Lyrics:
Here's forty shillings on the drum
For those who'll volunteer to come
To 'list and fight the foe today.
Over the hills and far away.
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
When duty calls me I must go
To stand and face another foe.
But part of me will always stray
Over the hills and far away.
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
If I should fall to rise no more,
As many comrades did before,
Then ask the fifes and drums to play.
Over the hills and far away.
Then fall in lads behind the drum,
With colours blazing like the sun.
Along the road to come-what may.
Over the hills and far away.
My best mate had this song played at his funeral. Only 34 years old. Now that's soldiering.
Sure as fuck is. I would have broke down in the happiest, saddest tears ever." Cried and laughed until the tears themselves become the very wine of blessedness"- Tolkien
@@alkdklsdflkfds6970, I frickin love Tolkien.
God Bless you and your mate
no thats sad....34 is way way too young
He deserved this song. It’s all about him, man.
The English Scottish Irish and the Welsh might not really like each other but you put them in a army together and you've got the best fighting force in the world.
Aye, the things that a united British nation can do is astounding. Better together!
The "best fighting force in the world" that can defeat the French/Germans only if allied with everyone else in Europe though...
LeHappiste They can't take us. But we can take them.
sooooo goddamn true, put away there diffrences them together dominated in every theatre of battle the empire had, long live the empire, Hazaarrrr!!!!
The combination of Celtic passion and ferocity with Germanic efficiency and planning seems to be a winning one. The British Empire proved that theory
I m a huge fan of britain, the people, the history, the cities, just whole britain. Many greetings from germany to this beautiful country.
@@stavrosmayakofsky1915 And what do you know about England, what exactly... I assume you don't know much about your homeland...
For the love of god don’t try to come here again
Ah Jesus what's so great about Britain it's rainy, it's miserable, the governments a mess and most importantly me favourite pub has stopped serving my favourite drink. What is the point, I'd move elsewhere if American was any better and everything in Australia didn't want to kill ya

Sean Beane is an underrated actor.
Sharpe is what being a real soldier is all about.
Shooting 3 rounds a minute in any weather?
You know who was an underrated actor...Pete Postlethwaite, the guy who played Hawkswell
@@victorwagner2423 Now that's soldiering.
Won the respect of his chosen men by fighting next to them and not abandoning them. And always listened to them, when they had ideas or issues. Richard Sharpe, rose from ranks to be one of their best officers and never asked his men to do something that he wasnt willing to do himself.
@@DrSho, yeh
This US/UK bickering pains me when all I've come here for is to enjoy the song. I'm an American serviceman but I simply love the sense of quiet pride and brotherhood in this piece. Love to my British cousins and brothers in arms, from an American who hasn't forgotten his history.
From a Warrant Officer in the Royal Air Force,I thank you,my American Ally.

There are some actors who are so convincing in a part that they make the character their own and anyone else coming along will have a heck of a lot to live up to . Such is Sean Beans portrayal of Sharpe , hes perfect .
Irreplacable in this role!
mo1912
The casting on “Sharpe” was perfect.
Cornwell changed the character Sharpe's hometown to match Bean's accent. An actor can't get much more of a compliment from an author than that.
No one can say bastard quite like him lol
Harper was perfect too
I lost my father to pancreatic cancer in 2012, I was 17. We shared a love of the Sharpe books and even more so the series with Sean Bean. When I miss him I still come back to listen to this when I'm struggling. Keep on soldiering through the shit that life throws at you and remember to call out a bastard when you find one!
So wholesome
Sorry for your loss
I love your approach. I share the feeling of huge loss and I had my dad until I was in my thirties. I love certain stories, movies and tv shows for the same reason that you mention. My dad was a medic in Vietnam and was a total cynic about war, just like Sharpe.
Take good care of yourself man. Your own kids will know their grandfather through you and he sounds like a man worth knowing.
Calling out bastards is always, always the way to go.
Stay strong lad, sorry for your loss
@@daveharvey8460Thank you mate.
For some reason listening to this song fills me with pride.
Everyone in the UK probably has an ancestor who went off to fight in the Napoleonic Wars (or War of the Austrian Succession, which is what the original of this song was written about). History isn't detached from us.......all of our families took part in it.
+curt I managed to trace my line back far enough to find a redcoat in the USA.

