I just recently got a tank for turtles and have been watching a bunch of your videos about tank maintenance. A bunch of them mention these different types of media in filters but don’t explain what they are or what they do (although this video did give some good info about chemical media). Maybe you have a video and I couldn’t find it but as a noob, a video going into detail about the 3 different types of media, and what each do in the filter would be fantastic. Great stuff so far though 👍🏻
Love me some ChemiPure. IMHO, best stuff out there. Unless you very carefully monitor Purigen, it eventually leaches into the tank and you’re left with white residue for eternity. Careful with carbon if you’re using it on your saltwater tank with your emperor angel. It’s a risk factor for head and lateral line erosion (HLLE) - something those fish are very prone to. In that tank, Purigen would be the safer route.
Very good stuff again! I will only add that activated carbon is not easy to use. First, most of them release large amounts of phosphorus into the water, with some types of aquarium it is killer. One Polish scientist tested dozens of aquarium activated carbons, he is on UA-cam, the conclusions are shocking as to the quality of this product, even well-known brands, I recommend it to those looking for more pro info on keeping this product in the aquarium. Purigen great product .. only its regeneration with bleach very laborious and time consuming to get rid of the bleach. Again, another Polish scientist shows on UA-cam another method of regeneration, completely safe and fast, again I recommend it. The last product that I missed here is a phosphorus remover, the basis in Targanyika and Malawi (to keep nice algae in the aquarium) Regards :)
Kev, I use purigen and ammonia remover in my 90 gal CA cichlid tank only. My other 2 tanks are planted my 55 gal and my 20 gal long I only use the tidal filters and the pads and biological filtration only. Because chemical filtration like carbon isn’t good for planted tanks. Because it takes the plant fertilizer when you dose the tank and it takes the stuff out of the water that the plants use to live and grow. Appreciate the video bro.
Bought a big pack of Seachem Safe but haven't used it more than once... I let the water sit in the drum to gas off the chlorine/chloramine with a pump running in the drum. Has worked for me but now I feel like I should start using Safe so that it's not a total waste of money. ✌️
Either way would work well. While the water sitting in a drum does gas off the chlorine, it doesnt remove other dissolved organics in the water. Safe does. And Prime will remove heavy metals from the water 😊
Enjoying your videos! You are great! Question - I have a new 400 liter tank with a large piece of wood (old and used in a tank before), but the water is greenish and has dust particles in making the water not crystal clear and with greenish yellowish tinge. What do you suggest for clear water? Using carbon? If so where in my filter do I place the bag of carbon? Look forward to heisting from you. thanks so much for all your tutorials!
I wouldn’t use any chemical media while cycling as it could remove/reduce dissolved organics which can indirectly reduce inorganic’s like ammonia and nitrite, slowing down your cycle.

Do any of these remove minerals live plants need, especially trace elements? I use Chemipure Green because it claims to not remove minerals that plants need.
That is an excellent question! Theoretically, yes carbon will absorb some of the minerals and nutrients plants need, but not all. In order to remove them all you would need to be using RO water. Using carbon wont produce same results as RO. But if you wanted to use Carbon for a few days, even up to a week, in order to remove meds, odors, or just to quickly clear up your tank, your plants will still be just fine 😊 (I wouldn't use it on a consistent basis though)
Hi. Can we use the carbon used for filtering drinking water? Amazon sells 24 bags of drinking filter carbon very cheap. Are they the same carbon that can be used for aquarium? Everything selling for aquarium are too expensive.

What do you feed your parrot? I picked up a large blood parent that nothing I put in the tank does it like
Which do I use for my FX6? Starting a new Aquarium?
Chemical media is optional. You dont need to use anyone. But if you really wanted to help get your water as clear as possible in the shortest amount of time, go with Seachem Purigen! 💪
@@KaveManAquatics okay purigen in all 3 trays?
@@KaveManAquatics So do Purigen, Matrix and chemi pure blue?
Can you use chemical media with a sponge filter ?
Not really. It needs water to pass through it to be effective.
Thanks Kev!!!
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
Got a question 29 gallon tank, how many tetra can I stock, and a 40-gallon tank? How many small cichlids can I stock
Have you ever used the aquavitro version of Purigen called purfiltrum which says it does 110 gallons per bag ?
