I'm a huge reader, but having grown up in a very frugal family I hate getting rid of something when I feel like I haven't gotten my money's worth out of it. Right now I have a bookcase full of books that I have read once, because they are $15 books I feel like I should read them 15 times before getting rid of them. When I buy ebooks I never allow myself to pay more than $5 per book yet I have an entire bookcase of $15 books....
I don't usually regret what I buy much. Sometimes I will pick up ( 6months to a yr) a people magazine and be like " ok i remember why I don't buy this often" 😄
I hear you on the books. The same thing happened to me about a year ago even though I was already in a minimalist.. I ended up buying a bunch in anticipation of reading them soon but realized soon after that I should not have done that lol. Now I have just been reading what I can from the library or via free audiobooks and if I REALLY like the book, I might then buy it afterward for future reference. I did dogecoin for fun and for a hot minute, made a little profit but I was totally stressed out during the couple of days I had it and realized I rather stick to my regular investments, and other crypto that I believe in more LOL!!
I bought at least 20 books on decluttering and organising then I realised I would be better of trying to cut down on all my possessions not just declutter and try and aim to be a minimalist rather than organise what I have.
I regret buying lots of clothes. I can't resist those crazy sales especially during this time! But remembering to differentiate between NEEDS vs WANTS is helping me conquer that spending.
Also: my college education. If I could go back, I would have sucked it up and lived at home, went to the college in my town, then transferred to the bigger university my senior year so I could get internships. Would’ve cut my undergrad debt in half at least.
$100k in student loan debt 😅 Two bachelors and dropped out of my masters program. Still haven’t set foot in my degree fields. If I could do it over, I’d still go to college but definitely in a much smarter, financially responsible way. We shouldn’t be allowed to sign for huge money as teens 😭
I feel ya, not quite as much, $23K, but was roped into going back for a Bachelor’s in Nursing when I already was a nurse because I was told without that degree we were gonna be phased out. Yea, not so much. Now I don’t even want to be a nurse anymore 😂🤷♀️ . In my defense, I have done it for 21 years so over it!
This is because universities are now big business! The system is set up for financial failure! People don't understand what they are agreeing to. Students are pressured into going to "top notch" (aka the most expensive among the ones you are accepted into) option. I have ideas about how to change it but suffice it to say, our students are being conned into financial bondage. Good luck!
Saaaaame. I was pressured to go to college before I even knew what I wanted to do. $80,000 of debt later, I dont even want to work in the field I went to school for! If I could do it all over again, I'd go to school for programming and computer science and I sure as hell wouldn't have gone on to get a masters. You're totally right, it's ridiculous that we lend that much money out to just out of high school young adults. I did not know what I wanted in life. People think tattoos are a big life long commitment? Student loans are so much worse when it really wasn't even a choice at the time.
What’s crazy is that for my generation (elder millennial! 🙋🏽♀️) my own PARENTS didn’t even know much about what we were getting me into with the debt. They didn’t go to college themselves. So we were saddled with an expensive college education because we were told by society that it was the best way to do right by your kids.

She was told flat out that she was unhireable, except maybe for a huge pay decrease at a rehab/convalescent facility, because she only had a nursing degree with no bachelor’s. She lives in Portland/Gresham, Oregon. So I think it depends on where you live.
BOOKS. I regretted buying so many books compulsively in the past. I thought that was an investment for me, but now I just realize that: "The more books that you buy, the more time you should spend to understand it." Also, decluttering books and papers is the part that always makes me feel overwhelmed. I've already made a deal with my own self now to only buy the books that I really like and that I want to keep in my space. Buying books without actually reading them is just a kind of shortcut as we want to be a well-read person. Buying books is too easy for us, what's not easy is to really understand what's in the inside of those books.
You call them regrets/mistakes, I call them lessons. I think you made the best decision you could with the skills, knowledge and experience you had at the time. Plus the $ you had available.
With technology...libraries will phase out...information online...books to read for pleasure, buy on your tablet...so many free.. This is our new change...libraries will be a relic.

Yep, our library offers free online magazines and books, as well as reading recommendations, classes and readings for kids etc. if we want to keep reading accessible and free for those that really can't afford to pay, I believe the library is the way forward. Much as I love having films at my fingertips online I miss popping into blockbuster and a genius member of staff choosing me 5 films I love based on my previous watches, so much more varied and interesting than the algorithms...

