Couldn’t agree more! We are moving and have been decluttering as we pack and it feels like we’ve lost weight as we get rid of stuff we just don’t use! No need for all the clutter in life.
I agree except with the outdated food, because best before dates are actually made up to cause us to buy more stuff. (Some exceptions of course, but anything dry like pasta won't outdate for years.) So while spices might lose potency and things like condiments go mouldy after a while, there are many, many foods that are still perfectly usable well past the date. :) Thanks for the great video...going to go get rid of some old email now.
Thank you! Exact what I thought. Think to throw away everything other the date is a horrible advice. Is this something American do typically? Think many ppl in germany try not to waste perfectly good food. The best before date is something to make money and some legal security for the company's to not get sued.

I took my used (washed) towels, sheets, and blankets to our local shelter. I knew some dogs and/or cats would benefit so much more than the garbage truck!

Did a HUGE paper declutter about a year ago. Now I have a small box that I declutter every month when I do bills. So nice to not have that silent todo item nagging me in the background.

Everything on the list is so true. Especially with the clothes. Also I would add to this is pictures on my phone. I have a million screenshots that need to be deleted.
I'm improving hanging onto clutter from my mailbox. Getting rid of the junk is getting easier for me. You have some valid points of excess stuff you mentioned. I started downsizing a kitchen cabinet yesterday. Now I have room for some of the things I actually use.

Go Gabe! Agree with all of these. Always looking for ways everyday to get rid of things. It’s been more challenging with two babies but it’s still possible 🙏🏻😀
A marker or a marker and white tape is your foods friend. I put the exp. date on the label or lid big enough and clear enough to read quickly. I do it as I put the groceries away, so nothing gets missed. It takes just a few extra minutes and if something is within a month of expiring, I know that I need to use it soon and it doesn't get weird in the cabinet.
Every day we haul stuff out of our car. We're gaining space! It's on our daily chore list. Decluttered a basket that was on our coffee table. Now there is a smaller container sitting there.

A lot of the stuff I have was my husband's... he died in February 2020. It's so hard to get rid of his things because I feel guilty like he will get upset about it. Also, every time I get rid of something that was his, I feel like I am losing another part of him. I know that isn't logical, but I can't help it.
@David Rawsthorn Thank you, David, for this truly appreciated gift. ❣I know I can answer that question without any hesitation; my husband adored me as much as I did him. When I asked myself that question, I could picture him looking at me lovingly and saying (as he often did when I worried about things), "It doesn't matter." I don't know if I could ever be with another man, but I do know I need to move forward with this different version of myself. This one thing has held me back.
Because of streaming services, I have donated all of my CD’s and DVD’s. After doing this, I was able to donate the entertainment center where I stored them and free up so much space in my living room. I now enjoy that empty space. The clutter is gone. It freed up time from having to dust and clean it regularly. ☺️ 😊 🌻 ☮️ 💕 💫
In the spring, we sold the 3 bedroom home I've lived in for 50 years and decided to rent. At various times it's been my wife, 5 children, parents, in-laws . . . also living there. Everyone came, everyone brought their stuff, and when they left, they left their stuff. We filled a 12 cu. yd. dumpster, at least 20 contractor bags, boxes on the curb, donations to church flea markets, sold some; and we moved to the rental. We found we don't like renting. We bought a home and now everything has to be moved again. Stuff we thought we wanted has become more stuff to be rid of. If you don't do it right along, it truly does become a nightmare you find you're living in when it has to be done all at once.

It is remarkable how much clutter just finds its way to get in a home 🧐
I am in the process of doing this. It's been a difficult process as well as cathartic. I just don't have the space for all my stuff. The process of elimination I choose is a percentage. My goal is 70% donate , 30% keep.
I've been working on getting my partner to declutter for a couple of years. We are looking at moving soon, so this helps. I found your channel a couple of days ago, and am going to watch while next to him. Get more ideas to sink in

