best walkthroughs Iv ever seen!! Thank you
thank you very mutch! I did a nosave walkthrough and had to restart that level several times from pistol start. didn't know that mancubi and berserk opens up if you just walk to the switch and that chaingunners appears only if you walk all way down to shotgunners in the rocket launcher room. that helped me alot
Honestly thank you for this. I'm doing my best to play it blind, but sometimes the obvious answers don't click. I've been playing the switch ports of 1 2 n 3 while I wait for my my pc to get fixed and it's actually been super fun
Good grief 11:58 is exactly where I was stuck. I didn’t know you could open the fn wall up so I just kept roaming around the room with the lifting platforms thinking I had to figure something out in there 🤦🏻♂️
Btw so far this map has been one of my favorite ones (I just finished playing Doom 1 with all of its 4 episodes and I'm counting those in as well). I just think it's like a puzzle and it was thrilling to figure out how the map works. I mean Tricks and Traps was kind of cool as well. And also E4M2 from Doom 1 was a joy. Lots of moving parts etc.

Is there some sort of special secret with those switches? P.S.. with enemies 205/205 and secrets 6/6, when I stand in this area on the entry platform, I here some pinkies, but I cannot see any.
This level is a huge step up in difficulty from maps 1-6. Maps 7-8 try to prepare you for the difficulty ahead, but I still used to always get stuck on this one, so much so that it kinda grew on me over time :)

Thank you so much!!!! I always disliked this level, every time i would play Doom 2 i would think twice about it because of this level. U are a legend for completing this in extreme mode, to me there is no way i could get through without dying.
Damn you, Sandy Petersen. Pistol starting this map on UV I must've died at least 100 times. That BFG is a must. Oh well, onward to hitscan city aka Refuelling Base
9:08 When the platform is lowered (and you are quick enough), you can see a switch which reacts to being switched but I cannot figure out what it does and you don't mention it. Any thoughts?
At least the music, Into Sandy's City, is good in this otherwise mean level. It's kinda nice how the stupid Lost Souls infight each other to death. Also like the comparison of this level to your Spanish teacher. Anyways, nice video. Oh, and nice "Pit Stop" pun too, BTW. :)
Would be so much better if the lifts weren't so horribly long, the map would have much more gameplay then waiting and that's a good thing for sure! Looking forward for MAP24 and the secret maps :P
Yup, this map has its problems, but it's not as bad as some of these other maps in Doom II, such as Map24, yes indeed. I'm looking forward to the secret maps as well.
How the hell does he have all that ammo. His guns are doing way more damage than what I’m going through I’m at the end of this level there is still a lot of demons and I literally have no ammo
Ironically enough, I'm not a brony, but I get that quite a lot. My name apparently is MLP related, but it's actually because I ate Big Macs all through high school, people gave me that nickname, and it stuck throughout my adult life. And my profile picture takes inspiration from a demon horse my best friend and I would draw to each other in school. But I'm glad you were able to beat this map. :)
Hello, Sir, thank you for all the perfect walkthrough videos and for commemorating my childhood...:) I was 10 years old when Doom II was released. I like your commentary, I really appreciate that I can understand you every single word perfectly, because I'm not a native English speaker. This map is pretty dangerous but you take care of it so effectively. At 12:25 I prefer to take the other yellow door first. That way the enemies at the other side will in fight 👍🏻
GLBoom-Plus, the source port Altima uses, limits the number of Lost Souls on the map (I think no more than 21 can be on the map without the Pain Elemental spawning Lost Souls). You can also disable that in ZDoom, but I chose to leave it on.
I cleared the chaingunner room before figuring out the location of the BFG, and needless to say, I was pissed 🤣 I only figured out there was a BFG here because of this video!
Just started the game over so that I could be more conservative with ammo. I would just check and make sure I had roughly the same amount of ammo after each section. Nailed it the second time through.
12:00 omg i'm so stupid I couldn't figure out how to get back to the other room. All I had to do was come up to the wall and press spacebar lol!. It's been a while playing Doom II lol!. I'm actually playing Brutal Doom makes it a bit more fun. Thanks for keeping your video up so long to help me in 2020 quarantine! lol :).
Sweet, man, glad you were able to figure it out. And yeah, I played through Doom II on Project Brutality in a few livestreams if you'd like to check those out.
There's a guy called spidermastermind100 on Steam and he's putting your walkthroughs up too, he asked me and I said it's fine, I've been putting your videos on BFG Edition and he's been putting it on the games separately on the games themselves (plus final doom), so, thanks to him!
Sooo much pain-elementals and freakin' lost souls. A sad thing is that i've only player doom 1 and I came to lvl 5 only using the pistol because i diddn't know how to change weapons, LOL btw i call this the troll-level
This map ends a lot of "I'm gonna beat doom 2 in one sitting!" impulses I get every so often

I hate this map and Refueling Base. The Pit has way too enemies and not enough ammo, and you start Refueling Base desperate for said ammo but barely get ant there either.

Yeah, this map sucked for sure. But after 5 run throughs trying to maximize your armor and ammo, you kind of learn to love the drudge.

I have the Steam version of "Doom 2", and the Lost Souls limit not only happened on there, but also on my old CD-ROM version as well.
Yes, it happens on the original exe versions as well. Most source ports give you an option if you want the limit or not. I just chose not to.

Indeed.
Yeah, I noticed that when I logged into Steam last time. I had more guides on Steam than I had seen before. That's cool.
"If you so desire" That's gonna be my senior quote