You have clearly benefited from your past experiences (NOT MISTAKES). There are many people double your age who haven’t figured some of life’s financial lessons. You’re too hard on yourself. I wish I had your knowledge and maturity at 25. The “ mistakes” you talk about EVERYONE makes.. in their late teens and early 20’s. @@GabeBult people find that to be true with anything high end. Re: a very expensive__too large house...only 2 times you are happy...the day you get it, and the day you get rid of it!! I live in 1100 sq ft house, only thing..a huge corner lot..too much yard, but they give you a lot of land in norCalifornia 🌴😘🚙!! Also down to 5 hardback books, & 3 Bibles, 😳. Retired elementary teacher, books to read for pleasure #mystery are on my tablet.
LOVE you talking about laptops! Watching this on my 11 year old MacBook which I use 5-8 hours a day, 7 days week. Battery lasted 6 years. Last year I replaced the hard drive with a 500GB SSD and it felt like a brand new Mac :) On top of that, I ended up using it for my freelance business and it paid for itself 100x over PLUS it's given constant joy :) Everything is in one place - iTunes films, TV series, music, photos, audiobooks, PDFs etc which all stream to my Apple TV :) True quality item :)
I definitely feel you on the laptop thing, Gabe. It's so easy to say "well, I only need it for xyz and atm I only have so amount of £/$, so this'll do, but it's easy to forget that you then have to factor in the cheaper something is, the more likely you'll have to replace it sooner rather than later... I did that with several laptops over the course of about six years. My recent regret was buying my last phone on a second hand site - the touchscreen is faulty, and though I've had the screen replaced there's definitely something else there going on, so I'll be buying a new one soon at some point anyhow. Unfortunately mobiles just don't work all that well when the touchscreen is faulty any more! My father has a saying - buy cheap buy twice... think it's time i started to listen :thinking:

I had the same problem with the books, but recently I started borrowing books from the library. It saves the struggle of buying and selling and is all in all more convinient. Nice video and I especially liked the approach that throwing money at problems won´t solve them!
Books are definitely a big regret for me. At this point I just go to the library and if in the middle in the book I'm convinced I want to highlight sentences so I can read short pieces of the book over and over, I buy it
Similar to your "Online courses" topic, I regret buying tools or paying for certifications that I thought would remove obstacles to obtaining gigs. I've learned over the years that it's what you can add to a project when you show up empty-handed that demonstrates your value more than whatever you're "packing" in the toolkit.

I like you, was really into actual books, ones you can hold. I was given a kindle and was not sure if it was something I would use. However, I gave it a try and now I am hooked. It is so nice to use the audio feature and have books read to me while I am doing other things, such as cooking or sewing/crafting. I can also just read when I am in bed at night and enjoy it that way too. Plus, there are a ton of free books that you can download and enjoy. The other good thing with the free books is that if you find you don't care for a book, you did not pay to find that out. The final thing is now that all my books are on my tablet, I do not have a ton of books taking up space and/or cluttering up my home. I suggest that you give this a try, I truly believe you will be glad you did and be so happy with the switch to eBooks.
Love the comment about buying stuff ahead to save money, but then not actually finding a need for it when the future arrives. I have experienced the same thing.... counter intuitive.
Thx for keeping it real! Spent $30K on full priced timeshares when I got a job with summers off. Lost job and most of the $. Left job to go back to school (again) and lost 5 years of income plus school/living costs, never finished. Made bad real estate purchase. I don't regret splurging on a few nice furniture pieces that I admire daily and will keep for years. Life is good, and full of lessons.
The biggest thing for me was also buying cheap stuff, that just breaks within months. Every time I am just better off investing a bit more upfront but have it last. Also, making sure that I will stick with a hobby before buying everything for it. I started out camping and spent a summer with just a yoga mat to sleep on, just to make sure I wasn't going to buy a bunch of stuff and then not like camping. This season I finally got some nice gear, to stay comfy and warm. This is now a rule in the household, we don't buy anything cheap when we really want something (do research, and don't fall for name-brands either). Good video. thank you!
Believe me you're not alone on this one! Coincidentally my first car was also a Honda Civic which never had a single problem. I then had the idea to replace it with a VW diesel at a time when gas prices were high. I ran it on biodiesel thinking it would save me money and be better for the environment, but then the fuel pump blew, the electrical system messed up and the VW emissions scandal happened and I couldn't sell it....definitely the worst purchase I ever made. I should have kept that old Civic, which is probably still running somewhere! But of course hindsight is 20/20 on stuff like this, right? We all live and learn....
I regret buying books as well. I now borrow from a friend or library. I also regret buying loads of exercise equipment. It takes up space and I realize I love the outdoors and yoga. I also have a super cheap gym membership and all the equipment is there!!
My mistake: Inverst into my secound and third degree. I am a special need teacher, and I earn just the minimum wage in Hungary. Just to see how waste it was: An operator with only 8 grade in a factory earn 200% more, plus has a flat that the company pays for, once a day free meal. I learned till I was 31, which I payed for, have 3 languages to speak on and just earn like 670 dollar and renting a 1 room flat is like 400 dollar without the staff you need (like electric, water, etc)... No wonder why do we have less and less teacher in my state....
i am a gearhead since i was a child, so the only thing i choose to spend my money on instead of saving is my car and motorcycle, but sisnce i starded learning about minimalism i took a different route, instead of aiming for powerful, expensive builds, i decided i would just get whatever suits my needs and is just enough to put a smile when I'm driving. don't care how many horses it has, don't car if it's old, as long as it runs well and its fun I'm good woth it
I relate to this. I was always worried about getting a good deal. But unless you are a car dealer, the deal doesn’t really matter, the experience does. (Don’t get ripped of but just saying the price isn’t the only factor. ) Especially when the “good” deals often needed work that maybe I could do myself, but didn’t have time for. They just leads to frustration.
I regret “treating” myself to multiple very expensive target orders... since then I’ve found that every single item off those orders I’ve ended up decluttering over the last few months bc it was all impulse buys and stuff I don’t need. If that doesn’t say wasted money idk what does.

