The American navy had leased 2 Swedish submarines of so called Gotland class. The Swedish marine took an older so called "Sterling engine" and like modified it and basicially made it impossible to detect by radar/sonar. The reason America wanted to leas them was to exercise in shallow waters. Maybe hard to believe but the Swedish weapons are among the most advanced in the world.
not that hard to believe actually since sweden ranks on top of almost everything :P
They only leased one; just the Gotland for 2 years.
@@Errr717 Ok my bad thanks for correcting me :)
@@Errr717They leased the HMS Uppland, not the HMS Gotland if I’m not mistaken.
I read a comment from someone claiming that during the game the Gotland sub had taken images of the Ronald Reagan captain having breakfast and sent these to them during the games. It supposedly had made them furious.
The Gotland-class diesel submarines are a defensive sub best for ambush strikes where there's no need to stay under water that long, it can hide behind islands to surface between attacks. And the Stockholm archipelago alone has 6000+ islands, and the Baltic sea being shallow relatively speaking it can move where most subs and ships can't. The combination of islands, shallow watern and the submarines remarkable agility makes it very hard to outsmart and hit with torpedoes. A lot of ways to protect itself from incoming torpedoes.
The Baltic ocean has an average depth of just 55 meters. It's very shallow. This is one of the main reasons for why the Gotland subs all have 48 externally mounted naval mines. It's extremely easy to deploy them in shallow waters.
In 2000, the HSwMs Halland (Gotlands' sister sub) took part in NATO exercises in the Med. In three mock engagements she defeated a Spanish Navy anti-submarine group, a French nuclear attack sub and the USS Houston ( a Los Angeles class nuclear attack sub).
Think that was the reason USN contacted Swedish Navy. Think they stopped outside Ireland on the way back and did it again.
Sweden is very high tech even with its small army. They produce very state of the art equipment some that even America use. They are a friendly ally with the Americans and the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, Germany, France and their allies. They are not the biggest army but they are still not one you want to mess with. They know what they are doing and they got the equipment to back it up. Of course they would not survive alone against a big nation such as Russia for example. Their goal is mainly to survive the fight long enough for allies to come and help. They are starting to buff up their army, navy and air force big time though and for the next 5-10 years I believe their military capabilities will increase many times over.

We are a small country, we focus mainly on peacekeeping and dipolomacy. This also meens we are most of the time underestimated when it comes to actual fighting capabilities. Back in the 90ies, we toke part in the peace keeping UN opertation. The Serbians nicknamed the troops ”the blond furies”. This nickname came mostly from our Female soldiers.
Yes if you live next to a former superpower that you even attacked historically then you need to have good defenses :) Yes I am born and raised in Stockholm and have even been in the Swedish military but not the navy but the army.
We actually have very good relationships all three of us, Sweden, New Zealand and USA. Here is another video that I would like to see your reaction of. This is also on a naval theme, where USA got a little Swedish contribution. This is about a Swede who came to the US and constructed a ship which eventually helped the north states to win the civil war.
John Ericsson was not so succesful in the beginning, neither in Sweden nor in Great Britain, and not in USA in the beginning neither. But his construktion of a certain war-ship turned him to an American national hero!

Captain of the REAGAN to the supporting anti-submarine warfare assets: "You're all f@#ing fired!"
Hi. I live in Sweden and I know they have been working updating 22 new systems and the engine on the sub. Here is some what have been released. "The upgrade process includes many important systems, such as Stirling AIP, sonar, sensors and management and communication systems. The submarines in the Gotland class are the first conventional submarines in the world to be equipped with a single optonic mast that replaces the traditional periscope. On-board security that prevents data intrusion is another important addition that makes Saab a world leader in IT security for submarines".
I would teach Sweden how to build better subs in my backyard.
@Van Aser Which one?
We really should plug in an Vodka sensor, then the Russ would be detected without any other sensor activated, and earlier.😅

