    This video will be a lot of help to me. I got a huge Hope Philodendron over a decade ago and have managed to keep it alive through hot summers, dry winters and root rot. I added some potting soil last summer and have been fighting for its life ever since. I'm going to use your technique for getting rid of the old soil next summer and hope it does the trick. Thanks for the demonstration. One minor criticism: it sounds like you end the word 'philodendron' with an em sound in the video. The name comes from 2 Greek words, philo for love and dendron for tree. Please put the en sound on the end of the name in future videos. Thanks.

    There is a huge one in my mom's backyard that has been ignored. It shot off another side plant and I need to do something to this giant! Never knew it could grow inside. I will look at seeing about propagating before I cut the twin.

    I got a cutting from my aunts very old plant a year ago, i have had to repot it THREE times in the last year, it has a huge burst of growth every time I repot it, then it stops growing and looks sad once the roots fill the pot so much that it dries out too fast. About to repot from a ten inch pot to a 14 inch pot... I am going to give it a top dressing too so it stays moist longer. Your plant is going to love the repotting!

      They do love fresh soil! I have had many others before and they were like that. This one just kept growing like crazy without repotting so i let it go to see how long it would stay happy... about 3 years!... which is bad, should repot our plants far more often, but i was just curious. lol... mine already has a new leaf shooting out and it has only been a week since i repotted it. Awesome plants!

    There is literally five of these growing on some old pine tree logs uphill from my house and they are huge. There is also one growing on an old wooden ladder in the yard. Never knew these were in demand like that. And they aren't growing in soil. Just attached to the logs and ladder amazing. I'm in the caribbean btw.

    I inherited a 32 year old Philodendron bipinnatifidum that has been in the same pot the whole time. Gentle pruning and Milorganite made the green color POP. It’s doing great. Be prepared for a commitment with this plant but it’s super easy to care for.

    I just got a massive philodendron selloum from an elderly lady for $5! It’s been around for three generations, crazy right?! She’s in a huge pot and I think she has a lot of dead roots. What’s the best way to repot such a huge beast!? 😂😂 I wish I could post pictures. It’s huge!!

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 років тому +2

      Hello! I would suggest unpotting the plant and trimming out the dead roots and repotting it into some fresh soil that drains well but holds onto some moisture. Keeping it well watered after the repot will get it off to a good start and adding a starter fertilizer will help also. :)

I have to admit that, after watching one of your older videos, I went out to our driveway and took a bunch of cutting from a philodendron plant the previous owner planted in the narrow strip of ground next to the driveway. I have a inherited one. I just lop off the stem and pot it as a cutting. Sometimes the stem doesn't make it though. It grows arial roots that makes this a little easier. I'm up to three now but I've given a lot of them away as gifts over the years.

    • @adamcook1578

      It looks like there are some offsets at 5:26, near the base. Maybe seperate those, otherwise I would think to do a cane cutting. Cut about 6 inches below the top of the plant, then divide this piece in two. The parent plant will branch and grow new shoots while the cuttings will root.

      I absolutely agree, they are among the best house plants in my opinion...aside from the massive sizes they can reach. Have you tried lowes and home depot? They usually get them in fairly frequently, but there is a tropical plant drought happening with the nursery biz so maybe they aren't as common this year.

      That's crazy! Several weeks ago i was at lowes or home depot, i don't remember which, and they had 4 pallets full of them, but they were tiny little guys in 3 gallon pots. It's always when we want to find something that we can't! I know bc of the hurricane and cold in Florida last winter that there is a supply issue with a lot of tropicals, and probably wont be back to normal for a few years, but i figured the philodendrons would be the plants that the growers would be pushing out like crazy to compensate. Weird!

      Hi david! They are considered non-climbing philodendrons, and typically grow a trunk like stem which supports the plant. I do feel like I've seen pictures of them climbing though. Perhaps it was just the angles the pictures were taken at? Typically indoors if they are falling and crawling you can just put a sturdy stake in the pot and tie them up to it.

      If it's growing well for you and it has been for years then you're not doing anything wrong. If it ain't broke don't fix it! ... the longer stems is usually just the plant reaching for light. Increasing the light can help out with that.