I go to the library for piles of books. We use to get about 80 with my kids. So many a category, than renew them a couple times. Books are a huge part of my life, my friends. Can't toss them when I decide to buy them.
Gabe! You're not dumb! You're not stupid! You made a few mistakes, but you're human😉 You've also learned your lesson and you're sharing the lessons to help others. I see you as intelligent and compassionate. Also, you were young when you made some of those mistakes (especially the game and investment) Many people who are much older make similar mistakes; some continue to do so! The car sounds like a fun year and if you only lost a thousand when reselling it you actually did really well! I only buy used cars and I figure a car payment is at least $200 per month. So $1k is how much you'd pay for 5 months and you got a whole year out of it. I'm impressed that you recognised that you were feeling something about your self worth and corrected that!! I've done the book thing! And shoes! OMG! It's crazy, right? I'm not a minimalist yet, but I'm working on it. As far as a gym/diet thing it's a good investment for some. Anything that improves your health (not fad diets/supplements etc but training or coaching) is an investment in self and I see that as good. Some people need support to do those things that we know are healthy. Lastly, (sorry for going on) you are STILL young and you've accomplished SO MUCH already. Clearly you're not dumb! I see all of the life changing skills you have, just work a little on the positive self talk. Peace
In Chicago we have book exchange boxes in various neighborhoods. I'm fortunate to have one at the end of my block. You can take a book or leave a book. During Covid people were also leaving non-perishable food.
My MacBook lasted 8 years. Ipad Air and iphone 7 plus are both now 5 years old, still going. Best purchases. Once in a while, go to UA-cam and turn off a few things to make them run faster.
I can't help watching these videos and realise i can always learn somerhing new from them i am mimilistic myself but have made nany mistakes in the past and have probably wasted thousands now i'm much more educated !
I spent a few hundred dollars back in 2010 playing Mafia Wars on FB so I totally get the online game one! My other big regrets are buying All Clad cookware & lots of Chanel in 2012. I sold the Chanel recently & didn’t even get half of what I paid. The All Clad is beautiful, but everything sticks to it & it is just sitting in the pantry looking pretty.
I actually prefer experiences over material objects. But I have definitely regretted buying a lot of clothes and shoes..some even still have tags on them. I have a kindle reader that I spent like weeks thinking about if I should buy it or not..because I didn’t want clutter. I ended up buying it and now it’s collecting dust :(
I usually pick experiences over stuff but it depends too which experiences. Like I don't drink because it's not something I want to spend my time or money on.
I moved into a bigger appartment last year - only to realize I felt better in my old studio, and to move back three months later. Imagine all the furniture I bought and sold within a few months under price so I could get rid of it before moving :D
I regret buying decorations. Everyday decore. Holiday decorations. I ended up with much, and then there is the task of rotating them seasonally and storing and dusting and......... Why? 2. 2 things should be enough sitting out to celebrate whatever season. Ok. Maybe 3. 😂
I'm guilty of book buying. I like to imagine that I will read a book--a-week ...but I probably average one every 2-3 weeks. Not too big of a problem - right? Wrong. I can sometimes buy 2-3 books per week. Whenever I hear a book referenced in a movie, podcast - or in another book, I immediately look to see if I can find a deal on it - generally do - then buy it - telling myself that if I don't buy it, I'll forget about it. What I'm trying to do now is - instead of buying the book I hear about, I add it to a 'suggested reading' list I keep on my computer. That kinda keeps the demons at bay.
I feel like anything I buy spur of the moment from Amazon is what I regret the most. As soon as the item(s) arrive I always say, "why did you buy this?"
I canceled my Amazon membership, now I keep things in the cart for the $25 minimum free delivery. Most times I don't need or want the item and wind up deleting it from the cart.
It's reassuring to hear somebody else makes the same mistakes as me 😂. I'm always buying things to save future me money, but like you, it never works out that way.
At the beginning of the year, I spend so much money buying clothes, on the Facebook marketplace and now I regret all of them bc it was impulsive buying and i didn't wear anything, also, i found that I really didn't like how they looked in me, and now I'm trying to sell that stuff again but cheaper :(

