RD145: I cleaned the Calcium Reactor & found the problem

  • My calcium reactor is over 19 years old and should really be named Old Faithful. It’s what I use to maintain the alkalinity and calcium levels in my reef, running 24 hours a day. It was desperately in need of a good deep cleaning, and that’s what I did. I completely disassembled it, including the pump itself. Once everything was clean and reassembled, I went ahead and filled it up with new Reborn media from Two Little Fishies, and the normal Alk level has been hit in less than 24 hours later.

    I've noticed my sump light makes my lines get algae and just stuff growing in all the calcium reactor lines etc.Its funny because my draw line had gotten clogged on me and for the life of me couldn't find the issue until I said wait let me inspect EVERYTHING. And found the issue did yhe same thing you did cleaned my calcium reactor and end every see through line in my sump great video.TY.

    The Versa pumps are well built. Easy to disassemble and service. Too bad Mobius has so many issues because Ecotech makes great hardware.

    The rubbing alcohol tip is a great trick for saving wet electronics. Denatured alcohol is best if you have, but either works. The alcohol will displace the moisture and then evaporate. Saved a few things this way before!

    Hi Marc. Nice to get your calcium reactor back on track. But MACNA is over, so it is time to contact Chris from ACI and start Kalkwasser 🙂

    How are you experiencing coral health with huge alkalinity swings? I’ve always thought and experienced extreme death in even the slightest swings

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  Рік тому +1

      A big swing would be 9 one day to 15 the next. My reef trickled down for several days from 8.8 to 7.8 and the reactor put it back to 8.75 the next day. That’s not a big swing at all.

      @@melevsreef wow! I changed from the black bucket, red sea coral reef pro salt because the high alkalinity would spike my tank alkalinity 1 or 2 or even 3 dkh, and I’d have immediately rtn on two of my acros, had to switch salt and I’ve always avoided large swings, good to know tho that isn’t the only experience

    • @Layheeee
      @Layheeee Рік тому

      @@melevsreef also my tank is 13.5 gallons so I wonder if that affects it aswell.

      @@Layheeee The rule for water changes: Match temperature, salinity and alkalinity (or pH) exactly. If you do that, you can change all the water you want. But if you change the water and it has a 3 dKH difference, SPS would be affected.
      But the tank itself can handle some variance over time. In the past (and it happened to me two years in a row), my reef's alkalinity was creeping up without me noticing because I wasn't testing like I should. When I did test, I was shocked to see the tank was at 22 dKH, which I tested three times as that seemed crazy. The pH controller had failed on my reactor (lost its setting after a power outage). The livestock was 100% unaffected, and the water looked clear. What I did was shut off the CO2 to the calcium reactor for about a week until the tank was 16 dKH, then turned it on again and left it there for a week or so. Then I turned it off again for several days, and let it drop to 12 dKH, and resumed the CaRx to lock that number in for a week or two. Then I shut it off again for a few days until the tank was 9 dKH, and then resumed. It took me about 2 months or so to bring it down without loss of corals / fish. The craziest thing was when it happened to me a year later, AGAIN due to a lack of testing. That's why I encourage everyone to test their water weekly, to avoid such stuff.
      But yes, corals can adapt to some crazy numbers and not die.

      @@Layheeee Smaller tanks don't handle big swings. But a 1g water change wouldn't kill off SPS even if the numbers were pretty off. If you can match the three measurements I mentioned, that would be ideal.
