Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

Comment section is in death bed, and breathing through copium.
They told the audience that "If you don't like it, go touch grass"
    The actual audience touches grass.
    And now they're suprised.
At least this time they blamed the weather and not the audience.

    • @antduude

Give it a day or so, they'll be screaming "Racists, bigots, phobes" within a day or so. Davies, Gatwa, and Co. did everything they could to alienate the classic Doctor Who audiences well in advance of the show's premiere. And their mantra of "Don't like it, don't watch it, touch grass, etc." was met with most long-time fans saying "Your terms are acceptable."
And yet, when the audiences don't show up, the show's creators will ask "Why didn't they watch??" And the answer will be "Because you told us to shove off." Remember this as the show's ratings plummet over the season.
Can't say what the long term ratings will be in England, but in the States, Disney+ ratings will take at least a week to sort themselves out since no streaming service, including Disney, releases their official viewing numbers, they have to come from Nielson, Samba, and other ratings services. But the numbers will come out. And Disney's subsidizing the show's final two seasons isn't going to turn things around. This _will_ be the end.

The people who fund the programme (not the creators or showrunners) WILL be looking at the overnights. They will compare those numbers against numbers from outputs in similar timeslots of day/week/month and they will be considering if the numbers represent a good return on their investment. And when alternatives such as much cheaper gameshows or programmes about antiques get higher figures, the funding people will not exactly be cheering.
Sadly, the episodic nature means that there is not enough story arc material to keep views invested with looming threats or mysterious resolutions drawn out over a long time. There is not really a lot of mystery with these two, and song and dance numbers don't really deliver it.

    • @mrdr0161

And as for Mystery punch to keep you hooked, the main characters have the length and breadth of the universe with each of its minor and major tribulations through the entirety of time as its disposal, but you think simply finding out slightly more about characters we already met or yet to meet is what viewers are going to passionately invest in as each episode drops? I've watched Doctor Who since the 80's, though I still haven't seen most of the original Who yet. Many years ago, started watching from the beginning, though ended up moving on to other things as it got tiring having to do research on the missing episodes to try and keep the story straight. So lucky for me, is there is still a ton of original Doctor Who left for me to watch since new Who has been crap for many years now.
I think the only real good Who was in the Tennant years, though quality dropped towards the end.

Then of course there's a lot of people these days who wait until a season has completely dropped, and then they binge watch it. Those figures will also count down the line. The argument that linear overnight viewing figures are down because people watched early on the IPlayer, doesn't take in to account that casual viewers that watched the IPlayer early would probably be the same casual viewers that watch the IPlayer normally after linear transmission. They are only going to watch it once, so it doesn't really matter when, the plus 7 day figures will be similar. Obviously hard core fans will watch at the first possible opportunity, but people who go out will watch when they get back from the pub, or on Sunday afternoon. The BBC caught the Friday night crowd, rather than the Saturday night crowd. It is older viewers, who have always watched BBC1/ITV in a linear fashion, who probably watched it while they were eating their dinner, waiting from something else to come on like Eurovision. Maybe Doctor Who has changed too much from the one they remember watching in the past and they switched over to ITV. The BBC is keen to focus more on the younger generation now. They need to persuade more youth to watch to compensate for the long term Doctor Who older viewers who are losing interest and channel switching.

This time, I watched Space Babies on iPlayer at about 1am on Saturday morning, as I'd been our taking pictures of the Northern Lights! I've just watched the Devil's Chord, on my phone, in the garden (7.00pm on Sunday evening). Neither of these viewings will have contributed towards the overnight figures. How many other people watched in a similar way, or a completely different way? Technology now means we don't have to watch there and then. And that's why so many people now catch up, at their convenience. Final figures taking all viewing streams are the ones to take notice of now

To everyone who is saying Ncuti Gatwa told fans to leave, lets do some fact checking. Lets examine a few quotes in full. All when asked about the haters Ncuti has said "I feel like anyone that has a problem with someone who’s not a straight white man playing this character, you’re not really, truly a fan of the show. You’ve not been watching! Because the show is about regeneration, and the Doctor is an alien - why would they only choose to be this sort of person?" And responded with "Don’t watch. Turn off the TV. Go and touch grass, please, for God’s sake.” and also said "What are you going to do, tell the same stories? Have the same people fronting things for all of eternity? Representation and inclusivity and branching out… It enriches us all. How embarrassing. You people with your tiny mindsets - open a book, look out the window and then f*ck off.” He was addressing the haters, not fans. Ncuti also did a video for the Offical UA-cam channel saying how he appreaciated the fans. So yeah, Ncuti hasnt told fans to not watch, but if you felt like he was referring to you, the perhaps you need to look at yourself.

The overnight ratings were a lot lower than I thought they would be. I know a lot of people have made excuses for this like it being released on iPlayer at midnight Friday and the weather being nice and while I think that has factored into it I still think the ratings are so low it is a cause for concern. I guess we will know more when the consolidated ratings are released during the week. I just think overall interest in the show is on the wane.
I think what has happened is that many casual viewers gave up during the Chibnall era because they overall quality dropped and Whittaker didn't really resonate with many viewers. The return of David Tennent brought back some interest but it hasn't been a return to form for Russel T Davies thus far. While the show often has some sort of social messaging in the past its never been as overt as it has been over the last few episodes.
The low point for me is in a life threatening alien invasion a trans character lectures the Doctor about the correct use of pronouns and then goes on to insult him by saying a "its something a male presenting timelord wouldn't understand". I just find that kind of social messaging to be extremely crass. There is an obvious LBGTQ agenda going on in RTD's return which goes far beyond anything he did in his original run. Its almost like he wants to use the show as a vehicle to lecture at the audience. You have to remember this is a family show and a lot of families have socially conservative parents who wont want their children watching it now.