***** The Royal Highland Regiment is from the UK.
***** Ahhhh, okay, now I get you.
I have been captivated by Wellington’s campaigns against Napoleons armies since I was a teenager (I’m 78 ) I first became enthralled by him when I found a book that had his letters to his bosses? back at the war office. They were wonderfully acerbic and to the point. I’m surprised that he kept his job, Try as I may, I can’t find even one ancestor who fought for British in that war. They were all already in the US and fighting against the kings forces if they fought at all.I do have one who was a Loyalist in Virginia during the Revolution.but most were fighting for the US during that time.
I’m an 83 year old 7th generation American but I love the Rifles. I want “Over the Hills” played at my funeral.:)

"Then came the sound feared from Lisbon to Moscow: A British Volley." - Shapre's Gold
One of my favourite of the books! And the best quote
Did the Russians even fight the British before the Crimean War?
@@MadOrse Don't think so. Cornwall was probably thinking that the French armies dominated Europe between Lisbon and Moscow.
I used to watch Sharpe with my Gran, I have fond memories of sitting on the rug in front of the fire watching Sean Bean kill the French.

I have the same memory but on a sofa with hot chocolate.
I used to watch it after coming home from Army Cadets, still dressed in my uniform, lolz...with my dinner, hehehe
I remember going completely bananas with six hundred other members of the Royal Signals stood watching the one old Bush telly we had in the NAAFI at Celle in 1995 when Dick Sharpe shouts "Outside. NOW!!!". On this, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, I would like to suggest you all watch the last five minutes of "Blackadder Goes Forth" episode, "Goodbyee". Have some handkerchiefs ready, for you will need them.
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them".
May your God keep you and be with you, always.
where abouts is celle? never been there, I dont think...
Adam Welton yep, I can just imagine everyone shitting themselves at first, then realising it was dick sharpe talking, and not one of the seargeants on barracks, lolz...
This makes me proud to be an Irishman, in the context of our Union with Britain to create together the wonder that was the United Kingdom and Her Empire. We fought and owned her equally, and we can rejoice in patriotism at that.

Halifax´s finest.
As a Dane I'll say this. The Helmand province under French command was swimming in bribes. When UK moved in and we subsequently came under British Task Force Helmand all hell broke lose. Why? Because unlike the frogs, Britain had no intention of giving money away to the enemy. They're some of the most professional soldiers I've ever served alongside with.
Interesting.
Suppose that the UK forces just chose to pay the Taliban in hot lead and ordinance instead...

Hi to all who love this series as I do. Indeed I guess I am a wounded warrior, as sadly had to have my right foot and part of my leg amputated following a freak accident involving hydraulics on the digger ...
Anyhow , I somehow thought of this series and started to watch it again. Yes it's acting but , as a man watching it , you can but admire the bravery and courage of the men who once fought in the armies of England and France. As you watch it again, and again, you'll see the lilt of Irish humour coming through with Harper... And indeed it's most like the Irish I once knew , who sadly have passed into the next realm
AH, SURE IT COULD BE WORSE SIR.... WE COULD BE WITHOUT THE TAE.