As an ex submariner I can confirm... this is the fun shit. :-P
Swedish Tech is awesome 👍🇸🇪
This video was amazing Courtney. I really love tuning in to your reaction videos as always. PS: Stay Safe.
That's one of the points of war games, to have your "opponents" find flaws in your defenses. Also to learn to work together. Sweden seems to lean towards finesse, the U.S. seems to lean toward massive force.
It was a simulator event.. Although Electric/diesel are very silent if on electric... We lost a few in WW2, from Bombers and ship to ship fights.
Sweden: "Hold my beer"
Australia did the same thing with their sub but they were much cooler because they decided to announce their victory by blasting Men At Work's hit song "Down Under" so the Americans could hear it on their passive sonar.
And to add to the accolades of this Swedish sub, in 2000 it took part in two different large-scale exercises. One in the Mediterranean where she remained completely undetected for the whole duration while recording her "friendly adversaries", and during a NATO exercise in the Atlantic where she won a mock duel with Spanish naval units, a French SSN nuclear-powered submarine, and the American SSN submarine USS Houston.
Hi from Sweden, and yes, if we would, we could :-) But this was a training thing, but they could not find the Swedish sub. For several times :-) USA hired the sub and crew for 2 years, still could not find it. Damn we Swedes are good :-)
Yes, our tech is the most advanced after the US
No different than when Russia snuck a sub through your territorial waters and you couldn't see it either. 😅
@Shinei of course they do, they're telling you stories. Doesn't change the fact the Russians snuck a sub through your waters and you spent weeks looking for it.
Well we Americans are good too. We developed the passive sonar system in San Diego no less by Signal Processing Systems.
the fun thing is, that there was a swedish liason on the carrier, and they asked him..where is the submarine, little did they know, that he pointed on the map exactly where the sub was...they thought he meant the general area, he even did this twice.......
As a Swede I must say that im pretty proud of our military technologies. We are a small country but we have one of the best military technologies in the world. Sweden was the first country to develop these kind of submarines. Then everyone started to copy us.. ;)
The thing is that we are always underrated as a country when it comes to military technology. Maybe because we are such a small country, no one cares about us.
Another underrated thing is our fighter jet, JAS 39 Gripen (The Griffin). There is a military exercise called "red flag" were alot of countries join. Sweden has amazing kill scores compared to other countries that use different fighter jets. What they say is that we were only beaten by the F-22 in kill scores, but just barley and that fighter costs alot more money then our fighter. You could by like 4-5 JAS 39 Gripen (Griffin) for one F-22.
Then there has been one exercise with Norway, they have the F-16, and the kill scores were 0-5, 0-5, 1-5. So, what I'm trying to say is that the JAS 39 Gripen (Griffin) is another underrated military equipment thing coming from Sweden, like our Gotland submarine.
But also imagine the fact that a country of only 10 million people produces one of the best fighter jets (and submarines.. :D) in the world. That's pretty impressive considering that no other country of that small population size in the world does the same.
Here you have another of our cool toys. An amazing stealth corvette:
ua-cam.com/video/FrPgOhVXsXw/v-deo.html
If you think that the Gotland class submarine is good you should look up the Blekinge class, wich is going to be Sweden’s new main submarine.
@@verozety4040 Nah I could build better in my backyard. ;-)
Yea agreed looks cool but it's just a toy really. Classical design failure many naval engineers get stuck with.
All that design and efford to reflect radar signals ... And then they put the heat exhaust of the pump jet propulsion above the water? lol!

Yeah, this was during the war games in mid 2000s to see if another country can penetrate a single US NAVY fleet. Don't worry, it wasn't real but that opened alot of eyes and gave ideas to counter act there signatures. Not sure how due to propriety information. You know, "For Eyes Only".
Yea tell that to the Chinese sub popping up alongside that US carrier, lol!
I don’t know for New Zealand, but the backbone of The Collins-class submarines in Royal Australian Navy is a diesel-electric submarines based on the Swedish Gotland submarin class platform developed by SAAB Kockums Sweden.
No aircraft carrier has been sunk since Vietnam, when the _USNS Card_ (a WW2 escort carrier) was mined by Viet Cong sappers (she was later repaired and refloated....the Navy, predictably, refuses to admit that she was actually "sunk", just "damaged and repaired"...She was sunk) in the Port of Saigon. Carriers are bonking-expensive, so most countries don't bother operating them....That's changing -- and the last time that happened, it was the 1930's.

