    I’ve been a Rolex snob my entire life. I have a yachtmaster, a Daytona and my daily watch which was an Explorer II polar. I got tired of losing time with my Explorer and I don’t like the YM or Daytona for daily wear so I sold the Explorer for a little profit and picked up the Planet Ocean GMT. After 2 weeks it’s the best watch I’ve ever owned.

    I bought this exact watch in Dubai about 2 years ago, and it's been my daily wear since. It's frankly an amazing watch, and it strikes the right balance for me. Masculine, but not flashy. It's a working tool watch, but still looks really fantastic on the wrist even in a suit. I have a serious dislike for Rolex, and the Omega is, in my mind, a perfect watch. It doesn't have the flash appeal of a Rolex, but those who know, know.

    it definitely looks thicker than it actually is. I had the same notion until I saw it in person at my local AD. it is definitely stunning and gets way more wrist time than my Sub.

    I bought this exact watch around 6 weeks ago. It looks amazing and feels really solid. It gains around 1 second per day which is better than I expected and the adjustable clasp is really useful. Hopefully it’ll serve me well for many years.

    Gorgeous! The bezel metal-in-ceramic is called LiquidMetal. Also, related to your comments on the use of the dive bezel, I would suggest one should use it thusly: Turn the bezel counterclockise, stopping it when it's X minutes ahead of the current minute hand location, where X is the number of minutes of bottom time you intend to stay at a particular depth. So if you intend 15 mins of bottom time, you'd stop the bezel 15 mins ahead of the current minute hand position. Now, when the minute hand reaches the bezel pip you know it's time to head up. It also means that if the bezel gets bumped the worst thing that can happen is you will reduce the amount of time spent on the bottom (since the bezel only rotates counter clockwise). Using the bezel this way to time your dives is a safety feature.

    I bought the Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black a few months ago. Absolutely love the watch. Perfect blend of aesthetics and cutting edge technology. It has the 8906 movement, which I think is the same as the 8900 except for the added GMT movement. Omega is really on top of their game, IMHO.

    Great review and beautiful watch. I agree with everything people said in the comments about it being too thick, but that might be the kind of flaw that, with a lot of wear, becomes merely a pet hate in a watch that you love, rather than an actual dealbreaker.

    Thanks for another great review, and thanks to Bernard Watch for recognizing the value of J Anothny's reviews. I love black dials, especially with a date only, and Omega seams to speak to my tastes regularly, and this one is no different. I like the new ceramic bezels, but they do take away a little vintage apeal, as I really love some earned patina as well. Thanks again, and keep the video's coming!

    I love my PO 8500. I opted for the 42 mm version, and I'm a big guy (6'-1", 270#), so it wears perfectly. It has substantial heft, and I think I got more watch for my money than if I had bought a Rolex. But that is my opinion. This watch is accurate and robust. I will never flip this one.

    I just bought the prior version black Chronograph Planet Ocean from Bernhard Watch. Their price and service were excellent. I can't agree more with your assesment of Omega's step up in quality of movement and finishing. This thing is miles ahead of the Blue Seamaster Chrono I bought in 2004. I actually traded it in on the P.O. The ceramic bezel is an excellent upgrade over the scratch magnet aluminum bezel of old. I too love the chunky tool watch size of my 45.5 version and I've always been a sucker for a double domed saphire crystal.
    Great review!

    I just went to my local AD a few days ago and checked it out. It is on the same level as the current sub, but I wish it was a little thinner. But yes, they def fixed the bezel, it finally feels like a precise instrument.

    That's an awesome watch; definitely more feature packed to justify the price. Could pretty much be a 1 watch collection if not for the size.

    The new Omega PO lines are awesome and for the smaller wrist fellas like me the 39.5mm is perfect at 14mm thick is even a tad thinner than the cal2500 and the other guy big boy DS. Although the cal8800 doesn't have the same power reserve as the cal8900 due to the one barrel set up, but with 50hr is right up the alley with the other guy little brother the Sub. Everything else is superior imo. Awesome review as always my friend!

