@@srkelley5 Yeah it is, just not quite as cool as a dedicated GPU, the graphics cardis usually the most important part when it comes to gaming, not that the GPD WIN Max is bad in any way, just that it would've been more "gaming" with a dedicated GPU

Actually if I were to buy, it'd be because of the TB3 port. Hopefully it is attached with 4 PCIe lanes. Ryzen is great, but I'd miss having the opportunity to use e.g. Aorus Gaming Box with this. I currently have a Dell Inspiron 13" 7391 2-in-1 convertible. With the eGPU it fully replaced my PC (which I sold months ago).
This little beasty is orgasmic. I needed exactly this device for all my computing. The only thing else I would want is to know various flavors of Linux. -Manjaro+Plasma -PopOS -Ubuntu -Mate Next upgrade should be a Graphene battery. Low heat, x2 capacity and no change of bursting into flames.
Interestingly I've seen how the Win Max can be adjusted to after watching different reviews. Similarly to how I thought androids were getting too big until I upgraded from the Motorola Atrix to the Galaxy S5. There's times where the Win 2 feels too small but there's no way I'd play my 15-inch "thin and light" gaming laptop in handheld mode if it had built in peripherals. This seems like a decent compromise.
My main and only problem with this device is the battery life. 2 hours is not good enough for me. I mostly want this for the higher end emulation and 2 hours just won't cut it. With 4 hours, I would definitely buy it. I so wanted this.
I don't use handhelds for gaming, but I've always had a similar mindset with cellphones. I will say it's a tough line to tread because it's not as easy as strapping on a larger battery cause that directly increases the weight. IPhones took so long to catch up on battery sizes until they saw people were willing to put up with the weight for the battery life
There's a 57Wh battery and the TDP can be set to 15W so four hours isn't out of the question with it. Most people who've got their hands on one have been testing it at max performance to find out what it's capable of rather than trying to eke out the battery for as long as possible, so we've not really got that good an idea how well it'd fare when tuned for battery life. However, with many demanding emulators doing most of their processing on a single thread and only making sporadic use of the GPU, it's entirely possible they'd still perform well on such a setup. Hopefully someone can give it a go.
I wish you'd use your influence with GPD and other companies to get one of them to make a Vita clone with 100% FLOSS on it, from the bootloader on up, the linux-libre kernel instead of vanilla Linux, no binary blobs anywhere, hardware like CPU, GPU, wifi etc chosen because it is 100% FLOSS compatible, a full size card slot for "cartridges" - SD being the most practical but XD or CF being preferable because they're bigger with more room for game logos and artwork. Have an XMB style GUI like DinguXMB or GP2XMB, NOT focused on pirated ROMs with logos of past consoles like RetroArch's XMB or most other devices in this category, but FLOSS games like SuperTux, SuperTux Cart Racer, freeDoom, OpenArena, and other games such as those on onpon4.github.io/articles/libre-games.html or libregamewiki.org/Main_Page. They could offer the games as dowloads via an elementary OS style App Center "pay what you want" model, plus physical game carts with the logo and art on the cart, in a box with manual etc for a fair price. This would get the FSF "Respects Your Freedom" certification and be part of their holiday gift giving guide, but of course users could wipe or modify the installed software and put whatever proprietary stuff on it they want, including ROMs - the device would not be locked down against its own user. That way the retro community would still get a great handheld and I'm sure an OS image with their preferred UI and cores would be up online almost immediately.
@ Can't cost any more money than it does from other companies. Look at Purism's Librem 5 smartphone, or the Pinephone. You are correct that one person's influence isn't enough. Taki would need to network with the larger scope of Linux enthusiasts, such as TLG and GamingOnLinux, and from what I'm gathering, that's NOT Taki's interest. He is a gaming hardware reviewer, not a software reviewer or the like.
There's only one device that matches that description but its a few months out. Though its a fairly open system with some nice features like how you can just buy an upgrade board instead of shelling out another 600-700$ for a closed sourced GPD. The Pyra is not as powerful as a GPD, but its more aimed towards the maker scene rather than the usual gamer/casual PC crowd.
@ A reviewer with 63,000 subscribers and rising, whose influence they consider important enough for them to fly him in and give him a look at upcoming products.
@Zahir Datoo Look at Techno ethical, Purism, etc. There's a market out there for hardware that is fully free. And if nobody cared about fully FLOSS games they wouldn't exist either. There are already a ton of Chinese "retro" handhelds that assume you're going to run pirated ROMs. If the market is big enough to support them all, one more or less isn't going to make a big difference, but being the first and only to have a focus on FLOSS games is a new marketing opportunity.

