I declutter one small space/area at a time. I don’t stress to declutter a lot at one time. I revisit my spaces continuously over and over. It’s amazing what I can declutter the 2nd or 3rd time in that same area.
Yes! Exactly!😄
I like to do a little wander around the house now that we've gone through almost all of it once. There's always a thing here or there that was somehow invisible the first time and now clearly can be let go.
When I'm lazy to clean my room. I watch this guy's video and I get motivated 😎
I need daily motivation. Today I dropped of two bags of stuff. Found my ss# but lost my license!
" Reset the room" in Atomic Habits also gives me a sense of decluttering.
I'll have to read that again soon
I go through phases of decluttering.
Things eventually go through a bunch of random “waiting zones” until I find out what to do with them.
Usually I get annoyed by something that triggers me to want to declutter haha
For the "What if I need it later" category, I make myself aware that because of all of this clutter, I will not remember that I have this and will buy it again anyways, therefore I can declutter it right away. Additionally, if you are keeping all the money from selling the clutter, you will have more than enough to buy this one or two things again that you might need in 3 years from now.
Very true, thank you for this! Even if I remember I have it, doesn't mean I can find it, LOL.
I just did the Minimalist 30 day Challenge. This is day 27 and I’ve already got ahead and working on day 31!! Now I’m looking at my office and decluttering there as well. I feel so much lighter. I donated 13 banker boxes full of stuff, gave some things away and sold stuff too. There’s been some hard times but when I donated I thought about the money I had originally spent on it. What a waste of money! So now I will not spend so much on “stuff” and save my money. That’s my WHY. I’m 4 years from retirement and want a tiny house. I need more money and less stuff so decluttering is a win-win!! Thanks Gabe!
*Day one or one day.* *You decide.*
YESSS!
Decluttering helps me in life. I also declutter in my journal. This helps me to have stamina & endurance. So many voices in life want our attention or try to define us. Validating from within is vital to well being.
‘Let me check my work roster and get back to you’ is my favourite response. It helps me not commit to things simply to make other people happy.
100%
My goal is to declutter and become more minimal, but as you stated, it all came back. I think I am to a point where I am overwhelmed by all the stuff that I wanted but can really live without. I am working on a system to separate and get rid of. I thought to myself if there was a fire and it all burned up, would it matter as much and could I do without or would I jump in the fire to save it all. Thank you
Imagine packing for a month in another country far away. What would you bring? Or put everything in another area: garage, basement, attic. Only bring back what you need now. After a certain time, let the rest go.
Always the best
🔥☕
For seldom used power tools that could possibly be needed in the future: put it on permanent loan to a relative who could use it often, say a child who is fixing up their house, with the understanding that you can "borrow" it back when you need it. This helps to maintain these tools because they are getting cleaned, oiled, etc. instead of rusting away in my basement.
Good idea. But please make sure child actually wants said tools. Not just being polite. And if it’s a temporary period that they need it, don’t forget to take your items back!
Bro u really deserve way more subs
I support that completely. This channel has lots of value!
I'm already completely & purely enjoying from the heart a genuine effort in the 30 day challenge! The process works, nothing tricky at all about it. No vices or anything. Don't quit now Gabe.😊
Hello, I am a new minimalist and your videos have really helped me!
Glad they can help!
Declutter my shoe organizer that I used for supplies... Basically a junk drawer I turned into a shoe organizer. It's usually supplies from office to home, batteries etc. I like it... It's more organized. It saves a drawer to be for something else since I have a little kitchen. And everything is kept organized.
Really like your perspective. It has helped me really simplify my life. Glad to be here.
I'm so glad to be welcomed here. Love to learn and a lot to give.
I discovered your channel a week ago and it is insane the amount of things I have learned! Thank you so much for sharing your journey, I am learning that minimalism as a word seems so simple but there are so much things and aspects of life included in this way of living, I will definitly continue watching your videos, keep them coming!
I think one of the biggest things I've taken on since starting both financial as well as lifestyle minimalism (one month down a life time to go) is the realization that its a journey. I can't run 10 miles right now so I'll run 3, i.e. I can't reasonably purge the whole house in a weekend so I'll take it one room, cabinet or box at a time. It's really help to cut down on the anxiety of making such a large shift in my life.
