You don't have to circle completely around the pits to raise the platforms. The first one will start raising once you pick up the Plasma Rifle. The second one will raise once you step in the middle. The third one with the Invulnerability what I do is I land next to the Invulnerability, but not grab it, I just make the platform to raise up and once it's up then I pick up the Invulnerability so I could acutally make a use of it. Also you don't need the blue key, from the start you can go to the far right, go through the door into the ledge room, drop down to the poison and then just go around the ledges and take a teleporter that will teleport you onto the platform with the Radiation Suit next to the Invulnerability. And also this map is one of the reasons why use source ports like GLBoom+ so you wouldn't have to kill Lost Souls and then deal with problems like the Lost Soul teleporting to the start of the map.
Wow, thanks for all this information, my friend. I didn't know about the platform with the Plasma Rifle, and I certainly didn't know about the Blue Key not being needed in this map. As far as Lost Souls counting as kills, it's one of the negatives of using ZDoom. They all count as kills.
Zdenda1990 I agree. When I am playing this map, for that secret, I stand next to the invulnerability but NOT grab it, so that it will raise up and so that there could be a purpose of the invulnerability. Also it's best to play through the original Doom II source port which Lost Souls do NOT count towards kills percentage.
Another pointer: In the final room (the one with the lost souls and ever-narrowing ledges), you might want to consider getting that floor to raise BEFORE getting the red key.

The “secret” to the secret invulnerability is to use the shielding suit on the nearby ledge. Teleport to the suit via the teleporter next to the megasphere, equip it, then drop into the lava pit surrounding the invulnerability. Start repeatedly activating the outside wall to raise the lava floor and repeat 13 times until the lava is even with platform on which the sphere sits. Race across the platform to pick it up, and continue activating the outside wall 4 times until you can proceed down either ledge. If you remain on the platform instead, the surrounding lava will raise automatically, and you must activate the lava wall to raise the platform up. The invulnerability lasts long enough to be useful in fighting off the lost soul ambush after teleporting into the final room. Just be quick navigating the ledges to the upside-down body teleporter.
Or you can just jump to the side of the platform where the invulnerability is rather than the middle and then just raise the platform up and take the invulnerability when it suits. Yes, I know this is three years late, I am always late to the party. :D

Doing my first playthrough in over 20 years and this is one of the few maps I still remember well. Back when I was 13 or so it took me forever to get past this. I got stuck in the first half for a long time before I found the second teleporter on the chasm floor that took me back to the top of the pillars and then figured out how to jump back onto the main path. Getting into the secret control room. Then there was falling into the poison pits. The use of height and scale is memorable - very new for games of the time, it's too bad they didn't use this more (the Circle uses it, another memorable level). I also like how it encourages literal tiptoeing around rather than charging into things. The color palette here is just very "Doom" to me. The music matches up pretty well too. I wish the level were a bit longer and more interesting but then I remember when I used to make my own levels I would sometimes run into crashes when areas had lots of scale and also lots of detail. After you grab the useless invulnerablity, if you keep pressing use instead of getting out when the lift is level with the platform around, you can continue to rise it up until the ceiling
This is so funny, especially when you say, "Don't be an ass soul" and "Stupid-ass souls!" as punny names. Also, you couldn't understand the plot of the blue room, let alone the narrow ledge walking, especially with your voice trembling and quivering as you go along. And the part when you get all jumbled trying to explain what's going on, it made me literally LOL! Anyway, this Chasm map is evil, end-of-story. Nice vid on how you survived all this with all the bravery you have. :)
11:30 just don't grab it. Land on the platform (without grabbing the invulnerability), wait for the platform around you to raise, then drop off and press space on both the middle and outer portion to raise everything to the same level. Then grab the invulnerability and run over to the next area with hell knights and mancubi.
