    Straw phonation is one type of exercise from a group of SOVT exercises (which stands for semi occluded vocal tract exercises). They are very popular nowadays and many people think that SOVT voice therapy will save their voice and life. It is true that SOVT exercises benefits are well recognized, for example less vocal tension, decreased vocal strain. Vocal straw exercises are just one type of SOVT exercises speech therapy. But are these vocal exercises good for all vocal issues? They may be good vocal cord exercises but they are not magical! It is important to know the SOVT exercises purpose so that you set the right expectations. SOVT exercises voice and straw exercises for voice therapy are wonderful if you know when to use them and when to use other approaches.

    Great video. I first started using straw exercises…and took them too far, and really strained. They need to be used carefully and as a feedback tool for a singer. I use them to get going in my breathing warmup, but like you say, these are not magic.

    Wow, I stumble upon this video and yes, one day for the first time in my life I tried Straw Exercise and couple hours later I can saw the differences in my voice and my throat felt like it opened wide, my voice sound deep,strong and smooth. But the next day, it back to my old voice again and I tried it again for a week but the end result was nothing like the first one.

      That is the nature of the straw exercises. They can help reduce tension that already exists in the muscles but it will not prevent it. I suggest that you address the reason why you are experiencing tension and do exercises for that. But I am happy to hear that they are working for you.

      @@healthyvoicetips Hi Katarina, thanks for replying my comment!
      -I do straw exercise bcs I have nasally and high pitched voice. It cures lil bit of my nasally voice as the air now come out thru my mouth only. But my voice still not smooth and high pitched.
      - Back to the first time I tried straw exercise, in just few hours I can felt my throat wide open, my voice sound smoother and deep.
      -My next day, I drank Ice Tea and developed a stuffy nose, which resulted in phlegm for a couple of days. Despite trying straw exercise for weeks, I can't get the same first experience I had in my first attempt.

    I've been watching a lot of your videos recently! I've always had a very weak voice that is quite husky and gets tired easily. I often have to cough it to clear it if I speak for a while and some people have asked if I smoke when I've never smoked before. I'm not sure if I'm straining and I'm not sure whether to go to a specialist or stick at the exercises and see if there is improvement. I also want to change the pitch of my voice because it's lower than I want to it to be, but Im not sure if it will ruin my voice even more. Thanks for your videos!

      Voice can feel weird as you are going through puberty. It may be nothing bad, just new for you. If you are worried, speak to your parents or a doctor who can explain better what is going on.

    Nice channel. I find some of your relaxation tips interesting. I tried the laryngeal massage you talked about in a previous video and right afterwards I noticed my breathing improved by a lot. My breaths were fuller and deeper. Is that a common benefit reported with that exercise? Also, I remember seeing a voice coach and they recommended I use a similar straw exercise as described here. I never really found it to be helpful. Often, I found it tightened up my voice

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Рік тому +2

      It depends on how wide is your straw. If you find that it tightens your throat, try less resistance with wider straw. Or maybe straw exercises are not for you. Some people just don't like them.

      @@healthyvoicetips Ya, I think voice exercises in general aren't for me. I find it's best to just use my optimum pitch in a genuine setting kind of like famed speech pathologist Morton Cooper advocates. If it's a genuine, enthusiastic expression in my voice I think it more approximates the optimum pitch range and tone focus of my voice. I'm not exactly sure the science behind it, but his methods always made sense to me and the idea to be extremely "gentle" on your voice when trying to establish a more appropriate tone and pitch. I realize that may have been a bit of an off topic ramble, but I find that's the best way for me to approach "warming up" my voice for clarity and resonance. I think one day I'll reach my voice goals. The optimum pitch idea really fascinates me in particular. It makes me think of just how powerful and flexible the human voice instrument can be "tuned" to

    Why is it that during straw exercises (both straw and lax vox) my vocal chords are in pain and I have more phlegm on my vocal chords even throughout the exercises and right after them? I have had a vocal coach to learn using the straw and lax vox. I’ve been told I do everything properly yet it seems like it causes me even pain. Should I continue to do the exercises? Will I see a change or should I stop them if I will pain during doing them?

  • @jonathangoodman2636

    The most famous proponent of straws, Ingo Titze, says that there IS long-term and permanent benefit, but you are suggesting straw work "doesn't last very long" (your words). Do we have a definitive answer to the "reset" vs "rehab" difference? I suspect much of the preaching online still has little rigorous scientific evidence to back up positive OR negative claims.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  5 місяців тому +1

      Interesting question. I guess it depends on how you define "long-term" and what specific "benefit" you are measuring. I am not aware of any scientific studies that would go beyond 3 months and look at the long-term benefits of straw exercises. However, if there are no scientific studies, it does not mean that it is not possible. I would argue that it depends on what kind of voice issue you are dealing with. And of course, you never do one thing in a vacuum. Science is not black and white. From experience of my clients, the benefits they are perceiving right after doing the straw exercises are gone later (for some, it's 5 minutes, for others it's hours). We are all different.

    Hello Katarina. I wanted to ask you a question.
    I soften my voice when I’m talking (I’m female and I like sweet, soft voice). But I always have a feeling that I want to clear my throat. How can I get rid of this feeling? I found out that I can sip water or swallow twice etc., but I need a more permanent solution. Because I want to keep sounding more feminine and soft, but without this feeling. Thank you

    • @louiserothman6566

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Рік тому

      The need to clear your throat after you "change" your voice is telling you that whatever you are doing is not sustainable. But it is possible to find a more sustainable way of sounding soft and feminine. Speak to a voice therapist who can help you figure out how to do it safely and sustainably.
