My young daughter told me once 'I was looking really forward for this new phone - and once I had it, this good feeling was gone.' You just learned a lesson for life, I told her.
💯🔥
There are two ways of being unhappy : not getting what you want is one, getting what you want is the other one
1. "I wanted it" rather than "do I need it long-term?"
2. "It was convenient" especially with online shopping and sales.
3. "To make myself feel better," using shopping to give yourself a dopamine high, but it won't improve your overall happiness. It's a bad coping mechanism.
4. "It was on sale" but did you really need that thing? You are still spending more money than you would have if you didn't buy it.
5. "Forgetting about stuff" set up auto pay and remember to return things to avoid fees.
6. "Thinking you can afford it," it's a trap and you end up paying more instead of saving money which can cause a lot of stress in the future. Just because you can buy something doesn't mean you should.
7. "Buying under duress," wait so you don't buy stuff on impulse. Make sure you are in the right mental state before you make any big or small purchases, and eat before you go grocery shopping.
8. "Not counting the little things" it really adds up. You can't reach your monetary goals this way. You can't save up for anything you need in the future.
9. " You get strong armed into it" they create a fear of missing out but it's a scam. There is no scarcity.
10. "To impress people" it effects a lot of us especially when we are younger because we don't have our priorities in order yet.

That is what I needed
Thanks so much

My "I'm sad" routine. Fuzzy blankets, warm kitty, peppermint tea, and Downton Abbey. Works everytime
I don’t have any other social media besides UA-cam. But I just want to let you know how refreshing your channel is, it’s a daily reminder I can go back to and remember what living simple is really about.
My former self was guilty of all these. I shudder thinking about it. Glad I learned.
Reached out to someone yesterday who is struggling. Sometimes the best advice is from those who have been thru it.
Teaching your kids....soo important. We don't want them to repeat our habits. Kids are a mirror of our flaws & a great motivation to us.
The worst money wasting habit I have is spending money to feel attractive. Skincare. Makeup. Clothes. Even though I'm fully aware that my worth isn't tied to my attractiveness, thats something I still struggle with and am working to break away from. Dismissing vanity and accepting myself will save money.
Daily accountability helps me to stay on track. Anything worth value takes work.
The more we are grounded, the more we won't react to sales, & approval from others.
I have found myself buying things to "treat myself" far too often but I'm starting to break the cycle of rewarding myself with a purchase.
I've definitely fallen into that as well
Yep. I try to take care of myself with small things. Today is reading a book.
Also the gym costs but it is just worth it to me.
Cooking a favorite meal.
Soo easy to let it get out of control when you have money, easier sometimes when you just don't have it. Like a natural discipline.

Don't make decisions when you are:
Hungry
Angry
Lonely
Tired

@@rh7968 Just heard it yesterday in a sermon on being wise in all areas of life.

