In Defense of Aegon II Targaryen | House of the Dragon Season 1

  • I know, Aegon isn't really a good guy - but I think we should talk about WHY he became the man he is & if that's relatable in any way to some viewers at home while watching House of the Dragon.
    Game of Thrones has done a great job with bad guys you can sympathize with and I think Aegon is on the way to being another one - one of King Viserys' worst traits was neglecting Aegon II & I hope people give him a chance in the future despite being trash now.

    What's interesting to me is that many people would assume Aegon II likes the power that comes with being King but what he's actually enjoying at the coronation isn't the power but the fact he feels noticed. People are actually giving him positive attention compared to Viserys really not giving him any attention at all and when Alicent isn't slapping him she's drilling into his head that his life is always at risk if he doesn't take the Crown, something he's never wanted to do

  • @Rozes313

    I blame Viserys and Alicent, whenever he wasn’t neglected by both of them he was either slapped or shouted at. Can’t wait for his character arc in season 2, I hope they do him justice and stop forcing this Rhaenyra Mary Sue thing upon us

      Im really hoping her season 3 plotline wont be framed as tragic or that the smallfolk will be treated like villains, if they do that then the show will go from being brilliant to awful.

      @@arturozavalajr4315 Was he though? I mean definitely that there is the far darker idea of him being a pedophile as well but I feel in general they went with one of the darkest interpretations of his character. He's a rapist who watches feral child fights that involve his own bastard children for his amusement. In the show while in the book there is also the more conservative reading that he was a man who didn't like responsibility, was found in a brothel, rejected the crown until he was warned that his children would be in danger if he didn't take the throne and then did to protect the people he cared about. Now this version would swing heavily in favor of the greens almost laughably so but the thing is it's a fake history with contradictory accounts you can make what you want of it but the interpretation the show goes with really makes it hard to see Aegon as anything other than an animal that needs to be put down. But hey I am apparently in the minority that didn't like the show and will not be watching season 2.

      The dumb part about that scene was how they emphasized the rape when in fact most nobles slept with their serving women and im sure most were unwilling to do so. But they didn't really have a choice.
      If the original show portrayed the abuse of serving women the same way, then Robert Baratheon would be the most notorious rapist there ever was with Tyrion 2nd place.

    Aegon's main problem was Mommy issues. Alicent didn't help with the way she raised him, he originally Didn't want the throne, he even said in the book "what kind of brother steals his sister's throne?" Then Alicent jumped in and made him do what she wanted. I think what happens to Alicent after the war is even funny in a way. I don't think Aegon is a usurper. The reason being is Westeros already made it clear that they want a king over a queen. Even though Viserys named his daughter his heir, one could argue that he broke the law. I personally think that even a king is not above the law (mostly) and still has to follow natural succession laws.

    • @TheBattProductions
      @TheBattProductions  Рік тому +3

      Are you saying Viserys broke the law, or Aegon broke the law?
      I mean, the King is the law really when it comes down to it. Truthfully, Ned could've named Sansa the heir to Winterfell and it would've been acceptable if he said so. I doubt it'd ever stand over time and people would be pissed, but the family's monarch gets to make that call.

    • @Daemon3rdBlackfyre
      @Daemon3rdBlackfyre Рік тому +8

      @@TheBattProductions I’m saying viserys broke the law and tradition. He always had a suitable male heir whether it was daemon or Aegon. Yes, a king can do as he likes, but look where that got the mad king, Joffrey and the many other kings who did as they liked. It’s better to follow the law and tradition to not piss off the people who follow you or else you’ll just create conflicts, civil wars, family feuds and essentially self destruct your house and it’s power. Viserys meant well, but actions only harmed his house and the realm by breaking tradition and law. If you don’t think it’s law for males to inherit over females, then take a look at how Viserys got the throne in the first place. That great council set the law right then and there, that males will always inherit over females.

      @Daemon3rdBlackfyre Рік тому +8

      @@TheBattProductions which is my point, naming a female heir when you have a suitable brother or son would immediately create a rift in the realm like we saw. Not saying Daemon would’ve been perfect, but if viserys wanted his daughter to be queen he could’ve married her to daemon and not of married the Hightower. Then there wouldn’t of been any challenges to his heir. If not he could’ve married her to Aegon, but choosing his day over his son created a rift over a choice that Westeros had already made clear they would not want. Is it fair? No, but it’s what Westeros wants.

He was friendly with his nephews until Alicent told him that he could never joke about Aemond with them, and its he and Aemond against them and slaps him up for playing around. The Pink Dread didn't seem THAT cruel of a prank. It was not vicious bullying. It was funny...if Aemond wasn't so self serious and easily offended. Aemond is clearly Alicents favorite child; he's the only one she seems to have a real relationship with. She tried to kill Rhaenyra for that lost eye-which was 100% understandable imo. You cut my kids' eye out, over an insult that just so happens to also be the simple truth and I'm choosing violence. Had it been Aegon's eye she'd have smacked his other eye out. And stupid Rhaenyra, "exhausting wasn't it hiding beneath the cloak of your own righteousness!" Bitch what?! Your kid just tried to kill her kid! Are you even paying attention right now or did Daemon eff the last bit of sense you had out of you. Plus shes a 304 compared to Alicent, so she has no ground to stand on calling her unrighteous. After that scene where she wants Aemond "sharply questioned" aka tortured...because Aemond told the blatant truth even if it was not kind it is true and they did all come to jump him so it's understandable if he was not being super nice to them...I love this show. He had great character development in the Fire & Blood book (despite it being a historical account) and became more of a badass while Rhaenyra became more of a coward. I think the point is that Aegon II became a pragmatist like what Rhaenyra was in Season 1 while Rhaenyra became more of a coward like Aegon II was in Season 1. Unlike Rhaenyra, he actually fought in the war and earned his battle scars as a war veteran. He even single-handedly retook Dragonstone and convinced most of Rhaenyra's supporters there to join him.