Love the Beast mug!! :)
This might just be the best video I've ever seen on YT. Seriously, it was EXACTLY what I needed right now. I think one of the hardest things about going minimalist is keeping up the new habits. I went minimalist in August 2020, and while it has gotten easier, I still find it hard to maintain the correct headspace required to declutter. One trick I do is to move things to the boot of my car as a sort of 'holding bay'. I leave them there, and if after a few days/weeks I'm not missing anything (or I can't even remember what's in there) then I take it all to the charity shop. The advantage of this system is that it makes me super keen to get rid of it so I can have a nice empty car again, plus I sort of get the declutter-serotonin-hit twice.
@@energeticconfidentlady4254 Actually, I say “charity shop“ because that’s what I did with my preloved items for years, but recently I found a lady who distributes to the poor, so I’ve been taking it to her. I too prefer this instead of giving it to someone who is going to make money off it.
The last rule... that's why I decided to declutter my place. I was tired of the "eternal" shuffling of things... 😳🤣
Ran straight to my wardrobe & took a 3 piece Suit (Tweed) & a fav white tuxedo shirt & donated it 💕 it's a size too small. (& I feel great) Thx Gabe! Awesome tips...
Great rules and tips. Thank you for sharing! I am just starting my minimalist journey and your videos have been really helpful! 🙏🏽
Yes, I do believe decluttering is a process and a journey of sorts. I enjoy your videos. You have a fan here from Malaysia :)
Liking the video before watching it. That’s the vibe. 👌 👍 ✅
🎸🔥☕🙏
I like your vids soo much🤗 Reason which motivates me to keep decluttering is that it makes cleaning much easier! Which is soo important for me bcs I am of those pple who can't work or focus in unclean or messy place with visual clutter!
I'm glad they can help!
@@GabeBult Thanks for taking time to connect with ur audience 🌷❤
Thank you for saying that about getting depressed after decluttering and the highs and lows. All I was hearing was how great I was supposed to feel, but I only felt high while I was doing it and for the first week after, but then I crashed pretty hard. It became clear which problems and feelings the decluttering fixed (A LOT) and how much it didn't (also kind of a lot) and I definitely got depressed for a bit.
Brilliant as always 🤟🏼🌿Thank you
I’m moving to a 400 sq ft tiny house in 4 days! Major decluttering happening over here. I’ve been removing things from my life for over a year, my hubby- just starting. I love these rules. I’ll share them with him.
Yes agree with u , I live in a tiny flat I get rid of major un needed stuff at last month! & still in progress. Me & my husband feeling so much relax with more space, cleaning also is very easy & stressless!
Have an awesome adventure!!
How's your new space? I'm blessed with 600sqft! My husband would have to live down the hall.
I watched this while doing something else and thought I'd watch again sometime to write down the rules but I see you have done that. I find it much more helpful to have things posted where I can see them daily or glance at them when I need to. Thank you. For #10 I am going to write down my whys.
Nice advice
Gabe, thank you for your videos there always helpful. Your vids inspire me to become more recognizable about clutter and to save money. Keep up the great content you make.
Great video!!! Thanks!
I do like having a timeout box for some things. I don't do it for everything, but its useful for clothes and seeing what you actually wear (turn the hanger around indicates its unused, when you use it, its hung the regular way), and I used a timeout box when I try to reduce more of the stuff in my kitchen. I reduced the number of plates and bowls I have. Time out box proved I didnt miss it at all.
Nice picture of your bro & the gray haired man.
Thanks it's my dad and us

Great content, beautiful shots, subtle humour.
Hello from Hungary. 🇭🇺
Thanks for all your pointers. My goal this year is going from just getting rid of clutter to becoming a minimalist. What a difference. Makes life a whole lot better. Thanks for sharing.