Right before covid hit I was well on my way towards minimalism and I had decluttered so so much. I was sort of exhausted and I felt like I "needed" new curtains. So I bought 8 pairs of thicker linen curtains in good quality and payed about €800 for them in total.. And that was with discount. I think of myself as frugal and I always have been. My interior though is the only part were I alow myself to spend more money on, since it's were I recharge. I happened to regret my purchase shortly afterwards and I missed my window for returning them. It sucks, because now I have to deside whether or not to sell them and loose money. I otherwise bought lots and lots of plants when covid hit..because I felt my home was so empty now after decluttering so much! Yeah.. Regretted that as well of course. I can't tell you how much time, work and energy that went into selling it all again... Yikes. 🙄 We all gotta learn right. Now I find myself stressing over how Not to make any further mistakes in the future when it comes to spending money. I quite like to sell (I make money from selling my antiquities that I have purchased and collected over the years..alongside of other items I have received for free from others), make and Save money. I do not however like to give my money away. So now that I am in need to purchase a new wardrobe/closet couch, mattress, table and smaller items that would make my day a little easier I stress over the fact that I do Not want to make another mistake. I find that even when buying stuff I need can be stressful. 😅
I was very particular with what was allowed in the home. And I enjoyed spending time and doing things with my kids over stuff!

Though I got rid of plastic toys and just replaced them with more fancy wooden toys then I realised I was just cluttering up the space again... Just with nicer things.... But things all the same... My kids are happier now that we've decluttered again 😊
Books (Audible, Kindle, physical books), Journals, Bibles and Bible studies. None of those things are necessarily bad, but I just have TOO MUCH !! I do re-read and re-listen to a lot of books, and I usually have at least two or three Bible studies going at one time, but most of the journals that I bought are in a big storage box. Like I said....TOO MUCH!

Books were my Achilles heal. I finally realised I can get everything at my library or through interlibrary loan. Clothes as well. I used to buy cheap clothes . I was replacing them all the time. I finally decided to buy high quality classic pieces for a capsule wardrobe. Jewelry was a big thing. Now I have decluttered most of my jewelry. I only kept a handful of classic pieces. School supplies for my kids. I look through what is in good shape.from the previous school year that I can reuse. Saved a ton of money
I used to sell computers at Best Buy and people alwaysssss wanted the cheap laptops (sub $500) I would always tell them, they will NOT last more than 2 years and that’s pushing it. 9 times out of 10 that’s what people would buy. Then they would return it or be back in 6 months to get a better laptop 🤦🏾♀️
I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 that's like 6 years old and it's still going strong. When buying a laptop make sure it has at least 8GB of ram, a solid state drive, and has an option to limit the maximum charge capacity, as it will dramatically extend the life of the battery.
Yep. Forgot my sneakers at work last night, but I was too cheap to go get another pair of sneakers bc I had forgotten them again last week and brought a pair. Mopping in heels! Ouch.
My Mistakes. . . . .Clothes and clothes for rare use occasions. EX A long sleeve shirt that is supposed to be cooling and block the sun. Me - Oh I'll use this when I go fishing. Reality - Tank Top/Bathing Suit and sun block and I bring the shirt and forgot it at the cabin never even wearing it. Lots of clothes with the idea I would get use out of them but I only wear things I really like and just purchase more of what I really like to wear. Specialty items rarely get used or worn. I buy things I need in the moment w/o research and shopping around and find the item I was truly looking for. EX bought cheap sweat pants and hoodie and then found a truly better sweat pant and hoodie at a different store that was 5X the quality and what I really wanted and I had stopped even wearing the first set because I disliked it so much. It was a "band aid" purchase as I needed the time to shop around and do research to find what I really wanted that would last. I have to make a list of items I believe i need or want and then research the items to find what I need/want exactly at which store and the best price and read reviews as well. It helps me also prioritize how important is THIS potential purchase to me if I am currently living without it and where/how does it fit into my life. I also use behavior modification on myself so I am not allowing myself to purchase any clothing items until I have finished a full closet make over. I mean pulling the shelving out, putty all holes, painting, putting in new storage/organizer and going through each article of clothing I have. . . . then I can maybe buy myself something off my list but I expect to go "I forgot about this" a few times in this process as well. My other mistakes - Buying crap my kids say they want and within 2 min after purchase they no longer care about it at all and I should have lit the money on fire. I really had to stop listening to them and much of their opinions on things and buy NEEDS only and say "this is your want $ for this month, when it's gone it's gone so plan wisely" and let them start learning to deal with the consequences. (age appropriate) Teaching them impulse control and to not act one every impulse and urge surf (emotion regulation term) is a HUGE DEAL. The idea of if you still want it tomorrow or at the end of the week then we can discuss it instead of the instant gratification.
Clothes and books were a weakness for a long time. Oh craft items and hobby stuff...big time. I also bought courses that I didn't benefit from directly...BUT I learnt what I enjoyed and what my goals were from these mistakes...Still slap my own forehead about it 😆 🤣
So far I don't regret anything I have gotten rid of in the name of Minimalism. It's hard for me to find shoes that are comfortable, so some of the shoes I have purchased could be classified as regrettable purchases.
I 100% regret going to college. Or i at least regret listening to my mom and not going after my "silly" dreams therefore going to college (more than once) for things I didn't love doing. Now I'm 30 with a child and 50k in student loan debt that I'll never be able to pay off and never be able to get a loan for a house or a decent car. My student loans have literally saddled me with having to keep buying really crappy cars that will only get me from point A to Point B for a year or 2 before it breaks down to the point that it's cheaper to buy another clunker than to get it fixed. You are so lucky you didn't go to college, it's truly the blessing that parents/grandparents rarely ever tell you about.
Buying real estate (an apartment) was huge mistake for me. I had this cavalier attitude that property is a good investment and bought in my home town during a property boom that was tied to the oil industry. When that crashed so did my house and I've been in negative equity, renting it out at a loss for the past 5 years.
Most people think books have a magical glow like ooooh the printed word this must be important it will make me better. No lots of books are just crap bandwagon money making thingy stuff. I have a slightly older car but a nice one and I look after it. I see it as automotive art and my hobby, detailing and basic mechanics etc. I do not see it as an extension of me or an ego thing. I am like did I design it no, could I build it….no. Is worth a ton of money…… no. Sooooo enjoy and simply appreciate it.