we are building a next generation of submarines called Saab a26, the first will be ready in 2024. it will be equipped with all the new technology we have developed. it will be invisible on the radar.
Three facts neglected in the video (by a Swede):
1) The Gotland is designed to sink Russian navy vessels in the Baltics. The US would never let an aircraft carrier or a nuclear sub into the Baltics, even after Swedens accession to NATO.
2) Nuclear vessels emitt a lot of noice which makes them an easy target to silent subs. But watch out; China are developing air-indepentent subs suited for the South China sea.
3) Sweden have 5 (not 3) air- independent subs.
This happened during war games where countries compete to see if they can penetrate the defenses of the American carrier group. No real shots are fired, it's all simulated..
It's a good thing. Problems identified/problems fixed
check out a video titled Sinking a Aircraft carrier. 45 minutes documentary. (for your own entertainment not for reaction per se) it documents the months of work in a dockyard weakening the built in protections . And then the difficulties encountered actually sinking the ship. A Carrier wirth crew present and protections in place can be severely damaged but it will be extremely difficult to actually sink. Any ship that floats can be sunk.
Not the first time a carrier was sunk in an exercise. Wont be the last. AIP is the only thing special here.
Ok random unknown girl from New Zealand, I"m so excited to see your reaction to what this Swedish u-boat acheived
When a video says european or especially Sweden, the first mistake many people make is to think little of them. All european powers militaries are small, but they are advanced and every so often they do have times like this where the titan of the usa is bested by their tech and/or tactics. Luckily usa and europe are all allies forever but european military power is heavily overlooked.
I think a US aircraft carrier was sunk in the battle of Midway, that's the only time I know of.
Hypersonic missiles could be more dangerous to any super carrier than torpedoes. A direct hit could possible ignite the tens of thousands of gallons of jet fuel on the top deck and assorted missiles and nuclear bombs stored in its lower decks. The 6,000 officers and crew members could be trapped inside the carrier if the enemy missile hit without warning. Super carriers are simply huge and expensive primary targets.
WW2 Okinawa Uss Yorktown & Uss Hornet
to be honest it wouldnt hurt us navy to utilize that type of sub least for its own shoreline defense
I would agree but? USN elites fed money disagreed sorry. It's called the Non Nuclear Option to buy the AIP design subs and build them instead of the proposed nuclear submarines. Meaning for every 3 billion USD submarine? They could have had 10 of these submarines.
Never got into details even. Now imagine there is an Ocean Going version? Kinda why NATO's operational mission Ocean Shield saw those subs picked over underperforming nuclear subs.
Can't blame them for thinking they won't ever need to defend their own shores. The US military is not focused on defence like most NATO countries are.
The U.S. submarines are better than this sub. You just don't hear about it because they are too good for anyone to detect.
I do not know if you do singing reactions but you should do one for Home Free. I would say Man of Constant Sorrow would be a good place to start. Anything but Mayday that one must wait until you have heard a few of there song.
That's a old aircraftcarrier!🤣🤣🤣
USS Ronald Reagan is the second most modern Carrier in the Nimitz class. It was comissioned in 2003. That's not old for a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. And the Swedish HSwMS Gotland was comissioned in 1996. It's a fair match. Both are still in use.
Dark Docs is a great channel just wish they didn't do click bait tittles. They should of added it was a mock sinking during war game exercises. Loved your reaction at the beginning and when you realized it was a mock sinking it was priceless.
If you think about it, aircraft carriers have never been engaged in an all-out war such as World War II. There is no way to know for certain the foibles and full potentials of complicated weaponry until tested in unconventional scenarios. Only think of the number of perfect-looking rifles that militaries have either discontinued or radically redesigned after their first extensive real-war test.
Your comment is confusing. Many carriers were sunk in World War II. Japanese, British and American carriers and many thousands of men went to the bottom.
Read more about history, bajro, there were carriers in ww2, I guarantee in real world scenario if Sweden sunk us carrier the first time, but they won't get the second one the same way... these war games are too prefect military doctrine and strategy, so Sweden found a flaw so they can patch it up, good thing it was not a real-world conflict or several thousand men and women wouldve gotten killed.
You need to hit the history books.
Aircraft carriers fought the majority of all the pivotal battles in the Pacific in WW2.
Tell that to HMS Formidable during the Battle of Cape Matapan who used her guns in a fleet action in a surface-mode. Yes, she was in a battle-line, and it is according to the sailor who was aboard. Don't forget the Falklands War in which the RN used 2 carriers.
@@robbykwizz555 I want to know what to read. You read fake history.
The real proven fact history of JTFEX 06-2 is very clear ofcourse if you read it. US lease the Gotland for one year. Gotland sinks US carrier ... then again ... and again ... and again for an entire year. US then extends lease for 2 years? Gotland keeps sinking one carrier after another for another whole ... year.
USN never detected it for two whole years and the Gotland owned the USN with everything they threw at it. Scoring more CV and US attack submarine kills then all exercised combined setting a new record.
Why you say USN 'patch it up'? That is just a lie from fake history.
We remember Ocean Venture? We read real history again. One single submarine sinks US carrier during Ocean Venture. US find the flaw and patch it up? Nope same day one single submarine sinks another US carrier.
Please state this history you read. I think it's made up fake history.