Hi BMD. So ridiculous this level is. The video you made of it is very entertaining and it is THE video that brought me to your channel. Back in the days I played doom and doom 2 and final doom just on the original playstation. And while looking for the creepy soundtrack of Aubrey Hodges for this games who did an amazing job to create such a tight atmosphere by the way, your video of this map came on. I didn't know the map because it was one of many the psx-version not have in it. So I watched it and was infected. Thank you. You do an amazing job not only on doom.👍❤
"Your hate has made you powerful" Jeff, lol. This map is nonsense, chaotic and like you said, a "big middle finger", especially at those narrow ledges and platforms raising up after you pass them. That invulnerability was pointless too. In brief, this map explore the flaw in Doom at the time, the "fake" 3D enrironment, because Doom is actually 2.5D, so you can't use the Z-axis to look up and back that probably would help a little bit on this map. Anyway, nice job for beating it.
Haha, thanks. I felt the dark side creeping up on me there. I almost became a Sith Lord. But it's passed - I have given up my emotions. Anyway, as far as this map goes, it sucks. At least the last room does.
Also, 18:00 as is usual with switches in Doom, you don't have to ride the platforms up to press the switch, switches and doors activate regardless the height difference from you (just like in the industrial zone, the red door can be activated while you're riding the lift up, although that's not advisable since there's probably some imps waiting behind)/
This map is really outstanding so I want to say a couple of words about it. Overall I like this map. It's definitely one of the hardest in doom2 but it's very interesting at the same time. It keeps you concentrated and pushes to think. Also I'd like to give some tips. In the area with slime near exit I usually make one shot from BFG when coming from teleporter for the first time. That way most of lost souls will be killed and there will be only couple of distant lost souls remaining. You can easily kill them via supershotgun or chaingun. As for the secret with invulnerability I've found a way to take this without waiting. You just need to lend on one of the borders of the platform with invulnerability. You need to go there standing little left or right from the center. Probably it's easier to do from the area with the suit and the box of rockets. So you''ll be on the platform but you won't pick up invulnerability instantly. Then bigger part of platform will begin rising. You should take a step to right or left to fall on the rising floor. And then rise it to maximum level. Invulnerability now will be lower than you. And then you should take a little step down from one of the corner to center area with invulnerability. You'll be there without picking it again. And then turn to the wall and press Use button on keyboard couple of times. Center area will rise step by step until it will became big flat square area. Then you can make a step from invulnerability to left it for later or pick it up and run to do whatever you want. And so you can use full time of invunerability bonus. However it took some time for me to do this. So you probably will need to make saves before the secret and before the area near exit.
I think this map is good practice in saving your game and saving it often. The narrow ledges w/o teleporters come up after you get the blue key, so if you weren't saving up to that point you're SOL and gotta start over.
11:20 Not sure if it's intended, but at the right angle if you press several times the border of the pointless invulnerability you can raise the floor before getting the invulnerability it takes less time to set you free from this square and you can use the invulnerability to fight the barons later. Interesting, but not very useful anyways.
The rooms with those narrow ledges I just take them one area at a time and I save the game on each ledge so that if something happens I don’t have to go back very far and it’s manageable. I don’t like the level much myself but I like the challenge of it.
13:28 the wall with the demons and specters opens up anyway if you simply get close to the computer panel, also there is ammo in the slime in the room with the invulnerability
11:25 i don't know if my version of the game is weird but what i do is the following: i jump on the edge of the little platform where the invulnerability sphere is and i don't grab it. then i can press the use key with a little delay in between the seperate "pressings" of the use key so they little platform rises up. you will need to do this multiple times. when the platform is high enough i strafe run to the area where radiation suit and the rockets are, after i grabbed the sphere. then i head in the direction of the megasphere and when the first split comes up, i head to the right. at this point my invulnerability is still active and i can easily kill a few of the tougher enemies in that area (i usually play on hurt me plenty so for me there are two hell knights and two mancubi i can kill before the sphere runs out).
About the "futile" secret. You can jump onto the platform but not take the invincibility sphere. Only touch the trigger. You can even drop to the poisonous floor after you have collided with the trigger. The floor raises (it's safe after the collision) and you can grab the sphere.