$100k in student loan debt 😅 Two bachelors and dropped out of my masters program. Still haven’t set foot in my degree fields. If I could do it over, I’d still go to college but definitely in a much smarter, financially responsible way. We shouldn’t be allowed to sign for huge money as teens 😭
I feel ya, not quite as much, $23K, but was roped into going back for a Bachelor’s in Nursing when I already was a nurse because I was told without that degree we were gonna be phased out. Yea, not so much. Now I don’t even want to be a nurse anymore 😂🤷♀️ . In my defense, I have done it for 21 years so over it!
This is because universities are now big business! The system is set up for financial failure! People don't understand what they are agreeing to. Students are pressured into going to "top notch" (aka the most expensive among the ones you are accepted into) option. I have ideas about how to change it but suffice it to say, our students are being conned into financial bondage. Good luck!
Saaaaame. I was pressured to go to college before I even knew what I wanted to do. $80,000 of debt later, I dont even want to work in the field I went to school for! If I could do it all over again, I'd go to school for programming and computer science and I sure as hell wouldn't have gone on to get a masters. You're totally right, it's ridiculous that we lend that much money out to just out of high school young adults. I did not know what I wanted in life. People think tattoos are a big life long commitment? Student loans are so much worse when it really wasn't even a choice at the time.
What’s crazy is that for my generation (elder millennial! 🙋🏽♀️) my own PARENTS didn’t even know much about what we were getting me into with the debt. They didn’t go to college themselves. So we were saddled with an expensive college education because we were told by society that it was the best way to do right by your kids.

She was told flat out that she was unhireable, except maybe for a huge pay decrease at a rehab/convalescent facility, because she only had a nursing degree with no bachelor’s. She lives in Portland/Gresham, Oregon. So I think it depends on where you live.

BOOKS. I regretted buying so many books compulsively in the past. I thought that was an investment for me, but now I just realize that: "The more books that you buy, the more time you should spend to understand it." Also, decluttering books and papers is the part that always makes me feel overwhelmed. I've already made a deal with my own self now to only buy the books that I really like and that I want to keep in my space. Buying books without actually reading them is just a kind of shortcut as we want to be a well-read person. Buying books is too easy for us, what's not easy is to really understand what's in the inside of those books.

Yep, our library offers free online magazines and books, as well as reading recommendations, classes and readings for kids etc. if we want to keep reading accessible and free for those that really can't afford to pay, I believe the library is the way forward. Much as I love having films at my fingertips online I miss popping into blockbuster and a genius member of staff choosing me 5 films I love based on my previous watches, so much more varied and interesting than the algorithms...