I really hope that GPD will eventually come with their own dock + egpu enclosure. Those are currently very overpriced for being just a pcie slot with a thunderbolt controller and a psu...
@@antoniorsoftware PSU is the "easiest" component to add so I don't understand why it should be a work for psu manufacturers. GPD have created multiple custom laptops, gpu enclosure would be a piece of cake for them to design and they could just include a pre-made power supply with it.
Same here. I may very well love this device as much as the Win2 but the increased size is enough for me to dismiss it outright. The Win2 already just barely fits in the biggest pockets I have and I'm not gonna start carrying around a bag just for this device. At that point, I'd carry around my Switch or Mag-15 instead. Win3 it is
Just one thing that I would dislike on this prototype, are probably screen brightness and bezel size. The screen just doesn't seem that good here on camera. Is it readable?
Then don't buy it. It's not too expensive, it's just too expensive for you. I bought my Win 2 for $400 when the going rate was $750+. I thought I was just being wasteful by even spending $400 on that, but I don't even own any other computer now (except my Win 1, which I also bought at $200 when it was being sold for $400+ on many forums) You can find a deal if you look.
Honestly, as someone who has a 2012 laptop and a very weak 2015 tablet, this seems like a device that you need to treat with a different mindset. This isn't a toy at $800, and if someone can go from carrying a Win 2, a Switch, and an I7S to just using this thing, and even editing videos directly on it, it has stopped being a toy, and is now simply a laptop designed for a specific subset of people. If you're part of the Venn diagram of "people who need a new computer" and "people who like to play video games a lot" and you're willing to deal with the compromises, this looks to be the device for that special person.
Terrible for typing and uncomfortable for gaming. I have a much more powerful pc I bought for 500 and a playstation I got for 300, I'll use one of those not this freakish hybrid
Nice story regarding the GPD Win Max and if I had this I would not even touch my switch anymore. Playing all your steam games on the go this way looks really cool. 😅
I'm getting tired of the people who post that - compare this with a gaming PC. This is a portable handheld. Let's see you bag your PC on a daily basis. - compare this with a laptop. This is a handheld PC. Let's see you attach an extending controller and play your 15 inch laptop like a handlheld. - those with a GPD win 2 and say this is too big and heavy. The reviewers who have had a chance to test it says it's fine. You can wait for the GPD Win 3 next year. - say this is too expensive... Don't compare this to a Switch or to a Desktop PC (Laptops have always been more expensive than desktops of similar capacity). Compare it with a similarly spec laptop. I think you'd find this priced reasonably. This is a very niche product. Either you're part of that niche or not. Me, I liked my GPD Pocket because I can type on it but I am jealous of those with a GPD Win 2 since they have a built in controller. This is the perfect device for me. Just wished it was thin like the P2 Max but I'm so getting this!
Someone just proved me wrong on attaching a controller to a laptop. He attached controllers to a 17-in laptop. HAHAHA I still prefer the Win Max. ua-cam.com/video/7V3AXU0mDAE/v-deo.html
@jvalex18 If you cut out the gaming buttons, for me to consider something as way less expensive and comparable, the laptop should be at least $200 cheaper. I want to see a laptop with a core i5 10th gen cpu, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, with thunderbolt 3, at the most is 10 inches at 1kg max weight (any bigger / heavier and it wouldn't be acceptable to me), with full service usb 3.1 type c, at least 2 USB A ports, with a full-size hdmi port, can emulate ps2 and ps3 as well as the win max for $600 at the highest price point.
@jvalex18 a) the win max is only $780 when you preorder. Your price of $880 is the retail after the campaign, b) the laptop you provided is nowhere near comparable. The win max is around 800 grams or 1.7 pounds. The laptop in the link is 4.76 pounds (2x - 3x the weight). Win Max has 16GB of ram, the HP only has 8gb. and the laptop is 15.6 inch, nowhere near to being handheld size. There is no way I'm carrying anything that heavy now. I'd rather sacrifice a little bit of power than portability. I worked with a 12" Thinkpad for over 10 years but after a couple of years with the 7" GPD Pocket, I'm never going back to a full-size laptop, let alone a 15 inch.
Like I said (and any other reviewer who has reviewed any GPD Product), GPD has a very niche market. Anyone who prefers a gaming PC or a full-size laptop is not part of that niche. GPD caters to people who like mega portability. I backed the Pocket 1 and now the Win Max because I love that level of portability. I didn't back the Win 2 because I'm not a fan of thumb typing. The Win Max basically has the gaming buttons of the Win 2, the keyboard typing layout of the Pocket 1 (which I prefer over the Pocket 2 and P2 Max), the build quality of the Micro PC (judging by the ports and the large airvents as well as the rugged looking construction), and the increased screen size that's closer to the P2 Max (while still being handheld). This is perfect for me (well... until GPD comes out with a Win Max 2, which could be 2-4 years from now). To me, the closest thing to a competitor would be the One GX, but it's a) nowhere near to completion as the Win Max, b) does not have the same level of sustainability as GPD Products (if you try looking for batteries for the Pocket and One Mix 2S, there's no contest as to availability), and c) I don't like the design where the screen doesn't take advantage of the entire width of the product. It exposes the gaming buttons when inside a bag and the screen is not as large as it could be.
@@KP-48-007 it costs $900. You can get a powerful gaming laptop for that price. This thing is too big and heavy to be a handheld and too underpowered to be a gaming device. I think the company that made it are just trying to see how much price gouging they can get away with.
If GPD is reading this: Plz hear me out !! Shrink the bezels a bit and implement a good quality camera on screen. Use the space of screen's back for such Gpu,battery, storage etc. like the microsoft surface book 3 Use Ryzen chips since they provide better performance.
The reason why they chose intel instead of ryzen was because amd was so busy making others they just simply don't have enough engineers. And intel engineers were available near them.
Like you, I also think buying an eGPU for the Max is a waste of money. Great review by the way, yet I wish you explained why you'd buy an eGPU for it Was it because you don't own a gaming desktop or laptop? If so, I understand, if not, I'm puzzled. Significantly? I doubt it. Maybe 100-200 dollars at most? Which is still pricey for many people. Miniaturizing cost money.