      This year has been odd, likely because of the hurricane and cold in florida, a lot of common plants are not out at the nurseries like they usually are. I have had this one for years, but lowes and home depot usually has them, or they used to i should say. Next year should hopefully be better. Fingers crossed!

    putting stones at the bottom of the pot doesnt help water drain through, the potting mix will still wick up and become saturated but the rocks will lift that saturated zone higher up the pot, some scientific name for i cant remember

    Hi there! May I ask if you've experienced yellowing tips on your Philodendron? If so, what would you attribute it to? I'm known to severely underwater plants and I wonder if that could be the cause of my yellowing tips and sometimes whole leaves? Thank you so much for the video and help! :)

    I repotted a huge split leaf and today she’s drooping. She’s huge but dropping wasn’t what she did before. We split her 3 ways , she was very large! I need help, I inherited her and I do love her but I don’t know what to do. It was about 45 degrees outside last night, is that bad? I was told no. I have put her back inside for now. I watered her today too.

    Hi, If my Philodendron B turns brown then the leaves go soggy, does that mean that there is not enough drainage in my pot? I have it sitting in a pot with only one drainage hole.

    • @TropicalPlantParty

      If they go soggy then that could very well be poor drainage.

      You can make additional holes. Also, try to empty the plate, that collects water underneath, regularly.

    Hi! I just purchased this one on clearance (2 gallon pot)for $2 at Lowe's. The stems are seriously droopy. I had to repot it because there was some root rot which I was able to remove and there were winged ants and some worms in the pot...eeww. Soaked it, removed all dead leaves, rotted roots and had to cut back the roots as well. Lost 2 of the babies. Finally got it all cleaned, in another pot and the stems are so droopy they just lay down(had to stake it in 3 spots). Since this is not a climber will the stems ever get strong enough to stand alone or will I need to wait until it grows a trunk for it to be strong enough? TIA for your input😊

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  4 роки тому

      Whoa that plant has really put you through it! What a mess! Sounds like you did a great job with staying on the issues and fixing it up. They should be able to support their leaves at any size. Usually droopy foliage is a sign of low light and/or over watering. Once they've drooped they might not stand back up, but all of the new foliage should do just fine. 🙂

    • @trewti

      @@TropicalPlantParty Thanks for the info. Yes, got quite a workout for $2😜 I hope it grows quickly. There are 7 really big stems and beautiful leaves. Sad they won't stand alone. Hopefully it grows quickly. Maybe I'll buy or make a trellis to hold it up in the meantime. I don't know if my skinny bamboo stakes will hold the weight that long.🤔 Either way...it was $2 if it works, great if not oh well. There will always be another rescue plant at Lowes😉! Love your channel by the way💚🌱

      Too funny. I also just picked up one for a buck at Lowe’s. I named him Bob (after the Lowe’s employee who marked it down). It’s in bad shape but I’m hopeful I can revive it after I do an insect inspection, pruning and repot it. It should be noted this plant is poisonous to both people and animals when ingested and its a ski. irritant. It’s amazing the extreme and constant lack of plant care at the many Lowes Garden Centers in Long Island NY... but thats a whole other story.

      @@kellykelly-fp1jg Nice! Good luck with Bob..lol. Sadly, mine started to rapidly decline despite my care and love. I put it outside hoping someone would have better luck. Within 30 minutes it disappeared. Hope it found a good home and thrives there. 💚🌱

      I watched a video where they farmed them. They literally had them planted in thick plastic bag about 2 -3 gallon size with lots of bark and miss and some soil. Then they would cut the top off just below the roots below lime the growth node leaving some aerial roots also they would then plant that in same type of bag ,then re-pot what was left below where they cut and it would grow new plant and plant cutting would grow just fine. I thought it was Awesome !! . I think I was called Happy farmers on UA-cam "maybe " it was happy something . Mine is about 8x5ft. Planted in the ground outside in Close to Dallas Texas just south of there. Growing like crazy full sun all day. I just mulch it heavily in the winter. Good luck. I took a pup off of mine today.

    • @flexibledreamer7846
      @flexibledreamer7846 5 років тому +1

      I recently bought one from my local grocery store and had the same problem. As he said, this happens when the soil is too wet... it likely has fungus. Sprinkle some cinnamon on the leaves and soil. Let the soil dry out. I let the soil dry out and treated with Bonnide anti fungal spray. I continue to allow it to dry in between watering. I water once per week (depending on soil dryness). It’s recovered nicely.

      It's a Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum. The plant was reclassified after this video was made. I can see how the immature leaves may resemble a Xanadu, but it's been many years and I can assure you as this plant has grown and matured, it's a bipinnatifidum. Drastic size difference between the two different plants.