@@FantasiaBliss123 😊 I know impossible standards some times. Just trying to keep the why I do things in mind. Funny how we pick up so much influence in our lives by those we have been surrounded by without realizing it.
After I got laid off, I realized that I was wasting A LOT of money. 🤦♀️
You notice it more when the income stops u had the same thing
True. I realized while not working I didn't 'need' a lot of things I thought I needed.
Look at it as a lesson learned. you wont do again. Its a hard lesson but enlightening
When we don't prioritize our sleep we aren't optimizing ourselves the next day.
I find sleep fascinating, for me it is the fountain of youth. I can't explain how sleep or lack of affects me.
Nice plant, and nice "do less" sign 😅 ...definitely fell into the "sale" money wasting trap, we all do
Thanks 👍 I got to tell you that plant is dying I haven't watered it in like 3 months lol
@@GabeBult dam man give that little plant some love
Wow !!! You hit the nail on the head with the $1 and $5 charges. Every month I do that...my credit card bill is pretty high. Thank you for creating and posting this.
Not buying stuff you don't need is definitely powerful and difficult.
True.
Since covid started I fell off my minimalism path and just recently I returned all the stuff I got from online shopping and starting back to the fundamentals. Buy things you need, buy things that actually add value, prioritize saving and investing
I remembered an experience while I'm pretty young. My father went to a Bicycle Store alongwith me and asked for the price of a Bicycle. It was little bit costly. So my father asked " Is there any discount?" A mechanic replied " 100% discount if you don't buy it ! ". It's was a lesson for lifetime for me. ❤️
Gabe you impress people by being you. You have the guts to not do what's not necessary and that has helped me a lot.
Videos are always on point! You really made my day and are helping me get on track with my goals. Thank you Gabe!
Glad they can help!
you are so inspiring and funny at the same time! thank you for what you are doing!
Very unique videos. A good balance.
Great suggestions, This is such an important topic to be discussing right now, I really enjoyed the video!
💯🔥
My biggest problem is thinking, "if I don't like it, I can always return it". But truth about myself (which I really know) is that I almost never get around to returning anything I later do not like or want.
i luv ur vids man, instant gratification is way too common in today's society n learning to control it is huge
Good information, honest opinions...good to know you can admit to making money mistakes and then take the time to teach us. Thank you
Thanks for this dude, these videos are priceless.
Stay safe!
Good things to remember. Like your “real ness” and you make me smile with your charm. Keep up to good work Gabe.
I'm in the process of clearing out the clutter in my life and it has been AWESOME! I have accumulated so many things that I don't use anymore. I have never been a spender, but I do like to eat out wayy too much. So I'm working on that... lol Thanks for sharing!
👍🔥💯
I think our society is too deep into the instant gratification. I want it and I want it now. They realize it does not make them happy but they fall into that trap again and again
Great content. Really enjoying your material and ideas.
and we love you back !
Thanks for the encouragement bro! Always straight to the point, no frills and unscripted. Manila, Philippines here 👍🏼
Thanks I'll though a pin in for ya
Thank you for your convenient point being "it's easy to buy because its right there" and not "you don't have to put a lot of effort into it/it makes things minorly easier."
😅 It's been kind of frustrating to be told by other minimalist advice I'm wasting money on "unnecessary" things that make life in chronic pain significantly more managable.
Just want to say I love your videos :) Keep it up!
This is good content. I’m definitely guilty of doing all these things at some point in my life. I’ve gotten better but still have my time where i struggle to listen to myself.
It's definitely a long-term game

You can go broke saving money ... love this ! Its so true you see that item and its a good price , but then sits away in your home unused for months untill you donate it ... done that sooooo many times .

I’m getting better and better at not wasting my money lately
Now I’m working on not eating my money
I’m learning cheap, healthy recipes but even then it’s hard to not waste lots of money doing the groceries
Great point don't eat your money lol
We are having the slow cooker do all the work today.
I buy the nicest "go phone" only when my phone dies, every so many years. I have had this one since March 2016 for only $129. I have had people look at me as if im crazy because i dont have a newer phone. So glad i dont care what people think.
My issue is eating out. I usually get 2 meals per meal, but $15 or $20 isn't cheap for 2 meals.
That’s great! My smartphone it’s from March 2016 😂 until the speaker or charging slot dies, will not but one 🤞🏼

Charging slot is acting up. I'm trying to wait until they come up with a "go phone" that is 5g available.

