22 years in the Navy. 13 of which was on subs. Each and every man on those boats was smarter than the average bear. Every man was a brother and could be counted on to his job flawlessly.
Well, then I guess they were better than the guys in the Army infantry, lol. Was the food as good as the video shows? If so, better than Army mess halls.
Awesome Jim!! Thanks for your service!! My biggest regret not going in The Navy!! Joined NYPD at 21 and even though still could have joined at some point life just got in the way!!
Looking back at life as an old retired non military, I regret not having the guts to join the Navy. I didn’t swim. Pretty sure the sub guys are expected to at least swim. So when I say that my family and I are very grateful for your service and all those who serve. Where I worked, we were pissed if we had bad paper cut.

It was 100% the best thing for me at 18, I was a wreck less wild man lol. Appreciate your service. I only got to do 3 trident patrols, 2 on Ohio and 1 on Nevada, then right back to the SSBN to SSGN conversion in the shipyards lol.

9:52 I served on a nuclear submarine tender in Guam back in 1973. Boy, things have progressed since then, starting with women serving on board subs. Most civilians don’t realize that the US has mobile nuclear missile launch platforms patrolling the globe 365 days a year. This serves an incredible deterrent to Putin should he do something stupid. This makes each $4 billion sub worth every penny! We should all rest easier knowing this fact.
I'm retired U.S. Navy Helicopter Aircrewman-Rescue Swimmer. When I first graduated from the 4 schools I had to complete, our job ASW. I volunteered for a 4 day crew swap. I went on a L.A. class fast attack sub.(I'm from Bham Al and the sub was the U.S.S. Birmingham SSN 695). Anywho, it was fun for 4 days. Learned a lot by but nah, claustrophobic lol. I certainly admire and appreciate all the men and women in our submarine force. It must be incredibly hard to be isolated for long stretches of time! I'm quite certain that I couldn't do what they do every day, and words are not adequate to describe the respect I feel. May God bless you every one of your days! 😊😊😊❤❤❤
In 1965 we were in a Japanese port drinking when shore patrol quickly rounded us all up to escape to our ship. The locals were upset about a nuke sub in port. I'll never forget, as our little shuttle boat was gliding along about midnight, that we came upon the sub, and what an Erie sight it was. It was like a sea creature lurking for prey. Today the Japanese welcome our subs but it was a whole different experience back then.
Not all heroes wear capes. Those submariners are superman. There is no way in hell I could live in a tube underwater for months at a time crammed in that tiny little space with all those other people with no sunshine and no fresh air. I'd go bat crap crazy. I salute all of you submariners.
Back in those days we didn't have videos. I think a well placed video showing our military capabilities could serve as a deterrent for anyone not willing to mess with the power of the US military.
I've had really cool career that has afforded me much, but this is definitely on my list of "if I could do it all over again." Not sure I would last for careers, and mentally and physically so rigorous, but I'd SO love to give it a whirl for a few months. I've worked with several submariners and have heard some amazing stories - then you watch a video like this and it's hard not to get a little giddy...
Agreed. Visited the Nautilus a month ago. Well worth a visit. Tiny compared to modern boats, and a travel back in time to the days before computers. I had a great afternoon exploring... Uncle was a submariner out of Groton his entire adult life...

These guys are on duty for 24 7 day after day in a controlled limited space while many of us had jobs in the military working 5 8 hour days with weekends off and off base excursions available. I hope they get compensation when off duty to make up for their dedication to this critical duty.

OK, let's not get carried away. Other countries have similar toys. The US has a formidable navy but not compared to the combined strength of its perceived rivals and enemies. Real wars are never idealised one on one encounters. Just saying.
It's a good thing it is a volunteer service because there is no way in hell I'd want to be crammed in a tube months on end under the sea. Much respect though.
Served on 5 submarines during my career. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, minus ORSE, TRE, drills, and some of the PIA stuff! Oh, and Field Day! Some of the greatest people I know served on the boats!