@@livingthedreamandmore2939Some things you can never toss and that is okay. I wrote my dear mum a note 52 years ago before she passed. That will stay with me forever ❤🙏
Im guilty with the last one haha this vid helps a lot. Keep it up man! 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
I also still hoard like old phone, power cords, and laptop batteries just because they are hard to dispose of and we have no toxic waste disposal in my town. I could just put them in the garbage but it can contribute to ground water toxicity. One of these days I will mail them somewhere... one of these days....
awesome rules. thank you for sharing. great content as always. this has made me think about my own rules. 🤔
Cool coffee maker. 👀
These are great tips! Gabe is the man! 😎👍🏼
One thing I like to do is MOVE everything MYSELF. I don’t hire movers. If you want to truly understand what & how much useless stuff you own, moving everything yourself is a spiritual awakening unlike any other. You will EMBRACE minimalism forever after. 😅😅
Thank you so much!!
I love your points on wardrobe - when I was younger I thought I have to renew constantly my wardrobe, buying this and that: when at the end you end up putting the same things...
Or thinking that if I wouldn’t be in that place: I wouldn’t buy it. So why do I even bother now?
I think the question why is powerful, behind any reasoning as you said:)
Thanks for the video!
Yey, new haircut.. ❤️
Matt D'avella style.
Now you're in my territory. LOL I had an organizing business and decluttering was the largest part of it. Just today I gave away some things that I was keeping to give as gifts but that never happened. Then a friend of mine created a local online auction to help with getting some funds for a local family in need. She came over and picked up those things.
When I had my business I declined a couple jobs for one of the reasons you mentioned. They only wanted stuff moved from one part of the house to another. I wasn't about to do that because there's no learning curve there.
In my place there is no junk drawer anywhere. I have few kitchen utensils and I cook a lot. Those utensils sit in a tall container on top of the stove. Things like scissors, tape dispensers etc, are in a drawer in my file cabinet in a flatware tray that I got at the dollar store, so I can see what I have and I don't end up with 10 of one thing. For my sewing table, I have a small plastic 3 drawer unit that I keep my needles and other sewing essentials in. I made a board with pegs to hold my threads so I can see when I'm getting low an any color. That hangs on the wall which takes up no space.
I'm using the same pots and pans I bought 10 years ago. They still do the job and are in good shape. I own one purse and it's tan and goes with everything. One pair of winter boots and one winter coat. I crochet so I made my own beanie and matching neck scarf.
One of the things I gave away today was my old spice jar collection as I found something that works better and saves space. The others are still in great condition. One of many things I told my clients was to not get rid of something they are using till it literally falls apart. Replace it then and only then so there is no double buying and then you can't find it later.
I am just here for the biceps honestly
😂
Hahaha 🤣
I'm more of a minimalist than I thought, only the top of my toothbrush I use, the rest is toast. I need to break down & buy a new toothbrush!
I’ve been taking advantage of the goodwill store lately. It’s an excellent place to donate most household goods. I’ve been gradually cleaning out over the past month and will continue to do so. It will make my upcoming move (next year) a lot easier.
Food pantries and shelters would love your castoffs
Throughout the pandemic have there been times where you wish you’d held on to certain things? Are there things you regret getting rid of due to shortages and that type of thing?
imagine traveling with a travel vest and nothing more. forget about even a daypack, just a travel vest, 100% hands free! it is really freeing and can be done once you figure out what works for you and what you can live without in exchange for freedom
I am no longer allowing myself to put anything under my mind because that would mean I just don't value that stuff as much (out of sight out of mind). I am also condensing all of my stuff to either my office space or my bedroom (college student still living with parents) so that it forces me to choose what fits in the limited space I have as if I live in an apartment
I feel kinda guilty for decluttering my wardrobe. I only own between 40 more leaning on 50 clothing items now (excluding underwear/socks/ pyjamas) and I actually got rid of a whole lot, adopted the one in one out rule.
The problem is that I changed close to 80-90% percent of the original items, because I didn't even like those. I liked nearly none of the clothing items I owned and one by one replaced them. That obviously has cost me a lot of time searching and money (not thaaaat much because second hand, but still). And I feel like buying a new wardrobe is the least minimalist/sustainable thing you can do and that kinda makes me feel guilty.