I was in 2rgj in belfast palace barracks in 1995. We had just arrived, r coy and the camp was top heavy with 2 para. I remember walking into the naafi with Sharpe playing on tv. Some paras started getting mouthy about our regiment and Sharpe. Whst followed was a 300 + squaddie brawl which ended with some poor para loosing his spleen. Needless to say the paras didnt get mouthy again. Great days, tough men and great regiment. Swift and bold
2 RGJ, previously 3 RGJ, previously The Rifle Brigade, previously the 95th Rifles are the direct descendants of Sharpes famous regiment. (Even though Sharpe was a fictional character ) the way that the 95th performed in the Peninsula War, and later at Waterloo will long remain a source of immense pride to green jackets who followed. Black and green the finest colours ever seen!
I don't understand that accent
Having lived in Belfast all of my 68 years I can truthfully say that the paras were the scum of the earth. Their actions in Ballymurphy and Derry led to PIRA getting lots more recruits, which, in turn, led to the deaths of many British soldiers. Look up what they did to Majella O'Hare, a 12 year-old girl murdered on her way to church.

As an American with Scots Irish ancestry, I am here to listen and watch a video of a series of books and movies I have enjoyed since I was a child. I learned this tune from my great grandmother who sang it to me.
When the fight is on, you fight for the one that is on the left of you and the right. British, Welsh, Scots, Irish, and Ameicans we are cousins. Strong roots give to strong history.
James,I agree with you.Let's just sit back and enjoy the song without worrying about any supposed international rivalry.
Canadians, New Zealanders and Australians too!
DimetriKhan mainly Canadians New Zealanders and the Aussies, US has so many immigrants for all over its hard to say we have blood ties
Ulster Scots*
we are all the same. history took a different path but we are all the same people
what sharpe represented for me was some of the positive aspects of the warrior archetype which we all have. He served the king with great honor, fierce determination in the face of death. He also showed immense compassion at times and wasn't a warmonger or imperialist.
And got all the hot girls
He ain’t the murdering type of officer
Nothing wrong with imperialists. Wouldn’t have anything to fight for in Sharpe without em.

