And this arc basically ends at 219, 220-225 is filler. After that, the very end of 226 is when it starts setting up Water 7.
The anime changed Luffy's choice after this round's win - in the manga, it was Chopper, but in the anime they wanted a reason to have more rounds in filler episodes.
Speaking of filler, while episode 226 is largely non-canon, you're going to want to watch it for the canon part at the end. It's kind of important.
To me, the highlight of the Davy Back Fight is the round of the Groggy Ring, seeing Zoro and Sanji fight together for the first time is always a delight, like as soon as they agree to not be in each others way, they perfectly synchronize and completely annihilate the Groggy Monsters.
Filler is from 220 - the end of episode 226 at 19:30. Canon starts at 19:30 in episode 226.

I think there are so many things in One Piece that everybody can find something to love and hate about it. But at the end of the day, most people still love this series and continue watching/reading it, even if they don't love everything about it. So it's fine whenever you don't enjoy some parts of One Piece.
I personally don't care about combat scenes and then skim through them in the manga easily. It's a bit more difficult in the anime and therefore I'm always happy when the focus isn't the fighting because the rest of One Piece is so interesting and amazing. But I don't complain about the combat because I know it's essential to this story to have it.
In the manga at least it's three chapters. So the pacing feels surprisingly faithful, that's around 1 and a half episode until the goal equivalent to 3 manga chapters. 2 chapter per episode, that's a great pace for One Piece. As to One Pace, let me check, I have them all saved.
edit: It's 1 episode, around 23.5 minutes of actual action (if I remove the intro) in One Pace, so not that different from the real anime. Which isn't surprising because the anime doesn't really add filler content in this section, it's faithful to the manga, so they probably cut a bit on the time waster shots but that's it. In the normal anime it's around 19 minutes for episode 211 + 8 min until the goal for Ep 212.
So the final comparison is: 3 manga chapter = 27 minutes of original anime = 23.5 minutes of One Pace. Funnily enough this is one of my favourite chapter, I found the whole Davy Back Fight hilarious, and it wouldn't be anywhere near as good if they were proud cheaters xD And while the anime slaughters the arc it hasn't even started to destroy it yet (well it starts with chopper not being chosen at the end, that's the beginning of the butchery, but the whole groggy monster fight is faithful and relatively well paced).
Oh and peanuts just mean cheap in that context, it's the cheap strategy. In the original the third round (and final one, there's no other round) has been established from the start as a 1v1 vs Foxy so if they choose foxy they immediately win the last round too and can take back Chopper immediately too. Foxy is lucky nobody likes him in the SH or the games would have been over right there.
An important point that you mentionned in the first episode is that, put aside the fact that One Piece world building is very interesting and that this island is the bare minimum in this regard, there is nothing particulary fun at seeing Foxy pirates cheat again and again until eventually the plot or their dumb actions makes the action go forward.
What's interesting in this arc is that it shows us the crew in a particular situation where the stakes aren't too high but they're put in unusual dynamics.
There's a whole genre of Hanna-Barbera Cartoons that rely on the gag of compulsive cheaters losing to people who refuse to cheat and it's pretty clear that Oda is a big fan. (Edit: Also worth noting that this is the basic structure of Speed Racer)
In the anime, they've also changed Luffy's choice. Sherry is shot and not captured in the manga and therefore Luffy doesn't need to win the horse back. This means, he just wins back Chopper after the 2. round of the Davy Back fight and they proceed with the last round.
So, starting ep 213 we have filler again because unfortunately, Toei extended this arc with filler. The next canon ep is 217 (in 215 you will just see briefly that Luffy takes back Chopper after winning another round). Therefore, I hope you aren't watching ep 213-216. It's unnecessary filler stuff.
Can you imagine being the music director at Wit Studios and someone comes up and says, I need you to write some new music for our One Piece version, you know, better than what Toei did. Good luck with that.
I do think that is one area where they are going to have some trouble, the music direction in the original is quite good.
The padding of Long Ring Long Land in the anime is not the cleanest, but I found it light-heartedly fun enough and the gags funny enough that I did not really mind. Plus, there are some important story trends to draw from it, most notably that Foxy - an utter joke by the standards of the second-quarter Grand Line - is still a threat to the Straw Hats, which is an important perspective shift from punching god in the sky.
I really, really want you to knock this shit out in one day, make a 2 hour video and be done with it lol. It's so maddening to wait WEEKS for the good stuff to happen
Toei does a great job, the music is damn near perfect, and the animation kept improving as the technology did. You hit it with the Wit version, we're all looking forward to it because it won't have to use fillers, or stretch episodes out the way Toei did.
If you want to save some time…212 - 217 is literally pure filler. It was purely added to fill runtime and doesn’t have anything to do with the manga. 217+ is still Long Ring Long, but it’s back to the canon part of the arc. If you’re skipping filler then I don’t think anyone would mind sticking to just the canon bits and saving everyone a week
Good, now skip to the last part of the davy back fight (the race, the ball game and the fight are the 3 canon parts) and reread it (maybe 25 minutes of your time) to remove the weird filler decisions from your mind.
I think Groggy Ball is pretty funny. I love that Zoro and Sanji are teammates and don't win without actually working as a team.
I find it strange that to you the game isn't interesting because the opponent is cheating and you are saying, therefore the Strawhats don't have to overcome a problem. But regardless of cheating or not, they have to find a way to win anyway and because the Foxy Pirates are cheating, to me it's actually more interesting to see how they will solve this problem or will they really lose and then lose another crewmate to Foxy.
Same, i think the cheating makes the game way more interesting. I honestly would have never thought he would hate groggy ring so much, it's usually regarded as the best game in this arc🤷♀️
This is an arc that I cant stand personally.
It was officially stated that the One Piece remake is to make it more accessible for new fans, who are put off by the old animation style and the huge amount of episodes. So yes, there won't be filler anymore and they will only stick to animating canon scenes without extending scenes just to fill the episode. I can't express enough how excited I am for this remake.
The foxy arc is unfortunately Canon though. And G8 is actual filler. I hope they adapt G8 into the remake, and keep the foxy arc off it
@@gwidao123 It wouldn’t make sense to add the G8 in the remake since it’s only filler. And Long Ring Long Island isn’t so bad in the manga because it’s short.
@@ely03cassandra They could have kind of a cameo of G8. Like, when they are falling from Skypeia, they see the Marine base under them, and either they somehow (impact dial?) steer away, or a gust of wind pushes them.
It wouldn´t take more than a minute, and it´d be a nice nod to an arc that many love.