If anyone even reads this thank you for your time :)
@@larae.5553 I get your concern, but don't forget that when it comes to wrecking nature big companies are the actual problem :/ don't make yourself more responsible then you really are, and remember you're getting into a new lifestyle, where, from now on, you'll only buy what you actually need
I recently counted how many spatulas I used in 24 hours and it was about 6 but I'm sure I am unusual there. Also, I looked up cut shirts and was sad to see they are a mens only brand, they look super nice!
I subbed. Thank you for awesome videos!

I’m just getting started with the 30- day minimalism challenge but in reverse, so on day one I decluttered 30 things, hopefully I’ll complete the challenge
👏☕
I need the accountability in my decluttering. Altho busy this is a goal I need to meet.
@@honorablelady1590 it doesn’t actually take too long. I spend around 20- 30 minutes picking different things and then I separate them into what I want to donate/sell/gift, what goes to the trash and what I can repurpose. It looks like it takes a lot of time but it really doesn’t!
Brilliant!
Have you ever felt your own words used against you? Lol
I need a shovel, i have to declutter my car again today & just did my other one tuesday. I can't keep up.
:D I just went through all my documents yesterday and got ride of more than 1/3
@@shakeitoff5148 sometimes its time to say goodbye. A lot of people think it's a form of love keeping things. But actually it just matters if you love your kids and remember a beautiful time. 🪔
Cool! I joined the ifUiWill challenge in the link! This should be fun.
Awesome I look forward to it!
I did also. I think this will help me feel good and a load off. The focus I want is self care & many know going back to the basics of exercise, proper sleep& proper eating brings more success to life. Not all the distractions. Cutting through non essentials for me.
Geat video and ideas! but what is that globe in the background showing? I've been fascinated by it throughout the whole video haha
I got some overalls and an overcoat in pretty sure I need to declutter. I think their super cool but I have yet to use them. But also I wonder if that's also just because currently no one goes out cuz of covid.
❤❤❤
I usually try to stick to rules for decluttering... and fail miserably. In the moment I get caught up with feelings "well, yes, I *said* that any clothes not used in the past *5* *years* was leaving, but what IF..." 😅.
I'll get better at it !
Past five years.ha
@@denisecarter5117 Probably more around 7 or 8, but shhhh...
Today I already ran out to DMV and noticed again my habits of a mess after cleaning my car. So now I have a trash bag system.
Electronics specialized accessories is something I still struggle to part with. Like if I declutter that GameCube power supply, how will I replace it? Nevermind that I haven't played GameCube since college and I am now 36...
I’ve been thinking about your previous video and the week poster; have you considered making a (shorter-timed poster) such as a poster for three years but the squares are days instead of years? For some reason, I thought the posters were three years, even though you clearly explained the squares in the video.(After I rewatched)
Thanks! 👏🏼👍🏼
That would definitely be cool but right now I really have no desire to create my own poster
Man I really love your videos, they really inspire me to make better videos myself.
Thanks! ☕
Great ideas! What about the idea to rotate all the clothes in your closet so they’re hanging up on backwards hangers and mark that date down. When you wear something, hang it back on a hanger the right way and whatever is still hanging backwards at the end of the year get rid of… If you haven’t worn it in a year they say you never will. 😆
Great idea!!
Gifts from my kids (stuffed animals, drawings, perfume that are too strong etc.) what do I do? Some of it I like but I don’t like the clutter. Plus, my kids live at home so they’ll notice lol
Great video! Love your channel!
Where can I get this cool Gadget for the coffee making, the French press thingy?
Greetings from Germany!
Just Amazon it's called a airo press
@@GabeBult thank you so much for your answer!
I do need dupes of certain kitchen items bc I do not run my dishwasher every day.
💯💯💯💯💯💯
Spatulas/spoons/etc. Ugh, I have so many, as well as cookie sheets/backing pans and I cannot bring myself to get rid of them. Honestly, I feel like I have enough to last me the rest of my life so why get rid of them now, but a crock and two large drawers full still annoys me.
