  • I bought this battery case from China cost $15. It isn't MAKITA original battery case. It is 18V 9Ah battery case with PCB model BL18XXR1. I don't know why this PCB connected only 3 wires B-, B+ and B1. Let see how long the battery last. If you have experience with this, please share it with me in the comment section.

    The advantage of 18650 Batteries is that they are made of Lithium Ions.
    This means that 18650 batteries can be recharged an average of 600 to 1000 times without damaging or losing effectiveness. Another advantage is that they have zero or practically zero self-discharge.

    I didn't know you could get a kit like this. Thanks for sharing. I would point out that you did not use a Makita Charger. I've been trying to build Makita batteries and they work in the tool but they never work in the charger. So I just wire a standard balance cable on them and charge them in my 6S LiPO charger.

    This board is not really a Battery Management System, it only fakes the signals to the yellow connector; communication with the Makita charger to enable charging. And only the total pack voltage is monitored, not per series cell (normal Makita pack is 5 series and 2 in parallel; 5S2P).
    Mostly there is a temperature switch in series with the charge terminal and the B+ terminal to prevent overheating during charging.
    The PCB is powered from the first set of series cells at 3.7-4.2V, between B1 and B-. Therefore, this board has only three connections to the pack. The problem is that these first cells are then (more deeply) discharged by the standby current of the electronics, damaging them over the longterm.
    At the beginning of the battery pack development Makita designed there "BMS" boards in the same way. But nowadays these are improved with a full balacing protective BMS form Lapis Semiconductor, temperature sensor, potted in protective material.
    But okay.. these Chinese packs do work for some time, rather cheap..

      I am not that clear either, but my best take is:
      - each row of 3 batteries is connected in parallel
      - a set of parallel batteries is connected to the parallel batteries next to it in series
      - this gives 7.4v + 7.4v + 3.7v = 18.5v when they are in turn connected in series

    I have bought a very similar case (looks like it is from the same factory) for 14.4v Hitachi. The screw that holds the PCB was too long, and I punched one Cell when I was installing it. Resulting in an internal Short of that cell. It was super Scary, as I had a moment to find out what happened. I disassembled the pack as quick as I could with gloves and sperated the cells. The cell was super hot until it had no energy left.

    • @jarosawpe4353
      @jarosawpe4353 2 роки тому +3

      It's not that dangerous actually. I'd worry much more of total lack of heat shrinks or any other insulation on soldered joints.
      BTW I used to run couple of 5s packs with no BMS and charged them using Imax B6. After 6mos voltage difference between each cell was no greater than 0.01V, whereas I haven't seen a single OEM pack with BMS, where V difference was lower than 0,3-0,4V. More often than not, it was around 0,6-0,7V between each cell.

      @@kosorind it's 2021, not 2011. OEM Makita packs have had balance leads since "star protection computer controls" was introduced over 10 years ago.
      And pack longevity/reliability has been substantially better ever since. Makitas went from poor reliability to one of the best after they upped their PCB quality for better overheat, overdischarge and cell balance protections.
      We run over $10k in Makita equipment and I've taken plenty of broken tools/batteries apart over the years. Been a lot less broken batteries ever since we got everything updated to BL1850b and star protected tools.

    • @jaywelker5566
      @jaywelker5566 2 роки тому +2

      @@jarosawpe4353 it's not good for battery longevity. Any pack since Makita introduced star protection has been farrrr more reliable over time. We run about 30 5.0 batteries in our fleet of tools and they just don't fail like the old stuff used to.
      And never seen a single MODERN OEM pack get that far out of balance. They're dead on every time I have an opportunity to check them. OEM Makitas from pre-2011 and the Chinese PCBs based of that pack (without cell balance) would always have one pair of cells way out of balance compared to the others, because the PCB is powered by that first series cell rather than the whole pack. They were highly failure prone and I've rebuilt packs using these bootleg PCBs after the OEM threw a red/green error on the charger, they do not hold up like the OEM ones do. They aren't even adequate at protecting from an overheat condition, they let the battery cook longggg before ever cutting the battery rail.
      OEM 5.0s are so easy to get for next to nothing it's not even worth building hackjob DIY packs for our fleet. No sense in running weak link batteries on X2 tools anyways.

    • @jarosawpe4353
      @jarosawpe4353 2 роки тому +1

      @@jaywelker5566 point taken, might even correspond with my tiny bit of experience. Those DIY packs w/o BMSes lived rather shortly, but I always blamed individual cell quality.
      Can't tell for Makita-grade or higher, as I've usually dealt with consumer-grade battery tools - easier to find them in mint physical condition, minus cells/BMS/bad solder.

    I got my LG MJ1 18650 3500mAh 10A cells for $3.75 on sale (May' 2023) . I think Makita also uses LG cells, but probably different cell models. IMHO This build makes only sense for 9Ah pack since you can get a 2Pack original Makita BL1860 (6Ah) for ~$175 on Amazon/Home Depot! if you're using your pack heavily with power tools, I still recommend to use the original battery because a home built one like this, as professional as you will ever be able to built it at home, will never reach the Ampacity and overall quality of factory made original Makita Batteries. I think Makita's specs are 20A continuously and 40 peak on their originals! This is a lot of Amps and it needs to be taken care of!!!
    One question I couldn't get an answer on though: in other YT videos you can see how an original Makita BMS has 3 contacts on the left of PCB and 3 contacts on the right side. Considering the 5S2P, this makes the genuine BMS on the PCB able to balance the cells per pair fully(1 negative and 5 separate +). Even though my AliExpress set looks a little bit different from this one in the video, it also comes only with on additional cable for balancing ( in this video dark purple)! How the heck can this board in the video balance all cells? the unused longer laps of those nickel strips (which I do not have in my set) are meant exactly for this but there're no instructions where to solder it on PCB or if the PCB is able to balance all cells at all even if you solder it. I found some soldering points on my PCB marked as TP1-TP13 but I am not sure if those points are meant for the additional needed balancing contacts!

    Building battery JLD Tools impact how much?

  • @nathantaylor9998

    My Makita tools will last me forever but their stupid batteries don't last with that chip inside of them that bricks the battery after so many charges or after the batteries have sat for a while.
    Wish I was as talented as you and could do this for my batteries.

    Why don't you connect other pin to the BMS, only B+ and B- are soldered into the board. Quite confusing....
