I loved shopping at the mall- however the stores have done a poor job of keeping up inventory and most everything at the Sunrise mall is cheaply made and mark-down store quality

Yeah I don't remember when the Walmart was there per sey but I remember visiting the mall after or even around 2015. God, I can't believe how long it's been since then, the mall was starting to become what you would to refer to as a ghost mall. Considering that for the most part being from Brooklyn my usual Mall destinations with friends and family were Roosevelt Field and the Staten Island Mall, occasionally Green Acres in Valley Stream. I noticed the Sunrise, now Westfield Mall seemed unusually desolate but had a charm to it and even though many major retailers by then we're pulling out it was nice to be able to shop in a place with very little foot traffic. But of course while walking through the mall I remember saying each time, especially at the beginning of the e-commerce domination, reign of Amazon, how do they stay in business? I remember the last time I visited I didn't notice how old the mall's design was. But that was years ago and since dramatic updating changes have been made to some of the other malls I've mentioned the Westfield's design does appear from customer stills and videos very dated. But still kind of charming, sorry to see it go. Especially considering it will most likely be replaced by I can almost guarantee pricey residential property.

This mall has been slowly decaying since the days when it was a Simon property. One of the reasons this mall may well be closing is it had a crime problem and issues from the surrounding area. The marketing mix was not good for the past 10 years. Once management added stores the quality of Kamart to the mix it drew the wrong types of buyers who did not want the stores the mall should house. This is now the ideal area for another housing development to add more revenue to the budgets of the towns and just put more pressure on the local infrastructure. Malls to me had a very impersonal feel to them, poor customer service in general, people who work there in general didn't know the products and didn't seem to take an interest either. So the internet, more savvy buyers and online shopping, influx of chinese made goods, etc. created options. The pandemic didn't help matters and I'm sure rents for tenants were ridiculous so prices had to be higher. Things certainly change

Yes online shopping has something to do with malls dying all over the U S, but it's not the main reason! The main reason is that the general American public just has less & less money to freely spent
You can’t completely blame Amazon and online shopping for a lot of these stores going under and leaving. A lot of these retail stores were in and out of bankruptcy and were bought by creditors trying to milk the company for a little more money way before Amazon was a thing. Some filed bankruptcy because of bad decisions they’ve made and it caught up to them. Then some of these teetering in bankruptcy chains were one economic disaster away from closing store locations. Some barely recovered from the 2008 financial crisis and when the pandemic hit a decade later, it tanked them and they closed locations. When malls were losing these businesses, they failed.
I get a kick out of this building affordable housing. If you don't have commercial businesses. you will drive residents out with outrageous taxes. They are already insane on the Island.
Like the little girl said - "to touch it, and look at things..." There are still many people who would rather shop in an actual store, rather than buying online.
I really hope they revamp it and make it much bigger they is so much parking space for no reason not even 2/8 of the parking space is full and I’ve been there and it’s always been dead for years especially now. Nothing is ever sold out in any store in there but the memories there will always be apart of me. I hope they save it and make it into a new mall because it’s always fun shopping. Anyways for the ppl saying the pandemic killed this mall it’s already been dead for years, Personally I couldn’t experience this mall way back then but from my perspective I never have not seen atleast 5 stores not open and barricaded.
sad to say but literally that’s what happened everytime I go there with my friends that’s all we do with no notice of it really only fun thing that went on
Just turn the land to good use by rezoning it to be both commercial and residential in one area, like every city in the world instead of it being ugly parking lots.

@1:05 . That is the EXACT problem with malls . Destruction , shoplifting , fIights , robberies , carjackings . C
I bought a measuring tape years ago and I haven’t bought clothes in a mall since. Online just has more options and cheaper.
They will probably re-zone the property and build expensive apartments.
Bwahhhh!!! I use to go to that mall to pick up those cute L.I girls.
Use to talk my mother in driving down there from Queens.
Fun times would love to go back to 97-98.
Does anyone remember John's Bargain Store?
Across from the lumberyard"what's a lumberyard? "people say. South Ozone Park Queens NY. 1958. I was 7 years old and I remember. Loved John's bargain store. They were happy days. Simple and safe.
@@9089-i8i The John's bargain store I went to was in Corona Queens, there is also a lumber yard in Corona that is still in business. Corona sure has changed... one good thing is you can still go to the Lemon Ice King.
John, I remember those days like it was yesterday. John's bargain store was a treat for me after my father left the lumberyard. I remember so much about those days. Happy and whoesome. Thanks for the memories.
Sorry for the spelling. An English major, not that it's doing me any good now!
Yes online shopping has something to do with malls dying all over the U S, but it's not the main reason! The main reason is that the general American public just has less & less money to freely spent
I wonder what they did with the cube and the fish at Sunrise.
Respect, that means we drive over to woodberry commons/garden state/willowbrook/jersey gardens
It's ashame but many stores are gone. I guess they can turn it into a Homeless shelter and treatment center or affordable housing.
Welp, i guess a mall cant survive on sbarro pizza and city source 🤷♂️
Like the little girl said -
"to touch it, and look at things..."
There are still many people who would rather shop in an actual store, rather than buying online.
Yep. This is a big part of the shopping experience. But most people don't have the time to shop or really just are lazy to go.
They should turn that into a football stadium for the Jets or Giants
I liked going to get Cina Buns and Mrs Fields cookies.
You know what killed that mall people come to hang out and don't buy nothing and run up down like mooks.
sad to say but literally that’s what happened everytime I go there with my friends that’s all we do with no notice of it really only fun thing that went on
I remember the Korvettes and then A & S that was in Sunrise Mall across from JC Penney years ago...The 70's.
I still remember when I saw Busta Rhymes with his son at Sunrise Mall in like 2002 or so. He was like, “yeah! Busta Rhymes at the mall!”
Politicians close down the mall to put more money in their pockets. 🇱🇷
Just turn the land to good use by rezoning it to be both commercial and residential in one area, like every city in the world instead of it being ugly parking lots.
Thank Amazon 😡
It is Amazon I agree