A haunting English lament to join its equally romantic sister, 'Greensleeves'. How fortunate we are in these green and sceptered isles, what rich musical bounty comes from Irish, Scottish, Welsh and English voices - truly inspired!
I'm French, and you have just (well 6 years ago) taught me a word. Your phrase sounds awesome.
I know this is a 7 year old comment, but quite right. Gotta give it up to the Isles, some of the most beautiful music has come from them. The Brits sure are a theatrical bunch.
I am of part Swedish and part Tunisian ancestry, so yeah, nothing British about me at all. But I started watching this series, Master and Commander and Hornblower many years ago when I was little, and I love it so much. Of all history, the British/English history is the most interesting, its number one for me. I really love the British/English history especially during the Napoleonic times, but also during the Renaissance and the 17th and 18th century. The Red Coats, the gentlemen officers, the nobles, the British Royal Navy, everything about it is so damn cool, I love it, and I love history. I would love to visit London in the future. Thank you for this wonderful series!
Only recently started watching sharpe. One of my favourite shows now.
It's been awhile, but I seem to remember Horatio Hornblower being pretty good too.
Murray Peterson
same general time period, the Napoleanic wars... in fact, Sharpe was originally portrayed as a sailor, before becoming the Richard Sharpe of the 95th Regiment of Foot "Chosen men" that we love today.
MrLupercal
would love to see a mini-series based on entire collection of Patrick O''Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series...great reading. The Master and Commander film, while excellent, is just a snapshot of the story. Heck, a similar effort for Cornwell's "Saxon" series might play well with the interest in historical fiction as witnessed in the success of Outlander.
read the books after
Have only read one, out of sequence, excellent. I can attest that Cornwell's Saxon Series is amazing!
I'm going to watch Sharpe again.
Im watching there entire seris again haha
i just did after a long time and now i'm gonna read the books again
May some one can advose where to look for full series of sharp movies can find any desent versions
@@juliusrumbutis5623 Nope. The series was terrible full of terrible acting, not least from old Sharpie
@@sodd1000 what you think you think i was not asking what you think i was asking where i can find its series to watch man
John Tam has such a beautiful voice!!
Lucky enough to be related to him 😊
I could listen to this for hours.
My dad introduced me to this series when I was a teen, opened up my thirst for knowledge about the Peninsular War and Napoleonic warfare. Still haven’t quite made the jump into the miniatures for that era yet.
Same
how can people NOT like this British song ...Long the Empire
Long LIve Baby George
love the song, but the royals can sod off, stop your worship of a bloody baby, to them your just a pleb, they're the biggest scroungers in Britain, and they're better than you and I just because they came out of the right legs at the right time, the crown is stolen and the land they have is stolen from us! wake up for F sake! stop the worship of your German betters! Abolish monarchy!
heres a better idea, why don't you piss off? (;
Jq1066q do WE agree that the song is great?
I loved watching Sean Bean in Sharpe as he worked his way up through the ranks to make it to Major,he put the other officers in their place who bought their way into the army,a true soldier.Loved this programme and this theme tune too.
two more episodes were released in the 2010s, he ends up a Colonel!
Just what I was gonna say
Then fall in lads behind the drum, colours blazing like sun, along the road to come what may, over the hills and far away.
Very important words given the historic vote to leave the EU. Everyone fall in behind our flag and our country and we'll face our future come what may, together.
yes.
RedDeadBret Such misty eyed nationalistic crap.
sam h What part of what I said was nationalistic?
Because I think the majority of people would symbolize it as patriotic.
a lot of Remainians hate nationalism and patriotism and would rather be governed by the faceless elitist bureaucratic undemocratic political class.
Suilven Mountain Those are just a bunch of buzzwords which don't mean anything in the real world. And aye I do hate nationalism, it's vile and destructive.
2 million views, makes me proud to be British!
What's that got to do with it??
Love Forever well he said it makes him proud to be British. I didn't mean it in a rude way I was actually curious if this was a British military song or not.
The tune is an old Scottish folk song which has had various words put to it over the years. These words were written in the 1990s by a folk musician and actor John Tams who appeared in the Sharpe TV series. I think as few military units have 'adopted it' in recent times.
It is a British military song that has been through a number of iterations. The earliest is I think from the war of the Spanish Succession where the lyrics mention the Duke of Marlborough and Queen Anne commands and we obey, rather than King George.
Hi... could you please elaborate on your question, thanks
Long before he tried to steal a National Treasure and wrest away the ring of power from Frodo, this was my introduction to Sean Bean. I fell in love with the character of Sharpe and so did the men he lead. I hope some of you have the time to watch these episodes.
It's also the only thing Sean Bean has ever done in which he doesn't die (although I think Sharpe died in the end. I dont know, I'm only on the second book! :P)
One does not simply kill Sharpe, one does simply get killed by Sharpe.
Lucas De Jong Yeah, for forty shillings on the drum.
MusketWalrus Not quite true. There may be other films as well (somewhere) but he did survive to the end of 'Troy' as Odysseus.

You can see my name is James which is very rare in Denmark, my Scottish father named me that. I also have a quite Scottish accent whenever I speak English.
I do notice this undermines my original comment but I'm still a Danish citizen and it's my first language :')
And love to denmark from Britain
I actually got teared up when the last show ended; I just loved the series and still working my way through the books
This song has so many memories. From my own military service to times with my dad.....🇬🇧⚔🖤🤙
my English friend showed me this show with the line that sean bean doesn't die! and also I love this show and this song it's beautiful all you arguing about empires just listen to the words these aren't the words of emperors and kings these are the words of the lowly soldiers who are just obeying and I just love the line "then fall in lads behind the drum with colors blazing like the sun along the road to come what may over the hills and far away" and my fellow Americans stop whining about our revolution and the bad things of their empire our hands are not that clean in our own land