I have not! But Aquavitro is Seachems sister company so I'm sure it works just as good if not better. 😊
@@KaveManAquatics yeah use that instead and I love it! My local fish store sells it so do that instead of the regular Seachem and it’s the same price but you get 10 more gallons per bag
@@andrewbent9204 lol blondness ok but I guess you know me 😂
@@andrewbent9204 aww we have a keyboard warrior sorry you never make any mistakes lol hiding behind a computer screen such a tough guy
Im trying to figure out whats best to run in my 2 gallon pico mixed reef. Its packed full of corals and uses a hob. Im thinking purigen
Hey Kevin my blood parrot cichlid is flashing but it’s definitely not ich. I was wondering if you might have a few ideas of what it might be and suggestions on how to fix it. I really dont want to do a mercy kill on him. He has a white pearly substance and his gills but only his gills and all the other fish are fine
I have to buy all of the above. Funny how fast I forget to pick up more and run out.
Links to everything in the description 😁
@@KaveManAquatics Thanks for the tip. This is so much easier than going to the store and hoping that they have what I need.
You have beautiful fish
Thank you! 😊💪
I have a 150. Tht i set up a month and a half ago. Cycled the tank. I have bad brown algae spots all over my 3 d background ( no where else in tank). I bought. Sea chem phos guard. But so far. (No results) 🤣. Hopefully it works. Or else im gonna have to take the backround out. And scrub the brown algae spots with a toothbrush. 👋
I am trying mix some peacocks and clown loach but I don’t know what substrate to use because I know aragonite sand will bring ph up. My tap water coming out at 8ph should I use normal sand or aragonite still ? Please help. Thank you
Hi there any reason as to why the Purigen pre made bag has made my aquarium cloudy I rinsed it out under tap water last night checked out today and it was more cloudy then it was without it
Possible it needed a bit more rinsing 😁
@ I’ve rinsed it out more and also added some polywool after it if it doesn’t sort my clarity what would you suggest ?
Does charcoal eat the fertilizer out of your water?
No it doesnt, If you mean carbon it absorbs dissolved organics and medications.
I have a hob filter and sponge filter running but I want a new Hob aquaclear if switch will I still have good bacteria on sponge filter to adjust to new Hob?
You'll have some on sponge filter yes, but most will be in the old HOB. I suggest using all the media from old HOB inside your new HOB and you'll be good to go 😊💪
Yay thanks! 😁
What if I can't fit my Purigen in front of the filter? There's no room.
I have it sitting in where the wAter comes into the filter.
How the heck do you get a Purigen bag (or any extra chemical filter) in a HOB Aqueon Quiet Flo?
If you've got a small filter that doesnt have enough space for media...upgrade your filter 😊
hi, are you saying you prefer seachem purigen over chemi pure blue? i used purigen and seachem seagel together, separate bags, same as chemi pure blue.. i've used CPB and went back to my seachem pure.. i just think is seachem pure is just a tad more Crystal Clear .. your thoughts?
I agree, I've switched to only using Seachem Purigen and get great results.
KAVEMUN🔥🔥🔥
😁
I put prime in my water, but the fish store said the PH still too high, i dont know what else to do
Prime does not lower your PH. Why do you want to lower it? What kind of fish are you keeping?
I highly suggest you check out my playlist for beginners. It'll be very helpful for you 😁 - ua-cam.com/play/PLP5OXTIIDO8NYvhUHAmwAd54WFmS4d8er.html
I've never used it so cant tell you for a fact, but yea, It should be the same carbon.
Hi thanks for sharing
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
Dude, I love the part where you got the chemical media out of the trash. Almost made me choke on my drink! 😂
🤣🤣 Glad you liked that...almost didnt make it into the final cut 🤣
Well, it was hilarious. There is great aquatics information all over UA-cam. I watch because of your personality, your humor, and the way you love your fish. Keep up the great work!
BOOM!!! get it son
Lets Gooo!!
Nice
What about matrix ?
Matrix is bio-media, not chemical media.
I put a video out on this today then so did Ben ochart, now kev 😂 damn it
Great minds 😊
Purigen is not chemical…it’s mechanical. It’s a resin that absorbs organic waste.
yes its a resin that absorbs organic waste. Thats exactly why its chemical media.
Been 20 years. Never used carbon ☝️ My goldfish r 20+ plus years old 🤷
I’m pretty sure I mentioned these are all optional and not necessary. 😁
honestly plants all the way i dont want my fishes to be filled with chemicals
If you only knew all the chemicals ALREADY in your source water.
Except u guys get thousands of views I got 11
Purigen is not chemical filtration.
Its chemical media 🙄
Carbon is not called charcoal lol just saying.
I misspoke sir, please forgive me 🙏
Hole in the head has happened to micks fish uk. So yeah stay away.
Purigen is the shiz and I recharge it and use it over and over . Just buy enough to cycle in while you recharge the used stuff. My overstocked tank of yellow labs is constantly at 10 or less nitrates without a sweat. My tank is so clear the fish look like they are floating in the air
Great video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