@@GabeBult I am from Berthierville, Quebec, Canada. Not far from Montreal.
Hi! I recently toke a good look at my expenses the last 2 years and other then clothes, gym memberships and eating out, one thing stood up to me the most. COFFEES ☕️! So many $ a month spent on it. Your right, multiple 5$ here and there does add up!!! It was a wake up call.
I'm not a money expert, but these are things I wasted money on:
1. I paid a ton of money on a porcelain crown that broke 2 years later. Metal is cheaper and stronger, so now I know not to listen to the 'experts'. The tooth was at the back anyway, nobody sees it. I also had dental bonding on my front tooth. It lasted about a year, tooth looks chipped again, plus more filed down since they had to for the bonding. I guess if the chip drastically changes your face it's worth it, but not for small chips.
2. Most of the money that I've spent are on doctors that can't help me. ER visits have been the biggest waste. There isn't a way around that because if you feel like you're dying, you just might.
3. Buying clothes without trying them on first is a waste of money. I try to use fitting rooms if I can. Returning stuff is a hassle.
4. Buying clothes online is a waste of money because you can't try them on, especially shoes. Trying to return stuff from on-line is a hassle, just like trying to resell them. There is some clothing and shoes I've bought on-line that I love, but the majority was a waste of money. I think twice now before buying anything new.
5. Buying certain items in supermarkets and drugstores. They're cheaper on-line. (example: cat litter, garbage bags, cat food, etc)
6. Buying gifts is a waste of money. Most people want gift cards so they can buy what they want.
7. Paying for pet medicine at the vet is a waste of money, it's cheaper online.
8. Buying cheap clothes is a waste of money because after one wash it's faded, wrinkled and shrunk. There are rare exceptions to this. If you're lucky you'll find one, but for all the money spent on the wasted ones, you could have bought something better for the combined price.
9. I did Japanese straightening and it didn't work so the guy did it twice and half my hair broke off and bits were still curly. I use to have my hair straightened and put under that heat helmet that reminds me of a torture chamber. As soon as I stepped out of the salon, my hair went pouf like a brillo pad. This has happened every time, no matter who does my hair. Apparently I have resistant hair? Waste of money for me. I do my own nails too. I don't like the smell of acetone in the salons.
10. Buying anything full price. Exceptions are things that expire. Sometimes things are on sale because they are close to expiration date.
11. Buying things without reading enough reviews first. You were warned, you just didn't look.
12. Beauty Boxes: if you're picky like me, it's a waste. Better to buy a full priced item you will like.
13. Hobbies: best to have hobbies that are free.
14. Autopay? Keep an eye on this. They make mistakes.
I keep wasting stoopid money on $1 reading glasses, the plastic/ glass pops.
Ok when you sluuurped the coffee from your fingers I laughed and wished I could subscribe twice! Ok back to the video.
That moment that you realize you're on camera lol
The term "Keeping up with the Jones'es" was a catch phrase that is still in circulation today (comparison to one's neighbor and their material possessions as a benchmark for social class). Our society places so much emphasis on materialism and a lot less value on character, meaningfulness and purpose. Minimalism sets a new standard, it is a eureka moment that brings enlightenment and freedom that can only be understood by trying it out. :-)
💯
💯 people matter, not things.
@@livingthedreamandmore2939 amen! 🙏🙌🏻
One thing I don't think is accounted for in a lot of these videos, not just targeting you but most minimalism UA-camrs, is that most of them will go after shoes or other articles of clothing that are named brand... Without considering going the cheaper route, like Walmart, is actually going the consumer route... Your shoes are more likely to be quality if you pay more for them. As our most items, you just have to learn to look beyond the brand name, and instead look at the quality of the item you are purchasing.
Watching from Anchorage AK!
That plant looks like the one I knocked over while cleaning & the dirt fell out.
I'm not the most graceful at times. Lol
Hi from Indonesia!!
Great video! I have been listening to your podcast too! It's a reminder to myself to stop wasting money and time, and start to INVEST!!

Aww, no i jak tam się w Holandii mieszka?
Money wasted yes clothes, clothes, shoes and you got it clothes 🙈
We love you too!
Christmas time is hard for me because I don’t love spending on me but MY family 😅 they deserve something each year but they’re taste is expensive normally - it adddds up for sure
We love you too, Gabe, we love you too...
Do art/craft supplies count? I fill my Amazon cart with stuff I want then go back (days or even a week) later to see if I still want it. Most of it gets "deleted". However, I've spent more on art supplies in the past few years than I have in my entire life. I'm loving it. I've found my passion. My dad always said "spend your money on what counts. Don't spread yourself so thin". Thanks, Gabe.
Can you do a monthly budgeting guide video with a very nominal income like from 30 to 40 000 peryear.
I'll add it to the list!
Thankyou appreciate it
Yes 18,000 or less with a big family can be tough.
@@GabeBult Can you add to the ongoing list, more technology advice. I didn't buy myself a new phone for Christmas altho they had a sale. Will be educating myself more but would like some good shortcut advice. Thx.

I subscribed to a online class pretty much because it had a 30-day money back guarantee...guess what, I hate it, and the money back guarantee is BS!!! It is so hard to get your money back, it’s ridiculous. Lesson learned.

@7:45 "Fear of missing out"
Probably been guilty of them all at some point. I found that for big purchases it is good to sleep on it. Really helps with the problems of duress and strong arm
We love you too 😎
I literally paused at 3:47 to set an alarm for returning my stuff. xD
Awesome 👍 really I've forgotten to do that so many times
I tend to overspend or impulse buy when I’m tired.so I avoid going out then. To tired to go fish my card out to shop online lol. Supermarket I a usually not over buy if I go with a friend it becomes a quick shop nd only take the amount u need can really help not over buy th8ngs.
Hi from Brazil!
A cheap Car may cost a lot in repaircost though 🤪 i learned that leason the hard way 😂
Absolutely there's definitely a sweet spot
But I would never buy a brand new car, that is a waste of money. A better used one. 😁
I love my new car! But even tho it all worked out....I was too nice doing a favor getting their numbers up. Kinda like the " strong arm" in a nicer way now that I think about it.🤔
My car deal was $300.00 off a month by working for them & in a yr it goes down.