One of the best series that have ever existed!
Always gets stuck in your head after each Sharpe episode.
My father and I used to sit and watch Sharpe all day! It reminded us on how we used to do this! We also meet Sean bean! At a battle! Sadly, my father passed away 30/06/2017 😇 this was his funeral song, best send off. ❤
Bless your father...
You met Sean Bean at a battle ? Napoleonic reenactment ?
This is a traditional English folk song. The lyrics for this version were written by John Tams, who played Daniel Hagman in the series, and this is his recording of the song. He wrote other verses that don't appear in this version, but were used in different episodes of the show.
Hagman was my favourite character in the show, and I loved the scenes where he sang.
I don't believe there could have been a better song to personify the Sharpe stories. Loved the entire series. It showed the whole process of growing up and maturing as a great soldier and a man. That goes for the entire core cast.
Ah this song transports me to the era when White men used to be wolves, brave and strong and ruled the waves, now we have become whipped dogs. It is good that our ancestors could not see us or they would spit on our cowardice and how far we have fallen.
I think that you are a fool.

Perhaps you are wrong.

"Queen Anne Commands..." It's older than you think....
one of the best renditions of this fine old marching song!
Watched Sharpe when I was 16, pretty important period of my life as it is for most people. Absolutely loved it, the song takes me right back to that time.

I have very fond memories of watching Sharpe with my Dad and Grandad. Sadly the latter isn't with us anymore. He left me all the novels by Cornwall and had this played at his funeral (also in the army) and come back to this video every now and then and smile thinking of him 😊

This song has stayed with me since I was a kid makes me think of all the boys that were shipped out fighting for England and there brothers brave lads and even now are boys are true heroes god bless.
Sharpe made Hornblower look like a bloody sea scout!!
Haha yes he did!
Have you read any of the books?
Sal sean I've read every Sharpe book

No, the Hornblower novels.
I listened to them on cd, they were good, but the Sharpe books showed more of the actual war and battles than the Hornblower books did
Always brings a tear to my eye. Makes me think of my Grandpa.
I like how men do man things best. They make life look like it's all a big adventure. I would love to have been in Sharpe's army. Go Bean!

I love Sharpe, It makes up for all the times where Sean Bean dies in most of his other roles!
Sharpe; not only are they good movies with everything in them, but there's one series where Sean Bean isn't getting killed (thought it is not without a lack of trying!)
Canonically he died apparently

I honestly have no idea how myself as a young black dude ended up getting invested in this series back when it dropped, I can't remember most of what I watched to this day, save for how cool Sharpe seemed, a character named "Obediah"(?) and this wonderful haunting theme song.
Obediah is Hebrew. Most names at that time were biblical.
Sean Bean’s opening recital is spot on..... as is the rest of the performance... the video and song captures the ethos of soldiering exquisitely.
The thing about imperialism is that everyone was doing it. England just happened to be the best at it
*Britain.
***** As I understand it we are living in the 21st century not the 19th. Furthermore they didn't mean the same thing-they never have-they were just used interchangeably.
***** England and Britain have never, ever, ever, at any point in history meant the same thing.
***** Enlighten me.
curt the oxford history of england is a history of britain more properly is the one QI trotted out when the subject came up on i would guess an episode of the E series, the "british" empire was that of the crown in london, im a proud englishman and briton but equality with edinburgh and dublin wasnt something london ever practised, as far as our rulers were concerned the scots irish and welsh were the same as the peoples of india or the zulus of southern africa, that is inferior and to be used and abused for the greater good, ofc they thought much the same of anyone english outside their narrow social class but an englishman was slightly better in their eyes and numerous histories attest to that, theirs a few reasons scotland rose up under bonnie prince charlie and religion was one but scottish disatisfaction with being ruled from london likely contributed, you see the fruits of it today in the UK with wales northern ireland and scotland having some form of home rule and scotland looking like itll possibly leave the union
So, another British show I have not seen. I do believe I will have a Sharpe marathon this weekend. Thank you from the other side of the pond.
If you watch Sharpe, you will realise our time is over but by golly, it was great whilst it lasted