    That's an amazing watch,the finishing is excellent I wasn't expecting it to be so good. The bracelet looks very well made and I like the bezel edge and shape. I was thinking about a 300m but this is so good that I'll have to check it out before I make my final decision. I never really considered it because of the helium escapement valve and price but it does fit with the design and the price difference to the 300m isn't that great.

    This for me I would buy over a new sub. I am waiting for the movement to come out in the Aquaterra, and globe master and I think they are the best 3 watch combo. Planet Ocean as a dive, Aquaterra as an everyday, and globe master as a dress/ travel watch. Great review, you have made my week.

  • @drhombus242

    There are a lot of comments commenting on the thickness. I just wanted to give my take on the issue as it was one of the things I was worried about when looking to buy this Watch. Now obviously it is a thick watch, but I think it looks slimmer than it is on the wrist. Surprisingly, the thickness hasn’t bothered me at all for daily wear either. It is a heavy Watch, but I actually like that a lot and the way the crystal “disappears” and highlights the dial is truly mesmerizing. I’d say that if you are considering this Watch and are put off by the thickness, try one on. It may confirm that it is too thick, or you may find that it actually works quite well.

    I have the 42mm blue liquidmetal titanium PO (8500 movement) and I agree that the quality is second to none. The movement and the bezel are definitely ahead of Rolex technologically, and I prefer the look of the PO, but the white gold hands and indices on the Rolex are great for long-term appearance and the thinner case is more popular, but I have a big enough wrist that the chunk of the PO is appealing to me. The anti-reflective coating on Omega is well ahead as well. I wish my PO had the adjustable bracelet like my other Omegas, but other than that, it is perfect to me.

    I’ve has the 8500 P.O. for a couple years now, and it’s a beast. I love it. The face and bezel is more of a matte ceramic. However, I love the gloss here, and of course the micro adjustment! Maybe a trade in, is in the near future.

    I'm a bit late to the party, but nice review J. Anthony. I just recently bought the new Planet Ocean Deep Black (black), which has the GMT function (8906 movement). Absolutely love the watch! Omega really hit a home run IMHO. The ceramic is extremely rugged, having been dropped and banged into things several times, but not a scratch on it. Accuracy of this new Master Chronometer movement is really quite unbelievable. When kept on a winder at night, my watch is gaining no more than 2-3 seconds per MONTH! Believe it or not. Hats off to Omega for raising their game so much.

    Own Rolexes and omegas and have owned models of these brands since 1983 since I had the money to buy a good watch, I’m 58 now , Rolex are brilliant, but with the metas certificate and master chronometer rating plus 15 000 gause technology wise I would say omega are overwhelmingly upping the game. Plus omega build quality is equally good or if not better than the rather stayed Rolex of today, having said that, it is only my opinion and I’m not an expert just a hobbyist. Also I would like to add I love 💓 both brands

    Love the watch. It's a worthy alternative to the Rolex Submariner(I'd probably say that the Cartier de Calibre Diver and Breitling Superocean Heritage are as well). It's good that this version has a similar system to the "glide lock" on the Rolex Submariner - that was missing in previous version. Got to say that, the updated movement makes the watch very thick and top heavy - if it was just a little thinner like the original, then it would be almost perfect. It's still however - a stunning looking watch - and one the best in Omega's current line-up.

    A few people have concerns about the thickness of the 8900, no one has mentioned the Planet ocean calibre 8800 39.5mm it's a lot thinner than the calibre 8900. similar size to the Rolex Submarriner.

    great review. just got Planet ocean yesterday. but it's an older 2500 42mm version. should be 2 gen back from yours. but lovely watch. love it much more than the earlier smp which I've sold. the PO u reviewed solved some of the things I don't like about mine: diver extenstion, links using pins, alum bezel, and in house movement. but I think the seamaster 300 is the perfect seamaster without the helium valve.

