ACC could let the restaurants stay as tenants. Students will want to buy lunch.

Remember the old jingle on the radio in the 1970’s, you said it all at Highland Mall.

The real reason why Highland Mall went downhill wasn't because in store shopping is a thing of the past, but rather, because of the economically disadvantaged community it sits on. When it was built in 1971, it was about the only mall Austin had and the area it was built on was a frugal community. However, in the early to mid 80's the area suffered economically and thus, it became home for the economically disadvantaged. And the problem only got worse as the years progressed. You see this same pattern in the public schools in the area, such as Regan High, Lanier High, LBJ High and Johnston (now Eastside Memorial). When these schools first opened, they were very successful educational institutions as they sat on a successful and wealthy community. But as the years passed and the community went downhill so did the schools and this mall. Now the schools are just as empty and scary as Highland Mall.
