  • Edmunds special correspondent Elana Scherr gets the keys to the 2018 Ford Mustang EcoBoost. In this video, Elana talks about how the turbocharged four-cylinder Mustang fits in with the history of V6 and V8 Ford pony cars and takes a closer look at the entry-level Mustang's new 2018 interior and options.
Q: What's new on the 2018 Ford Mustang?
A: The digital dash offers a ton of customizations with a range of gauge designs and information display options. It's part of an overall improved interior that is brighter and more appealing than any previous versions of the sixth-generation Mustang. Another option that's well worth the money is the MagneRide suspension, which improves ride comfort and handling. The 10-speed automatic is also new, and it's well-matched to the EcoBoost engine, keeping the four-cylinder in its power range throughout various driving conditions. There are also some minor exterior design changes, including a slightly lower hood line.
Q: What kind of engines are offered on the 2018 Ford Mustang?
A: Your choices range from the 310-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder in the base model (2017 was the last year for the V6) to the 460-hp V8 in the GT. If you're really serious about performance, there's also the 526-hp high-revving flat-plane crank V8 in the Shelby GT350. While the four-cylinder can't compete with the V8 GT in a straight line, it's plenty peppy and fun to keep revved up around corners, plus it gets 21 mpg in city driving as opposed to 15 mpg for the GT.
Q: Which 2018 Ford Mustang has an independent rear suspension?
A: All of them, now! Ford first switched the Mustang to an independent rear suspension in 2015 with the sixth generation. After decades of solid rear axles, it made waves in the Mustang community. The latest version is the best-handling Mustang ever, with crisp, responsive turn-in and no body roll.
Q: Which 2018 Ford Mustang should I buy?
A: What interests you about the Mustang? If you want that real muscle-car rumble and effortless acceleration, the GT is your best bet. However, if you love the style and history of the Mustang, and want an economical daily driver that looks fast, is fun to drive and has good trunk space, see if the EcoBoost meets your needs. You can read our full review for a comprehensive breakdown of the different models.

I don't care for the review. The low RPM lag you're talking about is solved by digging deeper into the gas pedal. It downshifts, then goes! The price tag you're talking about at $40k relates to the options it has. The same exact features with the V8 is $50k. The Ecoboost is 32MPG on the highway, and the V8 is 26MPG. The cars serve 2 totally different price points and needs for their respective drivers. For me, I need the 32MPG for the large amount of highway driving that I do saving me $10 per fillup. When I get off the highway, I still get nice performance for "play" mode.

That car has a ton of options on it to be at 41K. My convertible with wheel and stripe package (I took off the stripes) Premium was only 39K. The twelve inch gauge display adds several thousand, as does the performance package. She should also do her research and would know she has the 3.55 rear end instead of the 3.31. Lot's of people that don't know how to drive complain about the eco boost Mustang. I love mine. Wish I could get anywhere close to 31 MPG though!

I find the car goes when I ask it to go. I bought an Ecoboost premium used for $20,000. It has the heated and cooled seats, large touch screen, fog lamps etc. It's a great daily driver. And if you like driving curves or autocross it's more balanced than the V8 so has a lighter front end and performs better in those conditions.

Agree 👍 I own a 2016 ecoboost mustang getting the 2018 this weekend and people who don't like the ecoboost don't understand how to drive the ecoboost properly there's a way to go through the gears so it knows when you want power or don't want so much power. I hear other people complain exactly like her just the same then other reviews love it see what I mean...

0-60 ratings for the Ecoboost are only 1 second longer than the GT. MPG close to 30 on the highway--something the V8 could only dream of. Same body design. Almost ten grand less than the GT. Cheaper to insure. Great option for someone wanting a Mustang but also not interested in payments approaching a mortgage and large checks to write to the insurance company.

My '16 hit 31 pure highway with the old six speed auto running 93 octane. The 10 speed should about match that. That's something that a lot of reviews don't mention, too. The Ecoboost thrives on 93. Fuel economy and power noticeably increase. Dyno measurements show as much as a 25 hp difference between 87 and 93 at the wheel.

