  • Today is the first part of Marleys Wild Mustang Project, where she will be gentling a yearling wild mustang and competing in a Youth In-Hand TIP Challenge (Sept 23'). This a youth TIP program run by the Mustang Heritage Foundation and the Bureau of Land Management to encourage the adoption of mustangs that otherwise would be confined in BLM holding corrals. In the video we will go over some of the techniques she is using to train her mustang, some upgrades to the shelter, and plans for the next phases of the gentling process and TIP challenge preparation.
As always, let me know if you have any questions and thanks for watching!

Awe, my Grandfather raised horses and taught all the kids to learn how to ride. He of course broke them, probably old school style but he loved them, we all loved them. I remember Annie and later Star as the two I rode. Neat to see your growing daughter have such patience and maturity in gaining trust of her beautiful mustang! I see her having such a bright future with all the skills and confidence, eagerness for responsibility and acceptance of challenges, etc. that you’ve taught her. Congrats on your Mustang

What a great project for your family. I hope Wyndy adapts to your family quickly. She looks like one of the horses in a Beverly Doolittle painting.
I used to work with a friend that rescued Percheron horses. I see that you have supplied a horse ball. Consider adding a bristled push broom head screwed to a post or vertical panel where she can brush her face and flanks.

I had no idea that y'all were going to do this.
So cool that Marley is doing the TIP competition.
Short story...I've been obsessed with horses my whole life (I'm 60 now).
Had some experiences with horses at my aunt and uncle's place in Washington state, for a couple of summers.
Fast forward, a few years ago I ran across some horse trainers that were involved with the Extreme Mustang Makeover...I was hooked!
Most did video the whole process, and this is when I REALLY learned about horses, what makes them tick, and the training process.
Currently there are three trainers that I follow. They also are the ones that I truly appreciate, and respect.
Warwick Schiller (doesn't do a lot of new videos, probably because he a subscription based program online, but does have quite a few older ones.
Tim Anderson (trains, and shows Reigning horse)
    Ryan Rose
These folks know horses, and they all have an approach that focuses on creating a relationship with the horse, as well as working their mind, and not just their bodies.
The first one I found doing the Extreme Mustang Makeover, was Elyssa Wallace. She does an amazing job with these mustangs.
Unfortunately most of her videos are of her competing in dressage and cross country now. Not really into the whole horse "competition" thing, but her older mustang training videos are still very interesting. She does post the occasional exhibition video with a couple of her mustangs.
Marley is living my dream right now.
If only I knew what I know now, when I had the opportunity to work with horses in my younger years 😏
Can't wait to see the videos of Marley, and her new baby.
    Thanks Joe!

Oh yes, we have watched quite a few of those Mustang makeovers!!!! Absolutely amazing what they end up doing with those horse!
We are so excited about this new venture and Marley is completely over the moon with horses. I think she’s been riding for about 2 years and literally is ‘horse crazy’. Eat sleep and breaths horses😂
Of course now I’m already thinking about how we can maybe get another for my wife so that when Wyndy is old enough to ride, then we can ride with her. And I kinda want to do a burro now too🤪
Anyways, it’s been very exciting and I can’t wait to show you some footage of what they can learn together!

I absolutely love donkeys! I'd give anything to walk out in the morning, and be greeted by them saying good morning. I also sub to some donkey rescues. Have learned quite a bit about their behaviors, which just like horses, is "survival", their approach to it is definitely different.

And you’ve got a good eye noticing the wrist. Unfortunately it’s getting worse as I’ve just been trying to ignore it🤦‍♂️. But I did see a surgeon and he said it’s a simple fix, but I’ll have to be off work for about a month for it to heal. But I’m trying to seek out some alternative options (homeoapthy and acupuncture) before resorting to the surgery.
      So we’ll see…..😬

PERFECTION I was super impressed with both Marley and Wyndy. The curiosity that Wyndy showed is an excellent sign of acceptance. I love seeing the size match up between Marley and Wyndy also. Growing up with horses in my youth. I have seen a lot of intimidation coming from larger breeds. Causing want to be riders to fear the animal. This match up (size) was considered perfection in my day. Watching your video sure brought back some memories, They are a ton of upkeep with horse's ! My dad was a big believer of cool down walks and baths after trail rides or barrel runs. So it seemed like are horses were constantly being pampered !!! But it did teach me a lot about responsibility and proper care for my animals of any kind. So I am thankful. Your family life is an inspiration for all of us. Thanks for sharing as always. Ron

Congratulations ! Wyndy already seems to be settling down nicely. She’s a beautiful little filly, and is a great addition to your farm. A few things I did to desensitize my endurance horses was to leave feed bags in the pen so they got used to things blowing around on the ground, such as plastic bags that seems to be everywhere. . I’d also gently toss a tennis ball at them to get them used to something that may touch or drop on them while out on trail. After they we used to that I’d throw the ball for our dogs near and past the horses so they’d get used to, mostly cows, coyotes and rabbits, darting out of the bushes. Can’t wait to see the progression…..

Thank you Raynola😊🙏. It’s been all Marley can talk about for about a year now….lots of learning and growing with this project! It’s been quite learning experience so far….in addition to the training aspect, shes learning quite a bit in budgeting, large animal biology and healthcare, and so much more…. Of course also the emotional bonding is huge too!

With the wood in the stall be watchful for horse cribbing. Some make it a bad habit when they are stressed

I have been watching professional horse trainers, ones that help people with the problems their having with their horse and the one thing they seem to say is never feed your horse from your hand. 😊