Please tell me you didn't throw out that salt rock
I like very much Your point of view it’s healthy 💛🤍
I dun think decluttering should be a habit, but rather go through what you have on a regular basis. The goal is to have less stuff, not decluttering for the sake of decluttering. I did a couple rounds of major decluttering, then several months later, I played The Mins Game (www.theminimalists.com/game/) for the first time and only got to Day 9. Last Dec, I played it again, and got to Day 15. Now I intend to do it every 3 months, but the aim is to be aware and stop when I feel there's nothing else to throw.
Great videos! I'm based in the UK and just recently come across your work. Really enjoyed the content. Iv been reading alot about this topic and realised how much easier it is to watch a video instead.
Thanks bro! Your stories are always inspiring, and I’m becoming minimalist because I’m watching your videos a lot. Haha 👍😃
Glad to hear it!
The most common time I feel guilt when decluttering is when I’ve used an item and realized it’s not for me, but it isn’t in a condition to donate. So I will be trashing the item. Sometimes I will try to donate it anyway, but honestly donation centers throw out such a big percentage of the donations they receive that I know in the end it will be thrown out. I try to be intentional when purchasing, but I’m human and still make mistakes.
We all are human. I give myself grace.
Don’t marry a hoarder like I did!!🤣🤣. I’ve learned I can only declutter my things and he has gotten better too. He still hoards but mostly in his outside area...the barn and workshop. It’s a process.....
The process must be handled gently and with love especially with our loved ones. Decluttering within the family can bring strife and anger if we keep throwing their things as if their things doesn’t matter to them.
Happy Days.
ive decluttered quite a bit and the stuff im hanging onto now is only because fear of having a child soon and tryng to save every penny cant afford to buy new clothes
what's with all the coffee shots?
I suck at b roll
Like the lighting in the background. The lamp, spotlight & string lights. Let the eyes wander while provide warm video, nicely done.
As far as decluttering, for me I ask myself do I really need this? The answer is most often no. Another thing I try to think of, is one in one out rule. If you buy something, it’s to replace or upgrade something so that helps sometimes too. Decluttering is definitely an ongoing conscious process & prevention is more crucial than the cure.
That was the idea! Glad you enjoy it
I helped my parents move house a couple of years ago. While there was a good amount of purging, one of the things that really takes up space is photos. Boxes and boxes of photos, albums, scrapbooks...all that shit. None of us are the type who look at old photos yet somehow my parents became the repository of decades of family ephemera. The moment they die I'm shoveling all of it into the trash.
I myself can't throw away a lot of pictures. I work on my family history to understand myself & my roots better.
@@rubyred765 That's understandable. My family isn't into that so I think it's more no one wants to be the one to throw that stuff away, except me. And my mother to an extent. Y'know, keep the best of the best but photos where no one has any idea who the people are? Trash'em.
@@dergluckliche4973 I see your point. I did go thru the meaningless ones. I tried to look at it from every angle. Also if the info is written the pic may be useless. Duplicate pictures I gave to others
What camera do you use? If you don’t mind me asking
maybe I'm just cold-hearted and the gifts are the easiest things that for me to declutter
5:36 DUUUUUDE. I'm listening to your video in the middle of work. That loud bang just scared the living thing out of me.
This time the impact of the impactant transition had too munch impact. Seriously. -.-
That aside, I'm enjoying your video. Smart and life changing content.
Key steps to being a minimalist UA-camr: wear neutral colours, have 4 of the same t shirts, keep a bar of soap, toothbrush and razor, sandals and fancy coffee equipment. Done.
How much cost this app? I can not find any info, thx 🙂
It's free
Right there...coincidence or not? Indecision and guilt are motivation killer. I regret getting rid of a few things, mainly sentimental. It’s been a year ans I can’t get over it. Any way, maybe that’s why I’m holding onto silly stuff like expensive dresses I hardly used that I’m trying to sell...haven’t even posted them yet 🤦🏻♀️
Not keeping someone else’s memories like their work awards, concert tickets that you didn’t attend, photos that you can’t identify the scene or the people.
Do you pay rent or do you own your own house?