I think Ford or the dealerships that loan these out for review purposely give them premium package cars so they're a little more impressive. Makes it more likely they'll get a favorable review than a bland base model. However, I just ordered a base model ecoboost with the 101A package from the factory. As you said, I can't find a single review on that trim level.

@@magooshoots I'm looking for a used 2018 but not having the premium package is a deal breaker for me. I'd even take a convertible (bleh) over a base hardtop model because the Apple Carplay system is so good it's a must and leather seats do make the car much more impressive. How you feel about the car is a huge part of the experience of owning it. Plus you get cool and heated seats, interior lighting, more speakers and an amp, pony projectors in the mirrors, heated mirrors, blind spot monitoring, backup sensors, LED fog lamps, a bit of spoiler, aluminum door handles. It's a lot of small things but a lot of them that the car feels incomplete without.
The performance package, 8'' tachometer screen, magneride suspension, and the safety package, which includes adapative cruise control instead of standard, and such as a heated wheel and lane keeping are all really nice, but not break the bank nice. Those are cool options but not necessary. I plan to pay $900 for the cluster panel when I get mines and just install it. Cheaper than getting the performance package to add it, by the way you also need the PP to option magneride. Those things add multiple thousands, but the premium package is a must unless you want your car's interior to look like its from the 90s.
I do wish I could get all the options, they're all impressive tbh, but so much money on top that It's hard to find a used spec'd out model.

The ONLY problem with the Ecoboost Mustang is that we've become spoiled by massive horsepower and torque numbers. It's a stigma in the mind of every pony car buyer that they HAVE to have the V8. Honestly, there was a time between 1972 and the late 90s that Mustang GT drivers would have killed to have the power numbers that this Ecoboost has. That said, if you want to save money on gas and insurance, go for the Ecoboost. Price wise, as I type this out (December 2018) I can find dealer closeouts and get a new 2018 GT for $30k. BTW, get Car and Driver has far more impressive testing numbers for the Ecoboost then shown here.

Spenser Hawk Hear, hear! I remember when the gas crisis of the late 70s basically neutered all of the muscle and pony cars - remember the Mustang II? I’m very happy to own a 6-speed manual transmission 2018 Mustang ecoboost. I get to decide which gear I need to be in, when I need or want to be in that gear. With 91 octane (don’t have 93 in SoCal), you get all of the advertised torque feel, and with even a little spirited driving (it’s my daily driver, but on weekends...) I have very little problem hitting 28+ mpg with mostly highway driving. On my average week, I get somewhere between 26-28 mpg driving my daily commute (40 miles to and from home). I used to fill up with 89, but since I usually fill up weekly at the 10-12 gallon mark I decided it was worth the extra $1-1.20 a week to squeeze out as much performance as I can.
My car only has an aftermarket exhaust (custom made, with 2.5” piping replacing the 2.25” piping, deleted resonator swapped with MagnaFlow #12268 1 in/2 out muffler, straight piped to 4” custom tips), and a K&N drop in filter. No tune yet, as the car is still under warranty and I don’t want to buy the Ford performance option just yet. I may do so in the future, but do not like the fact that though you keep the 3yr/3600 mi engine warranty, you lose the 6 yr/60,000 mi power train warranty.

Very interesting review, Elana. I recently considered the exact model you tested and I'm the sort of driver you suggested it would appeal to. I wanted a car that was suited for early Sunday morning drives on the mountain roads here in the Pacific NW. At the same time, I needed a car that would accommodate a large dog and small teenage daughter in the back seat along with my wife in the passenger seat. (Sorry, Miata) I wouldn't have considered the Mustang had it not been for the enthusiasm of my daughter who hoped to inherit it in another couple of years when she starts driving. What I didn't need (or want) was a five liter V8 with the attendant fuel inefficiency.
All in all, I was impressed. The Mustang was quick and with the performance package it handled very well. I don't have to commute every day so the negatives you noted about driving in urban traffic didn't matter that much. Despite the positives, however, I found that the GTI was a better match for my priorities so my daughter, despite her protests, will have to accommodate herself to waiting a while to get a Mustang.