I live in 1100 sq ft house, only thing..a huge corner lot..too much yard, but they give you a lot of land in norCalifornia 🌴😘🚙!! Also down to 5 hardback books, & 3 Bibles, 😳. Retired elementary teacher, books to read for pleasure #mystery are on my tablet.
LOVE you talking about laptops! Watching this on my 11 year old MacBook which I use 5-8 hours a day, 7 days week. Battery lasted 6 years. Last year I replaced the hard drive with a 500GB SSD and it felt like a brand new Mac :) On top of that, I ended up using it for my freelance business and it paid for itself 100x over PLUS it's given constant joy :) Everything is in one place - iTunes films, TV series, music, photos, audiobooks, PDFs etc which all stream to my Apple TV :) True quality item :)

I definitely feel you on the laptop thing, Gabe. It's so easy to say "well, I only need it for xyz and atm I only have so amount of £/$, so this'll do, but it's easy to forget that you then have to factor in the cheaper something is, the more likely you'll have to replace it sooner rather than later... I did that with several laptops over the course of about six years.
My recent regret was buying my last phone on a second hand site - the touchscreen is faulty, and though I've had the screen replaced there's definitely something else there going on, so I'll be buying a new one soon at some point anyhow. Unfortunately mobiles just don't work all that well when the touchscreen is faulty any more!

the public library seems a fairly obvious choice instead of buying books and reselling them...
this is what drew me to e-books. never have to set foot in a library, or deal with returning. plus, e-readers feel surprisingly natural to read on.

I had the same problem with the books, but recently I started borrowing books from the library. It saves the struggle of buying and selling and is all in all more convinient.

Books are definitely a big regret for me. At this point I just go to the library and if in the middle in the book I'm convinced I want to highlight sentences so I can read short pieces of the book over and over, I buy it
Similar to your "Online courses" topic, I regret buying tools or paying for certifications that I thought would remove obstacles to obtaining gigs. I've learned over the years that it's what you can add to a project when you show up empty-handed that demonstrates your value more than whatever you're "packing" in the toolkit.

I like you, was really into actual books, ones you can hold. I was given a kindle and was not sure if it was something I would use. However, I gave it a try and now I am hooked. It is so nice to use the audio feature and have books read to me while I am doing other things, such as cooking or sewing/crafting. I can also just read when I am in bed at night and enjoy it that way too. Plus, there are a ton of free books that you can download and enjoy. The other good thing with the free books is that if you find you don't care for a book, you did not pay to find that out. The final thing is now that all my books are on my tablet, I do not have a ton of books taking up space and/or cluttering up my home. I suggest that you give this a try, I truly believe you will be glad you did and be so happy with the switch to eBooks.

Thx for keeping it real! Spent $30K on full priced timeshares when I got a job with summers off. Lost job and most of the $. Left job to go back to school (again) and lost 5 years of income plus school/living costs, never finished. Made bad real estate purchase. I don't regret splurging on a few nice furniture pieces that I admire daily and will keep for years. Life is good, and full of lessons.

The biggest thing for me was also buying cheap stuff, that just breaks within months. Every time I am just better off investing a bit more upfront but have it last. Also, making sure that I will stick with a hobby before buying everything for it. I started out camping and spent a summer with just a yoga mat to sleep on, just to make sure I wasn't going to buy a bunch of stuff and then not like camping. This season I finally got some nice gear, to stay comfy and warm. This is now a rule in the household, we don't buy anything cheap when we really want something (do research, and don't fall for name-brands either). Good video. thank you!
Believe me you're not alone on this one! Coincidentally my first car was also a Honda Civic which never had a single problem. I then had the idea to replace it with a VW diesel at a time when gas prices were high. I ran it on biodiesel thinking it would save me money and be better for the environment, but then the fuel pump blew, the electrical system messed up and the VW emissions scandal happened and I couldn't sell it....definitely the worst purchase I ever made. I should have kept that old Civic, which is probably still running somewhere! But of course hindsight is 20/20 on stuff like this, right? We all live and learn....
I regret buying books as well. I now borrow from a friend or library. I also regret buying loads of exercise equipment. It takes up space and I realize I love the outdoors and yoga. I also have a super cheap gym membership and all the equipment is there!!

My mistake: Inverst into my secound and third degree. I am a special need teacher, and I earn just the minimum wage in Hungary. Just to see how waste it was: An operator with only 8 grade in a factory earn 200% more, plus has a flat that the company pays for, once a day free meal. I learned till I was 31, which I payed for, have 3 languages to speak on and just earn like 670 dollar and renting a 1 room flat is like 400 dollar without the staff you need (like electric, water, etc)... No wonder why do we have less and less teacher in my state....
i am a gearhead since i was a child, so the only thing i choose to spend my money on instead of saving is my car and motorcycle, but sisnce i starded learning about minimalism i took a different route, instead of aiming for powerful, expensive builds, i decided i would just get whatever suits my needs and is just enough to put a smile when I'm driving. don't care how many horses it has, don't car if it's old, as long as it runs well and its fun I'm good woth it
I relate to this. I was always worried about getting a good deal. But unless you are a car dealer, the deal doesn’t really matter, the experience does. (Don’t get ripped of but just saying the price isn’t the only factor. )
Especially when the “good” deals often needed work that maybe I could do myself, but didn’t have time for. They just leads to frustration.
I regret “treating” myself to multiple very expensive target orders... since then I’ve found that every single item off those orders I’ve ended up decluttering over the last few months bc it was all impulse buys and stuff I don’t need. If that doesn’t say wasted money idk what does.

