I just upgraded from a 2018 Mustang EcoBoost to a 2022 Mustang GT. I am absolutely in love with my GT for OBVIOUS reasons, but man... the EcoBoost was a fun car, loved it very much. The 310HP was nothing to scoff at, it felt QUICK and the torque was nice. And I was getting 24MPG Hwy/city which was GREAT. Its such a solid car, and if anyone ever thinks about getting one, I will always recommend it. A different kind of satisfying from the roaring engine of a V8. EcoBoosts are awesome.
It makes a lot of sense for us in Europe to heed this advice. Because distances we travel here are so much smaller than you do in the States (90,000+ miles on a 3 year old car is an enormous amount by our standards), any vehicle you recommend has to be worth serious consideration. If a car can take that kind of use (especially with the gas you have, which is often diluted with ethanol - that's not allowed here), it should find life a breeze over here.
Actually the Aston Martin “Cygnet” is even worse, it’s a Toyota Aygo/iQ with Aston badging, front grille.... and pricing It’s a cheap Toyota city car with fancy Aston window dressing
I have an 2018 Ecoboost as my daily driver, and I'm very impressed with it. It's my daily, and it does a fantastic job getting me to - and from - work. It's got more than enough horses, and it's not a complete gas hog. I went with the premium package, and I thoroughly enjoy all the little extra bells and whistles. It puts my 2006 Dodge Ram - with the Hemi - to shame.
I got a 2019 or a 2020 4 cylinder convertible as a rental in Florida while there for work, thing was amazing. Sounded like a proper sports car, I would never have guessed it was a 4 with the exhaust and engine sounds. With the top down there was very little wind even at 70. Ride was not rough, tons of toys to play with like adjustable steering feel, transmission was great, was really a good car, one that can be used as a daily driver easily.
The EcoBoost Mustang is a great car. I had a 2016 EB premium on a lease and another than the evaporator core breaking on it, (which affects nearly all 2015-2017 Mustangs), it was a great car. With 93k miles on it, I'm surprised this one hasn't had that evaporator core failure. When the lease ended I bought a used 2018 GT with the Performance Pack 1 on it and a 6 Speed Manual. It's a sweet car. With my commute around town/to work, I get 18 MPG in my GT... as opposed to 22 MPG in my older EcoBoost Mustang. Not that much worse for so much more power and noise. Any modern day Mustang is pretty cool, I just love the V8 though.
I have my 2015 Mustang Ecoboost Premium at 97,000 miles.. Only had 1 problem which had to do with evap and was only $45 from the Ford dealership.. I do synthetic oil changes every 3/4000 miles.. and only use premium fuel..I also have an extended warranty until 120,000 miles
Ive been renting the 2019 Mustang Ecoboost for a month now and for $26,000 for the base model is Freaking Crazy!! Literally feels like a sports car for a quarter of the price
@John Q. I deliver food in Manhattan so based on my budget, how much i would spend on a car + maintenance + insurance is about the same as i spend renting. come spring and summer time ill only use the vehicle to get me to and from Manhattan and ride my ebike during the these times. P.s i rent the cheapest possible car for ex. This week is $150, but the lady i see every week is cool with me so ive been rocking out the 2019 mustang EcoBoost for a month
300hp isn’t a slouch. I considered buying a V6 Mustang as a pizza delivery car but it sits too low for my old 50+ legs. I couldn’t afford a V8 Mustang.
@@B0xlife1 The v6 was a lovely engine, nice noise, revved well, but you had to keep it in its rev range to get power from it. With a manual and a "sporty" driving style it was a peach and definitely not slow.
Hey Scotty, why are you such an amazing person helping people learn the ins and outs of cars? I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from you. Thanks so much for what you do! ❤️
I have a 2015 mustang GT premium automatic and on the highway, cruising at around 65-70mph, it gets 30-32 mpgs. But I’m the city it’s so tempting to rev it out and let the coyote howl 😭 than my MPG drops to about 14 mpgs
Tucsonan Dude no it’s not far fetched, I drive about 45 miles to visit my in-laws and the needle barely moves. It gets about the same gas mileage as my 2014 V6 mustang back when that one was stock. So if you’re getting a V6 for gas mileage, don’t do it. Only difference is city driving. My V6 gets about 17mpg while my GT gets 14