That $41k price is not at all realistic to what they actually sell for. '18 Ecoboost Mustangs Premiums with the Performance pack and digital dash were selling for $27,500 since January of this year. I know because I was shopping for one and bought my Focus ST instead (for $19k out the door, Ford never sells at sticker). And like you mentioned, you shouldn't be getting all those options on an Ecoboost anyway. You can either get a base model with the Performance pack and manual transmission for $23k or a Premium with the 10 speed for $26k. That covers either the customers that want a RWD tuner car or those that want a nice comfortable and stylish daily driver/weekend cruiser.
At those prices and those trim levels I feel like the Ecoboost equates to the very first generation of Mustangs more than any other Pony cars that have been sold since the 80's. People forget that the original Mustang was a tiny, affordable, lightly optioned cruiser with good looks and just enough power to be fun. That's exactly what you get from a new Ecoboost and at the prices that they actually sell for nearly anyone with the credit for a new car can afford one. Only reason I didn't get one is because I fell in love with the '18 GT Premium with Magnaride/10 speed SO much that I knew I had to go extra cheap this round so I could save up and own one in 3 years. It was a very hard decision and 2021 can't get here soon enough.

There was a time when I would not even look at a car with an automatic, but starting with the six speed auto trans and manual shift modes I've been forced to change my thinking some based on the fact that most people just can not shift a manual shifter faster than most of the automatics found in the sportier version of vehicles today. I've not much experience with the 10 speed yet. I've just purchased a 2019 ecoboost with the 10 speed, performance package with magneride, but not yet broken in. I considered a GT this time around but after test driving both I felt that the ecoboost was a better handling vehicle on the mountain and winding roads here in east tennessee. That extra 200 pounds or so up front in the GT got me into understeer conditions a lot quicker then with my 2017 ecoboost on a stretch of winding road I drive most every day.
The one thing I've experienced with the six speed auto on my ford explorer sport and the 2017 mustang ecoboost is that it takes as much as 4,000 to 5,000 miles for these transmission to shift the way I expected them to at the start. Over time the shifts seem to get quicker, both upshifting and down shifting using the paddle shifters. To this point I'm finding that the 10 speed may be the same as the others. I'm seeing a lot of mixed reviews on the 10 speed in the ecoboost, but most of those were new car reviews. I see less complaints in the reviews of vehicles that obviously have been on the road awhile. Whether that is the people getting used to the transmission or the 10 speed just going through it's own break-in period, or both, I really don't know from just reading and watching the reviews. I'm curious if any of you out there have experienced the same thing. My daughter has had much the same experience with her Camaro, so feedback on any make and model is fine with me.
As far as this review goes, I get the feeling that maybe she just finished the review of an $80,000 plus BMW or Benz. It scares me that any reviewer would not want a performance package on a mustang. If that car's option did not include the magneride with the performance package then it will definitely give you a bumpy ride, but no matter what she says, the ecoboost is a performance car. Just because it does not have a V8 under the hood does not cause it to be otherwise. Wonder if she thinks the Ford GT is not a performance vehicle. It only has a V6 in it and only 647 HP and 550 ft lbs of torque. It took me a good 4 days of solid driving of my 2017 to get used to the handling and limitations on various road surfaces. I initially bought it because of its better gas mileage and cheaper insurance, but after only a couple of days I was in love with that thing. I'm not sure it was quicker than my ford explorer sport, but the handling was markedly better than even the SVT I had several years ago.
It also cracks me up that her and a few others complain about plastic components instead of metal. This is not the 1950s or1960s anymore. Plastics of today are very durable and if you have to start tearing into the dash or moldings in other parts of the vehicle to get to hidden components, that plastic is your friend. You can do it, replace everything and it all looks the same afterwards.
Yea, it's long. Sorry. I'm old and stupid

She is clueless, comparing with a miata; not in the same category!
Complaining because the suspension is too sporty; get a cushy car not a sports car...
The 2.3 lighter better handing mustang is a sports car and the heavier v8 is a muscle car; love having the choice again like when I had the 1986 SVO.
And really??? You think you can get the same thing for the same price in the v8???
No, compare apples to apples and if you put the same package but in the GT you are going to pay 50k.

