samyb786 I knew he would be a hit. What a legend. Totally outclassed everyone else at the BBC. Andy Roddick is here to stay at the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon.
Federer is such a class act , Roddick probably suffered one of the toughest loses in tennis in Wimbledon 2009, i can't even imagine what was going through his mind when that match ended ....
Probably the same that went through Federers head when he lost Wimbledon in 2019 against Djokovic. Third consecutive final he lost against him there. The same as Roddick, third time against Federer. And the interesting thing is, look at the matchpoint 2009 how Roddick mishits the ball and then 2019 how Federer mishits the ball. ( you really should watch it to know what i mean) And both the matches are their third matches. What goes around comes around... not in a disrecpectful way but life has it's own irony
It's evident that Andy is still feeling the Wimbledon loss. That match was played at such a high level, it was so intense. It's always cool to see former competitors sitting down for a 1-on-1; there's a mutual respect that comes through, as opposed to when a pure journalist interviews an athlete
@@eshan4093 Even though Nole won it, you can't take away how crazy it is to be almost 38 and reach a freakin' Grand Slam final (and besides, Roger had to defeat none other than Rafa Nadal in the semi-finals)
When people think about him winning they seem to forget he has a back problem. Roger is not the type to complain about injury so I think it must be more serious than he let on. The pain he must have gone through to win the matches... Nadal is known for being tough but don't underestimate Roger's determination, strength and stamina.
and then, after this interview, he returned at world n.2, he won 5 titles in a year, he reached a final in Wimbledon, lot of finals in masters, the London Final, he won his first world cup, he broke many other records and he plays today like he's 20 years old. I just don't know.. He's such an incredible warrior, he's without any doubt the greatest tennis player of all time
This is a very touching interview, especially because it is between Roddick and Federer. He interviews Federer briefly about what it takes, what was his inspiration and how will he continue to compete against the tennis world as he continues to age. Roddick gets right to the point and clears ambiguities of the man people might've had and also shows Federer's respect for other players. I really would have loved it if Roddick won Wimby '09. He really did deserve it that year and he is amongst the most loved of all tennis players. The game is not the same without Andy, but this is just how the sport of tennis is, point by point. I hope to see more of Andy's involvement in tennis even if he's not competing.
Well, I'm glad Federer won it, but I wish Roddick could have won Wimby at some point (not at Fed's expense). I regret not being more of a fan of Roddick's in his earlier years. He seems like a classy and thoughtful guy these days.
Let's not beat around the bush here. Federer didn't play well in that 2009 final and still won. But roddick played well and lost, the gap in quality with those two was immense. What Federer did in the locker room was a sign of a true gentleman, no matter what anybody says, Federer is a great humble sportsman
Agree. That's why he is voted by his own peers, year after year for the sportsmanship award. His fellow players respect what he has achieved but also the sportsman that he is. Even when he is being outplayed he takes his beating like a man and doesn't resort to these antics like taking medical timeouts etc.
didn't Fed have like 40 aces or something in that game? i agree that fed definitely wasn't at his best and he is a better player than Roddick...but c'mon he still put up a great performance
@@fluffynoses Andy had to play at his absolute maximum to make the match "That" close. Andy didn't get broken until literally the final set/point. His serve in that match was one of the greatest of all time.
Watching this after his retirement. People were talking about his retirement around this time and he gave us 8 more years of dedication and passion. And 3 more slams and another run at no1 on top of all that.
gotta love Roddick handling things in life now especially with interviewing and talking the man who had his number and stood in his way of maybe 10 slams. people just look at the Finals Roddick lost but Roddick also a few semi-finals against federer too.
we love u Roger, Please be confident enough to be number 1 again..We know you can do it.Good Luck on ur career!!! play 2 more years, we'll gonna miss u if u retire.. GOD BLESS U
Brett S I feel as though Andy’s demons has less to do with being jealous of Roger’s brilliance and more with feelings of incompetence when in the shadow of one of the GOATS. Djokovic will finish his career the GOAT, he will have beaten the grand slam record by then. Maybe 5 years from now at the latest.
Come on roger. Go on. You are the chosen one. Surely at least one more slam is up for grabs....You inspired me so much over the last 9 years...Keep rocking...Players come and go but legends like you will live for ever in the hearts of fans like me... One sun, one moon and there can ever be only one roger...