      I feel very similarly: it's kid of a beautiful doorstep. The great thing about the old SMP was at 11mm thick you could wear it with anything. The PO, on the other hand, lacks versatility so I don't know that I could ever justify buying one.

    Very persuasive vid J.! I was not sold on these initially; didn't like the font of the numerals as they went away from the original on the Seamaster 300 and didn't like the extra markings on the dive bezel. But your video with gorgeous 43.5mm version, glimmering in the studio lighting! I now need to find a way to get one. Still, I would take a near new-in-box generation 1 with cal. 2500 movement first, only because it is 2 and-a-bit mm thinner. But finding a new generation one is near impossible. So this 8900 would be a great consolation prize. (I can't see it yet on Omega's website.)

The new movement is incredible. It definitely gives the competition a run for their money. Overall, the watch is impeccable. Great fit and finish. The new bracelet is even beefier than the previous versions and those were substantial already. FYI, the PO has always had an all brushed bracelet and action on the bezels of POs has always been great and far better than the Seamaster 300M Diver. The new bezel feels like butter - so smooth.

    Great review! Back in 2008, I was 'employed' in Kuwait & was earning enough that I went to their Avenues Mall (6th Ring Rd, or so!) & tried on the Omega Seamaster 300m 2254.50 - wow! Then.., I made a HUGE MISTAKE: I saw the Planet Ocean (orange bezel then) & EVEN WORSE, I threw caution to the wind & asked to try it on...not wow, but..WOW!!! It felt like a buttery-smooth fine Italian Leather (the bracelet was SS, though)..too bad my financial sense over-road my LITERAL LUST!😔 ...so, I bought the 300m.

    Anthony, thank you for another great review! And thanks to Bernard Watches for loaning you the piece for review. I haven't seen any of the new ceramic bezels/dials in the flesh yet. That Planet Ocean does look beautiful. I agree about the orange accents adding to the look. Again Brother, another great honest review. Please keep them coming!

    Co-axial and display back require a thicker case. Lovely looking watch overall, but Wears very proud on the wrist which borders on obscene if wearing with anything other than casual wear.

    Wow great review JA. I'm lucky enough that have the older model with the orange numerals and the black bezel. Love the case back and the movement too. Wish mine had all that, but I still love it. Only snag of course is the high price which I certainly could not aspire to. However in comparison to a sub or a dweller it's a piggin bargain!
    Keep on doing what your doing good sir. Loving it and the video quality is great now too.

    I've owned the Planet Ocean 2500 and 8500. So it's interesting to see this 8900.
    I like that they now actually match the bezel color to the face, which was not happening on the 8500. Those applied numerals look better in orange, as the mirrored finish tends to vanish into the dial in many lighting conditions.
    I do hope that this new rating makes the piece more accurate. My 8500 ran four seconds fast every day, which is within COSC, but was pretty disappointing and in fact less accurate than my 2500.
    For me though there are two big issues that kill this watch. One is the thickness. This has the thickness of a Rolex Deep Sea! Just insane. And I don't find the large sapphire back particularly comfortable vs a metal case back. There's no upside. I'd rather have half the depth rating and a thinner piece. It's all well and good to brag about 600m of water resistance, but even the most enthusiastic amateur diver is not going to be going below 40m, with 60m being quite extreme. So to make a watch with those deep bragging rights is all well and good, but less than 0.001% of owners would ever need more than 10% of its capabilities, and the penalty you have to pay is a watch far too thick that won't even fit comfortably under a dress shirt.
    The second issue is the price. Omega have made far too many versions of the Planet Ocean (more than 100 - I'm not kidding, look it up). Five size variants, multiple colors, materials and so on. It creates confusion in the consumer, and ultimately it seems to be affecting resale price (or if not that, something else is). You can buy these gray at more than 40% off MSRP, and it is not uncommon for them to lose more than half their value on the used market. More as time passes.
    You compare this to a Rolex Submariner? Buy one for $8000 new today, and it will easily sell for no less than $7500 several years from now. Buy a Planet Ocean new for full MSRP today, and by next week you'd have probably lost $3000-$4000. That's a pretty bitter pill to swallow.