Another thing about this map, which you didn't mention is that narrow ledges and the four secrets aside this map is completely unmemorable. I keep forgetting half the areas in it, and I can't say that about any other map in this game. Btw I have found the map with 100 items, it is Refuelling Base.
You speak the truth. I spent two recordings on this map. And that's because I missed the area in the poison with the enemies. It was unmemorable to me.
the end where the platform goes up is made for people who don't think they need a red keycard so they go back and find out you need and then they can go back instantly
at 11:49 iirc you CAN trigger the line that will cause the floor to raise without falling down (for example at one of the edges of the small paths by "jumping" from one side to the other in a small step just a bit over the border) so it should be possible to actually benefit from the invul by first waiting for the floor to be up and then jumping to the item.
I love the aesthetics and the design of this map but I agree, those ledges are an absolute pain. If they put teleports in the poison, it wouldn't be too bad. Inescapable pits are one of the worst parts of doom 2.
Despite the very critisism of what doom 2 fans have over this level of the chasm I actually enjoy the whole entire exploration process of the map itself although to quiet and spooky sometimes but like the musical tone
Playing on an iPhone, those narrow ledges were Hell. Thought I'd outsmart creator by saving along the way, but reload had me falling into the poison. Then going back to the blue door save for ***sighs*** another do-over... Thanks for the walk-thru
i guess whenever theres a room with a water ceiling in vanilla doom, its supposed to be "under water". and since there is only a red (blood as in bloodfalls) and green (slime as in this map) "water texture" with the pouring down animation, they for some reason resorted to that "tech" type blue texture on the walls for "under water". i too always wondered why there wasn't a blue water texture for the side walls when i was doing maps.
Actually there's a way to raise up the platform without grabbing the invulnerablity, but you have to be really careful not to fall down or pick the invulnerablity up. But with some practice, it's possible.
+Teion M83 I think the idea is starting here 14:36. Grab the radiation suit, jump into the lava, raise both platforms to the same level, grab the invincibility, then continue to the area 15:25 quickly and kill the S-Souls.
I am a bit against the majority here - I love the design of this level and the hellish feel with all the ledges and lost souls and damaging floor, green slimefalls etc. so much, that I frankly believe this to be one of the best maps in all of Doom II.
NOT POINTLESS SECRET. If you just land on the platform and don't pick up the sphere, the side platform will raise up and then you pick up the sphere and kill the lost souls. Love the series though I've been playing along thanks.
Or could have grab the radiation suit, jump into the poison and keep pressing on the sides of the wall to raise the floor until you can grab the invulnerable sphere.
15:27 Lost Souls last resort: teleporting to the beginning of the level(maybe that ASS SOUL knows you hate narrow ledges). Anyway this was fun to watch. School starts tomorrow(luckily it starts in the afternoon) so yeah, not looking forward to it. But your awesome videos make my day awesome. Keep it up :) P.S. Sorry for the long comment.
Restarted the map and and I'm about 3/4 of the way done with no damage. Running over lava or sludge sometimes does damage but I save before crossing if I take damage. This map is a pain in the ass!
I didnt even know there was a blue key until looking this up out of curiousity. If you fall off the ledge at 1:23 you can run to the teleporter and skip needing the blue card. This walkthrough is that of completing the level the long way. Its only worth doing if you care about getting 100% secrets. There are 2 ways to complete this map. Of course skipping the blue card saves a lot of time, so speedrunners dont complete the map this way. You can finish this map in 34 seconds if you go the short way
Yup, you can complete this map in a matter of just a few seconds, which is fantastic news for a map like this. But for people who want 100% like I do, it's such a tease.
What I like to do with the thin walkways is get to them before I have the red key and save my game. Then I'll walk along them to the red door where I will save again. Now I have a solid platform from the teleporters to the red door.
11:13 Actually, on the narrow ledges with the poison pin, The floor starts raising once you grab the Plasma Rifle, not after you cross back. So, theoretically, You can cross over, grab the PR, fall into the pit with the Cacodemons and ride it up to the top. The poison dissipates once the floor starts raising also. Not recommended obviously, but I have done it before.