    Rhaenyra must wed Aegon. He had no interest in rule. So she can rule the kingdom. Aegon was very lusty. So there is no problem of heirs. Age difference was not a problem. Maekar married 25 year old ceryse hightower at the age of 12.

    There never was a TV character called Joffrey Lannister.
    The TV character should properly be called Joffrey Waters, or maybe Joffrey Hill, but insists on being called Joffrey Baratheon as admitting his bastardy would undermine his claim to the Iron Throne.
    Joffrey Lannister is a historical character in Westeros from long before Aegon's Conquest. Born Joffrey Lydden, he was an Andal knight who married the only daughter of King Gerold III Lannister and took his wife's family name when he was allowed to inherit Casterly Rock and become the first King of the Rock who had Andal instead of purely First Men blood.

      Meh he was Joffrey Lannister as far as I'm concerned. Once he became King, he wasn't keeping a bastard name anyway so might as well just say Baratheon or Lannister.

    My favorite character from the Green faction is Helaena. According to the book, she seemed to be the most innocent member of the Green faction despite being the wife of King Aegon II, and she was also a dreamer with dragon dreams like her ancestor Daenys the Dreamer.
    "Hand turns loom; spools of green, spools of black; dragons of flesh weaving dragons of thread."
    "He'll have to close an eye." "Beware the beast beneath the boards."

      He was born without any living brothers. For all intents and purposes he's the first born son, born first in line to the throne. Aemma's son can't be before him if he's dead. I'd say he was the second son in a sense that Viserys treated Rhaenyra like she was, "The first son."

    Opinion: I almost feel pity for him because his reign was absolutely miserable. He was unconscious for a good half of it and then the other half he was in constant physical agony and lost all his family members. I almost feel sorry for him but I can’t help thinking he brought it on himself in a way. Surprisingly from reading the lore, he’s not the worst member of the Greens. His mother, Ser Criston Coke, Larys Strong we’re awful. He actually was going to do the right thing but was manipulated out of it. That is where my sympathy draws in because he didn’t want to do it from the beginning and was actually doing the right thing by obeying his fathers wishes unlike the rest of the Greens that betrayed Viserys as soon as he drew his last breathe. In that way I can say he was loyal to his father even though their relationship isn’t much specified in the books. He was probably thinking that in his last moments that if he had not taken the throne then his children wouldn’t be dead and he wouldn’t be a severely burned cripple. I bet most of the Greens in the end we’re experiencing high forms of regret. Especially since they didn’t even win in the end. The war was about which bloodline would come out on top and it was Rhaenyra’s. And to add insult to injury he was betrayed by his own men, not that I feel sorry for him on that, but that’s just pitiful to go through all that trouble to be sold out by your own men and knowing that as your dying your enemy wins because the matter of succession went through Rhaenyra’s children not his. Even though he’s a despicable character, his ending almost makes you feel sorry for him. ALMOST (for me)

    @MissChambersxo Рік тому

    Aegon is a HORRIBLE person but I do feel sorry for him. Rape is unforgivable, yes. But in all other respects Aegon is a victim. Viserys cares WAY more about Rhaenyra. To be fair to Viserys, he lost his beloved wife and suddenly had to remarry and had pressure to then have more kids he didn’t want when he already had Rhaenyra, that will fuck you up. But it doesn’t change that he was absent for Aegon in a way he wasn’t for Rhaenyra. Alicent had him as a young teenager and had no idea how to be a mother since she was still a child herself. Combine with that her blatantly treating him as a political object since he could walk and… yeah. That will mess you up. He had a terrible upbringing. He probably felt really neglected growing up, with a mum who couldn’t cope with being a mum and who drilled it into his head that when his father died his own sister would kill her, and a dad who wasn’t there for them at all. He didn’t want to be king even as a kid, but his destiny was chosen for him at earth when he full well knew he didn’t want it and his dad didn’t want it. A kid doesn’t develop a massive drinking problem and become a nymphomaniac out of nowhere. It’s not like Joffrey where Aegon was born a monster, he was made that way.
    He knows he’s unfit to rule unlike every other unfit king, but his mum and grandfather still proceed to just force him into RULING A WHOLE COUNTRY for their own ambition. Otto just so he can have House Hightower in the royal fold, and Alicent for the same reason, except with the added factor of… let’s be honest, she’s jealous of Rhaenyra. Otto is a slimy piece of shit, but that’s what he’s always been. It’s Alicent who gets pissy at Rhaenyra for sleeping around despite the fact she could probably do so herself seeing as she’s one of the most powerful people in Westeros, and allies with someone as blatantly shady as Larys Strong to get someone she knows is a scheming PoS back as hand. He’d probably just be fine with Rhaenyra being Queen, it’s not like Rhaenyra would disinherit him. In the show and the books it’s pretty clear that she only really had bad feelings towards Aegon after Lucerys died, and his mum and grandad put him on the throne the moment her beloved dad died. Him and his siblings probably would have gotten good places in court. But no, his awful relatives just scheme right after his father died and knowingly start a massive civil war that he’s suddenly thrown right into the centre of. When you think about it it’s sad because at his coronation
    And then when you consider this civil war ends in him losing all of his (legitimate) children, all of his siblings, covered in horrific burns, unable to walk, and ends with him being poisoned by his own advisors… yeah. Honestly his story is really sad.

    • @TheBattProductions

      Alicent was still a child herself when she gave birth it’s not surprising she didn’t know what to do with her kids. Viserys ignored and didn’t even cared about most of his kids, he only cared about Rhaenyra.