2018 Mustang GT, the 460 HP V8, with 6 speed manual transmission, I get 32 +/- MPG on the highway. The V8 is just loafing along at 70 MPH. I’m not anti four cylinder, but LOVE my GT.
Sold my 1991 mustang LX 4cyl a couple yrs ago that I also called not a real mustang, built for a fuel crisis. Anyway, loved her since college and it was my only vehicle entirely for over 27 years with no major mechanical problems but I drove her easy. They have two plugs per cylinder and get out of their own way just fine. Has original engine, transmission and the new owner is thrilled with her.
Leaving out the fact Ford is #21 out of 32 companies in reliability. And Ford turns their back and look away every time a transmission fails on the assembly line. Even if their professionals warn them about it.
@@cactneir Yeah not really talking about reliablity, just talking about the actual latest mustang looks/feels special to me, especially in a world where every new car is an SUV these days.
These newer cars are likely more reliable than the older ones. However, as an owner of two Mustangs, I would argue that reliability is not the Mustang owner's chief concern. I'd rather have fun for 150k miles than just go from point A to point B for 200k.
Supposedly even the old Windsor engines can take up to 500hp without being too unreliable. But I dont want a serious street legal race car. Ive come to like natrually aspirated V8s.
All I know is that the two people I know who have Ecoboost engines have had nothing but troubles with them. One rode in my old 2004 350Z and got rid of his mustang and bought a used Z. He loves the 370Z he bought. His Mustang had head gasket failure at like 30K miles and the other guy I know had similar issues at a little over 40K miles. Scotty is correct. These new automatic transmissions are a LOT quicker then a manual car unless you are some professional driver with split second reflexes. Where a manual shines is on a road course. BUt for 0-60, the new automatics are quicker.
Wife and I looked at one of these a few years back and passed on it. Went with the V8 instead. We just could not get passed the fact that it sounded like some little ricer car when you hit the gas. To us a muscle car is supposed to have a nice rumble and make some nice music for the ears.
Everyone over 50 or so loves Mustangs. The Mustang and the Camaro were the cars to have. We were able to get them used for a few hundred bucks in the early 80's......... seriously. Of course not many people ever imagined that car prices would become insane. The government pushing the fuel regulations too fast, too hard in the 70's really destroyed the American muscle cars and cars in general.
@@notsosilentmajority1 The Mustang, introduced in 1964, was intended to be from the beginning the people's sports car or, in others words, a sports car everyone could afford. As a result, its true sports car heritage was rather limited, with a solid rear axle and four wheel drum brakes. Since then the Mustang and striven to prove itself in the sports car market where now it has reached the point where you can drive a modern day Mustang with many of the same features as a 911 Porsche for only a fraction of the cost.
@@zoperxplex Agreed. I remember the early mustangs, we drove those and late 60 Camaro's as teens. I prefer Mustangs but loved both cars back then. They were extremely affordable used cars, even when you figure in cost of living and all that. Definitely well worth the money.
@@Cassella_and_Salt Remember those days? I wish I had some of the cars that I had as a kid. I only paid a few hundred bucks for each of them and now they're worth tons. Mustang, Camaro, Charger, Chevelle...... I wish I had any one of those cars. Man, I would love to have a 67 Mustang today. Lol, I can't afford one today. Best wishes.
Ron B while the sound was better (especially on cold starts), the 350lb ft torque with the i4 has it beat by a mile. Neither of them rev as smoothly as the Cologne 4.0 though.
@@Drewhasit I had the 4.0 (never knew that was its code name, so thanks) and I love it for what it was. Had 120k on the speedometer and that thing ran smooth as hell
@@youthfulalpaca2792 I'm thinking about getting an 05-09 Mustang with the V6 sometime within the next few years if I have enough money. Are they fairly reliable vehicles overall?