At 10:17 If you like to save a lot in within levels, don't save on the skinny pathways in this room, I ran into a glitch that makes me fall through the floor and become stuck and will get killed by the poison when you reload your save there.
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

I think i can explain some weirdness in this map. First the maze-like room with walls of slime and a different scealing - well it's because the walls aren't isolated in Hell so moisture just take over and literally come out of the walls lol The blue room with all the demons and a water scealing is probably like that because of the global warming, yes even in Hell it gets warmer lol Now back to the video itself, you did a good job to go through this map without falling in the poison death traps (of even a greater job to contain your hatred toward this map lol) Keep it up my friend and till next time take care :)
I'm trying to go for Superior Fire Power which is completing Doom 2 Hell On Earth On Ultra Violence difficulty! I love what you have taught me thus far!
I'm sure someone has mentioned this already, but the invulnerability can be properly picked up after bringing up the sectors around it. Don't remember the details, but you gotta just fall down there instead of going for the green orb.
That invulnerability secret that makes you to raise the platform, it's possible to raise both of the platforms up to the ceiling. And that teleport infront of the megasphere platform got raised up somehow, how did you raise it?

After you grab the useless invulnerablity, if you keep pressing use instead of getting out when the lift is level with the platform around, you can continue to rise it up until the ceiling
18:40 The Gameboy version has teleporters in the poison and the ledges are wider. I don't know if it's different on the hardest difficulty
3:30 I didn't know fist fighting pinkies was a viable way to kill them.
As long as it isn’t nightmare or ultra violence plus then i guess it works
Good way to save ammo too.
I don't know why, but this is my favourite map. Really. Greets from Poland. Good luck!
I hate this map. I am also from Poland
Cool story, my friend, and thank you. :)
Bro your walkthroughs are so interesting that I could watch them all night thanks for them brooo you fire
Thanks! These Walkthroughs were a lot of fun to make. :)
Being able to move around a 2d image is still 3d in my opinion.
Making it to the near end of the level just to fall into the green acid, one of the worst feelings ever.
Thanks so much for this vid because I was hopelessly lost in this map!
That blood splatter around 4:22 was so awesome
I think this map is good practice in saving your game and saving it often. The narrow ledges w/o teleporters come up after you get the blue key, so if you weren't saving up to that point you're SOL and gotta start over.
11:20 Not sure if it's intended, but at the right angle if you press several times the border of the pointless invulnerability you can raise the floor before getting the invulnerability it takes less time to set you free from this square and you can use the invulnerability to fight the barons later. Interesting, but not very useful anyways.
Hell knights, not barons.
Can't say I'm a fan of this map either. I admire you going back for that Lost Soul that teleported. I'd have left him.
"Ass- soul" LMAO love that.
You can know when BigMac is annoyed by a level when he starts to complain about the room designs and purposes.
Isnt this level supposed to take place in Hell? What is with all the human technology?
Yet another reason why this map is bad...
Why does it matter? It’s Doom, it’s not gonna be super ‘realistic’. Not to mention that hell doesn’t even exist.
I love your DooM videos! I also like your American accent to learn because I'm a Russian studying English and that's really useful for me
I love the aesthetics and the design of this map but I agree, those ledges are an absolute pain.
The blue room is beautiful..
Always amazing dude :-) thx for everything you do!
Glad you enjoy the walkthroughs, keep on rockin'! :)
@@BigMacDavis WILL DO CHIEF! LONG LIVE THE DOOMED PONY EMPIRE HAHAHA 😀
Thanks David I appreciate that you helped me with doom
I'm working on trying to find all the secrets in all levels
Playing on an iPhone, those narrow ledges were Hell.
Thought I'd outsmart creator by saving along the way, but reload had me falling into the poison. Then going back to the blue door save for ***sighs*** another do-over...
Thanks for the walk-thru
Yup, that also happens on PC, where if you save on a very narrow ledge and then reload, you will fall down. Glad the walkthrough helped. :)
You know what this map needs? a few CyberDemons and SpiderMasterMinds shooting at you on the narrow ledge zones.