well of course there wont be filler, after all filler is made when the Mangaka doesnt have new material out yet, so Toei and other Animation studios have to fill in the gaps.
To me, this arc does a fantastic job of showing how un-serious the Strawhats are tackling challenges in the Grand Line. The show has spent a significant amount of time explaining how dangerous the Grand Line is. Yet, we keep going into danger without understanding that there are actual, serious consequences. Life allows us to learn our lessons the easy way, or the hard way... that's the point of this arc. This is also the first time we see Sanji and Zoro acknowledge each other's strength and work together.... so proud of them!

I think that with One Piece, reacting to more than 2 episodes at a time might help with the issue of filler, the occasional long and drawn out backstory and/or the overall pacing in the anime as well. That should help counteract so that you get to more of what makes One Piece so well loved, that being the story/journey

Surprised you hate groggy ring so much, it's usually very well liked even by people who hate this arc. I personally always find Zoro and Sanji teaming up and bickering really fun lol

The pacing feels really good in the manga. I Obviously want you to keep watching, but I think it would be cool to read an arc you've watched just to see the difference in pacing.
The whole Davy Back fight is just a palate cleanser, though it's got some nice foreshadowing.

Yes, you just have to get through this arc as fast as humanly possible. It is what it is. Good news is that Water 7 actually begins with the final episodes of this arc, as they start setting it up. So it will be shorter than Crunchyroll is telling you.