I go to the library for piles of books. We use to get about 80 with my kids. So many a category, than renew them a couple times. Books are a huge part of my life, my friends. Can't toss them when I decide to buy them.
Gabe! You're not dumb! You're not stupid! You made a few mistakes, but you're human😉 You've also learned your lesson and you're sharing the lessons to help others. I see you as intelligent and compassionate. Also, you were young when you made some of those mistakes (especially the game and investment) Many people who are much older make similar mistakes; some continue to do so! The car sounds like a fun year and if you only lost a thousand when reselling it you actually did really well! I only buy used cars and I figure a car payment is at least $200 per month. So $1k is how much you'd pay for 5 months and you got a whole year out of it. I'm impressed that you recognised that you were feeling something about your self worth and corrected that!! I've done the book thing! And shoes! OMG! It's crazy, right? I'm not a minimalist yet, but I'm working on it. As far as a gym/diet thing it's a good investment for some. Anything that improves your health (not fad diets/supplements etc but training or coaching) is an investment in self and I see that as good. Some people need support to do those things that we know are healthy. Lastly, (sorry for going on) you are STILL young and you've accomplished SO MUCH already. Clearly you're not dumb! I see all of the life changing skills you have, just work a little on the positive self talk. Peace

In Chicago we have book exchange boxes in various neighborhoods. I'm fortunate to have one at the end of my block. You can take a book or leave a book. During Covid people were also leaving non-perishable food.

My MacBook lasted 8 years. Ipad Air and iphone 7 plus are both now 5 years old, still going. Best purchases. Once in a while, go to UA-cam and turn off a few things to make them run faster.

I spent a few hundred dollars back in 2010 playing Mafia Wars on FB so I totally get the online game one! My other big regrets are buying All Clad cookware & lots of Chanel in 2012. I sold the Chanel recently & didn’t even get half of what I paid. The All Clad is beautiful, but everything sticks to it & it is just sitting in the pantry looking pretty.

I actually prefer experiences over material objects. But I have definitely regretted buying a lot of clothes and shoes..some even still have tags on them. I have a kindle reader that I spent like weeks thinking about if I should buy it or not..because I didn’t want clutter. I ended up buying it and now it’s collecting dust :(
I usually pick experiences over stuff but it depends too which experiences. Like I don't drink because it's not something I want to spend my time or money on.

I'm guilty of book buying. I like to imagine that I will read a book--a-week ...but I probably average one every 2-3 weeks. Not too big of a problem - right? Wrong. I can sometimes buy 2-3 books per week. Whenever I hear a book referenced in a movie, podcast - or in another book, I immediately look to see if I can find a deal on it - generally do - then buy it - telling myself that if I don't buy it, I'll forget about it. What I'm trying to do now is - instead of buying the book I hear about, I add it to a 'suggested reading' list I keep on my computer. That kinda keeps the demons at bay.

Right before covid hit I was well on my way towards minimalism and I had decluttered so so much. I was sort of exhausted and I felt like I "needed" new curtains. So I bought 8 pairs of thicker linen curtains in good quality and payed about €800 for them in total.. And that was with discount. I think of myself as frugal and I always have been. My interior though is the only part were I alow myself to spend more money on, since it's were I recharge. I happened to regret my purchase shortly afterwards and I missed my window for returning them. It sucks, because now I have to deside whether or not to sell them and loose money. I otherwise bought lots and lots of plants when covid hit..because I felt my home was so empty now after decluttering so much! Yeah.. Regretted that as well of course. I can't tell you how much time, work and energy that went into selling it all again... Yikes. 🙄 We all gotta learn right. Now I find myself stressing over how Not to make any further mistakes in the future when it comes to spending money. I quite like to sell (I make money from selling my antiquities that I have purchased and collected over the years..alongside of other items I have received for free from others), make and Save money. I do not however like to give my money away. So now that I am in need to purchase a new wardrobe/closet couch, mattress, table and smaller items that would make my day a little easier I stress over the fact that I do Not want to make another mistake. I find that even when buying stuff I need can be stressful. 😅

Though I got rid of plastic toys and just replaced them with more fancy wooden toys then I realised I was just cluttering up the space again... Just with nicer things.... But things all the same... Books (Audible, Kindle, physical books), Journals, Bibles and Bible studies. None of those things are necessarily bad, but I just have TOO MUCH !! I do re-read and re-listen to a lot of books, and I usually have at least two or three Bible studies going at one time, but most of the journals that I bought are in a big storage box. Like I said....TOO MUCH!
Vessi sneakers are pretty good Gabe, and they are waterproof. They have worked well as my go to everyday sneaker for last 7 months.
They fell apart on me after 6 months. ;( I really liked them though. Nice for autumn.