youthful Alpaca sure thing! Had over 160k on mine. The trans was going out but the motor still ran smooth as butter. “Base” models sure have come a long way!
Ernesto Rodriguez This 4 cylinder will outrun all the V8 GTs up to 2011 or so. Not everyone buying a a Mustang needs the bigger engines or the much bigger insurance premiums.
Sheds light on the Ecoboost vs.V8 efficiency by comparing easy cruising on the highway (31mpg) to driving hard around town (8mpg). Solid logic, very useful apples to apples comparison.
I appreciate your analysis of the EB Mustang. I have had one nearly 5 years (‘15), and the only non V8 I have ever owned (9 total). Guess what? It’s also the best one I ever owned and that includes an ‘04 SVT Cobra, and ‘17 GT 350. Why? You failed to mention that it’s the lightest motor Mustang and when combined with the Performance Package (that includes 4 piston front brakes); handling that is decidedly non Mustang in terms of turn in and fast transitions, yes better than a GT350 IMO. I think the motor will be just as durable (stock) as any V8, why? Because it uses a very stout 5 main bearing bottom end (same as a V8) and it actually has a lower redline than the Coyote V8 and shorter piston stroke. The real beauty of the EB is the street fun torque curve down low, and my average of 24 MPG. It honestly never fails to put a grin on my face. EB PP!
Right here, folks... Had a '19 with the PP since last May and it's close to 20K on the odo - and that's allll just weekends and holidays. "on rails" would be an accurate depiction of how she handles. I'm sure the 20 or so damn deer that are still alive appreciate the breaking power as well, but I digress.
Old school VW Rabbits were great, I had a tuned up 79 until it broke a high pressure fuel line when I started it. It burned to a crisp in a few minutes.
Owned a 2007 335i twin turbo inline 6 bmw, two mustang gt's 1997 and 2001, and I test drive this car a barrette jackson and was incredibly shocked by the torque. Amazing performance and I couldn't believe it was a 4 cylinder.
I just bought a 2020 mustang GT premium. Watching this video after I bought it because, of course I have to know what scotty has to say about it. Glad to know he loves them too!
I bought the 2020 HPP Mustang EcoBoost, I love it and yes you CAN get 30+ mpgs if you drive conservatively, but yes, they drop like a stone once you let your right foot go to the floor...lol
my 2009 GT Premium mustang was 27000 dollars brand new off the lot. It's crazy how high mustangs have inflated in price. I will never buy another mustang due to the insane price gouging they do now. I still have my mustang GT and it runs like new with 130,000 miles on it. I haven's had any problems. just had my rear brakes done and fluid changes and thats it. Infact im still on my original front brakes and original belts
I have a 17 Eco... Slapped a CAI and after market exhaust. It still ain't no V8 but the sound is better. Plus the whosh of the turbo can be heard so much better.
Hi Scotty, So Happy you spoke about this. My daughter just bought a 2018 Eco Boost 4 cylinder Mustang. Great looking car and a lot of power. I'm glad to here you approve of the 10 speed trans. But I thought you didn't like the GDI. Great video as always! Cheers!
In the Netherlands: Basic Mustang 2.3 is €69.290 The 5.0 is €109.450 With gas prices €1.65 a liter you you probably can understand why we don't see a lot of V8's here anymore.
No 1966 Mustang V8 was rated at only 164 horsepower. The lowest horsepower V8 in the '66 Mustang was the 200 HP 2 barrel 289 (C-code). There was also the 4V 225 HP (A-code) & the Hi-Po 271 HP (K-code). You're thinking of the 2V 260 F-code ONLY available in early '65 (what everyone calls a '64 & 1/2).
Raising the octane rating (also known as the anti-knock index) doesn't change the energy content of a gallon of gasoline. A higher octane rating indicates greater resistance to knock, the early combustion of the fuel-air mixture that causes cylinder pressure to spike.
I had a 16 v6 mustang! I loved it so much. I just got me a 2020 5.0 and it is TOTALLY worth the upgrade. Its got so much more torque and power it will make you smile every time.
@@suggesttwo A ranger and Thunderbird are both slower than a stock Eco boost mustang. My Saab 93 is also faster than both of those xD 4.6s are slow as hell with the stock 4 speed trans

