Lyrics:
Here's forty shillings on the drum
For those who volunteer to come,
To 'list and fight the foe today
Over the Hills and far away
[Chorus]
O'er the hills and o'er the Main
Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain
King George commands and we obey
Over the hills and far away
When duty calls me I must go
To stand and face another foe
But part of me will always stray
Over the hills and far away
[Chorus]
If I should fall to rise no more
As many comrades did before
Then ask the pipes and drums to play
Over the hills and far away
[Chorus]
Then fall in lads behind the drum
With colours blazing like the sun
Along the road to come what may
Over the hills and far away
[Chorus] X4
This would make an excellent British anthem.
Better than god save the Queen, stuck up deluded cow
Yeah it would. Change some of the reference points, like King George to the Queen, the Spanish main to the EU prats and it would be fucking great.... I reckon it would go off like a rocket.

Impossible for some people to understand, but I'll retire after 40 years in uniform 13 months from now. As an Anglo-Irish working class boy with few prospects the words of this song explain - if only to me - why. And if I were that young boy today - I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
You are a hero 🇬🇧🏴
@Aliaholic123 Pearson He's probably from Northern Ireland, but yes there are still Anglo-Irish in the Republic. Also, Anglo-Irish are an ethnic group, not a religious group.
@Aliaholic123 Pearson A republican in a protest??
@Aliaholic123 Pearson Anglo-Irish are English settlers in Ireland who in some cases have lived there since the 1100s. They are their own ethnic group now, and their own culture.
I am descended from Anglo-Irish settlers partially. I am also Ulster (a province in Ireland)-Scottish.
Both are ethnic groups constantly being threatened by Irish Nationalists who want to maintain the ethnic purity of Ireland.
@Aliaholic123 Pearson I live in America now, and I still have relatives in Ireland, but not Anglo-Irish ones. I am friends with Anglo-Irish though, and personally identify as such, and the Irish don't treat us well. It's complicated, to make matters brief, under Elizabeth I some Lords chaffed under new laws while most were fine with it, laws that were designed to make Ireland less tribal (Ireland had a lot in common with Native Americans and was the least advanced culture in Europe), as I said, most Lords were fine with it, and it was passed with consent of the Irish Parliament. However, those Lords who did not agree with it started slaughtering the Anglo-Irish.
This could also be traced to the Medieval Era when some Irish did this as well and saw the English as Gaelitic, Irish for practically barbarians. If you weren't Irish you weren't anything, even the Scottish who speak the same language were treated harshly in the Irish mindset at this time. However, the nature of these conflicts was different, more about land, less violent in some cases, kind of. Intermarriage was common.
In the 1600s the Catholic Church started telling the Irish to kill the Anglo-Irish and Scottish, saying that they were heretics (for being Protestant) and God would love them for it, so they then attempted genocide. When the Irish Lords who participated or stayed neutral in the conflict were punished by in the case of the guilty (losing all of their land and being granted new land in the West of the country) and the non-aligned (losing some, most likely for abetting a genocidal regime), it caused resentment.
The Irish hated the Anglo-Irish settlers who had been granted portions of their land, and in 1690 they launched a coup and decided to ethnic cleanse people again, before they could, they were stopped. Then laws were placed on the Irish making it illegal for them to own weapons, breaking up land ownership into smaller pieces so less men could be raised in an army from a single person, and making them responsible for the damages occurred by Catholic Nations seeking to invade Ireland and aid the Irish in their struggle from what our perspective was to kill us all.
Come the end of the 1700s, that movement dies, religious tolerance which was already best in England besides anywhere else save the Netherlands (in Europe) and those laws were gradually all repealed, but the damage was done in the minds of those who wanted land back.
So they started a new movement for Home Rule which advocated for you guessed it, genocide of the non-Native Irish in Ireland. The British government under the Liberals even aligned with them, thinking they could be persuaded to accept the Union between Britain and Ireland by kindness, that backfired 100 years later and the Irish DID commit genocide against them and killed any Catholic rising to their defense or the defense of the United Kingdom.
The IRA went throughout the countryside, killing "Capitalist, Imperialist whores", mostly Protestants and mostly Anglo-Irish and Ulster-Scottish, and any Catholic who dared offer a word in their defense. After Independence was won, 80% of the Protestant population of Southern Ireland would flee to Northern Ireland over the next 20 years after state sponsored discrimination and ethnic cleansing took place. The Protestants were herded into ghettos, forbidden from attending public schools, attending University or holding positions in government. Violence against Protestants was common, and even encouraged by the government, despite the Anglo-Irish trying to remain loyal to the new state despite desperately wanting to stay apart of the United Kingdom, which they felt was their country.
Today the Anglo-Irish live mostly in Northern Ireland and constantly fear genocide if it should fall to the Republic of Ireland. Meanwhile the Biden Administration is telling Britain to "Get out of Ireland' and is putting pressure on Britain, this has led Britain to halfway abandon the Anglo-Irish, Ulster-Scottish and Irish Unionists (who seek to preserve the Union in the UK) and has caused renewed violence in a country where I still have family.
I hate Trump, but Biden is racist against as we would say in Northern Ireland, my own. So I would not vote for either of the devils, so last November I voted Libertarian and Democrat down ballot. I feel a lot of Americans believe the Irish Catholic claim of martyrhood and victim status, when they gave as much and in most cases far more than they got and were far more harsh to us than we ever were to them. Not to mention, we did what we did to protect our people, they did what they did to take land back that was taken from them for rebelling against the Crown (which was the norm in Europe) or attempting to kill us.
We are an endangered minority, who still wants to remain in the UK, and above all, alive, and we are constantly getting fucked by Americans who give money to those seeking to blow us up.

