- I love the state of South Dakota... this video is on how to become a resident and I have done my best to include EVERYTHING you need to know. It should take you 24 hours in South Dakota, or less... it's that good!

@@aaron___6014 The answer is yes. If you have ever visited Mexico and wondered why there was SO MANY South Dakoka license plates this is the reason why. The amount of SD plates in Mexico is disproportionate to the state's population.
I just returned from South Dakota with my new SD driver’s license. I was a resident of San Francisco until I moved to Mexico City last year. This video was immensely helpful, especially the step by step instructions. Thank you Taylor!

Good video on how to get a SD driver's license...but there is a lot more to it than that to establish legal domicile for tax purposes, especially if you are moving from a tax hungry state such as NY or California..items such as: establishing your banking in SD, transferring the account address for credit cards and other services to SD, getting doctors and dentist/medical insurance in SD, registering and insuring your vehicles (if any) in SD, establishing a paper trail that you have left NY by canceling your apartment lease & utilities, selling property, shipping a few boxes of stuff to SD, renting a uhaul, canceling NY clubs/joining SD clubs (if that's your thing), forwarding mail to SD etc etc etc....not doing a few of these things could set your old state to say you never left and demand tax payments and hefty fines....especially when they prove you never went back to SD after your one day in the state to get your drivers license and then told the world about it in a UA-cam video. Plus you might want to investigate and explain to your viewers that the PMB you describe does not solve all "Moving to SD" problems...apparently many banks and financial institutions these days will not accept a Personal Mailbox address...likewise medical and car insurance companies may not accept PMB addresses. Some car insurance companies will not insure you unless you are also insuring an RV...go figure. A quick check around the internet should validate the points I make here.
Exactly! When my parents moved out of Minnesota for Florida, MN Revenue challenged their FL residency and they had to prove, with credit cards and utility bills, that they lived in FL for at least 6 months that first year. Once you've established that first year, then you can travel year round and your old state can't come after you.
What I just found, 1 1/4 years into my SD full time traveler journey, is that the banks (and maybe other financial institutions) are prohibited from accepting PO Boxes as the residency address. Further, it seems that banks do not make a distinction between POB and PMB. For example, I found in the Ally bank FAQ that they do not accept PO Box addresses nor addresses from "mail drop services". My bank finally noticed I'd changed to a PMB address and sent me a letter saying they were going to lock my account. The only way out was to use the address of a relative. They are quite okay to use the PMB as the mailing address, but not the residence address. This was true even though I pointed out my SD drivers license has the PMB address and therefore SD considers that to be my residence.

Good clear info. Since 2017 I have not lived in the US but am permanently travelling in Europe, mostly UK. Am using a very good mailing service in Texas but still using my Hawaii drivers license. Hawaii is a ‘sticky’ state and changing to SD will be helpful. Thanks to lousy US law I still have to file US taxes every year but the Feds don’t care where I am as long as I pay my US tax. SD residency doesn’t work for those who actually live in another state but for those who have no state it sounds great. Thanks.

This only works IF you don’t own property in another state where the state can claim domicile. For example, in Virginia, you pay state tax on income earned in Virginia even if you don’t live in Virginia. If you reside in any state for a given number of days (specific to the state), the state taxing authority can declare you a state resident for income taxation purposes. Might work best if you are constantly on the move…never spending too much time in any one place.

But you'll pay plenty in sales tax, even on groceries when you're in state, so there's that.
Actually to renew it looks like you are allowed to renew online for the first time; so only have to visit once every 10 years.
This seems like an ad for Americas Mailbox, just like the last video I watched. Both recommending the highest costing plan lol.
Even though you claim to cover the whole process, you've missed some important points and steps.
The main thing to know is that SD's program is for full time travelers. You sign an affidavit saying you're not renting or owning any housing elsewhere, and are instead traveling full time. For most of us that means we have to pack up our current housing, put it in storage, etc... in order to truthfully be a full time traveler, that means no fixed abode.
The next thing to know is that it's not just about gathering documents. You must show documents that demonstrate your chosen mailing address. That means changing addresses with financial institutions, a process that can take a month or two before statements show the new address.
The problem with America's Mailbox is the city it's in does not have a well-connected airport. Okay, we're talking about South Dakota, which has no city with a large enough airport to have good flight connections. The impact of this is, if your trips to/from SD are by air, you're paying more for the flights. We chose to make our home base in Sioux Falls because it's airport is a little businer and a little more connected.

Search phrase: "south dakota full time traveler affidavit" - and in my search engine, the page "Driver's Licenses for Full Time Travelers | SD DPS" came up as the first result.
Any DMV works for any SD address, you don't have to go to a local towns DMV where your mailbox is.
@@abcd123906 Yes, because this is about where you pay income taxes. So if I reside in Mexico earning USD and am a legal resident of SD I pay SD tax rates. The biggest benefit to SD is for people who want to take their vehicle to their new country. It waives the requirement for US car insurance so you are not paying double in two countries. Otherwise I'd stay in TN which has all the othersame benefits except this one.
This has all changed in recent months and now employers are not able to pay unemployment taxes to the state of SD forcing people to change their domicile. Americas mailbox users are getting notified in droves about this change and employers of people that are using this mail service are being forced to change the employees tax status for the state. I just changed to SD and now have to start looking for some place else to start the process all over again.