@@suggesttwo I bought a 00 v6 mustang with a 4r70 for $500 and drove it for like ever with a bad lifter tick only did oil changes and I beat the piss out of it and it needed nothing had ac and all it eventually spun a bearing though
Biggest issue is oil starvation and what will cause your turbo to fail. If you drive a ecoboost hard all the time get more frequent oil changes. Heat kills the turbos on ecoboosts.
Why don’t you do a review on the 2010 Camaro RS-SS . Consumer reports only found one issue and that was as the exhaust system. I actually put a new Borla exhaust on the car when I purchased it. The car is bullet proof.
You only get reliability out of a manual if you're floating the gears. Otherwise, on average, automatic transmissions last nearly twice as long as manuals.
@Andrew Man111 That's because they're using the clutch. Clutching the gears takes WAAAY longer to shift than even a slow, 1980s automatic transmission can shift. If you're matched with a real professional who's never used the clutch in his life, then he can slam through the gears in seconds using a manual. In conclusion, we can thank our lucky stars that 99% of manual trans. owners don't know how to actually drive stick, and lose every race.
I own a 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T 6 speed manual and average around 24mpg. I normally get 27mph on highway and a pitiful in town (around 16mpg), but I rarely drive in town being I live in the rural flat land of the midwest. It has plenty of power and outstanding fuel economy with a 5.7L V8.
Hey, Scotty, love your videos! I have a 2015 Ecoboost Mustang that I took to the drag strip to see how those 310 ponies performed. Best run was 14.289 seconds at 96 mph. BUT, I paddle shifted it at just 5000 RPM. When I let the computer shift it, the points were 6500 and it ran 2 MPH less and a full 15 hundreds of a second SLOWER in ET. Conclusion, it ain't revving any higher, actually lower than the 5.0 GT! Keep up the good work, buddy!
I had a 1989 2.3L LX Mustang and I think it only had about 90 hp and struggled to do 75mph. Now my 2016 3.5L EcoBoost F150 can do that if you just sneeze on the gas pedal.
That's a Mazda engine. Same one from the Mazdaspeed cars but with a few modifications. It's the same 2.3L displacement, but Ford added Variable Exhaust Valve timing and a different sized turbo.
He's right about the VW GTI at the end. Had a 2011 up until a year or so ago. The headliner fell twice, the side panels fell apart, the soft touch pieces crumbled, the engine slipped a bearing due to a malfunctioning oil pump when I took a hard turn, needed to replace the engine, needed to replace the water pump, the DSG transmission wore out even though VW/Audi claim it's "bulletproof" so that had to be replaced. The suspension was starting to go right before I sold it, A/C was dead, all before 6-7 years and 52k miles. Absolutely piles of garbage.