Great video! I shouldn’t have told my husband about a story on the radio today. The actor who played Biff on “Back to the Future” got $75,000 for a new in box wrapped VHS tape of the show. He was convinced that VHS would be around always, never opened it So my husband immediately went to his VHS collection and thought about what he could keep. I had to remind him these were all “new inbox!” But I think he’s gonna be hanging onto some of them. Oh well I do the FlyLady cleaning system. Friday is Car and purse /wallet day. It’s a day to make sure your car is in order, with gas, I’m not a mess of trash. Same with my purse. It’s really helpful
A few others: Clear your first aid box / medicine cabinet. Yes, they do expire - even dressings & creams. Make up expires too. On the packaging there is a picture of a little pot & it will have a number e.g. 12, 24, 6. This is how many months your make up is good, once opened.
there's something calling washing, you can wash old sheets and towels and they will be as good as new. no need to buy new ones unless they have holes and start fall appart
After many years, you need to replace regardless of holes or not because of all the embedded bacteria. Your clothes are never fully clean especially with leftover residue of laundry detergent and softener. I just learned about clothes stripping and what still comes out of them.
In listening to your video, I heard 2 primary reasons why we keep things we do not need. Future use/guilt. I have a horrible issue with clutter, and appreciate your clear approach. You might reach even more of us with ways to deal with those two excuses. Looking forward to that.
Items you haven't sold- another option is to list them as for a swap or trade! That way you can "get your money's worth" by exchanging them for something you actually need or would use or need to buy, and likewise so does the other person! That's what I've been doing during my decluttering process with items I've listed for sale that aren't selling, and it's been fun and mutually beneficial to parties to get rid of their item that is clutter to them in exchange for something they need or want and will actually use!
Thanks for this video. Implementing already some of those advises, and some I might need to revisit (looking at my kitchen especially;). For the Festivities, I've started to use only a little ornaments I like and cherish for years and the rest is all "to be used up". If I want to treat myself with an ornament, it is either a candy that can be put on the tree and then eaten up (I have now 30days to eat my Xmas decor XD), or a tematu candle, that will be used up during the festive time. Same with new house decor, although here I still have to improve.
I went through my list of movies and programs on Amazon prime and cleared out every one except Little House on the Prairie and the pressure to decide what to watch is gone! When Little House is done, all 204 episodes we will pick something else. No more watch lists for me, just one at a time.
I discovered you recently and really like your content! Awesome video as well! Just one thing: Please don‘t just throw away food because of the expiration date! This date doesn‘t mean it‘s bad already. Check it first (look - smell - taste). Don’t waste food. If you don’t want to eat it, give it friends or someone else! :) cheers!
Btw, LOVE your channel Gabe! I subscribed!!! Your content, that I've seen so far (3 or 4 videos lol), is almost identical to how I think and feel!!! I've been up and down throughout life with major decluttering, then things accumulate, then people GIVE you lots of free stuff because they think you're in need, and it's nice stuff but doesn't actually get used, going thrifting for recreation etc etc etc... Recently, things changed drastically in my life, which has really changed my relationship with "stuff". Since October 2021, I'm been on a committed journey... by no means am I as far along as where you are currently, and I agree everyone is very different it terms of their goals and comfort, but certainly taking daily strides to get to a place where I can feel comfortable and stress free about my surroundings! I've been feeling very alone in the process, as not everyone around me understands some of the reasonings that I have about less is more, less is less stress, etc etc etc, but now I know I am most definitely NOT ALONE!!! THANK YOU!!! Fawn 😊
At a senior living place that I used to work they would have a recycle receptacle right next to the mailboxes so residents could just throw the junk mail away as soon as they pulled it from their box. It didn't even have to make it back to their apartment! Wallet: I put little used punch cards in a separate zipper wallet in my car, but then I don't have it when I need it. I forget to take it out until I'm at the check stand already. Pantry: what do you do with something like rock salt that you use to make ice cream once in a blue moon?
If I make it at least once a year, I keep it. But I have a ridiculous amount of storage in my house and 2(!) Pantries. One we keep our food in and the other is canning supplies and our once a year stuff. If you aren't blessed w an excess of space, (which is a position I have been in many times in other homes), decide if the cost of buying it once a year is a cost you can justify? Or if it's pricey if you can find an out of the way place to store it?
Spices are fine Most items that are expired are fine for years afterwards. My husband and I always say if this was a zombie apocalypse, would we care? If it looks fine, it’s fine,
@@diamondsandrubies1487 Keep medical, taxes, rent receipts/mortgage, deeds, anything extremely important. With taxes , you can get rid of them after 7 years and bills you paid after a year, bank statement after 2 years but check them when you get them because of errors sometimes. You can Google anything I missed because I was wondering also what to get rid of, a few years ago because I didn't want to throw out anything important.
Hello Gabe! I would like to make a suggestion for your videos to come. I have been following you for a while now and the videos are so cool! However, minimalism can only be explained a certain amount of times otherwise it can get a bit repetitive. Therefore, I think it would be fantastic if you could use your minimalism skills to start talking about "interior design" (and related topics) but from a manly point of view. I would love to get ideas on how to decorate my apartment with masculine decoration tips (the minimalistic way). For me, it is not as important what we can get rid of but what we actually need as human beings to live a happy life. Very often we think we need things we don't need and opening a debate about what really matters and what is needed in life, would be fantastic. Thanks in advance and I wish you the best of luck! UL.

Not sure if you’ll see this but I have a question: do you have sentimental items stored away, like in your parents attic? I’m a teenager trying to declutter but it’s hard to make decisions over stuff like childhood toys or stuff I drew/ wrote at age 6, even though I barely look at them or enjoy them. This is amplified with the babyhood stuff I don’t even remember, like the blanket I brought home from the hospital. Any advice/perspective from anyone would be nice, because honestly I’m struggling.
Take pictures of the sentimental stuff that you're going to get rid of and keep the rest. If it brings you joy, keep, if not, toss. That's the Konmarie method. It's on UA-cam. I don't know if I spelled it correctly but you shouldn't have trouble finding it. It's popular!
It is good to think about keeping only what you Love. The collection continues as years pass. I am now older, and very overwhelmed. Save yourself the grief.
What are some other things your getting rid of?