Books were my Achilles heal. I finally realised I can get everything at my library or through interlibrary loan. Clothes as well. I used to buy cheap clothes . I was replacing them all the time. I finally decided to buy high quality classic pieces for a capsule wardrobe. Jewelry was a big thing. Now I have decluttered most of my jewelry. I only kept a handful of classic pieces. School supplies for my kids. I look through what is in good shape.from the previous school year that I can reuse. Saved a ton of money
I used to sell computers at Best Buy and people alwaysssss wanted the cheap laptops (sub $500) I would always tell them, they will NOT last more than 2 years and that’s pushing it. 9 times out of 10 that’s what people would buy. Then they would return it or be back in 6 months to get a better laptop 🤦🏾♀️

I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 that's like 6 years old and it's still going strong. When buying a laptop make sure it has at least 8GB of ram, a solid state drive, and has an option to limit the maximum charge capacity, as it will dramatically extend the life of the battery.

My Mistakes. . . . .Clothes and clothes for rare use occasions. EX A long sleeve shirt that is supposed to be cooling and block the sun. Me - Oh I'll use this when I go fishing. Reality - Tank Top/Bathing Suit and sun block and I bring the shirt and forgot it at the cabin never even wearing it. Lots of clothes with the idea I would get use out of them but I only wear things I really like and just purchase more of what I really like to wear. Specialty items rarely get used or worn. I buy things I need in the moment w/o research and shopping around and find the item I was truly looking for. EX bought cheap sweat pants and hoodie and then found a truly better sweat pant and hoodie at a different store that was 5X the quality and what I really wanted and I had stopped even wearing the first set because I disliked it so much. It was a "band aid" purchase as I needed the time to shop around and do research to find what I really wanted that would last. I have to make a list of items I believe i need or want and then research the items to find what I need/want exactly at which store and the best price and read reviews as well. It helps me also prioritize how important is THIS potential purchase to me if I am currently living without it and where/how does it fit into my life. I also use behavior modification on myself so I am not allowing myself to purchase any clothing items until I have finished a full closet make over. I mean pulling the shelving out, putty all holes, painting, putting in new storage/organizer and going through each article of clothing I have. . . . then I can maybe buy myself something off my list but I expect to go "I forgot about this" a few times in this process as well.
My other mistakes - Buying crap my kids say they want and within 2 min after purchase they no longer care about it at all and I should have lit the money on fire. I really had to stop listening to them and much of their opinions on things and buy NEEDS only and say "this is your want $ for this month, when it's gone it's gone so plan wisely" and let them start learning to deal with the consequences. (age appropriate) Teaching them impulse control and to not act one every impulse and urge surf (emotion regulation term) is a HUGE DEAL. The idea of if you still want it tomorrow or at the end of the week then we can discuss it instead of the instant gratification.

So far I don't regret anything I have gotten rid of in the name of Minimalism. It's hard for me to find shoes that are comfortable, so some of the shoes I have purchased could be classified as regrettable purchases.
I 100% regret going to college. Or i at least regret listening to my mom and not going after my "silly" dreams therefore going to college (more than once) for things I didn't love doing. Now I'm 30 with a child and 50k in student loan debt that I'll never be able to pay off and never be able to get a loan for a house or a decent car. My student loans have literally saddled me with having to keep buying really crappy cars that will only get me from point A to Point B for a year or 2 before it breaks down to the point that it's cheaper to buy another clunker than to get it fixed. You are so lucky you didn't go to college, it's truly the blessing that parents/grandparents rarely ever tell you about.
I think most of us make bad buying decisons at times.
Buying real estate (an apartment) was huge mistake for me. I had this cavalier attitude that property is a good investment and bought in my home town during a property boom that was tied to the oil industry. When that crashed so did my house and I've been in negative equity, renting it out at a loss for the past 5 years.
Library-for physical books, dvds, cds + Hoopla, Kanopy, Flipster for digital content.

Most people think books have a magical glow like ooooh the printed word this must be important it will make me better. No lots of books are just crap bandwagon money making thingy stuff. I have a slightly older car but a nice one and I look after it. I see it as automotive art and my hobby, detailing and basic mechanics etc. I do not see it as an extension of me or an ego thing. I am like did I design it no, could I build it….no. Is worth a ton of money…… no. Sooooo enjoy and simply appreciate it.