Hello Nerdman, longtime viewer. I bet on some of the more beloved episodes that you had a negative opinion about, people were sore about it. Ep 211 is not an episode that anyone is going to be mad at you for disliking. It feels more like filler than G8 did, but it in fact isn't. I've noticed that Oda does a thing, he oscillates between comedy and seriousness, and the way he interweaves the two is masterful.
Without upcoming spoilers, since you're aware that Water 7 is supposed to be particularly excellent, it would be reasonable to presume that shit's about to get real. One can then look at the Davy Back games as a large dump of comedy before a commensurately large dump of seriousness.
On a separate note, if I had to sum up the theme of this arc in one word, it would be nakama. One Piece is best watched in Japanese with subtitles over the English dub, otherwise significant context is lost, and the Japanese voice acting is God tier. One problem with the English subtitles, though, is a lack of explanation as to the meaning of the word nakama. I originally watched One Piece with fan made subtitles on a free site, and around the Arlong arc, a fan made disclaimer was added about the meaning of the word nakama and its importance to the show, and I will forever be grateful that they did so, because it is important. Nakama is often translated as friend, but this is inaccurate, it is just usually the best approximation in most circumstances. The word friend as you or I would understand it would be tomodachi, while a "best friend" would be shinyu. Nakama is also translated as crew, this isn't wrong, but the real word is something in between friend and crewmate. To be nakama is to be on the crew, but it's a kind of friendship different from normal friendship, like shared stakes. If army guys are together getting shot at in the trenches, they're nakama. We just don't have an equivalent word the concept. I think we should just call it nakama, we call big waves tsunami, I think people can handle one new word. This long nakama rant is all to say that the idea of nakama is very important as a theme in One Piece, as a whole, but especially this arc. A past example would be when Luffy breaks through the rubble after defeating Arlong; he doesn't say "you are my friend", he says, "you are my nakama". There is a distinction.
So, understand nakama, and perhaps, perhaps not, it might be prudent to evaluate this and upcoming events as being thematically pertinent to the concept of nakama. Enjoy your journey, we are on the cruise.

I strongly think that Nerdy will enjoy One Pace significantly more.
Since you discuss about all the padding and filler, I would personally recommend starting One Pace part way through Eneis Lobby, or during the arc that follows Eneis Lobby. That's when it starts to have more significant problems imo (except this arc which has lots of padding issues)

I remember watching the Davy back fight episodes a couple of years ago - it sticks in my head as probably the worst bit of one piece. Borderline unwatchable. Otherwise, the rest of one piece is great!

I'm going to be honest I just went through LRLL a couple of months ago rewatching with someone and I almost skipped watching your reactions to it because I've kind of had enough of the Foxy Pirates.

I loved the Water Seven saga but hated the Long Ring Long Land arc.
when oda was writing this it was sandwiched between two movies and he was also preparing to marry his now gf so i give anime long ring a pass on being weirdly paced

END - yeah, the One Piece remake will definitely not be padded out like the original, not with most of the story having been told already and Oda recently starting to write the Final Saga. i hope the remake includes cover stories though, very few actually got turned into One Piece episodes.
213 - 216 is what they call "anime canon". It's extended rounds and just filler.

I would probably skip most of this arc. I really don’t think you’ll like the filler part of this arc at all. But don’t forget Oda likes to introduce things that may not pay off until waaaay later.

Skip 220-225. It's all filler, and it'll save you 3 weeks and quite a bit of sanity.
Nerdy is 100% right about the unnecessary scenes, but we as fans all know that. Sucks that One Piece was made in a time where weekly shonen anime were the norm.
That being said I enjoyed both episodes greatly. I'm a sucker for Zoro and Sanji team-ups and this is the first time where they truly had to fight with each other (Arlong Park doesn't really count). Every fan of them feels a bit nostalgic about this particular fight.
One pace has this arc down to 6 episodes.
I think one piece pacing is not the best but watchable until episode 500 or so. After that it's atrocious, especially in couple of arcs.
At least you've laughed enough while watching your least favorite episode of one piece

ill be honest, to me this is the worst arc in one piece. when I watched it the first time i started clicking through the episodes because I really wasn't enjoying it. even the canon stuff without the filler just isnt fun. theres some important stuff at the end that sets up the next arc, but these earlier episodes are the only canon part of the story I would say is skippable.

Who tell you to watch this arc in the original anime? You have it in one pace and it is only 6 episodes. There are some arcs that are not worth to watch it in the original anime. Long ring long land is one of them. Any fan would recommend the manga or one pace for new people.
Even in the manga Foxy and the Davey Backfight is the low point of the entire story.

This is one of the best arcs in One Piece. Then you can stop watching at Dressrosa. They start doing 4 frames per episode. Such a waste of time.