    Simply beautiful. and Beautifully simple. I have the 8500 movement and 45.5mm version of this watch which I adore. The upgrades on this watch are indeed very impressive, but the choice to make this watch smaller is something I am not sure about just yet. I would like to upgrade, but I still prefer the heft of the 45.5mm. Maybe it is something I would get used to over time? Thoughts?

    I have this watch with a blue dial and have been wearing it nearly every day since 2021 when I bought it. I love it so much that I actually sold my Rolex Kermit Submariner because it is hands down a better watch in every way. It keeps better time, it looks modern, it wears better on the wrist, and the clasp is incredible. Rolex clasps are crap for the money they make you pay.
    I can see me wearing this Planet Ocean for the rest of my life.

    The numbers on the dial aren't etched in. It their liquid metal processes. They basically squeeze metal into empty cavities in the ceramic bezel.

    • @IhateYoutube
      @IhateYoutube 7 років тому

      chavo8891 the number and hash recesses are etched (burned) into the ceramic with an 8000 watt laser. Then a slug of LM is flattened over the ceramic and the excess is machined off.

    To me, the coaxial ruins the watch. such a silly thick piece. put a solid caseback on to reduce thickness, and go back to the 2892 based movement that they used in the past and keep it under 12mm.

    • @Nexus.Achiles
      @Nexus.Achiles 7 років тому

      Yankee Rider the 2892 based was also co-axial. Extra thickness is mainly due to unnecessary display caseback, this is not a dress watch, so who cares about a rotor full of red letters and numbers. Big mistake. Omega PO is s trying to be too many things these days. I prefer my 2500.

      Nexus Achilles I'm talking the original smp series with a basically straight 2892. That watch is slightly less WR, but like 4mm thinner. I agree though, a display back on a diver seems silly to me

    Twice I went to buy a Rolex because I had saved enough money (I’m not particularly rich I just like watches) and was going for a Rolex just because it’s a Rolex. I was going for either the Submariner or a GMT Master II which looked decent enough in pictures. The first time I found myself passing in front of the Omega store. I walked in out of curiosity. I was very impressed with the Seamaster. But I was planning on getting a Rolex so off I went to the Rolex store. I can’t begin to express the disappointment I felt after holding and trying on the Submariner and GMT Master II... They both felt extremely cheap and lacking “character”. It didn’t take me a long time to go back and buy the Omega.

    • @jimmyjay122
      @jimmyjay122 5 років тому +2

      Paul Geddes I see the point of comparing prices, but it wasn’t at all about the money. It was about how the watch made me feel. A Rolex is just too bland... GMT Master II, Submariner, Daytona, Yacht Master II... all look good in pictures and very disappointing in real life and lacking substance/character. I recently paid +26K for a steel watch (a 40th birthday gift to myself), could have gotten 2 Rolex watches for that and kept some change. But I just can’t pay money for a watch just for its name. It does nothing from me. I don’t feel any passion or artistic effort go into making a Rolex. It seems that they have gotten to where they are today through successful marketing and through building the image of the brand over the years.

    • @paulgeddes7384
      @paulgeddes7384 5 років тому +1

      @@jimmyjay122 wasn't comparing pricing per say. Overriding better quality watches are tangible once you've had your hands on. And THEN you reveal the price. That said, the explorer is unpretentious and undeniably a quality bit of kit.

    • @jimmyjay122
      @jimmyjay122 5 років тому +1

      Paul Geddes I honestly have only seen Explorers twice IRL with a couple of colleagues. I don’t know why I never considered it, maybe because for me it just never “stood out” so to speak. Also I will not deny that a Rolex has a substantial amount of quality to it no matter how “lazy” it’s designs may be. But I think the difference between our tastes is that I like a watch that stands out. One that has a noticeable presence if you will. Which may sometimes be flashy and thus seen as pretentious 😆 (mind you, the flashiest looking watch I have is a 43mm steel Breitling)
