@@Cheeseluver1 I found the answer about a month ago, but I appreciate the reply. The dirty side (the part facing downward) is considered the outside and the clean side (part facing up) is the inside. I ended up taking the K&N filter out because it slow dripped oil into the housing after a couple weeks despite being conservative with the oil. I’d rather change normal filter’s 3x as often than deal with the hassle that comes with the K&N ever again.
I have seen a few tests done comparing K&N oiled foam to paper elements filters. The K&Ns do flow more air, but they also pass a lot more dirt. For applications where the filter is unlikely to get wet, I stick with paper elements. They are maintenance free, last a long time and filter far better than oiled foam. However, you are are running a machine that may get submerged or ingest a lot of water into the air box, then oiled foam is hard to beat.
Jeffrey Hinman I decided to buy the k&n filter cleaning kit like you recommended but it doesn’t have a whole lot of washing instructions like if I just use warm water or warm soapy water. Oh well I got awhile before I need to clean it anyway cause I just bought one yesterday
You don't have to buy two or rush, just do it on your day off from work on a weekend and get a 12pack of your favorite adult beverage and take your time enjoy your day and clean your filter.
I just bought my first k&n filter for my escape eco boost and gotta say she halls ass now more then before and the filter mine takes is bigger then any filter you had on your counter. I probably won’t need to wash my filter till the end of the year. I’m jumping the gun on the cleaning so I know how to do it before the time comes
Thanks for this video, @Partzilla. I've heard of people installing the rectangular filters WITHOUT the slotted cardboard bottom layer (snow cover?) and experience superior performance. Would you know anything about this? Thanks for your consideration.
i bought one yesterday. Taking it back. Put it to the light. They have big holes in them that the oil is meant to keep out. Sorry but i dont believe it
Para un filtro de arena, puede sacarlo y lavarlo a mano, secarlo y reemplazarlo. Un filtro de espuma requiere una solución diferente, tenemos un video para eso.
K&N do say only spray oil on outside of the filter. (the side dirt collects). It can play havoc on MAF (mass air flow) sensor if you oil the inside nearest the engine.
So following this guide your filter gets mildly clean and then soked to hell with oil to cake up your MAF the first time you drive your vehicle... wtf.
dont oil the inside , only the outside , let the oil 'wick' to the inside so you dont hurt your mass air sensor .
Which side is the “inside” on a flat one? The side that gets dirty, or the side that stays clean? Nobody seems to ever specify.
@@user-fi6ve4tx9t I believe when you pull out your filter, the inwards part that faces the car's interior, is the inside.

@@user-fi6ve4tx9t you're welcome lol I just cleaned my air filter all by myself last night lol I winged it lol
I oil it both sides, but let it sit for days even weeks before use.
Easy fix. Buy two filters so you can use one while the other is drying.

Well yeah, you either filter which is a flow restriction or you open up flow and lose out on filtration.
@@Thoroughly_Wet Most don’t understand that and think a K&N can magically improve both.
They make a cleaner and oil for their filters. It’s $15 bucks for the kit. You can clean the filter numerous times with it.

Jay W cmon man it’s self explanatory lol 😂
@@goldenhorshoe4814 The directions are pretty clear. You spray the cleaner spray, let it sit, then rinse. It’s all there in black and white.
Great video thank you. Just purchased K&N filters and will definitely pick up your cleaner and oil
Purchased 2 so never a Rush joB, Fresh one at Hand ". .

Cant get no better than this
How many times can you clean it? Until you should replace it???
Say WARTER one more time!! 🤣🤣
When those reusable filters are first used, do they need to be oiled too?
No, they're prelubed by the factory
You are very good master 👍

Be very careful putting k&n on anything with a turbo. I run a diesel and they are notorious for dusting the turbos until they're shot.
after you spray the oil on does it need to sit and dry also?
It will absorb quick. You should be fine to reinstall
@@PartzillaParts TY
I use a degreaser to clean it and WD-40 to oil it.

Found this really helpful 👍
How often should u clean it? mileage and time? actually I rarely drive it so I am more concerned about period of time.
Every Oil Change would be ideal to keep it in the best shape and vehicle maintenance.
Generally every 12k or 16k depending on the manufacturer. I personally do it every other oil change, but I have a lot of time in the seat with the K&N
Great video , thanks.
its just degreaser and use water low pressure hose from inside out first before outside
Could I just soak it in water and not use any oils?
polinidream45 thanks bud
Hey John, after the oil is applied to the filter, do you have to wait or can it be reinstalled on the motorcycle and operated right away?
Orwinej let it rest a bit.
Overnight should be enough.
Just let it soak in. You don't have to wait very long.
I’m certainly not disagreeing but I once oiled mine, reassembled and fouled out all of the plugs. Maybe I oiled too much?
Dawn dish soap works great dont need any oil going in to your maf sensor
It would be great if you could do a video on how to replace and set throttle position sensor on a Honda foreman 500. Thank you.
I love your videos.
i bought one yesterday. Taking it back. Put it to the light. They have big holes in them that the oil is meant to keep out. Sorry but i dont believe it
It should be noted that some K&N filters are oil-less and are only designed to be cleaned and put back dry.
What's the difference between 99-5000 and 99-5000eu
Cuando el filtro tiene funda para cubrir el filtro también se limpia igual???

the water turned pink...guess that cleaned the red dye on the filter...

Rule number one don’t ever spray inside unless u love mass air flow sensor problems
I don't believe in K&N filters for ATV. I use foam only.
@@wyattmac9701 Foam without oil can't stop dust...

PIA. I'll stick with disposable paper filters.
To answer all these stupid comments and questions, JUST BUY A NEW FILTER!! DAMN! STOP BEING CHEAP
These are reusable filters. They're meant to be cleaned and reused.