I've been humming this all week. I stumbled across the Sharpe series movies quite accidentally at my local libray last week, never even heard of it before. Been ripping through them all week, up to Sharpes Sword so far. Totally hooked on this show.
Read the books, start with the first written, Sharpe's Eagle (Bernard Cornwell went back and wrote the prequels later, and Sharpe's Assassin comes out end of September '21).
It is that sort of tune isn't it ;-)
Now thats binge watching
When you finish you should watch Hornblower
With Hornblower at sea and Sharpe on land it's no wonder Napoleon was defeated. The poor man never had a chance.
If you refer to such characters go search historical ones like Admiral Tomas Cochrane actual legend of the British navy.

We re-created both units with museum quality reproduction gear and traveled around the north eastern United States and Canada for re-enactment events. Patriotic songs from any country make me remember what great things my grandfather did for the state of North Carolina. He was born in the small city of Winston- Salem and went on to graduate from Princeton University a very prestigious school. He then joined the military and became a intelligence captain in the us army and was sent to Iran. He then came back became a lawyer and then served 2 terms as a senator and two terms in the house for the state of North Carolina. He was an influential person and passed many good laws for disabled people as would help him later in life. He then went back to being a lawyer and then retired. He was then diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease that has no cure. He is currently under extensive care by relatives and he is basically blind. It makes me sad that he might leave this world soon as he was the most inspiring person in my life. To this day he is one of the kindest, smartest, and most loving person I have ever known.
Your father sounds like one of the real, good guys. Sorry to hear about the Parkinson’s. Losing fathers is just so painful. The fact that it happens to all of us doesn’t mean it’s not a very painful thing. And the pain can last a long time before it isn’t so present all the time.

Chris Murphy replied:
What a fantastic question. No sarcasm at all. I'm an Aussie, and the Brits, as small as the land mass they occupy, are the last people I would want to fight with. The last. I'll deal with crocodiles, over a tonne, I'll deal with kangeroos who will punch and kick your teeth in, not to mention the Kiwis (New Zealand).
You don't want to start a fight with the UK. Seriously. You really don't. They have a don't care attitude towards you. Stiff upper lip if you will. Gentlemanly, if you please. That attitude will be maintained until the last. The very last. They are the only group who ruled the world, and then gave it back.

I’m a Yankee and proud of it, but today I’ll salute the gallantry of the generations of the British army. You were worthy foes, and today you’re worthy allies.
I'm an American former Marine of Dutch descent, and very likely one or more of my ancestors resisted the English crown and mad King George, but this beautiful soldier's ballad and the Sharpe and Zulu imagery bring a tear to my eye.
Mad George commands, and we obey.
While the Bluecoats executed noncombatants, the Redcoats freed slaves.
Win or lose, do what's right, and care not for what history says. 🇬🇧
King George wasn't mad, he was a much maligned king! I served all my life, 1965 - 2005, as a Redcoat in a Scottish infantry regiment and never regretted a days service.
@@frankmorton1920 Wasn't he mad, though? I do recall reading that he had mental illness, and his son, George IV, the prince of Wales, ruled in his father's stead even before his father died.

Now what do you mean by “that it will never work” I base my political view point on the past and modernize as needed, I base my view point on the past because history often repeats itself and you can often see the patterns and can determine the what going to happen and also create strategies to try and shift the nation form civil war or worse communism

They just walk slowly towards almost certain death just like they did at the Somme where my Grandfather was. It makes me weep every time at the waste - on all sides.
The history of homo sapiens is the history of war. It has been our method of choice for settling disputes since time immemorial. You can call it a waste if you wish, but until people are no longer forced into the choice of dying on their feet or living on their knees, we're stuck with it. The people of Belgium and northern France who endured 4 years of German occupation were very grateful that men from o'er the hills and far away were willing to die for their freedom.
My Grandad was at the Somme, on the first day, he was part of the team who planted " The Lochnagar Mine"

Discovering the depth and beauty of British culture through songs like 'Over the Hills and Far Away' is truly a captivating experience. The melodies, steeped in the rich heritage of the British Isles, have an incredible way of touching the soul. It's a journey that makes you want to weep, yet you find yourself drawn closer by the hauntingly beautiful tunes. This is more than just music; it's a profound connection to a cultural tapestry that spans centuries. Here's to the timeless allure of British traditions and the emotions these melodies evoke. Dear Brits, ban immigration - this is is your heritage. It's really sad to see Great Britain fall like this, with this whole mass immigration and islamisation.
