  • We have all trusted K&N filters for years on our trucks. Well, why wouldn't you want to install and try out this K&N Air filter on your house. Today, I am testing out the K&N HVAC FILTER. The filter in the video is a 20 X 20 X 1 and the model number is HVC-12020. This filter has a MERV 11 rating. It claims to filter out Allergies, Pollen, Smoke, Dust, Pet Dander, Mold, Smog, and More.
    K&N Filter: amzn.to/4a4pfsd
I look forward to not throwing money away on replacing regular filters every three months. Cleaning this K&N will be a lot cheaper!

"Here's the manual. You don't really need it for a whole house filter. Here are some screws. Not sure what they're for." 🤣

It has a down arrow on it, that means point to the fan motor and mine is wire side on bottom. It appears I have to wash this once a month or the furnace gives flashing lights, after I clean it and reinstall, it's fine. I expected every few months, not every month. Also, I tape the middle of the slot to get rid of gaps as I've seen in other videos.

This is a terrible test for an air filter. A box fan is an axial fan type and is designed for high speed, zero restriction settings. They have high flow rate but terrible static pressure and are usually three or five blade design. For the uninitiated, static pressure is the force of air which is required to move air through a duct, pipe, radiator, or a filter. Static pressure is measured by having the air output of a fan push into a reducing tube which is connected to a vertical column that's filled with water. Static pressure is the measurement of how many mm or inches the water level is pushed up the tube by the air pressure.
Furnaces ALWAYS use a 'blower' type fan. They're also called squirrel cage, centrifugal, etc. These fans have dozens of small blades which adds up to a lot more surface area pushing on the air than an axial fan. Because of this these blowers run at typically a lower RPM and thus have less air speed, but they have much more force behind the air, allowing it to easily move through filters, radiators, and through long ducts.

I bought a KN filter.. my AC BLOWER was SO LOUD you could tell there was so much restriction... I called KN for a refund.. they said I would have to pay to ship the filter back. I just threw it away. it wasn't worth the hassle.

Been using Filtrete 2800 20x30 MERV14 for years. Having a lot of pets, living in a dusty area (Santa Clarita,CA), and running the blower fan 24/7 to control allergies I have to replace them every month or when I notice the restriction increase. At $75 for 2 filters on Amazon pre tax that’s $450 a year! I’m looking forward to saving money with this but am I little worried about the lower MERV of 11. Hopefully we won’t notice since we also have air purifiers too. Time will tell. How are you liking yours?

I have had no issues with anything, I have cleaned it once and about to have to clean it again soon. It’s a breeze to clean, but in your situation I would consider buying two. That way when it time to clean one, you can swap between the two, each cleaning. Or you can do what I do and just hang on to a regular filter and place it in while you wait on the k&n filter to dry.

I bought 4 of these and they are noisy when the y AC / Heat comes on.

If you want to measure air flow restriction, you need to install the G99 Air Filter Gage from General Aire. I have it and it shows how restrictive one of those reusable furnace filter where the frame is reuse and you just replace the pleated filter part. If I didn't have the air filter gage, (yes it spell gage and not gauge), I would have run it and the air flow restriction would have damage my hvac blower unit.

I bought one and it completely stopped my air flow. For the life of me, couldn't figure it out. The K&N is way too restricted in my system.

this was not a very good test for the air filters, yes you tested air flow, but the ability to filter is more important. i have used the kn filter for several months now and have not seen a difference in performance from a paper filter. cleaning the filter takes a while, plus i can never get it 100% clean, i have cooking grease and pet hair, paper filters are easier to just replace vs spending 30 mins cleaning and then waiting for it to dry. (unless you buy 2 kn filters) for the sake of time and energy, im going back to paper filters.

Thanks for checking out the video. I was planning to do an update video on the filtration and compare it to the used 3 month filter I have been holding onto. Also plan to show how to clean it.

I agree. I was really upset that K&N talk all this savings. I did not know they expect you to buy their $20-some cleaner on top of the $50-some filter. I live in a dry, hot climate and even here it takes quite a while to dry the filter. I WANT the filter's promise to be true, but "lifetime" is just false. For a 3-pack of for-sure clean filters, you can buy the one you have to clean and wait for it to dry, and that's if you DON'T buy their special cleaner.

@@colephelps6202 K&N is living off their name. Now it is cheap manufactured made in China junk that still bank on people falling for their gimmick. Notice how they never show any proof to their claims even with their car engine filters.

To prevent it from rusting, I thought you sprayed after maintenace After spraying, letting it sit and washing and drying, don't you put a light spray on it? I really don't know. Do you end the washing/drying with a light spray?

  • @Mr-SRG

Mine was junk, waste of money. It's measurements are not accurate so the filter slams into the intake every time my AC unit turns on. I excitedly took it down after 3 months of summer AC running and it didn't capture anything. A cheap Merv 8 filter captures more.

I bought 2 of them. What a mistake. It slowed down pressure and makes your HVAC work harder, witch will make your a/c lifetime to suffer. Installed a MERV 4 on the HVAC and a MERV 1 on the door and what a difference. Can feel the air for the first time in years. And to clean the K&N you really need to get a power sprayer or the car wash if you really want it clean cuz the house hose won't do it.

Interesting, thanks for the comment. I have cleaned mine 3 times now, and never had any issues. I think it really depends on your system, possibly the age, an how many returns you have. I love using them and have already saved a lot by not having to purchase new ones.

These are terrible. They increase static pressure so much that it kills your air flow terribly.

    I tried K & N filter. NO GOOD !! = (luckily I checked 2 days after installing it > IN THE ATTIC - Yikes !).
Puddle on my secondary (emergency) pan right below the Air Handler. Maybe it restricted inflow of air... really don't know. I switched back to OEM (Hog Hair) Filter KFAFK0312, 317659-403 and leak stopped. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND K & N "reusable" filter. RETURNED/REFUNDED from Jeff Bezos.