Thanks for this video. Implementing already some of those advises, and some I might need to revisit (looking at my kitchen especially;). For the Festivities, I've started to use only a little ornaments I like and cherish for years and the rest is all "to be used up". If I want to treat myself with an ornament, it is either a candy that can be put on the tree and then eaten up (I have now 30days to eat my Xmas decor XD), or a tematu candle, that will be used up during the festive time. Same with new house decor, although here I still have to improve.
Best Before dates are actually just suggestions to eat the food at it's yummiest. Open the food to check for nasty scents and mold.
I went through my list of movies and programs on Amazon prime and cleared out every one except Little House on the Prairie and the pressure to decide what to watch is gone! When Little House is done, all 204 episodes we will pick something else. No more watch lists for me, just one at a time.
Excellent! So much of this rings true!
. . . pure and simple, just thanks
:) cheers!
Thank you for the great video ❤
👍🔥
Fawn 😊
Good points! I’m going to declutter the kitchen again.
💯🔥
Appreciate all the video footage with each point that makes it “real”.
Spices are fine Most items that are expired are fine for years afterwards. My husband and I always say if this was a zombie apocalypse, would we care? If it looks fine, it’s fine,
Declutter, toss your expired cosmetics, especially the liquid eyeliner, gloss, mascara.
Would you consider making a video on the paperwork you do keep?
Really?
That’s PRIVATE.
@@smileandsaycheese44 In what way? A system to organize paperwork doesn't have to be personal at all.
@@smileandsaycheese44 If I had asked for his personal financial records than that would justify your reply.
Have a great New Year 😀
@@diamondsandrubies1487 Keep medical, taxes, rent receipts/mortgage, deeds, anything extremely important. With taxes , you can get rid of them after 7 years and bills you paid after a year, bank statement after 2 years but check them when you get them because of errors sometimes. You can Google anything I missed because I was wondering also what to get rid of, a few years ago because I didn't want to throw out anything important.
@@mickeyrosa7226 I keep everything now. I had gotten rid of way too much before I understood how serious money is.
Agree with all the points 👍 love from 🇮🇳
UL.
Oh, the post-holiday refridgerator clean-out is tonighT
i like your sustainable silverware- the quirk adds character
I don’t know why you didn’t like your “If it’s just in case, it doesn’t have a place” rhyme. I love that.
Happy New Year and YES this video is valuable and I have "followed" this method for quite sometime now. Kudos!!
Holy smokes! I just looked in the description and saw " we need a kick in the pants". .. That motivates me!
it happens lol
Me : trying to read your wrist tattoo 😂
Going to go through my Christmas decorations ☺️
Season Greetings! Thanks for all the great videos.
Happy holidays Pat!
I gave 4 china platters to a local group to use for receptions. I use metal trays. I got rid of costume jewelry I haven't worn. I gave some gorgeous crafting paper
to my neighbor who makes cards. I try to find at least 15 things every day to declutter. Tina, Al's wife
👏🔥
15 things a day!! Wow, that’s a great job 👏🏼
Love these videos- they really do help declutter my mind when cleaning up my cluttered apt
The red shirt suits you well
That last one really spoke to me!
That sell box. Get over it. Just get rid. It's never going to happen 🤣
when you said declutter your car, i thought you meant get rid of the whole thing😂
That too lol
We are selling my car to pay down debt on my husbands pick-up. Makes me sad to let it go, it’s a great car, but we are in a position to share, so no time like the present.
Excellent, Gabe! A list of decluttering tasks delivered with enthusiasm. I'm going to replay this once a week to spur me into action!
Hey Gabe, loving your videos man! Very inspirational. What does your tattoo on your wrist say?
Your rhyme was totally good.
Sofrito and Goya products 😅👏🏼

It's funny to me that you remember everything but the hair salon and grooming.. I'm at a loss here.
mvp of the month
Thank you 😊
If it is food in a can😃😃it doesn't go off quickly, regardless of the date!
We must all have out of date spices! I do, it would help if they made the BBD easily visible.
cool video and very useful for a new year's resolution....
It"s funny to me that you remember everything but the hair salon and grooming.. I"m at a loss here.

I’m learning alot from you. Also, you are gorgeous by the way! Thank you for all that you do!!
The car is a tip 😀
Ahaha i should have follow your advise yo declutter fridge/grocery cupboard before Christmas.... Today looking at the left over from Xmas I notice i served dry mushrooms to my guest which have expired since 2012 😂😂😂😂
Not sure if you’ll see this but I have a question: do you have sentimental items stored away, like in your parents attic? I’m a teenager trying to declutter but it’s hard to make decisions over stuff like childhood toys or stuff I drew/ wrote at age 6, even though I barely look at them or enjoy them. This is amplified with the babyhood stuff I don’t even remember, like the blanket I brought home from the hospital. Any advice/perspective from anyone would be nice, because honestly I’m struggling.
I don't have any of that really but that's just me. Those doing bring me to much joy or value but it's different for everyone
Got rid of Refrigerator and TV 💚
Great video
Thanks