2013: Andy "Even the greatest deal with time and age..." Roger "I think it's gonna be defenitely more the mind and the body dictating how long I can play. But I mean if I take care of it, and have passion for it, and the results are still there, I think I'm gonna still playing for some time"
Thank you for remembering your coach. Please forgive him using the bad words. Mr. Federer, you are such a great tennis player and there are so many bright momenta ahead... Good luck
"I think I'm gonna play for some time" and win three more Grand Slams. I watched you on court winning your 101st title (Miami Open 2019). It was a shame that the following day's headlines were not "Tennis 101".
Love them both! Federer & Roddick! I miss Roddick! Miss his press conferences. Such a funny guy. A few funny bits in this interview too. Federer's soooo sweet. Just wanna pose for a pic with him. Hahaha! xx
Roger is very rational in interviews when he talks about his feature. He always says he still wants to win but in the tournaments it's clear that he can't concentrate and focus on important shots. Maybe he will find that motivation that he talks about. Anyway he is the greatest of all time.
I like Andy, but you all forget that even without Federer, he would have faced some very tough opponents in the finals. For example Hewitt at Wimbledon, Blake in New York, Gonzo in Australia (when the Chilean was at his absolute best), Nadal in Melbourne '09, etc. He would have won Wimbledon in 2003 and 2009 for sure though.
Just to quickly add: I remember watching this interview and thinking it was sad hearing he'd still try to be around for a while. I didn't want to see a childhood hero become a mortal. But I am writing this not long after an injured, 38-year-old Roger went all the way to the Australian Open Semis after saving SEVEN match points in the quarters and coming back to win in five sets. I know that one day, there won't be anything left. But part of me will ALWAYS believe in his ability to win.
Pretty ironic how in 2009 Federer got lucky at Wimbledon and won in a thriller but he didnt play better than Roddick, and ten years later in 2019 Djokovic got lucky and didnt play better than Federer and also won it in a thriller
Roddick is my favorite player of all time, but I am confused with his intro. He talks about Jordan and Woods and then asks Federer "i don't feel like that adjective is applied to you ... it's not all talent". Is he saying that Jordan and Woods was just talent and no hard work? I feel like all three athletes have talent and worked hard to get to the top positions in their respective games. Like I said I am a bit confused on what Andy is trying to say.
Roddick will grow into this interviewing thing. It's still a bit uncomfortable. Must be hard to find the middle ground between journalism and emotions if the story involves yourself. In my opinion he could have made it even less formal and more personal, if you know a person already, why not?
Going to be incredible, I do believe that Novak is above every player at the moment, but absolutely won't be surprised if Roger can bring the magic and get his 9th Wimbledon.
Andy Roddick: What would you rate as the proudest moment or accomplishment in your career? Roger Federer. Winning Wimbledon in two thousand ni.. I mean ummm
Andy is just saying that those athletes are so intense and willing to do anything to win, while it seems like Federer wins with such ease and does not elicit very much emotion on the court while playing.
1:14 Well, Andy, if someone explicitly wants your attention, then you start admiring that person for having a virtue, which you, unlike that person, never express by dragging someone's attention...
What do people reckon federer hardest loss to take in his carear. I think it was the us open 2009 loss in 5th set where del porto dominated federer after being too sets down. I reckon his back back losses to nadal in French open 2006-2008 and 2 loses to dhokovic at Wimbledon 2014 & 2015
Roger. I understand you get thousands of fan mails. Whether you get to read this or not, I just wanted to say that my 7 year old boy "Kailas" is a big, big admirer of you along with every one in our family. I was even forced to spray paint his bedroom with your pictures on the wall. I have asked him to write to Wimbledon Officials every year to see you one day. Hopefully his dream would come true one day.
They should get roddick to commentate for Wimbledon with the BBC. The guy is classy and funny at the same time.

True.
Nothing Djokovic would have done.

Federer is such a gentleman. Makes you really admire the way he plays and his sportsmanship.
It’s been nearly 5 years since this interview was done, and here Federer is at the age of 36 still winning majors. Unbelievable!
Make in 38 and in his 13th wimbledon final