Ohhh, you're so evil! :)
i guess whenever theres a room with a water ceiling in vanilla doom, its supposed to be "under water".
and since there is only a red (blood as in bloodfalls) and green (slime as in this map) "water texture" with the pouring down animation, they for some reason resorted to that "tech" type blue texture on the walls for "under water".
i too always wondered why there wasn't a blue water texture for the side walls when i was doing maps.
11:50 you need to get in the outer ledge before you take the invulnerability
Actually there's a way to raise up the platform without grabbing the invulnerablity, but you have to be really careful not to fall down or pick the invulnerablity up. But with some practice, it's possible.
+Teion M83 I think the idea is starting here 14:36. Grab the radiation suit, jump into the lava, raise both platforms to the same level, grab the invincibility, then continue to the area 15:25 quickly and kill the S-Souls.
Can you do a Speed run of Doom 2 with nightmare?
11:39 You can jump in that area and activate the rise without actually grabbing the invulnerability.
I am a bit against the majority here - I love the design of this level and the hellish feel with all the ledges and lost souls and damaging floor, green slimefalls etc. so much, that I frankly believe this to be one of the best maps in all of Doom II.
5:31 Davis: Yes! A secret inside of a secret
Map 31: Am I a joke to you?
Keep it up :)
P.S. Sorry for the long comment.
Those Ass Souls know the predicament I'm in and they exploit that. Good luck in school tomorrow. ;)
Thanks dude :)
"The slime is coming out a steel ceiling" - they might want to have a word with the builders about a major dampness issue there.
Ah, thank you. Until someone pointed it out, I didn't know about that. :D
Thanks so much, i'm new to gaming and I downloaded doom for the laptop and your walkthroughs are my failsafe when I get stuck xD
Dang. Im late af, but i don't care. I have watched almost all of these doom 2 walkthroughs. Helped me with weapons, and overall health sustaining. Even though this is like, 3 or more years ago, keep this up! I love your walkthroughs, (especially go 2 it, that made me laugh hard). Anyways, keep this up!
Thank you! Glad you are enjoying! :D
@@BigMacDavis you are certainly welcome, by all means.
My favorite Doom video was Mount Pain. I guess you could say that I am sadistic like that
I swear this map has a map’s worth of optional content
When you grab two radiation suits at once does the effect last twice as long?
no
Ah, the chasm. I just like this map. Its really nice looking especially considering its a Sandy's map. I understand some parts of it are tedious, but I just cant help it, I love this map. Anyway I'm a sucker for doom 1, 2 and Final Doom, I like all the maps, hehe.
Just did this level again and really enjoyed it, certainly a lot more than maps 21, 22 and 23…
Love your voice
I think i can explain some weirdness in this map. First the maze-like room with walls of slime and a different scealing - well it's because the walls aren't isolated in Hell so moisture just take over and literally come out of the walls lol
The blue room with all the demons and a water scealing is probably like that because of the global warming, yes even in Hell it gets warmer lol
Now back to the video itself, you did a good job to go through this map without falling in the poison death traps (of even a greater job to contain your hatred toward this map lol)
Keep it up my friend and till next time take care :)
I can see your points with some of the rooms. That does make a little more sense. And yeah, I didn't really want to sound too whiny in this map, lol.
Well nobody is perfect so i guess this also can be applied to ID staffs lol (for this map they failed to achieve perfection lol)
Yes. A couple other people have mentioned this before. Thanks. :)
That invulnerability secret that makes you to raise the platform, it's possible to raise both of the platforms up to the ceiling.
And that teleport infront of the megasphere platform got raised up somehow, how did you raise it?
11:58 Perhaps the point of that werdly-placed invulnerability sphere is to more easily kill those 2 Cacodemons?
Could. But why even put it down there in the first place, you know?
You can rise the platform with the green sphere (god mode) without grabbing it.
Is there a chance you'll be doing a Quake walkthrough at some point?
Yes, definitely. Sometime in the future.