Hi, I wish poster did mention or respond to these comments. Having worked at a few major financial institutions and actually coming to learn about this all of this while working at one. A client had a flag on it about there address I think it was my best address (Google it) similar to company he mentioned for PMB.
At least at the company I was at when flag occurs like this ( as I'm sure they have list they compare account and addresses to ) but then the manual account approval team literally Google map street viewed your address and it became a headache from there. So, that is a very legit concern.
I recently went through that. However, even though online wouldn't let me change the address I called the bank and just told them it was this or nothing since I wouldn't have a permeant address and I wasn't going to update my address every two weeks or months depending on my travel schedule. The associate put my pmb address in.

Unfortunately you can no long vote in SD if your are not an actual resident, using a business address or a mail forwarding service address negates you right to vote. Governor Noem signed bill 139 in March.

I don't care about voting in the local elections.
Everything signed in July 2023 was just reversed in Feb '24. SB 17 was one of 2 that accomplished this

Awesome info! Why did you choose SD over other non-tax states? (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming)
Probably because literally all you need is a receipt of a hotel stay for 1 night. All the other states you are required to do a bunch of other bull shit. South Dakota you don't need to be there at all and you only have to come back once every 10 years. On top of that you don't have to physically go there to get your renewal.
Great video. But spend a few bucks with the local people before exiting the state and every time you visit. :)

Therfore you can't be a citizen of SD.

We plan to travel full time for the next 10 years at least. Have sold about 90% of our belongings and will travel with only 2 backpacks and two carry ons!!

Yes. It is your mail box. What's great about the service is no matter where you are you can pick your mail up anywhere.

Where you actually live matters, most states have residency laws.

The only issue with SD is medical, you under 65 and have a med issue, you have to travel back to SD. the winters are horrible and it’s the number one state for tornadoes. Now understand why nobody lives there.

Its from a mailbox service, like a UPS private box,etc. You have that as your "billing address" on the hotel paperwork. Like a proof bank statement.
Hi Taylor, thanks for being so detailed in your video. I have one remaining question- I am arriving in South Dakota on a Friday and am only staying there that night. Since the DMV is closed on the weekend, would I be able to go to the DMV in the morning and show them my hotel receipt for that night? Or would that not count since it was not in the past year? If you don't want to give up your driver's license from another state can you just get a South Dakota ID? And then can that be used to register your vehicles in SD?
A state Id and a drivers license have different applications. It is very difficult to obtain more than one type of identification card at the same time. The vehicle can not be registered in SD if you only have an ID card.

I'm a licensed contractor in the state of California, I have a simple question, why do you think in your opinion that South Dakota has more leniency to business owners and residents? For example, contractors in your state are not required to have a state license or pay any license fees, in California it's the opposite, what is your opinion on this?
Hey GD. I don't have an opinion on that. I chose SD as my state of residency because I live mainly outside of the US.

I actually did both, but just in case I called the hotel right after booking it online to triple confirm that they would put the address on the receipt that I asked for
They said “of course, whichever address you want on there”

THIS IS JUST A PROMO HUSTLE-you do not need to use these service. UPS has best mailboxes-but others good too
A Virtual mailbox is excluded it says right on the site. UPS does offer boxes similar to a USPS post box but ensure what ever company you use is NOT considered a virtual address.

It's done. The gig is up with South Dakota. They just changed their voter registration requirements to prevent nomads from voting AND their tax laws regarding pmb remote workers who work for companies out of state-PMBs/POs are NOT valid anymore even though they don't collect state income tax.

Just to clarify, if my Utah DL has a gold star which means I presented by birth certificate to the Utah DMV, do I still need to provide my birth certificate as well? I had that years ago but now it is lost, and my passport is long expired. Requesting both will take a few months and I'd rather not wait that long. 2nd question, do I need to surrender my Utah DL?

Good in theory but high tax states are aware of this and will come after you. When my parents moved out of Minnesota for Florida, MN Revenue challenged their Florida residency. My parents had to prove with credit card receipts and utility bills that they were in fact living in Florida for over 6 months a year. It's not enough to not live in a state but you have to prove that you are living in your new state for at least 6 months that first year. After the first year, then you're home free. Be careful!
Don't be scared! Your parents followed the law. Just follow the steps. Don't J walk you might get a ticket or get run over.
@PA96704 I guess you didn't understand my reply. They didn't just do it by the book to be good little pawns. Thankfully, they followed the book because Minnesota Revenue challenged their claim. My parents had to prove to MN Rev that they were indeed out of state by where the purchases were made on their credit card statements. Not just where their statements were mailed to, but where the purchases were made on the statement. So, if you can fake that, then good luck

jury duty is tied to your voter registration you must ensure that whatever state you have a drivers license that you have unregistered yourself from voter registration to not be selected for jury duty

Only question I have, if you go live abroad, why do you still need to have an established domicile in the US if you don't live in the US anymore? I left my home country of Australia and have no domicile there now - it's currently California (where i've lived and worked the past 9 years). But I am looking to exit California and if I exit the US completely, I shouldn't need to maintain a domicile nit he US - not even South Dakota - anymore, correct? Is this only for US citizens looking to return some day?
Because US laws are screwed up. Just look at weed laws. Many states have legalized weed, but still banned federally.
Banks, Brokerages, Employment, etc.
US citizens are taxed regardless of where they live. US is one of the very few countries that does this. So Americans abroad, like me, need to maintain ties to the US in many cases for banking, credit cards, erc.

No it’s actually a physical address that you get. It’s not a PO Box. It’s a “Personal Mailbox”. You use their street address and they give you a “unit number”. Check out AmericasMailBox.com - that’s who I used and am really happy with it

@@Mike-kp8ej, South Dakota is very friendly toward permanent travelers - I believe it is mainly for people that are RV’ing all over the place. It’s not something to do if you are genuinely a resident of another state. I recommend it for people that are traveling full time. For sure. You can register it online. It's an incredibly friendly state for travelers.