Last time I was this early Scotty was a young mechanic
Ford ruined the Mustang name with that SUV they call Mustang...
but if they bring back the Mach 1 with a shaker scoop... they will be back in my good graces.

I love the SCOTTY license plates to cover the customer’s!! Great job Scotty
The 5.0 emblems on the side make all the difference in the world.
Ive been renting the 2019 Mustang Ecoboost for a month now and for $26,000 for the base model is Freaking Crazy!! Literally feels like a sports car for a quarter of the price
My GT base was only $31,000.
@John Q. I deliver food in Manhattan so based on my budget, how much i would spend on a car + maintenance + insurance is about the same as i spend renting.
come spring and summer time ill only use the vehicle to get me to and from Manhattan and ride my ebike during the these times.

I’d pick the V6 Mustang over the 2.3 Turbo, except Ford dropped the V6 after the 2017 model year.
They should put the 2.7L Ecoboost in the Mustang. They probably won't because it would take away 5.0L Coyote sales.
That v6 was a joke and a slouch at that, you know damn well you wouldn't of gotten that engine.
300hp isn’t a slouch. I considered buying a V6 Mustang as a pizza delivery car but it sits too low for my old 50+ legs. I couldn’t afford a V8 Mustang.
v6 is probably as reliable as the 2.3 I4 but slower
@@B0xlife1 The v6 was a lovely engine, nice noise, revved well, but you had to keep it in its rev range to get power from it. With a manual and a "sporty" driving style it was a peach and definitely not slow.
Hey Scotty, why are you such an amazing person helping people learn the ins and outs of cars? I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from you. Thanks so much for what you do! ❤️
For the money honey
Scotty K all the way! 👍🏻...
I have a 2015 mustang GT premium automatic and on the highway, cruising at around 65-70mph, it gets 30-32 mpgs. But I’m the city it’s so tempting to rev it out and let the coyote howl 😭 than my MPG drops to about 14 mpgs
Smoky Same man, 2014 GT Premium, gotta love watching the MPG drop lol
That's a bit far fetched for gas mileage...highway or not.
Metal the warrior people underestimate the gas mileage of these cars lol they’re not bad on highway, that’s why I daily my 5.0
Lol same, my 2012 gt first gen 5.0 gets about 15 avg 🤣
I don’t care if the new automatics are faster than shifting gears, I still prefer manual transmission.

Some people say that the new manual transmissions in this one are horrible, I would do research
@@shalokshalom mt82 is not that bad, it’s mainly the stock clutch that causes lockout issues. You can also do a t56 swap for relatively cheap.

If a 2-passenger car worked for me, I'd save my $ until I could afford a real Mustang.
These mustangs are the nicest thing Ford has made in recent times.
Leaving out the fact Ford is #21 out of 32 companies in reliability. And Ford turns their back and look away every time a transmission fails on the assembly line. Even if their professionals warn them about it.
Australian Falcon was better.
Scotty: A 2013 c6 corvette, a 2017 GT Mustang convertible, a 2001 Chrysler Prowler, or a 2020 Miata - which would you pick?

So, when Scotty sits in a car, it automatically loses 9 HP?
All I know is that the two people I know who have Ecoboost engines have had nothing
but troubles with them. One rode in my old 2004 350Z and got rid of his mustang and
bought a used Z. He loves the 370Z he bought. His Mustang had head gasket failure
at like 30K miles and the other guy I know had similar issues at a little over 40K miles.
Scotty is correct. These new automatic transmissions are a LOT quicker
then a manual car unless you are some professional driver with split second reflexes.
Where a manual shines is on a road course. BUt for 0-60, the new automatics
are quicker.
Wife and I looked at one of these a few years back and passed on it. Went with the V8 instead. We just could not get passed the fact that it sounded like some little ricer car when you hit the gas. To us a muscle car is supposed to have a nice rumble and make some nice music for the ears.
Tell the truth Scotty, you love Mustangs.

Always liked the 3.7 Cyclone over the 4 cylinder turbo

I love my Challenger but now that I'm doing more road course tracks these days I'm leaning towards an eco boost mustang. Great cars.
I appreciate your analysis of the EB Mustang. I have had one nearly 5 years (‘15), and the only non V8 I have ever owned (9 total). Guess what? It’s also the best one I ever owned and that includes
an ‘04 SVT Cobra, and ‘17 GT 350.
I’m trying to make my 04 mustang last as long as possible for fun, I could buy a newer car but it doesn’t seem as cool as keeping a car alive.

Ehhh I would still rather have a V8 manual. You know, for the reliability of course 🙃
Automatic then
Til she drops a valve like my last one did at 86k
You only get reliability out of a manual if you're floating the gears. Otherwise, on average, automatic transmissions last nearly twice as long as manuals.
@Andrew Man111 That's because they're using the clutch. Clutching the gears takes WAAAY longer to shift than even a slow, 1980s automatic transmission can shift.
If you're matched with a real professional who's never used the clutch in his life, then he can slam through the gears in seconds using a manual. In conclusion, we can thank our lucky stars that 99% of manual trans. owners don't know how to actually drive stick, and lose every race.
To run into crowds