What
Interestingly I've seen how the Win Max can be adjusted to after watching different reviews.
Almost 2 years with my GPD Win max 2021 and I'm very happy, with my egpu works perfect as a hybrid PC

Yeah, the prices are way too high for just three components.
It would be a waste of their engineers, that is more a job for the PSU manufacturers.
@@antoniorsoftware PSU is the "easiest" component to add so I don't understand why it should be a work for psu manufacturers. GPD have created multiple custom laptops, gpu enclosure would be a piece of cake for them to design and they could just include a pre-made power supply with it.

Good point. I want something to put in my pocket

@@supernova-o3i I will be
It’s good, there are no doubts about it. But is to expensive. I simple can’t justify spending 800$ on this type of toy.
if you think about the specs and features it has and compare it to other laptops or similar products, it is actually cheap.
Then don't buy it. It's not too expensive, it's just too expensive for you.
I bought my Win 2 for $400 when the going rate was $750+. I thought I was just being wasteful by even spending $400 on that, but I don't even own any other computer now (except my Win 1, which I also bought at $200 when it was being sold for $400+ on many forums)
You can find a deal if you look.
This is actually pretty cheap, and it's not a toy it has full on PC functionally, it does more than just gaming so the price is justifiable.

I'm getting tired of the people who post that
- compare this with a gaming PC.
think you'd find this priced reasonably.
HAHAHA
I still prefer the Win Max.
ua-cam.com/video/7V3AXU0mDAE/v-deo.html
@jvalex18, if you can find me such a laptop, I'll buy one (you'd be doing me a favor, actually). =)
They must have paid him a lot for changing his "opinion"
Any idea how much it will cost?
Imo it shouldn't cost more than 600
@@KP-48-007 it costs $900.
You can get a powerful gaming laptop for that price. This thing is too big and heavy to be a handheld and too underpowered to be a gaming device.
I think the company that made it are just trying to see how much price gouging they can get away with.
When is this beauty out?
Having your honest opinion on these products is why I enjoy this channel man. Keep it up!
If GPD is reading this: Plz hear me out !!
Shrink the bezels a bit and implement a good quality camera on screen.
Use the space of screen's back for such Gpu,battery, storage etc. like the microsoft surface book 3
Use Ryzen chips since they provide better performance.