This is not surprising at all. Any half decent submarine can sink any aircraft carrier. During RIMPAC '81 I was stationed on the USS Gurnard (SSN 662) a nuclear submarine that was built in 1969. We both sunk the aircraft carrier and escaped after the attack even though sinking the carrier temporarily gave away are position. I was on the firing key for this attack so I know first-hand what happend.

The US Navy responded to this stating submarines were not in play in the excersize they were doing , that was suppose to be 2 days later. The US fleet wasn’t looking for subs and not in threat so yes the Swedish SU either got confused or wanted to seem to do the impossible

Yeah, the producers of this video are guilty of CLICK BAIT. We all get suckered in by it from time to time. In reality, if Sweden had ever actually sank a US carrier, it wouldn't have ended well for Sweden. Even though this video had a very Hunt For Red October feel to it (actually one of my favorite movies), I'm sure that the US Navy has already figured out how to defend against this technology, but the world will never know what that defense is. I'd be fairly certain that they've also already figured out how to make their own nuclear subs more stealthy as well. US carriers have been sunk in the past, but it has been a long time since the last sinking.

The reason why the carrier alone can't detect the swedish sub is because it didn't have sonar. That's why the carrier depends on its escort vessels & *why* it doesn't travel oveseas alone.
The reason why it ALSO doesn't have sonar is the big boat is jam-packed with epuipment. Little to no space for sonar.

HELLO .. Many people today perceive big things in size ..? Size does not make one stronger, but is often only a larger target, and there with greater vulnerability ..! Technology or military muscle power, certainly does not always have to do with the use of billions of money, but in fact often far more often has to do with efficiency, and it may just as well be technologically cheap, and also have low muscle power, but which then hits precisely , while you yourself are invisible .. Such big words, self-confidence and a huge consumption of money, do not guarantee an effective defense .. !!!

Russia's new Poseidon nuclear torpedo makes current naval defenses obsolete, they could take out that entire battle group with just one and it wouldn't even need a direct hit.
Lol To all you haters out there,
Virtual is not reality. Taking a picture is not firing a real torpedo.
It would take far more than one torpedo to sink a US Aircraft Carrier. The things are "virtually" unsinkable.
Fire a real torpedo, and you lose the Stealth, And we just deploy a anti torpedo counter-measures. Similar to anti-missile technology, they destroy the torpedo before it reaches the ship.
Once you fire one you give away your position, and shortly thereafter we destroy your submarine.
That's reality!