The war of 1812, when the USA invaded Canada. The Local British Garrison stopped the Invasion but were depleted. The Empire struck Back and landed 5000 Regular Troops from the Potomac river. They Marched on Washington DC. They were meet in the field by the American Army commanded by the US President, The British regulars swept away the American army before it in one day of Fighting, and Marched on Washington. the captured Washington DC and Sacked and Burnt the White House. They occupied Washington for 18 Months before a Peace Treaty was signed.
@@Tagit570
It most certainly was the intention of the USA to kick out the British and annex Canada. Madison thought it would be an easy invasion and Jefferson thought that the USA had only to march north to win. They were both imbeciles.
Population of the USA in 1812 was about 8 million. Canadian population perhaps 500k.
British forces only looked to defend Canadian soil as most of its forces were used up in attaining its primary goal - defeating Napoleonic France.
The 1812 War made Canada a nation, and bankrupted France. Two excellent outcomes.
The USA would go on to kill its own in their murderous civil war, annex the remainder of North America and become the most powerful country in world history. Great Britain would rule the globe for nearly a hundred years before declining sharply and becoming a near non entity. Shame for us Brits, but then, nothing lasts for ever.
Mark Cynic
Canadian in Central Ontario,
Pierre Burton wrote a history of the War of 1812 from the Canadian perspective. And I have visited the battle fields on Canadian soil, and your right. The Americans thought it would be a walk through the forest, and the settlers would welcome them with open arms... it was a motley crew of regulars, American United Empire Loyalists, Escaped American Slaves, French, Indian, and settlers that met them... The Americans made a two pronged attack (one on what is now Kingston, and the other at Niagara on The Lake) and sadly, lost a lot of men on the march to illness... those that made it to the battles didn't have the heart they started with... The attack on Canada was a political act, not a militarily significant move... but it galvanized the people of what was then Quebec and Ontario to become more united... and coloured Canadian feelings regarding the USA for the better part of the Century and led to the 1867 act of confederation and later the trans continental railroad...
to this day, even though we are generally on good terms with our American cousins, we are leery of the American Government's intentions...
@@davidcadman4468
Yes, indeed. Those Americans who marched north were told that Canadians would view them as their saviours from British rule, this failed to materialise, the warm welcome and food supplies were not forthcoming. Hungry and disillusioned men do not make for a good fighting force.
I would suppose the idea was to unite the whole north American continent so that any enemy nation could only invade - at that time - by sea.
This has got to be one of the single dumbest comments I've ever had the displeasure of reading. First off, the British troops were not from the Potomac river. They were veterans from the Duke of Wellington's Peninsular army and were sent to attack settlements on the Potomac. Second, President Madison was not in command of the army at Bladensberg, Brigadier William Winder was. Third, the British didn't occupy Washington for 18 months, they were driven out after 26 hours after capturing the city, by a hurricane and went on to be defeated at the Battle of Baltimore, where the British commander, Major-General Robert Ross, would be killed and the Battle of New Orleans, where the newly promoted British commander, Major General Sir Edward Michael Pakenham, brother in law to the Duke of Wellington, would also be killed.
And then the Americans massacred the British outside New Orleans and stoped their southern advance. The war of 1812 was a draw, but it did help to unify the American people
I'm American and I must say I wish I was a Brit
From what I can gather, after Brexit, it's not so great to be there right now either.
I'm also American, and I married a cute Brit! :) Now living in London, and it's brilliant. Come on over!

I am watching an old British series " Warship " ( 1973 - 77 ) about a modern British Frigate . They had a two part episode that featured the actor who played the infamous Col. Simmons ! He is a young British Marine Lt. and kills a Swedish officer during a joint British Swedish Operation . I am now looking at all the actors and found the guy who played the crown prince George in the same series ! Note * The guy playing the Crown Prince also played a part of a British Officer in Portugal . Keep your powder dry and your eyes open and your weapon clean ! Remember boys " Three shots a minute "