Exactly on the power band. I test drove and my V6 Accord feels like a dream compared. Sure it's a V6 versus a turbo 4, (though the Mustang has more hp and torque) but this is called a sports car by Ford even with the 4 banger in it. It's still great what they can do with a 4cyl turbo now but in cars like the Mustang and Camaro it still seems silly. In the new Accord and Mazda 6 and daily mainstream drivers, the turbo 4s work for what's considered not a sports car.

This review actually helped me decide on how I wanted to equip my 2018 ecoboost. I opted for the base model, with 6-speed manual, and the 101A trim package (sync 3, power front seats). It’s a great daily driver, and gives nothing up for me as a 4-cylinder. I heard the automatic is a good transmission, even faster than the manual in a drag race. However, I enjoy shifting my own gears, and the MT82 gearbox isn’t bad for daily use.

Actually thought this was a good review - mostly fair. I’ve read the balkiness of the auto trans is due to the computer not having learned the driving style of the driver yet. So reviewers are at a disadvantage there. That said, I love my 2018 EB Mustang & expect the options have a lot to do with it: Premium pkg for daily driver creature comforts, didn’t bother with the Performance Pkg, got 6spd Manual. Makes for a really fun ride with enough pep to get me in trouble but still great economy for a daily. Lightning Blue w/Pony Pkg makes an already great looking car even better IMO.

    • @SunShineStateMetalShows
      @SunShineStateMetalShows 2 роки тому

Owning a 10 speed the trans is still confused even after 6000 miles. Its not confused if you put the throttle down but its super confused if your driving more traffic speed.

How I distinguish the ecoboost trim packages:
    (A) Base - entry level car enthusiast to get used to having 300+ horsepower and don't need many distracting options "out the gate." Opportunity to learn the car and have it as a daily driver.
    (B) Performance - mid level car enthusiast who can handle 300+ horsepower but looking for something more with bigger brakes, tires and sway bar (works done for you.) All you need to do is tune it, change the shifter, wheels & tires.
    (C) Premium - mid to high level car enthusiast who still wants the comfort options with the different drive modes but still has the option to "drive it hard" through the canyons, drag or on the track. Still may have to tune it, change the wheels and tires and shifter.
If those trim options don't work for you because you're comparing the Ecoboost motor to the GT motor or plan to modify it similar to the GT, then get at GT.

milehighmaniac100 Well put. It’s your money, and you buy the car that fits your requirements - not what others think. I went with the ecoboost, and couldn’t be happier. Have a friend who owns a 2016 V6 Camaro. He wanted to trash on my car until I told him my car’s specs. To make matters worse, his car with stock exhaust doesn’t sound much different than my I4 with stock exhaust. Personally, I don’t mind the exhaust note - I know that this car will never be a V8. However, it has enough hp/torque to be a very fun car. Mileage is a bonus...

@milehighmaniac100 I agree with you 100%. I bought a new 2017 base V-6 Mustang. Since buying it, I have visited four different dealers looking to trade it or sell it so that I could get a V-8 in a Dodge or Chevy. I won't buy a Mustang GTdue to the plastic oil pan and drain plug. The real reason why I haven't gotten rid of it yet, at the end of the day, I just can't part with the car. I've added about $2,000 in mods to make it more unique. And it gets crazy gas mileage and moves if I stomp on it. I bought it on price and wish that I never did.

It doesn't feel fast because it isnt fast, those claimed performance numbers are near impossible to achieve on a bone stock ecoboost. The tune is too conservative, the intercooler is too small and the spark plug gap is too big. These cars usually dyno around 240hp/390tq to the tires and cannot make power past 5000rpm.
A basic premium fuel tune with an upgraded intercooler and regapped spsrk plugs to .028" and maybe a catback exhaust for character makes this car a whole new animal that will put down 300hp/350tq to the wheels instead of the bloated crank rating from the factory and the engine will make power all the way to 6500rpm.