The 18 hour thing doesn't mean anything. The online viewers aren't guaranteed to not be a repeat viewers on normal tv. Fanatics gonna fanatic. So you can't just put those numbers together and call it a day. And a first season episode showing that weak of a start is apocalyptic. Those numbers are never going to be any better for the season. When you have a break like this, the first episode back is the high watermark. And this is a very low mark to hit. Something else you should probably stop making guesses as to how things are going to run. You guys are usually not correct with your numbers, nor your guesses about what's going ot happen. Also , Doctor Who has already failed. The BBC cancelled it until Disney offered to bail it out as long as they could control it. That's a fail. They had to sell it off for it to survive. And no show survives telling it's fanbase to pound sand.

Space Babies was pretty bad, in a similar way to Arachnids in the UK, there are good things there, but overall, just doesn't work. The Devil's Chord felt like The Giggle Part 2. Overall, I think I liked it, but that Twist song at the end didn't work, for me at least. If it had been part of the episode proper or the resolution of the story, I think it could have worked better. But, after the Maestro has been defeated to have this big musical number doesn't really work, just takes me right out of the episode and makes it too silly.

I watched both episodes on iplayer as soon as they were released. I also watched them again when broadcast on BBC1. I enjoyed both episodes, but think The Devil's Chord was a stronger episode than Space Babies. I'm not one or those "fans" who complain about every single aspect of the program. If it entertains me, then that's all I want. I wander how the people that always spout negativity get through their lives living so miserably.

@@fletcherhamilton3177 Yes, low viewing figures which only count for 1/3 of all viewing figures. Its clear that people have watched it through streaming, which offers way more pros than normal TV. Like UHD, pausing, catch up, binging, downloading, watching at a later date. The media landscape has changed, and normal TV viewing figures are becoming less relevant, as there are now more ways to watch.

Tharries, you seem to be a very positive, gentlemanly and sincere person and obviously a very loyal fan of DW. From your posts and DW merchandise in your room it is obvious you fradom goes back a long time. My fandom did too but these two eoisodes imo are dreadful and I can't even pretend to off faux prasie for anything. I am happy to move on. I do ot want to watch this trash anymore including agends regradless of what they might be. Singing dance routines, the glibt of the wink -this is Disney or Marvel. It is not DW. In fact one commentatpr who loved the episode said it reminded him of when Marvel began putting out movis long ago. But I do hold concerncs for those who have invested heavily both emotionally, and financially in this show. I don't want to see such loyal fans lose what they once love for all life.
I didn't watch either epsiode only links on UA-cam and that certainly was enough for me to get the picture. They make The Twin Dilema look good. Often I get annoyed with grandiose statements by haters but for once I agree with them DW is dead. If it carries on as a new entity please can they change the name of the show as it pains viewers who have been around for more than fifty years.
To my two favourite reboot Doctors Smith and Capaldi please don't come back and tarnish your fantatstic Doctors' with this garbage. Your reputation is far more important than the dollars or fame. In fact, with Tennant one could argue his Doctor (10 or 14 or 14044) has had his Doctor's liking massively collapse in on him.
What we got was a show RTD and Chibanll and Gatwa and the BBC/Disney box tickers wanted. Shame I remember when the fans mattered and were even loved for their appreciation and loyalty. These days the bigwigs couldn't give fandom or even regular viewers the light of day. Disgraceful.

I have to say, I strongly suspect that viewing figures will drop further if they keep doing musical numbers.
I liked TDC a lot until that point. I really, really hope RTD isn't actually going a bit mad like it can sometimes seem he is, and that he knows that actually, whilst I imagine it's quite fun of you like that kind of thing, it absolutely is not what people watch DW for, and whilst I do want to stress that doing new and unexpected things is GOOD and I want the show to keep trying stuff, there are definitely some ways in which it needs to give audiences what they expect and want, and I am yet to speak to ANYONE who actually liked the musical number (even my wife, who does like musicals, hated the addition of the musical number at the end of TDC).

This is why they put episode 1 and 2 (never ever done before) on iPlayer. They knew their ratings were over for this show which is in part due to the dying BBC. I have to say respectfully this is not the show I once knew and once thoroughly enjoyed. Now if you like the show as is good for you and all who enjoy it. The show as it is now is definitely not for me. I’ve given it chance after chance and it’s simply no longer something I enjoy. I also feel it’s worth mentioning that no matter who you are everyone is entitled to their own taste and opinions and should never feel threatened or be accused simply because two opinions don’t line up. Still love listening to the theme tune which is timeless stuff and the episodes I grew up with and enjoyed I am very grateful for. I wish everyone still aboard the Tardis new and old the best of luck. But this is unequivocally where I get off.
Wishing you the very best of luck.
